Dear prospective Master’s student,

Life is all about making choices, and the choice you are about to make will influence your future. So how do you know that a Master’s at Delft University of Technology is the right choice? Precisely because of that future. Our research at TU Delft is aimed at finding solutions for the problems facing the world today and tomorrow. We believe that the issues confronting society revolve around health, energy, environment and infrastructure & mobility, so those are the areas we pay extra attention to in our research and other activities. As an MSc student you will be very much part of our scientific community. Therefore, at TU Delft you can help us improve the future.

What we offer you is the chance to study in a challenging environment, with outstanding research facilities and excellent education: the ideal surroundings for you to excel in. An international environment also, in which scientists and students from all over the world work together on research and design projects. We value this international community; that is why all our MSc programmes are exclusively taught in English.

Naturally, we expect something in return: your dedication and commitment to your studies. Our MSc programmes offer you not only a comprehensive theoretical base in your chosen subject, but also a chance to specialise through elective subjects and a specific thesis topic. Should you wish to broaden your horizon, there are many student initiatives you can join, ranging from debating clubs to rocket builders.

Our graduates should be engineers capable of critical thinking and independent problem solving. And maybe your MSc will inspire you to embark on a third-cycle education. A PhD can be a stepping stone towards a scientific career. However, in today’s increasingly complex society the demand for highly educated people is also increasing in many other careers.

But let’s not forget there will be time for relaxation too. The TU Delft campus with its own sports centre and culture centre is the right place for that. And just beyond the campus is the centre of Delft: a beautiful city with an interesting history and, just as importantly, a vibrant cultural and night life. As I live right in the town centre, surrounded by student accommodation, I can guarantee you that student life in Delft is bustling.

In short, scientifically, culturally or socially, Delft will not disappoint you. I hope to welcome you here as an MSc student in the coming years.

1. Why TU Delft

A modern university with a rich traditionIn Greek mythology, Prometheus, whose torch forms the TU Delft logo, was a titan who defied Zeus, the supreme god, to steal fire from Olympus and give it to mankind. It was the mythological act that marked the beginning of man’s technological development. In the spirit of Prometheus, TU Delft is an entrepreneurial university at the forefront of technological development. It is constantly challenged to further technological advancement in the interests of society. By means of its fundamental and applied research and educational programmes and its focus on valorisation, TU Delft trains the engineers of tomorrow. Established on 8th January 1842 by King Willem II, TU Delft has a rich tradition spanning over one and a half centuries. While initially focusing on civil engineering the university has gradually added more and more engineering disciplines to the academic programme. Today TU Delft has eight faculties and currently offers fourteen undergraduate and some 40 postgraduate programmes. With approximately 16,000 students and an academic staff of 2,700 (including over 200 professors), TU Delft is the largest and most comprehensive university of engineering sciences in the Netherlands and among the largest and most renowned in the world.

Excellent research and education standardsTU Delft is a state university which conducts cutting-edge research and provides first-class education. To ensure that standards remain consistently high within Dutch universities as a whole, the Dutch government applies a visitation system. All the country’s universities and all university education programmes must comply with this. Alongside this national accreditation system, many of TU Delft’s education programmes are recognised as substantially equivalent to the best programmes in the USA by the American Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET) with very high marks for curriculum and research. In addition, the programmes are also accredited

The central TU Delft Library is a hub of technical and scientific information in the Netherlands. It is also a magnificent piece of architecture.

Energy, Health, Environment and Infrastructures & MobilityPatient-centred health care, plentiful supplies of affordable green energy, a clean and safe living environment, smooth commutes with no tailbacks, efficient public transportation systems – just a few of the most prominent social policy concerns today. Indeed, health, energy, the environment, and infrastructure and mobility are among today’s major social issues. To provide

and maintain prosperity and welfare, and to expand economic opportunities, it is essential to come up with appropriate solutions in these areas. That is why TU Delft devotes special attention to research and education relating to these four themes, while simultaneously engaging in research and offering educational programmes across a broad spectrum of other topics. The Delft Research Initiatives on Energy, Health, the Environment and Infrastructure & Mobility proactively initiate partnerships with companies, consortia and government agencies in order to

facilitate accelerated development of real-life solutions. Behind each Delft Research Initiative, there is a vibrant community of researchers, students, alumni and external parties who are engaged in academic debate and work together in concrete projects. Current projects include developing more affordable and more efficient solar cells, providing reliable data on climate change, designing a zero-emissions aircraft and developing state of the art technologies for the operating theatre.

TU Delft closely interlinks research and education, having each build solidly on the other. Research is ongoing in the faculties, research institutes and research schools. TU Delft's annual output is about 230 PhD dissertations and some 6,500 publications in numerous scientific journals. Most MSc programmes are research driven and thus challenge the student to dig deep to optimise their individual contributions. This work leads to excellent ties with industry and the creation of numerous technology-based (and often ex-student owned) companies in close proximity to the university.

Outstanding facilitiesThe provision of high quality research and education calls for outstanding facilities.The TU Delft University Library has one of the largest collections of technical and scientific materials in the Netherlands. Much of the collection is in the form of hard copies, but increasingly, e-journals, e-books and online reference materials are being added. In addition to collecting information, the TU Delft library helps students to find information. During office hours, employees of “Ask Your Library” are always available to help via chat, e-mail and phone, as well as in person. There is also the TUlib ‘help with information’ (hulp-bij-informatie) search site, which provides tips and pointers. The digital starting point for these and other library services, such as the catalogue, is www.library.tudelft.nl. In the main library building, you have access to many places to study, to work together with fellow students, to use computers, and also to have a coffee and read a newspaper. Briefly put: the TU Delft Library is the place to go at TU Delft – for information or just to relax! TU Delft has eight multidisciplinary research schools and a number of research institutes, all of which are fully equipped and dedicated to innovative research. The Delft Institute of Microelectronics and Submicron Technology (DIMES), for example, integrates the disciplines of nanoscale and high-speed device physics, materials science and process technology, and circuit design and embedded system design. At the DIMES laboratories there is a fully equipped clean room where students can design and even produce chips. The Kavli Institute of Nanoscience pursues cutting edge research at the forefront of many fields within its discipline.

TU Delft OpenCourseWareTU Delft develops technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. The university’s core tasks include delivering know-how and building knowledge networks in an international context. TU Delft OpenCourseWare is a free and open digital publication of high quality educational materials, organised as courses. www.ocw.tudelft.nl

Other examples of cutting-edge scientific facilities are the unique flight simulator, SIMONA, and the wind tunnels at the faculty of Aerospace Engineering not to mention the second-largest High Voltage Laboratory in Europe housed within the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. It is fairly unique for students to have the opportunity to work with such sophisticated facilities and it is one of the reasons why TU Delft graduates have such a good reputation.

The fostering of creative and independent thinkingTU Delft places strong emphasis on encouraging and stimulating students to become creative and independent thinkers so that they will later become engineers capable of independently solving complex problems. In order to foster this attitude, much of the academic curriculum revolves around analysis and project-group problem solving activities which are linked to report and paper writing activities. Learning by repetition is not something that is encouraged. As an MSc student you are expected to be able to make your own decisions. You should know how to work independently and manage your time so that assignments and course-work can be completed on time. The required study related material is clearly defined in the study guides, reading lists and syllabi. It is the task of the lecturer to assemble and structure the material whilst the student learns how to filter, absorb and apply that information. The role of the lecturer is therefore more that of assisting, inspiring and guiding rather than that of merely dictating a series of lectures. At TU Delft much importance is placed upon the opinions of individual students. It is not enough to just reproduce what others have written. Lecturers will often want you to give your opinions on subjects. You are encouraged to actively work together with your fellow students and lecturers for the duration of the programme. Student-staff relations at TU Delft tend to be relaxed and quite informal.

International environment This is very important in TU Delft’s thinking and approach, and international students naturally play a central role. Some fifteen percent of TU Delft’s students come from abroad, and represent a community of 100 nationalities; one reason why all MSc programmes are taught in English. TU Delft’s international reputation is excellent. We have partnerships with more than thirty leading universities all over the world and participate in numerous international exchange programmes, thus allowing our students to study abroad and foreign students to study in Delft. The ATHENS programme, for example, enables TU Delft students to follow a one week course at any one of nine partner universities in Europe.

An attractive historic university cityDelft is an interesting and historic town located in the province of South Holland between the larger cities of The Hague and Rotterdam, the former being the seat of Dutch government and the latter, with its Europoort, the largest sea terminal in the world. Delft is nicknamed ‘de Prinsenstad’ (the Princes’ City), because William of Orange, the first in the Dutch royal line, held court in Delft in the 16th century. Other famous historical figures who once lived and worked in Delft are the painter Johannes Vermeer and the inventor of the microscope, Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek. If one looks at the ancient canals lined with merchant’s houses, the old churches and the splendid town hall one sees that Delft’s rich history is still very much alive. At the same time, though, it remains a very modern, safe and vibrant city. Ten percent of its 100,000 inhabitants are students and the university has attracted a large number of technology-oriented companies. Website www.delft.nl

Student Initiative

In May 2009 the very first Plakkies hit the stores. Plakkies is the Afrikaans word for slippers. Plakkies are the trendy design flip-flops, designed by celebrity shoe designer Jan Jansen and Industrial Design student Michel Boerrigter. They are manufactured in a recently founded factory nearby the Durban townships in South-Africa, and have soles made from worn-out car tires. Production has given employment to 70 people. The proceeds are being ploughed back into the slum areas and used for projects including some for children. The project began with an initiative from Arnoud, student of Aerospace Engineering, who noticed that development aid inevitably starts with employment. He was inspired by the strategy taken by the KidsRights Foundation, which established a factory for children’s soft toys in

South-Africa. Arnoud went in search of a more Delft-like product, and came up with the flip-flops via Michel’s (Industrial Design Engineering) final Bachelor’s project. Together they built up an overwhelming list of sponsors and within a year, had progressed from concept to unique market launch. Plakkies are now for sale in many retail stores.

Sport Centre and Culture CentreIt is not difficult to stay in shape at TU Delft. Badminton, basketball, (Thai) boxing, fitness training, golf, rowing, hockey, indoor soccer, rugby, volleyball and table tennis are just some of the sports that can be taken up at the sport centre which is also ‘home’ to over 40 student sport teams. You can take up solo sports or participate in team sports with friends. Professional instructors are on hand to provide guidance and assistance. The sport centre is situated on the TU Delft campus. The annual membership fee is approximately €90 but additional fees may be charged for certain sports.

Are you interested in photography, acting, or playing the piano? Would you like to learn Capoeira, a combination of dance and martial arts originated by Brazilian slaves? Or perhaps painting is more your style? How about joining a band that rehearses weekly? These are just a few of the many activities on offer at TU Delft’s culture centre. Musical instruments are available, as well as a recording studio, an art studio, a rehearsal studio, a darkroom and a dance studio. You get access to these facilities by purchasing a card for the facility you wish to use. On average these cost €65.

LeisureIn Delft you will find a great many of things that will help you to enjoy student life. The city has numerous cafés and pubs, two cinemas and a theatre. There is also an abundance of reasonably priced restaurants. The ‘Delft international cuisine’ ranges from Chinese, Indonesian and Mexican to Lebanese food. Many student societies have their own restaurants which serve decent and healthy meals for price in the range of just € 4.00. Of course you can also cook your own food. Every Thursday and Saturday there is a market in the central market square, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and flowers. What else is there to do or see? The city park ‘Delftse Hout’ is the place to go for a stroll, to play soccer, to have a barbecue or to dive into the cool water on a warm summer day. If you prefer the sea then Scheveningen beach is only half an hour away by bus or tram.

Delft also has a number of interesting museums such as ‘Nusantara’, which is devoted to Indonesian ethnology and art and the ‘Prinsenhof’, former residence of the first Dutch monarch, William of Orange. Of course there is also the famous ‘Delft blue’ pottery, still produced today in the same way that it was manufactured hundreds of years ago. This ceramics factory ‘Porceleyne Fles’ is open to the public and offers guided tours for those who are interested and the opportunity to purchase products in the factory shop.

“After my Bachelor studies I knew I wanted to focus on the commercial side of product development. So I entered for Strategic Product Design. This programme relates design to putting the products on the market, creating

marketing plans for real product launches. It answers the question ‘how do you make a certain product successful?’ What I like about the programme is that it makes me a critical consumer. When I watch commercials or walk in the supermarket I look at products differently. I notice the smart or stupid ways they are branded, priced or promoted. My favourite courses are the real SPD types, on branding and marketing and such, though some research-focused courses are tough. My internship will let me experience working in SPD in different cultural contexts. When I graduate I would like to work as a strategic consultant or as product manager in a multinational. I would still like to work with products, but less with the design and more with everything around the commercial process.”

Student societiesEach MSc programme at TU Delft has its own student society, each of which protects the interests of its particular students. The various student societies also have representatives who sit on the faculties’ departmental committees and participate in discussions on teaching issues. It is their task to critically appraise teaching, detect problems and propose solutions.

The student societies also organise many study related events, such as conferences and excursions in the Netherlands and abroad. Naturally, they also organise parties and other leisure time activities as well. Once or twice a year, the student societies organize ‘Career days’ where various companies are invited to present themselves and students have the opportunity to talk with industrialists about career openings and opportunities.

“When I was 16 I started flying gliders and it became a passion. After high school I came to Delft and did Aerospace Engineering. What I

like here is that you not only follow courses and classes, it’s much more than that! There are associations, projects, sports clubs, and cultural events… In my second year I joined the formula student racing team, where we learned how to design and build a racing car. So I put the things I learned into practice. In my third year I helped first year students with their projects and organized a study tour to China and Russia. In my fourth year, I helped manage our study society. Currently I’m following the ‘design, integration and operations of aircraft and rotorcraft’ MSc track at the faculty of aerospace engineering. Initially this involves various specialist courses. In the second year I’ll be doing an internship at a company leading to my graduation project.”

TU Delft currently offers some 40 MSc programmes. The first year of most programmes comprises theoretical study, assignments and laboratory work. The second year is largely devoted to final thesis work and will involve participating in one of the university’s advanced research or design projects or completing an internship or research assignment within a company. Each academic year consists of two semesters. The first semester continues from September until the end of January, while the second semester lasts from the end of January until July.

TU Delft has adopted the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Students are expected to obtain 60 European credits (EC) each academic year. The duration of all MSc programmes is two years. In most MSc programmes students are given the opportunity to specialise in sustainable development.

During your studies, guidance and assistance is provided at all times. A faculty counsellor monitors progress and provides advice whenever appropriate. Please feel free to contact your counsellor whenever you come up against problems of any sort related to your study.

Honours Tracks

Motivated students who have performed well during the first semester of the Master’s programme (no fails and an average mark of 7.5 or higher) are eligible to participate in an Honours track. This is a special individual programme, scheduled alongside of the normal MSc programme which carries about 30 EC and must be related either to the student in question’s master’s degree course and/or to the role of technology in society. Such tracks can offer opportunities for more in-depth study, for example to prepare individuals for subsequent PhD programmes, or they might just provide students with a broader view on matters, as for example in the field of sustainability or other specific area of science. This extra programme has to be completed within the time allowed for the normal MSc programme. Students who successfully complete an honours track subsequently receive a special certificate from the university.

Everything here at TU Delft is so advanced and the facilities are very helpful for students when studying. Every class has good audio-visual equipment and computers in the superb library have all the software you need. There are plenty of places to study and a wireless internet signal is available everywhere inside the buildings so you can connect wherever you are.

My life is comfortable and happy. I enjoy TU Delft’s sports centre and cultural centre. They are great places to meet people. Basketball and football matches are now regular traditions of our Master class. After an unforgettable introduction week the members of our class became good friends. We feel we are not just a group studying the same programme but loyal colleagues, fifteen nationalities, who care for and respect others. My best memory? The atmosphere. Best lesson? How to organise myself.”

The aim of the MSc Programme in Applied Earth Sciences is to give a new generation of engineers the skills and knowledge to sustainably and responsibly locate, extract and process the Earth’s resources. In the programme, students learn how to approach complicated issues related to the challenges of energy production, raw materials technology and geotechnical engineering in an imaginative and resourceful manner. Students have numerous opportunities to work intensively with TU Delft’s partners in industry to complement their academic coursework with practical experience. MSc Programme in Applied Physics

Physics covers phenomena ranging from the infinitesimally small – subatomic particles – to the unimaginably large – the universe. Somewhere between these two, there is the reality of everyday life. Applied physics is about translating a deep understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of physics into concrete results to benefit society. The Applied Physics Master's programme educates students to assume positions on the forefront of understanding in the field of applied physics, and to develop practical applications from an awareness of the opportunities and needs of society. The programme combines elements of a standard Master’s programme in engineering with a more theoretically based programme in advanced physics. The programme consists of a core curriculum and a specialisation. The core curriculum contains modules in advanced general physics and mathematics, as well as elective modules associated with specific research themes. In the second year, all students write a research thesis. The core curriculum is divided into five separate tracks: imaging science and technology; multi-scale physics; quantum nanoscience; bionanoscience; and radiation, radionuclides and reactors. Students also choose

an area of specialisation from the following seven options: research and development; management of technology; sustainability in technology; education; astronomy and instrumentation; entrepreneurship; and the Casimir Pre-PhD specialisation. MSc Programme in BioMedical Engineering

BioMedical Engineering (BME) applies engineering principles and technologies to medicine and biology. The BME Master’s at TU Delft is a multidisciplinary programme which aims to provide you with the skills to design mechatronic devices such as instruments for minimal invasive surgery, limb replacement prostheses, joint replacement prostheses, microsensors, stimulation implants and a range of imaging systems from ultrasound and conventional X-ray to CT, MRI and PET/SPECT. The programme provides a basis in human physiology and an overview of technology used in the medical practice. Courses and research assignments explore a wide range of areas including human movement analysis, musculoskeletal modelling, identification of the (reflexive) control loops in the musculoskeletal system, biomaterials, bioelectricity, imaging, physics of medical image acquisition, image processing, pattern recognition and radiotherapy. These are complemented by general Master’s courses in such fields as design, mechatronics, micro-electronics, physics, material and mechanical engineering. Courses are offered in three TU Delft faculties – Applied Sciences; Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science; and Mechanical, Marine and Materials Engineering. The programme gives students the highly specialised skills demanded for the design, development and use of software and hardware for devices ranging from cell phones and desktop computers to main frames and supercomputers. Students in the programme study system software, including programming, operating systems, and compilers; networks and computer architecture; and the design of software tools and methodologies for synthesis, physical design, VLSI, hardware-software co-design, systems-on-chip, testing and performance analysis. The aim of the Construction Management and Engineering (CME) MSc programme is to give students broad management and construction engineering knowledge and provide them with the skills necessary to play leading roles in a transition towards more sustainable solutions gaining momentum in the building and construction industry. As a CME student, you will familiarise yourself with existing management and engineering practices, and learn how you can help to achieve the change in the construction industry, taking into account economic, social, environmental and ethical factors, and assess the consequences of such change. Electrical engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. These days, electrical engineering covers a range of subtopics including power engineering, electronics, control systems, signal processing and telecommunications.

At TU Delft, the central themes addressed in the MSc programme in Electrical Engineering include electromagnetism, analog and digital systems, silicon device technology, communications networks, wireless communication systems, high power electronics and systems, signal processing and radar technology. These themes are reflected in each of the programme’s three tracks: Electrical Power Engineering (name has changed?!), Microelectronics and Telecommunications.

Career prospectsWith the extraordinary advances made in electrical engineering in recent decades and the dependence in society

The MSc programme in Design for Interaction focuses on the way in which people and products interact. The goal of the programme is to educate designers WHO understand what people do with and expect from products they use in everyday life – designers who are able to design products appropriate to users’ needs and expectations. To gain the required skills and understanding, students pursue a multi-disciplinary course of study covering topics such as ergonomics, aesthetics, interaction design, psychology and sociology. Visualisation and conceptualisation play an important part in this, as do the examination of the interaction between people and products, and the development, testing and refinement of prototypes.

Career prospectsThe programme prepares graduates for positions as product or interaction designers, R&D specialists, and usability consultants, and also

Embedded systems are combinations of hardware and software that are used to control devices, processes or larger systems. Embedded systems control everything from automobile engines and digital TV set-top boxes to pacemakers and nuclear reactors; they are pervasive and their importance is growing rapidly. The MSc Programme in Embedded Systems focuses on the design methodology of hardware and software environments. It covers a wide range of topics including integrated circuit design, computer architecture, communication networks, control theory, real-time operating systems, software engineering and formal methods for embedding applications. The MSc programme in Industrial Ecology is a collaborative programme offered jointly by Leiden University and Delft University of Technology. As an interdisciplinary programme, Industrial Ecology draws on insights and knowledge derived from natural sciences, social sciences and engineering. The Industrial Ecology programme trains students in analysis of environmental impacts, sustainable design methodologies, and strategies for initiating change in society. Industrial Ecology is an emerging scientific discipline that promotes a systemic approach to human problems, integrating technical, environmental and social aspects. The cell is the building block of life, the smallest unit with the characteristics of living systems. Increased knowledge of the mechanisms of the cell can lead to cleaner industry, better medicines, new methods for combating diseases and isolating enzymes for the development of improved foodstuffs. The MSc programme in Life Science & Technology provides its graduates with an understanding of cell biology and cellular processes. This relatively new, multidisciplinary area combines fundamental and applied knowledge from the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Technology, Informatics and Mathematics. Mechanical engineers design, develop and build an enormous range of technical systems and mechanisms for industry and consumers. At TU Delft, the fundamental goal of the MSc programme in Mechanical Engineering is to give students both a broad and an in-depth understanding of all mechanical engineering disciplines. The programme trains engineers to handle the entire process of innovative thinking, design, manufacturing and operation. Students select a track from among the six choices.

Programme Tracks•TransportationEngineering focuses

on the sustainable and effective development, design, construction and operation of marine and ground transport systems. Often this includes the integration of different modes of transportation.

•ControlEngineering is about the analysis and design of reliable high-performance measurement and control strategies for a wide variety of dynamic technological processes. The track places particular emphasis on two fields of industrial application: advanced process control and motion control for electromechanical and servohydraulic systems.

•SustainableProcessesandEnergyTechnologies gives students the technological knowledge and the theoretical, numerical and experimental skills to play an active role in the development of innovative new energy and process technologies. Students study key basic disciplines, including thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, process modelling and simulation, and process equipment design.

•PrecisionandMicrosystemsEngineering trains students in such disciplines as advanced simulation, mechatronics, smart Microsystems and high-precision production techniques – all of which play an integral role in the design and development of extremely small devices.

•BioMechanicalDesign focuses on systems designed to interact with biological systems (such as the human body), or systems that

follow the principles of biological systems (biomimetics). Examples are telemanipulation systems (surgical robots, offshore and space robots) and steerable endoscopes for intestinal examination using principles found in octopus tentacles.

•SolidandFluidMechanicsfocuses on the fundamentals of contemporary mechanics for applications in the design, modelling and control of all manner of structures and systems essential in our daily lives. Consistent with trends in the field, the emphasis in the programme is more on numerical models and techniques for the analysis and design of equipment and systems, rather than analytical approaches.

•MaterialsEngineeringandApplications covers the functions of existing materials and the design of new materials. Knowledge of materials is essential to optimise structures and to drive technological innovation. In the programme, students learn to utilise their knowledge in applications across a range of sectors: for example, light weight materials for the automotive industry, strong materials for offshore platforms, and materials capable of functioning normally in a radioactive environment.

More than 70 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water. Offshore engineering is all about applying technologies to the difficult offshore environment: developing systems for the resource recovery from the earth’s seabed, laying underwater cables, and designing fixed and floating platforms for the oil and gas industry, dredging vessels for the dredging industry, dredging equipment for land reclamation projects, and offshore wind farms. In the ‘Information Age’, it is essential that we manage information well and that we are able to interact with it easily and efficiently. The aim of the Master’s programme in Media and Knowledge Engineering is to give engineers the skills they will need to design and refine applications for the handling, processing, storing, accessing, presentation and use of information. Graduates will acquire the skills to design and build intelligent systems for information and knowledge processing and to design, create and test intelligent user interfaces. These are skills of vital importance in the processing of medical images, the encoding of audio and video data, the design of secure and private digital data management systems, and in speech recognition, games, multimedia retrieval systems, and artificial intelligence.

The Science Education and Communication programme bridges the gap between science and technology on the one hand and society on the other. There are two separate tracks within the programme. The Science Communication track prepares you for positions facilitating the transfer of knowledge between scientists and key players in industry and government, or between scientists and the general public. You will deepen your knowledge of science and technology through advanced studies and learn to apply principles of communication theory to situations where effective communication of complex scientific concepts is required. This track is taught in English. The Science Education track prepares you for a career as a teacher of mathematics, physics, chemistry or computer science, and is only taught in Dutch. In the programme, you will deepen

your knowledge of the subjects you will teach, and gain extensive teaching skills. The programme also covers the development of educational programmes and materials, and includes a period of practical training.

Career prospectsBecause they serve as bridges between science and technology and society, Science Communication graduates have key roles to play in industry and business, government, the media, research institutes and universities, and NGOs. The Track in Science Education focuses primarily on a career in Dutch upper secondary general education institutions (HAVO and VWO).

MSc Programme in Sustainable Energy Technology

The programme provides engineers with broad-based, interdisciplinary knowledge of technologies and systems which influence the sustainable generation of energy. The programme includes a number of basic courses such as physical transport phenomena and electrical power engineering, as well as specialised courses in fields such as energy from biomass, solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier and intelligent electrical networks. Three quarters of the programme is devoted to science and engineering modules, and one quarter includes social science modules which address societal and economic aspects of energy technology. At the end of the first year, students are involved in combined studies of various sustainable energy sources as part of a systems integration project. There is also the opportunity for an industrial internship. Students undertake a research project and thesis in their field of interest in the second year of the programme.

The MSc programme in Sustainable Energy Technology is a joint programme of the 3TU.Federation of the three universities of technology

in the Netherlands. Course modules are similar at all three universities. Students may carry out their Master’s thesis research at any of the three universities, depending on their choice of research subject.

The MSc programme in Systems and Control covers the analysis and design of reliable high-performance measurement and control strategies for a wide variety of dynamic technological processes. It focuses on fundamental generic aspects of systems and control engineering and stresses the multidisciplinary nature of the field, with applications in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied physics, chemical engineering and aerospace engineering. The purpose of the Master's Programme in Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management (SEPAM) is to educate students to become designers and managers of large-scale and complex multi-actor systems within technology domains such as transport and logistics (TIL), information and communication technology (ICT), industrial production and energy (EWI) or land-use and development (LUD). The programme provides students with the capability to apply technical knowledge in the world of management, and focuses on engineering and decision-making processes at this interface between the public and private sectors. Students will gain the ability to design and manage the engineering process of large, complex, often messy problems in which social, political, organisational and technical elements must all be given consideration. “In the Science Education and Communication programme I chose the Communication track to develop qualities beyond the maths skills I already had. I chose mathematics as I liked it; I switched to SEC because I am a social person and wanted to combine maths with other aspects of business. The change was hard but interesting, from models, theorems and proofs to communicating science with its pool of concepts, thoughts and practice. Currently I am doing my graduation project at the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR in Amsterdam. I am looking at queuing at air terminals to reduce waiting times.

Here I was able to combine two aspects of the Master’s. The mathematical model needed study of passenger motivation and behaviour. The research led to some important model features.

What I noticed from visiting company fairs like “De Delftse Bedrijvendagen” is that all sorts of companies are interested in my combined social science/technology profile, from Shell to Corus to Philips. I still have some months to go and then it’s up to me to choose.”

5. Practical information for applicants with a Dutch degree

TU Delft BSc degree

Students who hold a BSc degree from TU Delft are admitted if the main subject focus in the BSc phase is related to the MSc degree course they intend to pursue. The MSc programmes in Management of Technology, and Engineering and Policy Analysis are open to all students who have achieved good BSc grades in technology or science. The programme’s Board of Examiners decide on the admission of TU Delft applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in a different discipline.

A matrix developed for each of the Bachelor’s programmes at the 3TU partner universities indicates the availability of transfer options to the Master’s programmes. Please refer to www.3tudoorstroommatrix.nl

Admission HBO students

Students with a degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (HBO) may transfer to a TU Delft Master's degree programme. You may be admitted if the main subject of your degree is closely related to the

Master's programme you intend to pursue, and you have passed the Mathematics and English entrance exams. For most MSc programmes you are required to follow a ‘bridging’ programme to compensate for subjects not covered in sufficient depth during the HBO programme (for example mathematics & physics).

HBO students may take the bridging programme in two ways: 1. After completing the HBO degree programme; 2. During their HBO studies: you take the bridging programme as a minor subject. After completion of the HBO programme you can progress to the related academic programme. This option is only available to students at one of the Universities of Applied Sciences (HBOs) with which TU Delft has signed a covenant. New students wishing to begin their studies in September 2011 should apply through tudelft.studielink.nl. Please make certain that you apply before 1 August 2011. At this site you can also apply for student grants and loans known in Dutch as ‘studiefinanciering’.

2: Signing up at TU Delft

Have you applied via StudieLink? The central student administration organisation CSA will further process the application. CSA will inform you about your registration between mid June and the second week of August 2011.

Money zoneStudying costs money. In addition to the traditional costs of living and insurance coverage, there are a number of study-related costs. Below is an overview of the tuition fees. Starting up – the Welcoming week What is known as the ‘OWee’ in Dutch (Ontvangstweek) is the orientation week for all new Delft students. ‘Goedemorgen. Hoe gaat het?’ ‘Mag ik twee jus d’orange?’ ‘Good morning. How are you? May I have two glasses of orange juice please?’ Although the MSc programmes are taught in English and most people in the Netherlands communicate well enough in English, it is useful and fun to be able to speak some Dutch. TU Delft’s Institute of Technology and Communication offers a range of Dutch language courses. You may register for participation shortly after arriving in Delft. Travel and transport

In the Netherlands almost everyone owns a bike. This means of transport, which is cheap and ideal for short distances, is very popular amongst students. There are several shops which sell reasonably priced second-hand bicycles. Public transport is safe, clean and efficient. The Netherlands has more than 350 railway stations. Fast intercity trains link up the main cities and slow trains operate between the smaller towns.

6. Practical information for applicants with an international degree

For € 55 you can purchase a reduction card which entitles you to 40% reductions on each ticket you buy, provided that you travel after 9.00 a.m. International train services also mean that a number of international hotspots are within easy reach. Brussels is only 2 hours away and it will only take you 4 hours to reach Paris. For the shorter distances you can easily travel by tram or bus. In addition to Schiphol Airport, the Netherlands has several smaller airports (like the one in Rotterdam) from which flights are available for weekend trips to European destinations slightly further a field, such as Paris, Berlin or Milan. Discount travel companies such as ‘Easy Jet’, and ‘Ryan Air’ sometimes offer tickets at incredibly low prices. Before embarking on an international trip we would advise you to first establish whether or not you require a visa for the country you are intending to visit.

Pastoral care and religion

Freedom of worship is a fundamental right in the Netherlands and religion is seen as something that is very personal.

Dutch church-goers are split fairly evenly between Roman Catholics and Protestants. There are also over one million Muslims living in the Netherlands, as well as various other religious minorities such as Buddhists and Hindus. The International Student Chaplaincy (ISC) helps international students of different religious persuasions to feel at home in Delft. Muslim students are welcome to worship at one of the mosques located in Delft. On Friday afternoon, prayers are held in different locations on campus.Website ISC: www.iscnetherlands.nl

International Office

Going abroad to study is a big step. It involves living alone, being away from your family, going to a different country and often, being confronted with different ways of learning. This is all very nice and exciting but there is no denying that it can also be quite tough at times. Should you have any problems or questions, Education and Student Affairs can provide all the help you need. The department can advise you on a wide range of

issues relating to matters such as accommodation, university enrolment, insurance, residence permits and legal questions. If you have personal problems you can make an appointment with one of the student psychologists. For students who are disabled this is the place that can put you in touch with a specialised counsellor. During office hours (9.00 to 17.00) the information desk is open to all students (see also Contact Information).

Services for MSc students

Accommodation

The International Office of TU Delft can arrange housing accommodations for enrolled MSc students. As the number of incoming international students is increasing, housing is limited. Unfortunately accommodation is therefore is not guaranteed. The rent for private student units averages between € 450 and € 600 per month and includes gas, water, electricity, internet connections and municipal taxes. If you wish to rent a unit, you sign a one-year contract upon arrival in Delft. You are also required to pay a cash deposit of approximately € 300 for

mediation and administration. After the first year, you will be given the opportunity to extend the contract for the second year of your studies. Please note that these contracts can only be cancelled if you terminate your studies and officially withdraw from TU Delft as a student. This amount will be reimbursed once the contract period has elapsed, provided that you leave your room in the state you found it in when you arrived. The housing corporation will inspect your room before you move out. Unfortunately, TU Delft can only provide accommodation for MSc students. We are unable to provide accommodation for spouses or children. Please note that the monthly rent and the deposit have to be covered by you.

An airport ‘meet and greet’ service

Each year TU Delft fixes a number of ‘Meet and Greet’ days for the purposes of welcoming and meeting MSc students upon arrival at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. The dates of these days will be given in the admission information. On the ‘Meet and Greet’ days, a TU Delft contact person will meet you at Schiphol Airport and accompany you to Delft.

“During my Bachelor in Engineering Physics at De Haagse Hogeschool I took the second year introduction to quantum mechanics at TU Delft. The lively way this course was taught, with real-

life examples from the frontiers of research, made me choose Applied Physics at Delft. With the support of my academic counsellor, I quickly adapted to university ways. I feel Delft Master programmes really teach a different way of thinking and are not simply an extension of the skills and knowledge taught earlier. Introduction week

The Introduction week is a preparatory course for all international students enrolling in one of TU Delft’s Master’s programmes. The main objective of the introduction week is to prepare you thoroughly, but in a pleasant way, for participation in the TU Delft educational system and to introduce you to issues related to technological development in the Netherlands and in Western Europe as a whole. The important elements of the introduction week are to learn all about teamwork, oral and written communication and interdisciplinary study. The Introduction programme constitutes an excellent introduction to Delft, to getting to know your fellow students and to settling down in Delft. The Introduction week is free of charge and takes place in the last week of August. All students are obliged to participate.

Supplementary services for non-EU/EFTA nationals

Visa

If you require a visa to enter the Netherlands, TU Delft will mediate for you. Your visa will normally be issued within six weeks of TU Delft’s submitting the visa application to the Ministry of

Justice’s Immigration and Naturalisation Department. Before TU Delft can apply for your visa, we must have proof that your financial resources meet the criteria laid down by the Dutch Ministry of Justice. You should be able to finance the first year’s tuition fee and provide enough money to cover all the first year’s living expenses (approximately € 8,000). This amount for living expenses has been set by the Dutch Naturalisation and Immigrations Services but does not necessarily reflect the actual cost of living.) TU Delft can only apply for your visa once the first year’s tuition fee sum has been received together with the amount required to cover living expenses. We will reimburse the amount intended to cover your first year’s living expenses by paying that into your Dutch bank account shortly after your arrival in Delft. Unfortunately TU Delft can only arrange visas for MSc students, not for their partners or other relatives.

Health & liability insurance

In the Netherlands it is compulsory to have health and liability insurance. TU Delft will arrange the appropriate insurance for you. The insurance provided will cover all normal medical treatment requirements. It will not, however, include costs for the treatment of

Admission requirements and application proceduresIn order to be considered for admission to a Master’s programme you need to meet TU Delft’s general admission requirements. Some programmes have specific requirements, please take a thorough look at the programme’s information on www.master.tudelft.nl. A programme selection committee will evaluate each individual application to decide whether the applicant can be admitted. The admission decision will be communicated to you by e-mail and post. We will confirm receipt of your application by e-mail.

You can apply during the final year of your Bachelor’s studies.

The first step in the application procedure is to fill in the online application form on the website. Please note that the University can only start processing once it has received copies of the application documents listed below (on paper, not in electronic form). Incomplete applications and applications submitted by e-mail or fax cannot be processed.

You will not have to pay an application fee if we receive your complete application (online form plus application documents) by 1 November 2010. After this date you will be charged a non-refundable application fee of € 50.

Certified translations may, alternatively, bear the original logo and stamp of the sworn translator who did the translation. Letters of reference should bear the original signature.

2. Please note that if you are in the process of obtaining your BSc degree, you may also apply for admission to an MSc programme at TU Delft. You may be conditionally admitted to TU Delft on the basis of your provisional transcript and detailed information on the curriculum, relevant research and the anticipated graduation date. Living and other expenses

The cost of living and studying, which includes such things as food, accommodation, transport, books, compulsory health insurance, social life expenses and study trip costs, is estimated to be, on average, € 850 to € 1,100 per month. In addition, you will need approximately € 1,500 to cover all initial settling-in expenses.

Study and work

Dutch law allows foreign students to work part-time while studying, but stipulates that income from employment should be viewed as ‘additional’. In fact, this means that you should be able to finance your MSc programme without working. Non-EU/EFTA nationals are permitted to work a maximum of 10 hours per week or 3 months full-time during the summer holiday period, which falls in June, July and August. Please note that your residence permit will be retracted if you work more. A work permit, to be applied for by the employer, is compulsory. EU/EFTA nationals do not need work permits. Several of the job centres (uitzendbureau’s) are willing to mediate in finding part-time jobs for students in the business and industrial sectors.

Jobs are not always available and you may also come up against a language problem. Any employment you find should at least fit in with your study schedule. We would advise you to first concentrate on settling in and, if you want to find work, to start looking for a job once your study is well under way.
