As a socially responsible business, we are committed to supporting charities both on a national and local level. In addition to supporting charity regeneration projects by providing tools and materials from our market leading brands we also support charities through annual donations and contribution schemes.

Charity Donations We are proud to say that we donate £8000 every year to charities that are chosen by our staff. In 2012, over

65% of staff voted to split the money between a mix

of national and local charities, which were

Alzheimer’s Society, Christian Lewis Trust, Kirkwood Hospice and West Yorkshire Dog Rescue.

To celebrate these donations we arrange

a ceremony at our Birstall Head Office each year to present

the cheques to the recipients, but this is only the beginning of the relationship. We strive to build and maintain long-lastingrelationshipswith

every charity we are associated with and look to support them

any way we can.

Making charity count

Charity Matching Scheme A significant number of PPG employees go to great lengths every year to support a wide variety of worthy causes and in recognition of this dedication, we are proud to offer a charity matching scheme.

The scheme is designed to allow staff to apply for a contribution from PPG to their charity fundraising initiative up to the value of £100. In 2012 alone, we donated over £1000 to a wide range of different charities supported by our employees.

Charitable Contributions Program The quality of life enjoyed by our employees and their families is of the utmost importance to us, which is why we are delighted to award charity grants through our Global Charitable Contributions Program. This initiative is designed to reflect PPG’s company interests and values by enhancing the standard of living in the communities in which our employees and families live and work.

Our Decorating Centre Employee Forum took the lead on this initiative in 2011, consulting its members on a local level across the network before proposing charities for inclusion in the program. In 2011, grants of £2,013 were awarded to nine different children’s charities across the UK & Ireland, a total of over £18,000.

In 2013 a £20,000 donation was given to Oakwell Hall, in Birstall providing a much needed boost to this local landmark.

Oakwell Hall was chosen due to its specific focus on education within the local community. The museum, which is within walking distance of our head office is often visited by colleagues and seemed the ideal choice.

Along with Oakwell Hall, the Red House Museum in nearby Gomersal will also benefit from the donation. Staff at the two properties will use the donation to create a full, varied programme of events at both museums throughout the year. In addition, the money will also help fund essential maintenance costs, including thelong-awaitedrebuildingofoneofthechimneys,planned for later this year.

“It’s fantastic that PPG has been

able to support such an important

historic local landmark and ensure

it continues to be enjoyed for

generations to come. I’m sure our

staff will take great pride in knowing

the part PPG has played in Oakwell

Hall’s future.”

Corporate social responsibility is core to our business and in 2010 we took the decision to consolidate all the fundraising from across our Johnstone’s Decorating Centre network to support the Help for Heroes charity.

Representatives from each of our 187 Decorating Centres voted for their chosen charity and Help for Heroes, which delivers a national network of support for wounded service personnel and their families, was the unanimous winner.

As of June 2013, we are delighted to say that we

have raised in excess of £27,000 for the

charity through a series of initiatives across our network.

The majority of the money has

been raised through fundraising activities

and the sale of Help for Heroes wristbands and

other merchandise. We also raised over £10,000 at the 2013

Johnstone’s Painter of the Year event thanks to the generosity of the UK’s painting and decorating community.

by the energy of our employees and

truely inspired by the dedication they

have shown since Help for Heroes was

chosen as our designated charity.”

The commitment we show to our staff forms an important part of our sustainability agenda and nowhere is this demonstrated more fervently than with the regular ‘Wellness Week’ events.

‘Wellness Week’ offers a range of activities to promote healthy lifestyle choices to staff, as well as providing generalhealthadvice,whichincludes10-minutehealth checks available to all employees.

‘Wellness Week’ also allows us to demonstrate how people can fit exercise into the working day by organisingaseriesofhalf-hourlunchtimewalks.Wealso arrange for representatives from local gyms to be on hand to speak to individuals and answer any questions they might have.

Taking pride in our people

Although PPG provides a range of healthy options in the "Filling Station" canteen throughout the year, we place special emphasis on nutrition during ‘Wellness Week’, with free fruit and special offers on healthy meals. We also invite employees to give their feedback and provide suggestions for improvements to the canteen menu.

In addition to the popular ‘Wellness Week’, we regularly distribute bulletins with general health advice, including information on stress management and healthy eating. We also organise team fitness challenges where people are invited to participate, one of which was cycling from the northern most Johnstone’s Decorating Centre in Inverness to the most southerly point in Truro.

At PPG we are committed to creating a supportive environment where individuals can flourish.

We actively encourage our employees to contribute to the business and have created the PPG Ideas Scheme to allow staff to put forward their suggestions for how we can improve our business.

The scheme is open to everyone and there is even the opportunity to win prize money if an idea is put into practice. In fact, we have awarded over £15,000 in prizes and implemented over 51 ideas across the business since the scheme was launched.

Rewarding employees

Committed to staff wellbeing

In addition, we run an annual Employee of the Year award, which rewards outstanding members of staff and is designed to encourage employee engagement as well as giving something back to dedicated team members who go the extra mile to perform in their jobs.

What makes these awards, which cover all aspects of the PPG business, so much more meaningful to recipients, is the fact that nominations are made by their peers.

The Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year competition aims to showcase the very best fresh new talent, reward best practice and encourage young people to enter the industry.

The competition is open to painting and decorating students and apprentices across the UK and is designed to test the students’ skills in a number of key areas including preparation, application and ability to work from a written specification.

Devised and judged by our technical experts, the competition begins with a series of regional heats held at colleges across the country. The winners of each regional heat then go on to compete in the final, which is held over two days at the National Painting and Decorating Show.

As one of the world’s largest coatings manufacturers we take our responsibility to invest in the next generation of painters and decorators very seriously.

Investing in the future

PPG has continued to support the future of professional painting and decorating by delivering a painting masterclass to a group of enthusiastic students as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2013.

The event, which was organised in conjunction with the Painting and Decorating Association and CITB Construction Skills, was held at the Leeds College of Building and was specifically designed to give students a taste of the industry to whet their appetites for further training and study.

PPG’s technical experts were on hand during the day to answer questions, provide practical information, assist with demonstrations and help provide students with an insight into the industry as a whole. The students were also able to meet a number of decorators working in both the commercial and domestic sectors, who were able to pass on invaluable knowledge and advice to them.

Thedayalsoincludedplentyofhands-onexperiencewith a host of displays, demonstrations and practical activities.

Involvement in the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn valuable skills and give their future career prospects a significant boost.

“ The competition gives you the

chance to demonstrate your skills

and gain experience for the future.

Hopefully it will encourage more

young people to get into the trade.”

Masterclass gives a taste of the industry

said: “Apprentices are the workmen and women of tomorrow so it is vital they get as much support and experience as possible. The idea behind this event was to get them communicating with people already working in the industry and to give them the best head start when leaving school and considering a career as a painter and decorator.”

Gavin Smith, Head of Year 11 at The Farnley Academy in Leeds, brought five students along to the event and said: “This was a brilliant idea to help the students decide if they want to launch into a career in the painting and decorating industry. They all had a really good time and learnt a lot.”

Supporting the next generation

“We’re passionate about the industry

so it was a great pleasure to be

able to pass our knowledge on to

the next generation of painters and

decorators. It was great to see such

enthusiasm from the students involved

and fantastic to hear so many were

seriously considering a career in the

industry by the end of the day.”

Johnstone's Paint Trophy shows community spiritThe long standing sponsorship of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has allowed PPG to engage and support football clubs, fans and communities like never before. Seeing the joy that the competition brings only makes us more determined to continue our strong relationships with communities.

Themuchsought-afterTrophyannuallyundertakesatwo-stagetourofthehometownsoftheFinalistclubs,which gives the fans the chance to really engage with sport and get close to the silverware. Appearances from the club's star players and managers generate even more interest, while local dignitaries also ensure the community benefits from the success of their football team.

We have always prided ourselves on encouraging the development of exciting young talent, and for the 2012/13 season, Johnstone’s were also proud to sponsor the Football League’s Young Player of the Year award. From a hotly contested list of nominees, Blackpool’s Thomas Ince was the 2013 winner.

Continuing our support of young and promising talent, the ‘Be A Johnstone’s Journalist’ competition has also offered budding young wordsmiths, between the ages of 11 and 18, the chance to pen a report on their favourite team. The winners were given the chance of a lifetime of an exclusive interview with the manager or a player of their team.

Johnstone’s also gives youngsters the opportunity to demonstrate their creative talents with the annual ‘Design A Boot’ competition which was open to children under the age of 12. Snazzy and colourful designs have been the order of the day with entrants showing great flair and creativity.

“It was a terrific feeling for

everyone at the club to win the

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. It’s a

terrific tournament to be involved

in and the Final was a day none

of our players or supporters will

ever forget. It had a huge impact

on the club and the town as a

Sustainability is core to everything we do as a business and nowhere is this more evident than in our Johnstone’s Ecological Solutions range.

The range features our most popular Johnstone’s products that have had their environmental credentials independently tested and verified and now boast the coveted EU Ecolabel accreditation.

All products in the range maintain the same high quality and performance characteristics as they always have done, these meet the prestigious Ecolabel’s testing criteria in order to assure our customers that we have not foregone our product quality commitment to them.

The environmental criterion behind the EU Ecolabel accreditation is tough and only the products which are kindest to the environment are entitled to carry the Ecolabel flower mark. These robust rules are implemented by the European Commission following wide consultation with industry and environmental experts. Certification is approved by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in the UK. The label itself is only awarded after verification that the product meets the rigorous environmental and performance standards.

EU Ecolabel standards are based on several factors, including studies that analyse the impact of the products on the environment throughout their life cycle. This starts from raw material extraction in the pre-productionstage,throughtoproduction,distributionand disposal.

The Ecolabel accreditation doesn’t just assess the raw ingredients in ensuring they meet strict environmental standards, but the product performance is also considered for environmental impact. This highlights how accredited products hold additional environmental benefits, such as the high opacity levels, increased durability of the products and also the high spread rates offered by Johnstone’s products also meaning that less paint is required to cover a surface.

As sustainability comes to the forefront of building design and development, we can proudly say that we will be on the front line in offering these products to our customers.

The launch of Johnstone’s Endura Super Durable Matt paint is a great step forward for us in terms of creating ultimate paint endurance and having a positive impact on sustainability, the environment and the industry.

An innovative approach to paint

that reduces the requirement to

repaint a wall and achieves Ecolabel

accreditation was tough but a

rewarding challenge to take.”

Matthew Sorge, Product Technologist

Endura has been developed to withstand 10,000 scrubs to the industry ISO and BS test standards, meaning it is up to 50 times more scrubbable than a standard vinyl matt. This ensures the paint will last longer on walls that are subject to both stringent cleaning regimes such as in healthcare environments, and also in corridors and areas with high levels of foot traffic and circulation such as schools or shopping centres. As the paint will maintain its aesthetics for longer, standard building maintenance cycles for redecorating can be extended, and in doing so boost the environmental credentials of a building as it will require significantly less painting maintenance over the course of its lifetime.

In addition, we ensured that Endura was specifically formulated to join PPG’s Ecological Solutions range of products in meeting the stringent Ecolabel product environmental criteria. This allows customers to use it safe in the knowledge that it meets the strict cradle to grave credentials stipulated by the European Commission.

Water based paints making a splash

Extending maintenance cycles with Endura

Water based coatings are becoming increasingly popular within specification as construction and building professionals look to specify and use products that will help them meet their ever-evolving sustainability targets.

When creating colour schemes for public buildings in line with the Equalities Act, careful consideration is required. Design schemes need to be aesthetically pleasing to the given area and to the people using it, whilst also providing a level of contrast between critical surfaces to allow adequate manoeuvrability for any persons who may be partially sighted.

Choosing the correct colour scheme for a healthcare facility is of the utmost importance if the facilities are being used by partially sighted people.

Our Colour Consultants are fully conversant with The Building Regulations Approved Document Part M which issues guidance for public service providers who must consider access and usage of a building by people with disabilities as highlighted in the Equalities Act.

Colour schemes for the Equalities Act

If you’re involved in creating an environment for partially sighted people, or the wellbeing of others, our consultants are able to offer the right options. We will think about Light Reflectance Values and how partially sighted people navigate unfamiliar areas, how they stop and take visual clues from the space around them.

In addition, our colour consultants can suggest different colour schemes for each floor or department to help differentiate areas of the building. This can assist people withtheirway-findingthroughthebuildingandhelpgive each department a unique sense of identity.

In order to ensure that our high service levels are maintained and continually improved upon, we stringently apply the Quality Management System ISO EN 9001:2008 Part 1 as a framework to our manufacturing processes.

This standard, which is audited and verified by the BSI twice a year, prescribes systematic control of activities to ensure that the needs and expectations of customers are met.

Meeting the highest standards

The standard requires us to have a series of documentation, which includes:

-AQualityManualthatoutlinesourintentions to operate in a quality manner

-AQualityPolicythatdemonstratestopmanagement commitment to customer satisfaction and continual improvement

-AProceduresDocumentthatoutlineswhatwe do in order to complete a task

Consistently achieving ISO 9001 showcases the importance we place on customer satisfaction and we look forward to continuing to give our customers the peace of mind that they are using products produced to the very highest quality standards.

In addition to addressing the environmental impact of our products and manufacturing processes, we also actively seek to reduce the carbon footprint of our logistics and distribution activities.

Cross-functionalteamsselectedfromlogistics,routeplanning and vehicle drivers were created with the objective of identifying areas where we could improve the performance of our fleet of 44 HGV lorries and 179 branch based delivery vehicles by both reducing emissions and improving efficiency.

Initially the teams focused on a number of key areas including:

Driving down emissions

There have been a number of positive outcomes from the work undertaken by the teams including the setting up of partnership schemes with external suppliers to facilitate the backhaul of products and materials resulting in improved utilisation of our vehicles, reduced transport costs and a reduction in vehicle journeys undertaken by third party carriers. A prime example of this being where, working in conjunction with our pallet manufacturer, our vehicles now collect pallets on their return journeys to our Birstall distribution warehouse.

Driving style is a fundamental element within the performance of any vehicle and therefore the carbon emissions generated. The team introduced new programmes focusing on ways to improve the miles per gallon (MPG) achieved by the fleet including reduced speed and energy saving tyre trials. They then published a league table showing MPG ratings for each driver each week to encourage friendly competition and a measurable improvement in ratings.

-Deliveryscheduling,routeplanningandreduction of “empty running”.

-Vehiclespecification,aerodynamicsandtyre performance, overall utilisation and maintenance schedules.

-Drivingstyle

The projects were undertaken whilst at all times bearing in mind the need to at least maintain or, where possible, improve customer service levels.

Proud to achieve zero waste to landfillWe’re delighted that our sites in West Yorkshire now have a zero waste to landfill policy, which means that all of our waste is reused, recycled or used for energy.

It’s an unavoidable truth that many of PPG’s production processes will result in waste, but it’s testament to our commitment to the environment that we can now proudly state that none of our waste goes to landfill.

In addition in 2012, both from our Johnstone’s Decorating Centre network and the Birstall and Morley manufacturing sites, 160 tonnes of card and 71 tonnes of plastic film were recycled.

In an effort to reduce emissions across our network of Johnstone’s Decorating Centres we have reduced the number of Decorating Centre distribution vehicles operating across the UK & Ireland throughout 2013.

In addition, the average weight carried by each delivery has increased by 15% resulting in a more efficient vehicle usage demonstrated in the reduction of cost per kilo by 35.7% and reduced driving hours by 13.5%. Key to the success of this project was the focus on maintaining our service levels to all customers.

We’re also taking steps to improve energy efficiencies through the implementation of LED lighting across our nationwide network of Johnstone’s Decorating Centres, which as well as improving the lighting and overall work environment for our staff, will also have a positive impact on the environment by reducing our overall energy consumption by 70% and reducing CO2 emissions. LEDs, in contrast to fluorescent tubes, which are classed as hazardous waste, can be easily recycled and have a longer life cycle of 12 years compared to just five for fluorescent lighting, meaning there is significantly less waste and reduced maintenance.

PPG have been a long-term and active member of the British Coatings Federation’s voluntary Coatings Care scheme. The purpose of the scheme is aimed at encouraging paint manufacturers to consider their impact across a range of key areas such as the environment, safety, health, distribution and product stewardship.

Using the Coatings Care as a framework for our activities, we have been able to generate a positive impact in the key areas of focus which has enabled us to demonstrate our commitment to both the industry and the environment.

We consistently analyse how we can maintain our position as one of the coatings industry’s most innovativeandforward-thinkingcompaniesandwe have worked tirelessly to achieve our robust environmental credentials.
