1. Oil-modified urethane is generally the most common surface finish and
is easy to apply. It is a petroleum base with a blendofsyntheticresins,
plasticizers andotherfilm forming ingredients that produces a durable
surface that is moisture-resistant. It is a solvent-base polyurethane that
dries in about eight hours. This type offinish ambers with age. andcomes
indifferent sheenlevels.
2. Moisture-cured urethane is a solvent-base polyurethane that is more
durable and more moisture resistant thanother surface finishes.
Moisture-cure urethane comes innon-yellowing andin ambering types
andis generally available in satinor gloss. These finishes are extremelydifficult to apply, have a strong odor and are best left to the professional.
Curing ofthis type offinish is by absorbing minute quantities ofmoisture
vaporfrom the air, which causes them todry and harden. The curing
process is very dependant onrelative humidity.

3. Water-based urethane is a water-borne urethane with a blendofsyntheticresins, plasticizers andotherfilm forming ingredients that
produces a durable surface that is moisture-resistant. These finishes are
clear andnon-yellowing and are different sheenlevels. They have a milder
odor thanoil-modifiedfinishes have and they dry in about two to three
hours. Water-based urethanes are generally more expensive.
4. Converstion-Varnish Sealers-(Swedish Finishes)- A two-component acid-
curing, alcohol-based sealers. Because oftheirorigin (country), conversionvarnish sealers are oftenreferred to as Swedish finishes
5. Penetrating Sealers - These sealers are spreadon the floor and allowed
to penetrate and are solvent based. The excess sealeris removed with rags
or buffedin with syntheticor steel wool pads. This type offinish often havea color andcan be used to stain and seal the woodfloor. Penetrating Oil
Sealers are made from tung orlinseedoil, with additives improve drying
and hardness.

6. Paste Wax- The oldest, andin some ways the best. Wax is the easiest to
apply, least expensive, fastest drying, easiest torepair, and with proper
care will survive forever. Wax over a penetrating stain, and the system is in
the wood so you wear the wood, not the finish. Wax is spreadin thincoats
for a surface protection after the stain and/or sealeris applied, then buffed
to the desired sheen.
7. Varnish- Vinyl-alkydvarnishes have supersedednaturalvarnish made
from vegetable oils. This product was commonly used before urethanefinishes where introduced.
8. Lacquer - The flammability andincompatibility ofthis floorfinish is NOT
a recommended by many manufacturers. This finish should avoided.
9. Shellac - This product (natural shellac) contains wax andis not widely
usedfor top coating in today's woodflooring market. Dewaxed shellacisbecoming used more and more for a woodfloor sealer.

Resilient flooring materials provide an economical dense,
non-absorbent flooring surface with relatively good durability
and ease of maintenance. Their degree of resilience enables
them to resist permanent indention while contributing to their
quietness and comfort underfoot. The degree of comfort
provided will depend not only on the materials resilience, but
also on the type of backing used and the hardness of the
supporting substrate.

the advantages of tile over sheet vinyl are lower installation costs and
easier replacement of damaged flooring. Vinyl composition tile (VCT) is the
most popular and economical type of resilient flooring. The tiles are
composed mostly of fillers with comparatively small amounts of binder and
pigments. VCT is more brittle than vinyl sheet flooring.

C. Linoleum
-

The term linoleum is derived from the Latin
botanical terms for flax, "Iinum", and for oil,"oleum".
Linoleum is composed of oxidized linseed
oil or other resins, mixed with ground cork
or wood flour, mineral filler, and color
pigments. This mixture is bonded under
heat and pressure to a fiber backing, typically burlap or felt, in various sizes and
thicknesses.

Cork another natural resilient flooring is cork. Cork is actually the
outer layer of the cork oak tree, which is grown In Mediterranean
regions.
Cork can be had in rigid tile or as flexible wall covering, laminated to
cotton or backed with paper in continuous rolls. Cork tile is composed of
granulated cork and natural or synthetic resins that act as binders, then
compressed and baked. A protective finish coat is applied to the
completed tile to give it the qualities of color fastness and stain-resistance. Cork offers excellent acoustic and thermal insulation.
However, because of its absorptive nature, moisture and stains are of
concern. Also, tiles easily chip and crumble at the edges, and fades in
strong sunlight. Cork can also be used as an- underlayment tom
increase the resiliency of other types of finish floors.
Cork tiles are also available with a laminated top layer of vinyl which is
aptly called Vinyl Cork Tiles. This makes them tougher and non-porous.
They can be kept clean by damp mopping.
