Introduction

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects approximately 3.2 million Americans and 1.1% of the world’s population.

Research suggests that men and women are at equal risk of developing the disease, which occurs at similar rates in all ethnic groups around the world.

Introduction part II

Studies show that schizophrenia may be caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain that causes messages in the brain to get mixed up. Scientists believe that schizophrenia, like many other conditions, may result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

No one knows exactly what causes the condition or why schizophrenia affects some people and not others.
