buttons• Increase contrast- changes transparency• Reduce Motion -changes the transition

between apps• On/Off Labels -makes toggles easier to

Siri and Microphone -> Lets you record your voice and convert it to text

• Fosters oral language skill development• Supports ELLs and Emerging writers in

communicating ideas

Tips for STT:• Think about what you are going to say prior to dictating• Dictate in short sentences and phrases but make them complete

sentences• Since the iPad dictation feature only lasts about 30 to 40 seconds, use quick short

bursts• Don’t forget to add punctuation as you speak• Practice makes perfect

Siri – STT• Acts as an intelligent assistant• All you need to do is ask!• Students can ask Siri to:

• take them to a website for research purposes• open most apps• turn on music• answer math questions

Siri • Open Settings >

General > Siri• Turn “Siri” on. Tap on the

switch to enable it (turning it green)

• Options:• Allow “Hey Siri”• Language• Siri Voice• Voice Feedback

Siri• Activate Siri by holding down

the home button

• Instruct (dictate) to Siri:- “Siri what is the forecast

for today?”- “Can you tell me of any good

websites to access for my ancient Egypt project?”

- “What is 2 + 2?”

Microphone - STT• Before we start, make sure

your microphone is enabled

• Settings General Keyboards “Enable Dictation”

MicrophoneOpen the Notes App• Tap the microphone on the keyboard to

indicate that you want to begin dictating• The iPad will record your voice and

turn it into text when you are finished• Tap “Done” to stop dictating• Dictate the following sentence:

“It is raining today. I hope tomorrow will be nice and sunny.”

Microphone• Open the Safari App

• Click on the search box. Dictate the term “weather”

• Experiment with other apps that you commonly use. Use the microphone button to dictate a word or sentence

Speak Screen in Safari• Open the Newsela website in Safari

• Select a news article.

• Turn on Speak Screen. Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear the content of the screen

• A speak screen menu will appear

• iPad read the page from the top

Provides students feedback when typing to fix their mistakes

• As you type the words are read out loud to you

iOS VoiceOver - TTS

• VoiceOver changes the gestures in iOS in order to make it easier for visually impaired individuals to know what they're tapping on before they actually select it

• The iPad and iPhone read the screen to the user – including buttons, icons and other interface elements.

Turning it on:• General Accessibility Tap on VoiceOver under the “Vision”

category• Enable “VoiceOver”

• A screen reader that gives you a description of everything happening on the screen

• Examples: what app you are on, battery level or the text you want to input

Word Prediction

• As you are typing, the iPad can predict what word you are typing and gives you options

• Once you have finished typing, it will predict the next word

• It makes adjustments for what you have typed before

General > Keyboards > Enable “Predictive”

Guided Access & Restrictions• Helps students stay on task• Limits the amount of time a

student can stay on a specific app

• Restricts access to other apps, the Internet, camera etc.

• Enable “Guided Access”• Guided Access will work in any

app• Open Safari• Activate and De-activate:
