Newsletter Update

2018 – 19 13th November 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,Welcome back to a new half term at Brierley! We hope the week holiday was restful!

We would like to say a big thank you to the parents and carers who donated cakes and attendedour annual coffee morning – we are pleased to announce that we raised a fantastic £162.70.Through these donations Macmillan can make even more of a difference for people facingcancer. Many thanks to the year six children and the team of parent and staff volunteers forhelping us to host this event.

We would like to say another big thank you to the parents and carers who donated food and drinkitems towards our Harvest Festival before the half term. The items that were donated will bedistributed by the Salvation Army to the needy families within our local area and community - allpart of the Brierley giving spirit!

And our final big thank you goes towards the FOB team who helped set up our Halloween discoand run the Halloween tuck shop! It was a spectacular evening and it was fantastic to see thechildren dressed up in their costumes.

From Friday 1st February we will be going cashless pay for lunches from this date, as we do foruniform now. All lunches must be booked and paid for online.

Just a few reminders and updates this week:Please make sure your child’s permission slip for the Christmas Pantomime is returned to schoolas soon as possible.Friday 16th November is Wear Something Spotty for Children In Need. The children may come toschool wearing something spotty for a small donation.Friday 16th November is the Parent Consultation Meetings with your child(ren)’s class teacher.Please make sure you are on time for your appointment or are available for your pre-bookedtelephone call.Thursday 22nd November is the Christmas Bingo! The doors will be open at 5:45pm and eyesdown at 6:30pm. Fundraising events like the bingo are important at Brierley as we are then ableto organise trips to Crewe Lyceum free of charge.Friday 23rd November is Non Uniform day! Please bring a bottle as a donation, for Christmas Fair.Friday 30th November The Christmas Fair is returning this year. The school will close at 2:30pm toallow for the children, parents and carers to attend. Year 4: Juraj Sandor for his very hard work in Guided Reading.

Year 5: Ionut Dima for fantastic handwriting.

Year 6: Izzabelle Roberts for a super tipi design.

Year 6 set off on their annual residential to Kingswood Colomendy in North Wales on

Wednesday 24th October. There were 25 pupils who went away for two nights and they

started off the trip with a forest school session at the Cumberland Arena on the Wednesday

morning. We did some team building activities such as Nightline and worked in groups to

produce some natural artwork. We left at lunchtime and our first task on arrival was to make

our beds... a task that the boys won!

Once we had settled in, our first activity was caving in the fantastic man-made cave on site.

Despite lots of tight areas, some physically demanding climbs and some sore knees, everyone

enjoyed the experience. After fuelling up at dinner, we ended the evening with 'Hotspots'

which was a giant Twister-style activity.

After a good sleep the children were raring to go. In the morning both

groups had giant zip wire (which was a huge favourite for most),

problem solving and archery. The afternoon session was even more

challenging, as we had Jacob's Ladder and Leap of Faith, which

required climbing very high and the children gave it their best efforts.

Not everyone got to the top, but they all definitely pushed themselves.

In between the sessions, we tried fencing - something most children

haven’t tried before and again they embraced the challenge and

enjoyed competing with each other. After dinner, we had the

annual House Residential Quiz which was won by Delamere. We end

ended the evening with marshmallows, songs and jokes around the

campfire.

We woke up on Friday morning to some more typical Welsh weather,

rain! This made our two sessions more challenging, but with plenty of

warm layers and waterproofs we carried on. The children did Laser

Zone which was very competitive and great fun in the mud! We alsowent on the Vertical Play Pen before we dried off and returned to school.

The children were very well behaved throughout the trip and showed good independence,

teamwork and communication skills when required. They got stuck in to every activity and

hopefully they have made memories that will last a lifetime.

Thank you to Mr Fletcher and Miss O'Leary for accompanying us on the trip.

Colomendy Residential

We had a very successful harvest festival this year and we

would like to thank everyone for all the food donations.

Reverend Jane and the congregation are extremely grateful

and they are planning on splitting the donations between the

Salvation Army and food banks within Crewe.

Year 5 and 6 kick started the celebration with a harvest poem.

Then, Reception performed the song ‘Big Red

Combine Harvester’.

Year 1 and 2 brightened up everyone’s day

with the song ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’.

Years 3 were up next and they sang the song ‘Cauliflower’s Fluffy’.

The final performance was by Year 4 and they

sang ‘Colours of Day’ . Reverend Jane ended

our celebration with a harvest prayer..

Monday 3rd December: INSET Day

EYFS NEWS

In Little Bears, we have had a spooktacular time! We

have been carving our pumpkin and seeing what’s

inside, made spooky pumpkin faces and became

witches and wizards in the role-play area. We made

sure to do very careful counting as we didn’t want to

turn our teachers into frogs!

After our spooky learning, we learnt about Bonfire Night! We made

firework pictures with chalk on black paper and even made our own

bonfires in the construction area. We also talked about keeping

ourselves safe during bonfire night.

This week, we have begun our new topic of Celebrations. We learnt

about and celebrated Bonfire Night with lots of different activities all

about the fireworks and bonfires. We have created our own bonfire

pictures, used twigs to build shelters, decorated firework

displays with sequins and practised writing in glitter.

In Literacy, we have focused on the story of Owl Babies, we

even got into character and acted out the story!

In Reception, we finished learning our initial alphabet sounds and this

week we have been revisiting them all, playing letter bingo and creating

magical spells! In Maths, we are becoming really good at putting things in

size order.

On the Friday before half term, we had lots of fun making our

Combine Harvester hats which we wore proudly whilst singing

our song at the church for the Harvest Festival. Well doneReception for a brilliant start to your first year at school .

We have been looking at numbers – recognising a number and its

value. The children went on a number hunt outside in our

playground. They really enjoyed working together to find all the

numbers and saying what number they have found. Some

children could even put the numbers in order from 0-10! We have

also been learning how to use our number fans to find the correct

number to match the amount of multilink blocks in a tower.

In phonics, we have been looking at two new letters ‘n’ and ‘m’.

We have had so much fun matching our upper case and lower

case letter sounds and names.

PHASE 2 NEWS

What a great week we had to finish the first fantastic half term in Year 1

and 2!

In English, we finished our work on ‘Burglar Bill’ and ‘Cops and Robbers’.

Year 1 have focused on writing a simple description of Burglar Bill whilst

Year 2 have written a Police Report on a crime Burglar Bill committed.

Both year groups have shown enthusiasm for the topic and enjoyed

and engaged well with their writing!

In Maths, we looked at 3D shapes and their properties, we took part in

shape hunts, practical finding of the faces, vertices and edges and also

finding 2D shapes on the faces of 3D shapes.

We have become scientists! We carried on looking

at materials, investigating the properties of each material. The children

enjoyed testing if the materials were waterproof or not as it involved

using pipettes to squirt water (and getting a little bit wet!).

The children came back full of energy and eager to learn after

the half term which was great to see.

In English, we have spent the first week looking at poems. We have

looked at vocabulary building acrostic poems and spent the first

few days gathering and up-levelling language. This led to the

children writing their own amazing acrostic poems based on play

time!

In Maths, we have started a block of work on addition. The

children have mixed with each other and completed various tasks

linked to addition including practical addition, reasoning and

learning written methods. We have also been linking our number

bonds in as well.

In Science, we have been completing different Science

experiments which the children have really enjoyed! We have

been testing different materials thinking about their properties and

suitability for different jobs e.g. as a swag bag or coat for Burglar

Bill.

It has been great to see a lovely range of fantastic homework

projects brought in this week. It is clear to see the children have

made great efforts and have enjoyed creating their projects and

sharing them in class. Thank you for all of your support at home!

PHASE 3 NEWS

We spent our last week before half term busily preparing for the

Harvest Festival, learning the words to two lively Harvest-themed

songs: Cauliflowers Fluffy and Colours of Day.

In English, we have begun our unit on instructional texts: in Year 3,

pupils had an interactive lesson acting out imperative verbs

whereas in Year 4, pupils began to write Forest School inspired

instructions about lighting fires in the wild.

In the afternoons, Year 3 have been writing non-chronological

reports about the Stone Age and Year 4 have finished their unit on

Rocks and Soil. We also had our final sessions of Tag Rugby in P.E.

The children have worked really hard to apply the skills of passing,

tackling and scoring developed in previous weeks in competitive

games.

We hope everybody had a fantastic half term!

We continued our work on instructions during our English lessons.

We have read different examples of introductions and used this to

help us to write our own introductions. We have looked at how to

punctuate and use bullet points to list equipment needed and

orally rehearsed each instruction to make sure they are clear and

easy to follow.

During our design and technology sessions, Year 3 have been

thinking about what materials they might need to make their own

shelter. We have linked this to our history topic, The Stone Age,

and thought about how they would have constructed shelters

during the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.

We made prototypes of our models using art straws and deciding

upon our own joining techniques. We discuss what we could do to

strengthen our structures and made them more sturdy. We think

our shelters look very good!

PHASE 4 NEWS

Before the half term break, we welcomed back our

Year 6 children from their residential. They had a

fantastic time in Wales, it was lovely to hear that

everyone tried something new and overcame fears

as they attempted new challenges. We are very

proud of them!

Since starting the new term, we have decorated

our tipis using tea staining and coloured markers to

create detailed and authentic Native American

patterns. The teachers have been wowed by the

quality and the children have enjoyed evaluating

their own and each other’s designs.

It was another busy week in Phase 4 just before the half term and

of course we also waved Year 6 off on their residential.

In English, we planned and wrote our own versions of our class story

‘Brave Bear and the Ghosts’ which is a Native American legend.

We applied our sentence work and wrote some super versions of the

story. Continuing the theme of Native America, we got creative and

designed and made our own Native American tipis! We used our

guided reading sessions to learn about Native Americans before

designing our tipis and created them using papier mache.

In maths, we finished our work on calculating the area and perimeter

of shapes, finding the missing lengths and measuring shapes drawn

to scale. We also completed our unit of work on addition which

involved adding mentally, using written methods to add whole and

decimal numbers and solving a range of problems involving addition.

All staff across the school have been

especially impressed by the standard

of homework which has been brought

in by the children in Year 5 and 6. It

has been lovely to see the range of

projects brought in, from tipis to totem

poles and dream catchers.

Well done to Tatton who lead the way at the half-term break and are halfway to getting the red ribbons on the trophy at Christmas

As we neared the half term break, the House Cup activities were in full flow, starting with the Year3/4 Speedy Dictionary Challenge. Anderton were our early leaders thanks to some fast work fromBobby Mellor and Jessica Halas. Jodrell then mounted a comeback and went toe to toe withAnderton, levelling the score at 5 games each with one to play. Skyla Roberts, Melody Morganand Logan Cunningham were fantastic in their comeback and it was Melody who found the word'purple' in the final game to win the 4pts for JODRELL. Anderton scored 3pts, ahead of Tatton (2pts)and Delamere(1pt). Well done to the winning Jodrell team: Melody Morgan, Skyla Roberts, AmeliaHughes, Landon Ball and Logan Cunningham.

Year 6 their unit on Football with a House Football Challenge which involved different eventstesting their dribbling, running with the ball, passing and shooting skills. The children really enjoyedthe competition and it was played out in the correct spirit - lots of bonus points were given forgood sportsmanship! We ended up with joint winners, with JODRELL and TATTON both scoring 16ptson the day, ahead of Anderton 13pts and Delamere 7pts. Well done to all of Year 6 and especiallyto those in Jodrell and Tatton.

The Y5/6 Dodgeball League took place during the last week, starting with Tatton and Jodrellplaying out an absolute thriller! Tatton took the lead with a strong performance until Jodrellstormed back to lead 2-1 thanks to some outstanding play from Adam Wright and GracjanMarcinkowski. Tatton levelled the match with Ashton Degnen and Bartosz Babula making somestunning catches, to set up a winner-takes-all final game in the best of 5. The final game, as goodas the previous four, ended with a victorious JODRELL, with Lucas Jones throwing the winning shot.Well done to both teams but a special well done to Jodrell: Caitlyn Johnson, Lucas Jones, AdamWright, Denzel Lisboa, Evan Weedall and Gracjan.

Anderton faced Delamere and it was Delamere who started on fire with a 6-2 win in game one.Anderton upped their game and took the next two games thanks to some awesome catchingskills from Natan Skorek and Matthew Thompson and some fierce throwing. Anderton took the 4th

game with style (5-0) to rack a 3-1 overall win. Well done the winning ANDERTON team: MatthewThompson, Carly Taylor, Natan Skorek, Lewis Plant, Leo Jones and Aaliyah Wilkinson.

HOUSE CUP
