APP INFO
AfterHours is a task manager for overtime shifts, available in the iTunes store now and being used
by RMOs several Sydney Hospitals.
The Problem: On busy overtime shifts it is often hard to keep track of the dozens of jobs required
of you, as well remember to check up on specific patients later. Currently most RMOs scrawl notes
on pieces of paper that get lost, threatening patient safety as well as leading to poor handover.
AfterHours solves this by offering a solution to track jobs, set reminders and ease clinical handover.

APP REVIEW
Simple, efficient layout.
Tabs allow quick access to wards, your handover list, and Program Settings.
Menu-driven layout for sub-menus. Most common jobs are available on first
submenu. Jobs not included by default can be easily added and are
remembered for the future.
Easy colour coding for job urgency, and satisfying ‘tick’ for completed tasks

2. Current methods for tracking jobs on busy overtime shifts, where junior
doctors may cover 4 or 5 wards with upwards of 100 patients, are flawed.
The predominant system is paper and pagers, neither one of which has the
ability to set reminders or easily track progress as a patient’s condition
deteriorates or improves over the course of a 14 hour shift.
By removing paper, AfterHours improves Handover and patient safety
APP REVIEW
Clinical Handover has been identified as an area of weakness in Australian hospitals,
imperilling patient Safety, and has been targeted by a number of programs –
The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare: Clinical
Handover Link
Clinical Excellence Commission: Standard 6.2: Patient Clinical Handover
Clinician Productivity must improve if Health outcomes are going to be maintained
and improved into the future: Health Workforce Productivity Commission Report
EVIDENCE
BASE
Provide literature

that give the
rationale for your
app
Being developed by a Junior Doctor means it solves a problem the designer
understands intimately
AfterHours works to improve Junior Doctor Productivity, whilst at the same time
improving clinical handover and increasing patient safety. It is free to use and
available now on the iTunes Store.

APP REVIEW
- There is no current solution that is designed for Australian Hospital working
environments
- There is a growing and urgent requirement from statutory bodies to improve
clinical handover
- An effective way to improve patient safety, improve clinician productivity
INNOVATION

APP REVIEW
As can be seen below, There are very few ‘pages’ to the app,
minimising confusion. At all times a tab menu is present on the
bottom, providing ‘escape’ should it be necessary.
Thankfully, the target users of this app also generally have a high
degree of technical capability, being products of the information age
and navigating complicated hospital eMR systems daily!
USABILITY
What is the ease of
use of your app and
how does it
accommodate your
target audience?
