Dear Doyle Families, Welcome to 2016! Your PTA is proud to have started the school year with some fantastic events, including our largest ever attended PTA Meeting in September; the always amazing "Wheels of Freestyle" BMX assembly during Red Ribbon Week in October; and several successful fundraising events. With your support attending Doyle Dinner Night Outs at our local restaurants and your purchases from our Square One Art Fundraiser the PTA has received sizable donations. THANK YOU! 2016 will be filled with even more fun! We have monthly Dinner Night Outs planned, our Jog-A-Thon in the spring, and a new fantastic program, School Smarts, is coming to Doyle soon! This program has been wonderfully successful on other campus and the PTA is very excited with the help of Doyle Elementary School and our SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Martin to be able to offer this empowering and engaging program to families at no cost to participants. Be on the look out for Flyers coming home soon announcing an event on campus to introduce you to the School Smarts program. Thank you all again for supporting your Doyle Elementary PTA. We look forward to working together to make 2016 a wonderful year! JAN 2016 1

Letter from our Principal

At dismissal, a student was almost hit by a car as

she crossed the street. This is a reminder to please

slow down and stay alert when driving in the traffic

circle and when crossing the street. Make sure that

your children wait to walk with you through the

crosswalk. We know that the traffic situation is

challenging. By working together, we can help all

students safely arrive and depart from school.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Moore

Principal

California‘s economy increasingly relies on highly educated workers—and the K-12

public education system can lay the foundation for successful preparation before students

enter the workforce or pursue a postsecondary education.

To meet future economic demand, the state needs to more robustly invest in the public

education system. California currently ranks 46th in the nation in per-pupil funding.

What will it take to move the state to a robust investment level to prepare students

to continue to compete in the 21st century global economy,

and solve the state‘s future challenges?

Join the San Diego Unified School District, the San Diego Unified Council of Parent

Teacher Association (PTA) and the United Way of San Diego for a countywide discussion

with parents, community and business leaders on why supporting public schools matters

for society and the economy. Superintendent Cindy Marten will provide welcoming

remarks to highlight key district initiatives that hold promise in closing the opportunity

gap with additional investments in the classroom.

United Way of San Diego will moderate the panel discussion and Questions and Answers:

Andrea Guerrero, Executive Director, Alliance San Diego

Clare Crawford, President and Executive Director, Center for Policy Initiatives

Ed Hidalgo, Senior Director of Staffing, Qualcomm

Mark Cafferty, President and CEO, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp.

Gregg Robinson, President, San Diego County Board of Education

Celeste Bobryk-Ozaki, President, San Diego Unified Council of PTAs

It‘s a Jolly Holiday with Mary!

On Monday October 26th we

surprised Mrs. Mary Taylor with

a celebration send off before she

started as the new Interim-

Principal at Birdrock Elementary.

She was showered by every class

from TK-5th with cards, gifts, and

an amazing performance of “It’s

a Jolly Holiday with Mary” that

Mrs. Yamamoto’s 4th graders

performed including some

sounds from the brass band.

The purpose of the nominating committee is to recognize and seek

qualified nominees for the elected leadership of the PTA.

The members of the committee have a tremendous influence

on the future of the PTA.

Nominating committee members should have a broad acquaintance

with the membership and an understanding of the organization‘s

functions and its purposes. The committee should include both

experienced leadership as well as newer members. The nominating

committee members will be given all the materials and support

they need to ensure their success in their search for

new leaders for the 2016-2017 Board.

The elected positions the PTA members will vote in the Spring to fill are:

CALIFORNIA STATE PTA RESPONDS TO

GOVERNOR‘S 2016-2017 BUDGET PROPOSAL

January 8, 2016

Director of Communications and Strategic Initiatives, [email protected]

Insights on Behalf of the State‘s Largest Child-Advocacy Association

Budget Summary SACRAMENTO – Gov. Jerry Brown released his 2016 – 2017

budget proposal Jan. 7, 2016. California State PTA President Justine Fischer offered

insights on behalf of the state‘s largest child-advocacy organization:

―The governor‘s proposed budget increases per-pupil funding and corrects many

historical fiscal inequities that hurt public education during years of deficit spending.

Increasing funding by $368 per pupil and meeting 95 percent of the Local Control

Funding Formula (LCFF) commitment demonstrates a sound investment in the

children of our state. The governor‘s proposal is an excellent start for discussions with

the Legislature, particularly regarding early childhood learning, school facilities and a

long-term vision for state and local accountability.

―Included in the governor‘s proposal is $1.25 billion in one-time funds. We believe

these funds can be effectively used to ensure that LCFF and the tenet of ‗subsidiarity‘

will be successful by investing in family, parent and student engagement.

―California State PTA has been speaking with the Governor‘s Office during the past

months about the importance of specific one-time funding for family engagement – the

number-one predictor of student success. The governor‘s proposed budget does not

currently include dedicated funding to support meaningful parent and family

engagement in schools.

―A vital premise of the new Local Control Funding Formula is that decisions about

student success are best made by those closest to the classroom. But simply adding a

requirement for more parent and family engagement is not enough. There are no

shortcuts to raising student achievement or to successful parent engagement. It takes

an investment of time and resources, especially to reach parents from all school sites,

backgrounds and in all languages.

―This window of opportunity is short, and this is the year to support and strengthen

what is now in state law – engaging parents and families. We want LCFF to succeed.

From our California State PTA

9

―We look forward to continuing our conversation with

the governor, the Legislature and other stakeholders on the

importance of parent and family engagement in the months

ahead.‖
