Powering microwavesystems into the future

The Electron Devices Division of L-3 Communications

(L-3 EDD) is a leader in the development and

production of state-of-the-art microwave

vacuum electron devices.

Military CapabilitiesL-3 Electron Devices offers a complete line ofproducts used in a variety of microwave andmillimeter wave systems. These productsmeet and exceed the stringent requirementsfor operation and durability in today'sadvanced radar, ECM, missile andcommunication systems.

L-3 EDD products used in military applicationsinclude:

• Helix Traveling Wave Tubes (TWTs) — missile data links and seekers, ECM systemsand medium-range radars

• Coupled Cavity TWTs — airborne radarand ground-based radar systems

• Crossed-Field Amplifiers (CFAs) —shipboard radars

• Klystrons — long-range radars

• Microwave Power Modules (MPMs) —airborne satcom systems

L-3 EDD has significantly reduced the size ofamplifiers by the introduction of microwaveand millimeter wave power modules (MPMs

and MMPMs). In these new system buildingblocks, low noise and high efficiency areachieved by integrating miniature powerbooster TWTs, high gain solid state amplifiersand electronic power conditioners.

Commercial CapabilitiesL-3 EDD products are not limited to militaryapplications — many are utilized in morefamiliar commercial systems, including:

• Klystrons — airport surveillance andweather radar and linear accelerators usedin medical and scientific systems

• Inductive Output Tubes (IOTs) — UHF TVtransmitters

• TWTs — wireless communication systems

• X-ray tubes — nondestructive testing andsterilization systems

With a proud heritage of producingmicrowave devices for over 70 years, L-3Electron Devices continues to design anddevelop products that will be used to powerfuture military and commercial systems.

Coupled Cavity Traveling Wave TubesPrimarily used in ground-based or air-

borne radar applications, L-3 EDD’scoupled cavity Traveling WaveTubes (TWTs) are available atpower levels up to 150 KW peak,5 KW of average power and 10%

bandwidth in C-, X- and Ku-bands. Our tubes havefound use in a wide variety of radar systems, both in theU.S. and abroad.

Helix Traveling Wave TubesL-3 EDD is widely recognized asan industry leader in thedesign and manufactureof high-power pulsedand CW helix and ring-loop TWTs for radar, ECM andmissile applications. These TWTs operate in the stan-dard bands over the 2 to 18 GHz frequency spectrumand provide superior performance and reliability. L-3Electron Devices is a tube supplier for ECM systems, shipboard helicopter radar and missile systems. TheWilliamsport operation manufactures a line of ring bartubes in UHF and L-band with output powers up to 200KW. These are used in long-range array, space surveil-lance, shipboard surveillance and airport surveillanceradars.

Miniature Traveling Wave TubesL-3 EDD has a complete line of minitubes, covering multi-octave bandwidths

over the frequency range of 2 to 46 GHz, withoutput powers of up to 150 Watts. The tubes havemulti-stage collectors for high efficiency, are of ruggedthermal design and offer long life through superior gunoptics and beam magnetics. Our mini tubes are used inECM systems for the U.S. Navy and foreign navies andare also used in airborne decoy systems. A special lineof low gain, high efficiency vacuum power booster(VPB) tubes was developed for use in our line ofMicrowave Power Modules (MPMs).

Microwave Power ModulesThe MPM is a recent advancementin medium-power microwaveamplifiers. The MPM is a com-plete microwave amplifier thatincludes a miniature TWT, a solid state

driver amplifier (SSA) and a high density electronicpower conditioner (EPC). All three components arehoused in a small, compact, lightweight package.Compared to traditional TWT amplifiers, the MPM is sig-nificantly smaller, lighter and more efficient and has agreater signal-to-noise ratio. Both military and com-mercial versions are available.

Power SuppliesL-3 EDD’s ISO 9001:2000San Carlos facility has builtcustom military high-voltageTWT power supplies and specializedelectronic subsystems for over 40 years.High-voltage, low noise, high-power densitypower supplies are available for CW or pulse applica-tions with our line of helix and ring-loop TWTs and aredesigned with full automatic protection. Our powersupplies and subsystems are used in surveillance radar, shipboard helicopter radar and helicopter ECM systems.

High-Power KlystronsSince the development of the first 2.2 megawattL-band klystron in 1952, Electron Devices hasbeen a leader in support of the superpowerradar community. Today, state-of-the-art ClusterCavity™ klystrons provide the wideband multi-megawatt capability for the U.S. airborne warningsystem. Other megawatt klystrons are used inweather radar, medical radiation therapy and high-energy plasma research applications.

Accelerator DevicesL-3 EDD offers FDA-certified medical klystrons as replacement parts for medicalaccelerators. These klystrons have frequen-cies ranging from 2.856 to 2.990 GHz, peakpower output levels of up to 6 megawattsand gains of up to 50 dB. Focusing is con-trolled by electromagnet, cooling is achievedthrough liquid and tuning is preset to a cus-tomer-desired frequency. Both new andrebuilt klystrons are available. We also offerhigh-energy electron guns for use in medicaland research accelerator systems.

In 1932, Charles Litton started a small microwave tube operation in San Carlos, CA. as the Electron Devices Division of Litton Industries. In the mid-sixties, Electron DevicPA.
