Three-‐Part Model Pediatrician Guidance
In the pediatric exam room, pediatricians speak to parents
about the importance of reading aloud to their children every day, and offer age-‐appropriate literacy
Ips and encouragement.
Prescribe a Book
At each regular checkup from 6 months through 5
years of age, the child receives a new, culturally-‐ and
developmentally-‐appropriate book to take home and keep.

Evidence-‐Based, Research-‐Tested FiSeen published, peer-‐reviewed research studies support the efficacy of our model, a more extensive body of research than for any other psychosocial intervenIon in general pediatrics.

Our History • Care Ring is the implemenIng agency for Nurse-‐family Partnership in Mecklenburg County
• Agency was the incubator for ROR in Mecklenburg County prior to NFP being implemented and key in ROR being established in several doctors’ office
• In 2011, ROR approached Care Ring about re-‐insItuIng the program at Care Ring as an adjunct to our NFP program

Common Goals • Reach Out and Read, like Nurse-‐Family Partnership, is an evidence-‐based model that targets impoverished families.
• Both program focus on improving child development by fostering posiIve interacIons between child and caregiver (namely reading!)
• Fundamental research in both programs support reading aloud as a key acIvity to promote language development

Common Goals By partnering with the Reach Out and Read (ROR) program, Care Ring Nurse-‐Family Partnership assists mothers in taking an acIve role in preparing their children to succeed in school. We do so by educaIng families on the importance of reading to their children, providing our families books and by encouraging families to read together.
Partnership in PracAce Obvious Fit • Books are provided at consistent intervals: – Birth of infant – At compleIon of infant health assessments (6, 12, 18, and 24 months)
• AnIcipatory guidance related to the developmental milestones of early literacy is provided when books are issued. – Nurse home visitors
