SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

PRE-CONFERENCE SESSION WW e d n e s d a y , M a r c h 1 , 1 1 a m−3 p m (Lunch provided) Compressed earth blocks: a proven alternative construction material

LOCATION: EXPO PRESENTED BY: DAN JOHNSON AND DAVID ROMARY, DRIFTLESS HOMEWRIGHTS CREDITS: AIA 3.75 LUS, BPI 3.75 CEUS, DSPS 3.5 CEUS TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, 3.5 CEUS TOWARDS UDC-CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION, GBCI 3.5 CE HOURS, IACET 0.4 CEU, NAHB, NARI 3.75 CEUS

With examples stretching back to ancient times, masonry walls are the most durable and time tested of all wall systems. In this pre-conference session, traditional masonry is partnered with modern energy efficient construction practices to reveal a high performance wall made from compressed earth blocks. Hydraulically pressed from locally available clay soils, CEBs are minimally processed sustainable masonry units that can be incorporated into solid and veneer wall designs. How are they made, mortared, insulated, air-sealed, finished and used in passive solar design? Help us build a wall during this session and find out. (Separate registration fee required to attend.)

GENERAL SESSION T h u r s d a y , M a r c h 3 , 8 : 3 0−1 0 a m (Doors open at 8 am) Taking B4 to heart and to task: how do we build better buildings and businesses?

LOCATION: BALLROOM A/H PRESENTED BY: PETER YOST, BUILDINGGREEN, INC. CREDITS: N/A There are two very different ways to assess our work in the home building industry—evaluate statistics or look in the mirror. During his keynote address our unconventional speaker, Peter Yost, will do both. He’ll get to the heart of these questions and more: How do YOU think we can build better buildings and businesses? From a national perspective, what is the data telling us about building better buildings and businesses? And, what does all of this mean for you? Does the thought of speaking in front of a group make you squirm? That’s fine. Peter will request your participation during his keynote, but you’ll be able to do so virtually. That’s right, just grab your smartphone and head to the general session—no speaking required (unless you REALLY want to). SPONSORED BY XCEL ENERGY Also featured during the general session

Energy efficient lighting and the human response

LOCATION: WISTERIA PRESENTED BY: TAMARA SONDGEROTH, MIDWEST LIGHTING INSTITUTE CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU/HSWS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

New energy-saving lighting technologies (LEDs) are certainly here to stay. However, few people really understand how to best use these new technologies to minimize energy use while eliciting positive reactions from occupants. We are used to thinking about the brightness of light, but only recently have we even begun to talk about the color of the light. Midwest Lighting Institute is studying the practical installation of lighting and measuring the human response. Our studies are helping us learn how to increase attention spans and reduce stress, factors that should come to play inside of our homes. SPONSORED BY WPPI ENERGY

Understanding the value of your business

LOCATION: MANGROVE PRESENTED BY: PAUL OUWENEEL, WIPFLI LLP CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LUS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

It is essential for owners of closely held businesses to understand the value of their company, current and projected, in order to make informed financial decisions. Regrettably, many owners do not pay attention to the value of their company until it's time to sell or transfer their ownership interest, which is often too late and can lead to a poor outcome. In this session, we will talk about how potential buyers value companies and help business owners understand what constitutes value in the marketplace.

Water management: getting the details right

LOCATION: TAMBOTI/ALOESWOOD PRESENTED BY: STEVEN BACZEK, STEVEN BACZEK ARCHITECT CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU/HSWS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, 1 CEU TOWARDS UDC-CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

We will scrutinize the major concepts of water management from the building's footing through the roof, describing how materials and components of a successful water management system interrelate and rely on each other. In addition to looking at water management systems, we will discuss the level of risk in water management decisions. All of the details of a system are not alike and understanding the level of risk for each part of the system will help define the level of water management required. MASTER SPEAKER

Mastering Passive House assemblies

LOCATION: ARALIA/MARULA PRESENTED BY: JASON LA FLEUR, ECO ACHIEVERS AND BRANDON WEISS, EVOLUTIONARY HOME BUILDERS CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LUS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, 1 CEU TOWARDS UDC-CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS

Learn from a builder and rater who have constructed and tested many different Passive House assemblies, including insulated concrete forms, wood framed and one meeting Living Building Certification standards. This will be a practical discussion for builders who want to learn what works and what doesn't; and find out what it takes to meet the aggressive performance standards of Passive House. We will explore and provide data from six different Passive Houses all constructed with different assemblies in the Chicago metro area and discuss challenges and lessons learned. Case studies include five single family homes and one multifamily building.

Not an HVAC pro? What residential building pros and homeowners need to know

LOCATION: CYPRESS PRESENTED BY: SCOTT PIGG, SEVENTHWAVE CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU/HSWS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, 1 CEU TOWARDS UDC-HVAC INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS, NATE 1.25 CEHS

This session is meant to help builders, remodelers and homeowners better understand the key choices among furnaces, air conditioners and air-source heat pumps—and to get top performance out of this equipment. Did you know that more than 80 percent of central air conditioners are installed improperly and do not achieve their rated efficiency? We'll cover what matters—and what doesn't—for maximizing comfort and minimizing heating and cooling bills. Based on independent monitoring and testing of hundreds of systems in Minnesota and Wisconsin, this will be a lively and practical session using an interactive audience polling system: test your knowledge and bring your questions!

Stop building to code and save money

LOCATION: GUAVA/TAMARIND PRESENTED BY: STEVE ROMME, EFREE ADVISORS, LLC CREDITS: AIA 1.25 LU/HSWS, ASHI 1 CE CREDIT, BPI 1.25 CEUS, DSPS 1 CEU TOWARDS DWELLING CONTRACTOR QUALIFIER CERTIFICATION, GBCI 1 CE HOUR, IACET 0.1 CEU, NAHB, NARI 1.25 CEUS, NATE 1.25 CEHS, RESNET 1.25 CEUS

Recent code changes have increased the required prescriptive efficiency for new homes to levels that sometimes don't make economic sense, but there is a better approach. By using alternative code compliance methods and optimization software, builders can find the perfect recipe for each new home and deliver projects that are more energy efficient than code for less money. Builders can analyze each energy efficient upgrade, but only select the ones that

Distinguishing your website from the competition will drive traffic to your site and produce leads that you can convert into customers. The two most important ways to do this are by increasing traffic to your site and optimizing for conversion. Join this session for a discussion on high-quality lead generation.

Just like an electrician or plumber, certified lead-safe renovators and asbestos abatement contractors are specialists with skills to do the work correctly and safely. What kind of encouragement do contractors need to acquire these special skills? Discussion questions: Who is renovating the right way and who isn't? What can state asbestos and lead inspectors do to help you? When do you involve the specialists? Why is compliance with regulations so important? How do you market your company and prove to your customers that your bid for lead-safe work is best for them? Get answers!

More than 40% of Midwest homes use delivered fuels or electricity as their primary space heating fuel. During periods of high demand, fuel cost and availability can force some homeowners to drastically reduce the temperature in their homes. Cold-climate air source heat pumps are an ideal candidate for these homes. Recent changes to ASHPs allow heat to be transferred into homes from temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Six high efficiency cold-climate ASHPs were installed with detailed data monitoring equipment to assess the improved capacity, reduction in electricity use and reduction in reliance on back-up heating.

Most contractors use the best guess approach to estimating, then fail to verify how the actual bills came in compared to the estimate. Estimating is a game of exact guessing that must be mastered in order to have a business that runs smoothly and then that estimate must be compared to the actual bills line by line. The true goal of estimating is to predict each bill that you will receive for each job. Job and labor categories, accurate scope of work for each trade translates into a lower price to the customer and more money for the company.
