Power Steering PumpReplacement Procedures

Power Steering Pump Replacement… Skipping steps costs youtime and trouble later. Use the correct tools and procedures!

Critical Steps

Always follow authorized service procedures for the specific vehicle. Thesesteps are particularly essential to fix it right the first time reliability:

Strong Evidence

Extensive Warranty Analysis hasshown these significant root causes torepeat power steering pump failures:

1. Flush and bleed the system using the properspecial tools. Any residual contaminants willresult in pump failure… It’s just a matter oftime.

Low or no pressure from the power steering pump maybe the result of dirty or contaminated fluid. This willcause the relief valve to stop functioning.

• Improper pulley installation• Re-using the old O-rings• Use of fluid other than the

OE-specified steering fluid• Failure to flush the system

2. Remove the pulley using the properspecial tool. Distorting the pulley maydamage bearings on the new pump.Pulley alignment is crucial.

3. Use the new O-rings included with thepump.

The new reservoir O-ring must be lubricatedOE-specific Power Steering Fluid prior toinstallation.

Lubricate the controlvalve O-ring prior toinstallation as well.Ensure the O-ring isin its exact grooveposition and NOTcovering thepressure bypasshole.

5. Use only the recommended Power Steering Fluid:

Just because some brake fluids and transmission fluidsare red, does NOT mean they are compatible with thesteering system and pump components.

Follow these procedures to ensure the replaced power steeringpump operates properly for many years… and miles… to come!

4. Properly install the pulley onto the newpump‘s drive shaft. Installation tools areincluded with each replacement pump.

An authorized special service tool or equivalentis also available. Proper pulley installation andalignment are essential for engineered pumplife.

Service tools exist to ensure exact pulleyalignment. The Gates DriveAlign™ LaserAlignment Tool can be used on the entireaccessory drive system. This laser tool quicklymounts to each drive pulley to check the onenext to it. Any out-of-round, distortion and/ormisalignment are readily apparent so correctionor replacement can be performed.
