What are fractions?

A fraction is a way to describe a part of a whole or a part of a group by using equal parts. It is made up of two parts.

The denominator tells how The numerator tells how many equal parts are in many of those equal partsthe whole. 3 The fraction stands for.

What is a Unit Fraction?

A unit fraction has 1 as its numerator. ½, 1/3, ¼, and 1/5 are all unit fractions.

When you divide something into more and more equal parts, the size of each part gets smaller, but the denominator of the fraction gets larger.

Equivalent fractions name the same amount.

                       What are Equivalent Fractions?

Equivalent Fractions are fractions that have the same value. 2/3, 4/6, and 10/15 are equivalent fractions. See the fraction strips below.

How do We Compare and Order our Fractions?

You can compare fractions with like denominators.

i.e. 3/8 < 5/8 < 7/8

You can compare fractions with unlike denominators.

i.e. 5/8 < 8/12

How Can You Order fractions?

Once you know how to compare two fractions, you also know how to order a group of fractions.

Find fractions with like denominators

Compare the numerators

Multiples of 4: 4,8,12,16,20,...Multiples of 5: 5,10,15,20,…Multiples of 10: 10,20,…20 is the least common denominator.1/10 = 2/20; ¼ = 5/20; 2/5=8/20

8 > 5 > 28/20 > 5/20 > 2/20 , so

2/5 > ¼ > 1/10.

1/10 is less than ¼ or 2/5

Standards5.N.4 Create equivalent fractions, given a fraction.

5.N.5 Compare and order fractions including unlike denominators (with and without the use of a number line) Note: Commonly used fractions such as those that might be indicated on a ruler, measuring cup, etc.

5.N.9 Compare fractions using <, >, and =

COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS (new)

4.NF.2 Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as ½. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

WHAT’S NEXT WITH FRACTIONS?

•Students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators.

To add: If fractions have like denominators, add the numerators to get a new numerator. Usethe same denominator.

3/8 + 3/8 = 6/8

To add: If fractions have unlike denominators, rewrite them with like denominators. ½ + ¼ = ?

½ x 2/2 = 2/4 2/4 + ¼ = ¾

When subtracting fractions you follow the same directions as addition.
