The following instructions have been adapted from theANSIOPEI standard B713-1995 and the ISO 84371989standard

Trainingbull Read the operatorrsquos manual carefully Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the proper use of theequipment Know how to stop the unit and disengagethe controls quickly

bull Never allow children to operate the snowthrowerNever allow adults to operate the snowthrower withoutproper instruction

bull Keep the area of operation clear of all persons(particularly small children) and pets

bull Exercise caution to avoid slipping or falling especiallywhen operating the snowthrower in reverse

Preparationbull Thoroughly inspect the area where you will use thesnowthrower Remove all doormats sleds boardswires and other foreign objects

bull Before starting the engine disengage all clutches Shiftthe snowthrower into neutral as well if applicable

bull Do not operate the snowthrower without wearingadequate winter garments Wear footwear that willimprove your footing on slippery surfaces

bull Handle fuel with care it is highly flammablendash Use an approved fuel containerndash Never add fuel to a running or hot enginendash Fill the fuel tank outdoors with extreme care Neverfill the fuel tank indoors

ndash Replace the fuel tank cap securely and wipe up anyspilled fuel

bull Use only the power cord supplied with the snowthrowerand a receptacle appropriate for use with the powercord for electric-start motors

bull Adjust the auger housing height to clear a gravel orcrushed-rock surface

bull Never attempt to make any adjustments while the engineis running except where specifically recommended byToro

bull Let the engine and the snowthrower adjust to theoutdoor temperature before starting to clear snow

bull Operating any powered machine can result in foreignobjects being thrown into the eyes Always wear safetyglasses or eye shields while operating adjusting orrepairing the snowthrower

Operationbull Do not put your hands or feet near or under rotatingparts Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times

bull Exercise extreme caution when crossing gravel driveswalks or roads Stay alert for hidden hazards or traffic

bull After striking a foreign object stop the enginedisconnect the wire from the spark plug thoroughlyinspect the snowthrower for any damage and repair thedamage before operating the snowthrower

bull If the unit should start to vibrate abnormally stop theengine and check immediately for the cause Vibrationis generally a warning of trouble

bull Stop the engine whenever you leave the operatingposition before unclogging the augerimpeller housingor discharge chute and when making any repairsadjustments or inspections

bull When cleaning repairing or inspecting make certainthat the augerimpeller and all moving parts havestopped Disconnect the spark plug wire and keep thewire away from the spark plug to prevent someonefrom accidentally starting the engine

bull Do not run the engine indoors except when startingit and for moving the snowthrower in or out of thebuilding Open the outside doors exhaust fumes aredangerous

bull Do not clear snow across the face of slopes Exerciseextreme caution when changing direction on slopes Donot attempt to clear steep slopes

bull Never operate the snowthrower without proper guardsor other safety devices in place

bull Never operate the snowthrower near glass enclosuresautomobiles window wells and drop-offs withoutproperly adjusting the snow discharge angle Keepchildren and pets away

bull Do not overload the machine capacity by attempting toclear snow at too fast a rate

bull Look behind and use care when backing up with thesnowthrower

bull Never direct the discharge at bystanders or allow anyonein front of the unit

bull Disengage the power to the augerimpeller when thesnowthrower is being transported or when not in use

bull Use only attachments and accessories approved byToro such as wheel weights counterweights and cabs(Contact an Authorized Service Dealer for accessoriesavailable for your snowthrower)

bull Never operate the snowthrower without good visibilityor light Always be sure of your footing and keep a firmhold on the handle Walk never run

Maintenance and Storagebull Check all fasteners at frequent intervals for propertightness to be sure that the equipment is in safeworking condition

bull Never store the machine with fuel in the fuel tank insidea building where ignition sources are present such ashot water and space heaters and clothes dryers Allowthe engine to cool before storing in any enclosure

bull Always refer to this operatorrsquos manual for importantdetails if the snowthrower is to be stored for anextended period

bull Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels whennecessary

Toro Snowthrower SafetyThe following list contains safety information specific toToro products or other safety information that you mustknowbull Rotating augerimpeller can cut off or injurefingers or hands Stay behind the handles andaway from the discharge opening while operating thesnowthrower Keep your face hands feet and anyother part of your body or clothing away frommoving or rotating parts

bull Before adjusting cleaning inspecting troubleshootingor repairing the snowthrower stop the engine removethe key and wait for all moving parts to stopDisconnect the wire from the spark plug and keepit away from the spark plug to prevent someonefrom accidentally starting the engine

bull To unclog the discharge chute stay in the operatingposition and release the left hand (traction) lever Whilerunning the augerimpeller push down on the handlesto raise the front of the snowthrower a few inches(centimeters) off the pavement Then lift the handlesquickly to bump the front of the snowthrower on thepavement Repeat if necessary until a stream of snowcomes out the discharge chute

bull If you cannot unclog the discharge chute by bumpingthe front of the snowthrower stop the engine waitfor all moving parts to stop and use a stick neveruse your hand

bull Do not wear loose-fitting clothing that could get caughtin moving parts

bull If a shield safety device or decal is damaged illegibleor lost repair or replace it before beginning operation

bull Do not smoke while handling gasolinebull Do not touch the engine while it is running or soonafter it has stopped because the engine may be hotenough to cause a burn

bull When storing the snowthrower for more than 30 daysdrain the fuel from the fuel tank to prevent a potentialhazard Store fuel in an approved fuel containerRemove the key from the ignition switch before storingthe snowthrower

1 Installing the Upper HandleNote Do not remove the rubber band until you haveinstalled the upper handle

1 Lift and rotate the upper handle and position it overthe lower handle (Figure 3)

Important Route the cables attached to theQuick Stick inside the upper handle legs andensure that the cables and the wire for the headlightare not pinched between the handle sections

2 Route either the left or right cable end over the lowerhandle and insert the cable end into the hole in thecorresponding wheel clutch lever (Figure 6)

3 Remove the nut and washer from the handle attachthe cable clamp on the cable to the handle and handtighten the nut (Figure 7)

Important Ensure that the curved side of thecable clamp is against the handle and that the cableis routed below the clamp bolt The cable must bein a straight line from the cable clamp to the pointwhere it attaches to the wheel clutch lever

4 Pull the cable jacket down gently until the wheel clutchlever is down and the slack is out of the cable thentighten the cable clamp nut securely (Figure 8)

5 Squeeze the lever fully then check the gap betweenthe bottom of the handle and the wheel clutch leverend (Figure 9)

Note The gap should be approximately the thicknessof a pencil (14 inch or 6 mm) If it is greater loosenthe cable clamp nut slide the cable jacket up slightlytighten the cable clamp nut and check the gap again

6 Repeat steps 2 through 5 for the other cable

3 Installing the TractionControl Linkage1 Remove the hairpin cotter and washer from the lower

end of the speed control rod and insert the lower endof the rod into the lower link arm so that the bent endof the speed control rod faces rearward (Figure 10)

2 Secure the lower end of the speed control rod with thewasher and hairpin cotter that you previously removed

3 Remove the hairpin cotter and the outer washer fromthe trunnion on the upper end of the speed control rod(Figure 11)

4 Shift the speed selector lever into Position R2

5 Rotate the lower link arm fully upward(counterclockwise) (Figure 12)

6 Lift up on the speed control rod and insert the trunnioninto the hole in the speed selector lever (Figure 11)

Note If the trunnion does not fit into the hole whenyou lift up on the speed control rod rotate the trunnionupward or downward on the speed control rod untilit fits

7 Secure the trunnion and upper end of the speed controlrod with the outer washer and a hairpin cotter youpreviously removed

4 Installing the Chute ControlRod1 Unwrap the Quick Stick and rotate it so that it is upright

and in the center

2 Hold the blue trigger cap down and pull the lever fullyrearward

Note The discharge chute and deflector should faceforward If they do not hold the blue trigger capdown (but do not move the Quick Stick) and rotate thedischarge chute until they do

3 Align the flattened back end of the long chute controlrod with the flattened front end of the short rodthat extends from the control panel so that they nesttogether (Figure 14)

4 Insert the front end of the rod into the opening in theback of the chute gear cover until it slides into the chutegear (Figure 15)

5 Align the holes in the nested ends of the rods and insert2 carriage bolts (in the loose parts bag) through theshort rod from the left side of the snowthrower (fromthe operating position)

6 Insert the cable clip that supports the deflector cableonto the forward carriage bolt and secure the carriagebolts with locknuts from the loose parts bag (Figure 16)

7 Hold the blue trigger cap down and rotate the QuickStick in a circle to ensure that the chute and deflectoroperate smoothly

5 Connecting the Wire to theHeadlight1 Insert the wire connector on the loose end of the wire

straight into the back of the headlight until it is securelyin place (Figure 17)

2 Secure a cable tie (from the loose parts bag) around thewire and the handle about an inch (25 cm) below theU-bolt (Figure 17)

6 Filling the Engine with OilYour snowthrower comes with 26 oz of oil in the engine

Note Before starting the engine check the oil level andadd oil if necessary

Max fill 26 oz (077 l) type automotive detergent oil withan API service classification of SF SG SH SJ SL or higher

bull For temperatures above 32degF (0degC) use SAE 30W

bull For temperatures between 0degF and 32degF (-18degC to 0degC)use SAE 5W30 or SAE 10W

bull For air temperatures below 0degF (-18degC) use SAE 0W30

1 Remove the dipstick and slowly pour oil into the oilfill tube to raise the oil level to the Full mark on thedipstick Do not overfill(Figure 18)

Note Do not spill oil around the oil fill tube oil couldleak onto traction parts and cause the traction to slip

7 Checking the Tire PressureThe tires are overinflated at the factory for shipping Reducethe pressure equally in both tires to between 17 and 20 psi(116 and 137 kPa)

Filling the Fuel Tank

Gasoline is extremely flammable and explosive Afire or explosion from gasoline can burn you andothersbull To prevent a static charge from igniting thegasoline place the container andor snowthroweron the ground before filling not in a vehicle oron an object

bull Fill the tank outdoors when the engine is coldWipe up spills

bull Do not handle gasoline when smoking or aroundan open flame or sparks

bull Store gasoline in an approved fuel container outof the reach of children

Fill the fuel tank with fresh unleaded regular gasoline froma major name-brand service station (Figure 23)

Important To reduce starting problems add fuelstabilizer to the fuel all season mixing it with gasolineless than 30 days old Do not add oil to the gasoline

Important To prevent damaging the electricstarter run it no more than 10 times at intervalsof 5 seconds on then 5 seconds off If the enginedoes not start after this series of attempts allow thestarter to cool for at least 40 minutes before tryingto start it again If the engine still does not starttake the snowthrower to an Authorized ServiceDealer for service

8 Disconnect the cord from the electric starter and theoutlet

9 When the engine starts set the choke to the34 position As the engine warms up set the choketo the 12 position When the engine is warm set thechoke to the Off position

If you leave the snowthrower plugged into apower outlet someone can inadvertently startthe snowthrower and injure people or damageproperty

Unplug the power cord whenever you are notstarting the snowthrower

Stopping the Engine1 Move the throttle to the Stop position (Figure 31)

4 Pull the recoil starter 3 or 4 times This helps preventthe recoil starter from freezing up

Operating the Traction DriveImportant To operate the traction drive youmust operate the snowthrower with the self-propelfeature engaged Refer to Freewheeling or Using theSelf-propel Drive1 To engage the traction drive squeeze the left hand

(traction) lever to the handgrip (Figure 33)

2 To stop the traction drive release the traction lever

3 Check to ensure that the speed selector operatesproperly

bull If the snowthrower does not move or movesforward when it is in Position R1 remove thetrunnion from the speed selector lever turn thetrunnion downward (clockwise) on the speedcontrol rod then install the trunnion

bull If the snowthrower does not move or movesrearward when it is in Position 1 (forward) removethe trunnion from the speed selector lever turn thetrunnion upward (counterclockwise) on the speedcontrol rod then install the trunnion

Note If the snowthrower moves when thetraction lever is in the released position check thetraction cable (refer to Checking and Adjustingthe Traction Cable) or take the snowthrower to anAuthorized Service Dealer for service

Using the Wheel Clutch LeversThe wheel clutch levers allow you to momentarily disengagethe drive to one or both wheels with the traction drive leverstill engaged This enables you to turn and maneuver thesnowthrower easily

Note Holding down the traction lever against the handleengages the traction drive to both wheels

To turn the snowthrower to the right lift up on the rightwheel clutch lever and squeeze it toward the handle (Figure34)

Note This disengages the drive to the right wheel whilethe left wheel continues driving and the snowthrower turnsto the right

Note Similarly squeezing the left wheel clutch lever turnsthe snowthrower to the left

When you complete the turn release the wheel clutch leverand the drive re-engages both wheels (Figure 35)

Momentarily squeezing and releasing the left or right wheelclutch lever also allows for steering adjustments to keep thesnowthrower going in a straight line especially in deep snow

Squeezing both wheel clutch levers simultaneouslydisengages the drive to both wheels This enables youto manually move the snowthrower backward withoutstopping to shift it into a reverse gear It also allows you tomaneuver and transport the snowthrower more easily whenthe engine is not running

Operating the Speed SelectorThe speed selector has 6 forward and 2 reverse gears Tochange speeds release the traction lever and shift the speedselector lever to the desired position (Figure 36) The leverlocks in a notch at each speed selection

Operating the AugerImpellerDrive1 To engage the auger impeller drive squeeze the right

hand (auger impeller) lever to the handgrip (Figure 37)

Important When you engage both theaugerimpeller lever and the traction lever thetraction lever locks the augerimpeller lever downfreeing your right hand To release both leverssimply release the left hand (traction) lever

3 If the auger and impeller continue to rotate when yourelease the augerimpeller lever do not operate thesnowthrower Check the augerimpeller cable (refer toChecking and Adjusting the AugerImpeller Cable) andadjust it if necessary Otherwise take the snowthrowerto an Authorized Dealer for service

If the auger and impeller continue to rotate whenyou release the augerimpeller lever you couldseriously injure yourself or others

Do not operate the snowthrower Take it to anAuthorized Service Dealer for service

Operating the Quick SticktradeHold the blue trigger cap down to use the Quick Stick tomove the discharge chute and the chute deflector Releasethe trigger cap to lock the discharge chute and chutedeflector into position (Figure 38)

Hold the blue trigger cap down and move the Quick Stickto the left to move the discharge chute to the left movethe Quick Stick to the right to move the discharge chute tothe right (Figure 39)

bull If the chute does not turn as far to the left as it does tothe right ensure that the cable is routed to the inside ofthe handles Refer to Installing the Upper Handle

Moving the Chute Deflector

Hold the blue trigger cap down and move the Quick Stickforward to lower the chute deflector move it rearward toraise the chute deflector (Figure 40)

Unclogging the DischargeChuteIf the augerimpeller is running but there is no snowcoming out of the discharge chute the discharge chute maybe clogged



Important Unclogging the discharge chuteby bumping the front of the snowthrower on thepavement may cause the skids to move Adjust theskids and tighten the skid bolts securely

Preventing Freeze-upbull In snowy and cold conditions some controls andmoving parts may freeze Do not use excessive forcewhen trying to operate frozen controls If you havedifficulty operating any control or part start the engineand let it run for a few minutes

bull After using the snowthrower let the engine run fora few minutes to prevent moving parts from freezingEngage the augerimpeller to clear any remaining snowfrom inside the housing Rotate the Quick Stick toprevent it from freezing Stop the engine wait for allmoving parts to stop and remove all ice and snow fromthe snowthrower

bull With the engine off pull the recoil starter handle severaltimes to prevent the recoil starter from freezing up

Operating Tips

When the snowthrower is in operation the impellerand auger can rotate and cut off or injure hands andfeetbull Before adjusting cleaning inspectingtroubleshooting or repairing the snowthrowerstop the engine and wait for all moving partsto stop Disconnect the wire from the sparkplug and keep it away from the plug to preventsomeone from accidentally starting the engine

bull Remove an obstruction from the discharge chuterefer to Unclogging the Discharge Chute Ifnecessary use a stick not your hands to removean obstruction from the discharge chute

bull Stay behind the handles and away fromthe discharge opening while operating thesnowthrower

bull Keep face hands feet and any other part of yourbody or clothing away from concealed movingor rotating parts

The rotor blades can throw stones toys and otherforeign objects and cause serious personal injury tothe operator or to bystandersbull Keep the area to be cleared free of all objects thatthe rotor blades could pick up and throw

bull Keep all children and pets away from the areaof operation

bull Always set the throttle to the Fast position whenthrowing snow

bull If the engine slows down under a load or the wheelsslip shift the snowthrower into a lower gear

bull If the front of the snowthrower rides up shift thesnowthrower into a lower gear If the front continues toride up lift up on the handles

Preparing the Snowthrowerfor Storage1 On the last refueling of the year add fuel stabilizer to

fresh fuel as directed by the engine manufacturer2 Run the engine for 10 minutes to distribute the

conditioned fuel through the fuel system3 Loosen the hose clamp that secures the fuel line to the

valve and slide the fuel line off the fuel shutoff valve4 Open the fuel shutoff valve and allow the fuel to drain

out of the fuel tank into an approved fuel container5 Install the fuel line onto the fuel shutoff valve and

secure it with a hose clamp6 Run the snowthrower until the engine stops from

running out of fuel7 Prime the engine and start it again8 Allow the engine to run until it stops When you can no

longer start the engine it is sufficiently dry9 Stop the engine and allow it to cool10 Remove the ignition key11 Disconnect the spark plug wire12 Remove the spark plug add 1 oz (30 ml) of oil through

the spark plug hole and pull the starter rope slowlyseveral times to distribute oil throughout the cylinder toprevent cylinder corrosion during the off-season

13 Loosely install the spark plug14 Dispose of any unused fuel properly Recycle it

according to local codes or use it in your automobile

Note Do not store stabilized fuel for more than90 days

15 Clean the snowthrower thoroughly16 Tighten all loose screws bolts and locknuts Repair or

replace any damaged parts
