Hippodrome Foundation kicks off the 2013/2014 Season with a Hand Clapping, Foot Stomping Celebration of American Gospel Music.

On Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 8:00pm, Hippodrome Foundation, Inc. (HFI) and Soulful Symphony with Darin Atwater will kick off the 2013/2014 concert season with a new and exciting rendition of the orchestra’s immensely popular “Say Amen Somebody” at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, Baltimore, MD.

This season’s concert draws from a deep well of American Gospel Music and features original orchestrations by composer and conductor Darin Atwater. The concert will escort the audience through a decades-long evolution of one of the most treasured forms of American Roots Music. In addition, the audience will be treated to excerpts from Atwater’s Emmy Award winning “Song in a Strange Land.”

The 2013/2014 season will include a holiday concert on December 14, 2013, “Soulful Holidays,” which will feature rousing renditions of Christmas carols, traditional holiday favorites to adaptations of Messiah and the Nutcracker. Then on May 3, 2014, the final concert will be “So Many Stars,” a concert that will benefit HFI programs that serve thousands of students every year. This concert will showcase, for the first time ever, a genre bending journey through Classical, Jazz, Pop, and Country music - featuring music from artists such as Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin and Leonard Bernstein. The evening will be capped off by the world premiere of Atwater’s latest work “So Many Stars” a Concerto for Soulful Symphony.

“This Season definitely has something for everyone,” says Atwater. “It’s a celebration of American music - it’s symphonic music that draws from the richness of all the traditions realized in American culture.”

Soulful Symphony is an 85 member orchestra with vocals comprised primarily of African-American and Latino musicians that creates opportunities for classically trained minority musicians to showcase their talent. These talented artists appreciate the opportunity to perform different styles of music, spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz and even hip-hop, to create a sound that is distinctly Soulful Symphony. Atwater describes it as a sound that is all American and transcends individual taste.

Soulful Symphony musicians have become a critical part of outreach in HFI partner schools throughout Baltimore, and they are working with students on an on-going basis. HFI is committed to keeping Soulful Symphony based in Baltimore as the resident ensemble at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center. “There is demand from all over the country for Atwater’s library of symphonic orchestrations, we are incredibly fortunate to have Atwater conducting his work here in Maryland,” says Olive Waxter, Director of Hippodrome Foundation, Inc.

Even with a successful LA based entertainment company, recording deals, and personal appearances across the country, Atwater knows Baltimore is the right home for Soulful Symphony.

He Still Comes

And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden.Genesis 3:8

We like to say we are looking for God, but we forget that He comes looking for us.

It was in the cool of the day that Adam heard the voice of God call out to him; “Where art thou?”

It could have been in the early morning before the heat of the day settled in. It could have been in the evening after the air had cooled. God came looking for him.

How do we begin our days? Do we rise with thoughts of our daily calendar running through our minds? Are we already checking off our To Do list before our feet even hit the floor? Are we on the phone – texting, on the computer – emailing or flipping through the day’s worth of bills and debt before we even have our morning coffee?

How do we end our days? Are we exhausted from the day’s stresses and strains? Are we tired from the encounters of the day – both good and bad? Did we forget to eat, hydrate and exercise our bodies?

Where are we when God comes?

God still comes looking for us. In the cool of the day He comes. Before we rush into our day or after it is over, He comes. He’s looking for us. He desires fellowship. He wants to tell us something. He wants to hear from us. He wants to be with us.

He still comes. Where are you?

Power had the delightof getting to know a young17 year old, who should be an inspiration to all parents and young people out there!

Power Magazine had the pleasure to meet and interview Jewel Perry, on the Power Magazine radio Show (airs every Friday at 12 noon, WOLB 1010 AM), accompanied with her father, Mr. Darryl Perry and Grandmother, Rev. Dr. Patricia C. Foster.

Not only can she sing, staring in the leading role as Dorothy in the Broadway Hit “The Wiz”, which recently played at the Arena Players Theater here in Baltimore. Jewel is known for singing at numerous churches and community events. She plays several musical instruments which includes the clarinet and piano! Jewel was even kind enough to shut down the Radio Show by rendering us a song over the air!

Jewel will be a Senior at Seton Keogh in September and her future plans academically, will be either Healthcare orBio-science fields.

Jewel is a member at The Good Shepherd Baptist Church (Rev. Restia Whitaker, Pastor) in the Park Heights area and was quoting to our listeners scripture over the air.

Power Magazine is proud of Jewel and pray that she continues to be an inspiration to all she meets! Keep up the greAt work!
