Getting to grips with the technological information surrounding power banks can seem like a daunting task.

To make it simple, we provide you with an explanation of terms and key features that enable you to select the power bank that best suits your

requirements.

The unit of measure for internal battery capacity, it indicates the amount of energy a battery can store. A 2400 mAh battery can store double the energy of a 1200 mAh battery, for example.

The higher the number, the larger the battery capacity.

Since batteries within various smartphones, tablets and mobile devices vary, the extent to which a certain power bank will charge a given device will vary too. A 2600 mAh power bank may fully charge an iPhone yet the same power bank will only charge an iPad battery to 40% because the internal battery within the iPad is far larger than the iPhone battery.

Perhaps one of the most important factors to consider when selecting a power bank these days, the cycle life of a power bank indicates how many times a battery can be fully recharged and discharged before the capacity is greatly diminished to an unusable or worthless size. This can vary considerably because if someone uses 50% of the battery and then recharges it back to full capacity, this is rated as half a cycle.

Always choose batteries that have true cycle ratings of 300 cycles or more to ensure that your promotional item lasts way past your desired promotional period. Nobody wants a power bank that only lasts a week, right!

So, the higher the cycle life, the longer the life span of the product and the more bang you get for your marketing buck.

All smartphones and tablets have a maximum charging rate / input. This information is important with reference to the charging time.For an optimal charging time it is best if the charging rate of the power bank matches or is higher than the device. It doesn’t mean that a lower output will not charge. It only means that it will take longer for the device to charge.

In the example below in situation A (1A output) the tablet is using approximately 70% of its charging potential. In situation B, the tablet is charged at its maximum charging potential.In the case of the smartphone, in both situations it will charge at its maximum potential.

Lithium Ion vs Lithium PolymerThere are two types of batteries commonly used in portable devices: Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer.The difference in the battery is that Lithium Polymer battery holds its lithium-salt electrolyte in a solid polymer composite, whilst a Lithium Ion battery keeps the electrolyte in an organic solvent. A Lithium Polymer battery tends to be more stable, thinner and lighter than a Lithium Ion battery. It can also be formed into almost any shape.

Travel Restrictions / AdvisoryThe US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced plans to step up security checks on airports with direct flights to the US from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.Further to this, the UK Department for Transport (DfT) announced it had also implemented the additional measures in line with advice from US transportation security authorities. The increased screening could potentially apply to all flights, including transatlantic flights and those connecting the UK to mainland Europe with other countries likely to follow suit.The measures require passengers to demonstrate that electronic devices in carry-on luggage can be activated. If a device is inoperable, the passenger will be barred from taking it aboard the aircraft. The devices in question include all electronic and electrical appliances, including laptop computers, tablets, and mobile phones. Passengers are also advised that devices in checked baggage could be screened as well.

Choosing a power bank or charger can be tricky business. Due to their rising popularity in the Promotional Industry, unscrupulous suppliers are reducing costs by not conducting the necessary safety tests, using cheap PC boards and providing low-grade batteries. These do not only have lower capacity and lifespan than stated, but could also be potentially unstable and dangerous if poorly assembled and not fully safety-tested, possibly even resulting in explosions.

Whilst two products might appear to have the same external appearance, their performance and functionality can differ dramatically.

100% inspection of all incoming batteries, with defective units (distortion, liquid leakage) being removed. Further, voltage and internal resistance is measured against AQL standard to avoid zero internal resistance and similarly to ensure that the IR doesn’t exceed 60 milli-ohm.

PC board testing:a) 100% inspection of appearance for each PCB, with defective units (faulty soldering, bridging defect, missing parts) being removed.b) Ageing tests conducted after soldering: fully charging, fully discharging, fully charging again, fully discharging again, charging 60% to ascertainwhether the charging/discharging data and temperature is ok. c) Floating voltage/overloading voltage test, over current and short circuit protection tests.d) Charge/discharge performance test, charge/discharge time test,over-charge/over-discharge protection test.

In the assembly line the charging voltage/current and discharging voltage/current for each piece is checked to ensure that the voltage/current is neither too high nor too low, either of which would result in abnormal functioning.

Ageing test: upon completion of assembly, every unit undergoes a further ageing test - fully charging, fully discharging, charging 60%. During charging/discharging further checks are conducted to establish that the indicator light is operational, whether the unit becomes hot or emits smoke, if charging/discharging time is normal and whether over-charge/over-discharge is ok.

QA spot check on completed units, employing Ageing Test Equipment, Ageing Rack, Power Bank Tester, load meter and USB tester to test various data. Additionally random “drop tests” are conducted to see if this leads to abnormal functioning of unit thereafter, or any potential safety hazards.
