Opening Remarks
We started of our tenure with ambitious plans. However, we could meet midway through, byhaving had some successful events like Freshers'Introduction, Alumni Visit, Interactive Sessionbetween sophomores and seniors, T-shirtDesigning, fun session called “Discharge,”Research Scholars' Day & Diamond JubileeCelebrations etc. It is interesting to note thatInteractive Session & Discharge have beenorganized for the first time. A mile stone has
been two industrial visits – Railway Wagon Workshop, Kharagpur and Bharatiya Reserve BankNote Mudran Printing Limited, Salboni. Sweat and blood of Office Bearers has been very muchthere in success of all these activities. We would like to personally congratulate each and everyOffice Bearer of the Society for this. A shortfall has been Graduate (M.S., M.Tech. and Ph.D.)students not coming forward enthusiastically. After all, it is the Society of every student ofElectrical Engineering! Here is the magazine 'Power' to you members!
Congratulations for successful 2011-12 and happy 2012-13 .

G.SECs' Remarks
Hi All,
So it's that time of the year again when the General
Secretary (after all the ups and down of the tenure) pens his
mind and heart down. Needless to say, we had our highs and
lows. I sincerely thank Professor Karabi Biswas and Professor
B.M. Mohan for guiding the society throughout the year,
helping us solve the tiniest of problems that held us back.
We attempted to give the Industrial Visit a different
flavour this time. The sole proposition was the fact that
currency printing is something we usually don't get to see in
our casual routines. We tried our best to accommodate as
many as we could and unfortunately we had to turn some of us
down. Overall, the visit to BRBNMPL (RBI Note Printing) was a
good experience, with a huge support from the officials out there who patiently explained
everything time and again.
Equally interestingand unique was the visit to Kharagpur Railway Wagon Workshop, the
biggest of its kind, where students had an opportunity to see and learn a lot of practical
applicability of Engineeringingeneral.
Additionally, we had the idea of starting an interactive counseling session for the second
year students seeking internships. I still don't know how much it helped them but I hope it
would have added to their general understanding of the internship culture we have had for
years. We will be happy to see some of the second years pass this on next year to the incoming-
batch.
Another add on this year was 'Discharge 2012', specifically conducted for the freshers,
with a view of involving them with the society activities and
letting them to mix up at the same time. To be honest, I was
overwhelmed with the kind of interest my junior batches have
shown in whatever little we tried to do for them. Thank you all
for that! I would be more than happy to see you carry the same
tempo forward in your coming years. This is something our
Department very much needs and unfortunately, hasn't seen
over the years.
We were not able to conduct 'Colloquium' this year,
though we had plans but the turn of events somehow failed us

to keep up with the task. My sincere apologies to the enthusiastic folk we disappointed. We
assure that we'll try harder this year to make things work, well within time.I request some co-
operation from all the students – UG, PG and RS for the same – we all need to act as a single
entity.
I would just like to add a few things at the finish. It's we the students who have the
power to make or break things we choose to incorporate in our academic life. We all have
priorities, academics being the topmost for majority of us. Trying to find a few hours from our
schedules to attend a few gatherings we have in the form of farewell, industrial trip or any
similar event, I understand, is not that difficult. It gives us all a better chance to mix up with our
seniors, juniors and batchmates.
We have a very little time on our hands to devote to the Department after all the
Hall activities. I hope to see a change very soon.
Signing off..!

The Editor's Word
It was quite a task to publish “Power 2012” ! I would like to thank the advisors
Prof. Mohan and Prof. Biswas for their support. Kudos to the entire team for yet another
successful tenure of the electrical engineering society. Though it has taken a lot of time to
collect so many articles and data for coming to a final result (magazine), I am glad that this
experiment has finally been completed.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students (especially Balaji) for his
full devotion to the creation of this magazine. The scale on which the past year's events were
organized was just amazing. It's never easy to club all the activities of two semesters in certain
limited pages.
Last year was full of activities with multiple industrial visits and countless other
seminars. But of all, I am sure the most rigorous part of the magazine was to forcefully exact the
articles and cartoons from the students. But all well that ends well.
A final word of thanks to Rachit, Vikram, Kunal, Sujata, Pavitjot, Animesh, Ranbir. Sorry
if I forgot any names.
All the best for the coming academic year!!!

How it all Began…..What were the thoughts which crossed your mind when you saw the title? For some
of you 'What does the writer mean by that?' or 'What is the writer referring to here?' might
be the answer to my question. For some the answer might be something like 'Is he referring
to our department?' or 'Is he referring to some historical event?' Well, for all those who are
still in a fix about the title, let me help you out. This article is based on my personal
experiences which, I think many of you would agree to.
I still remember that fine morning when I decided to take up engineering; the day
when the first thought of getting into an IIT crossed my mind; the first time I saw the
compound of IIT KHARAGPUR while I was still in my train, eagerly waiting to start a new
chapter in the book of my life. I still remember my first visit to my hall; and the institute main
building which made my jaw drop in awe. The first sight of the light house and the words
saying 'Dedicated to the service of the Nation' in the institute main building induced in me a
sense of immense pride and responsibility. Pride because of the place I'm about to spend the
next four years of my life in and responsibility to not let down my peers. These are moments
worth cherishing a life-time; yet they feel like they took place a day or two before.
The first couple of weeks were indeed exciting. Home sickness was overcome by all
the amazing things I got to experience here. Firstly, we had our classes in V1, Vikramshila. The
very sight of these classrooms was something I never imagined before KGP. They made my
classes all the more exciting (not that classes weren't great on their own). However, adjusting
to the climate WAS a bit of a problem, but that's what makes it even more special. The heavy
rainfall teaches you a lot of things. Firstly, ALWAYS carry an umbrella when you go out.
Secondly, the way I see it, when you go to a class in heavy rainfall, a sense of commitment and
dedication is induced and you also start liking the class because you had put in a great deal of
effort in attending it.
Enter societies. Their introductory meetings showcase their abilities in different
respects and introduce a fresher to the land of opportunities; his home to be for the next 4-5
years. As all the students would know, with the arrival of the first set of exams, come mixed
feelings. In my case however, I got a pleasant surprise. With a change of plans and a whole lot
of luck, I chanced to get a last-minute reservation to my place a day before the onset of DP
holidays. Thus, happened my first visit home after 2 months of excitement, amazement and
RAINS. This was how my stay at this wonderful place began. The two semesters I spent here
were one-of-a-kind. This new chapter in my book is definitely one of the most happening
phases of my life.

Write it Down I have always wondered what it would feel like to write an article. Not that I haven't
“written” articles. Everyone has “written” something at some point. Some people end their
writing with the last language exam they have, and even though their last “written” piece gets
them a distinction in the exam. They don't care for writing. Some just have a nose for writing.
They write to their entertainment, their contentment, their enlightenment. They write because
they are good at it. And, then there are people like me. We never write once we are done with
schooling, we just produce pieces from then on. Mostly these pieces are never written, they are
typed. Parts of these pieces are copied straight from the source.
After almost two years of having produced stuff, stuff ranging from case studies, essays,
plays, debates, letters of request, and even one piece of Broadway musical, I feel like writing.
Even if just once, just once to express how I feel about not having “written” for so long. I just
want feel that spontaneity, that rawness and that true sense of originality. My piece should be
one, not corrected by a spelling checker algorithm; nor supported by a thesaurus website, once
I fall short of novelty of words, novelty of expressions; because true writing is about expression
and no matter what kind of language you use, your expression is what your piece stands for. I
mean, there are various ways to display your prowess in using sophisticated words, take the
GRE or take part in some verbal ability test or just take the CAT. There are ways to show your
prowess in using catch phrases, quotes and so on, be a debater, or take up work in marketing.
There are ways to show your general knowledge, be a quizzer or be a quizmaster, publish a quiz-
blog or whatever.
Now, I don't want to be mistaken here. I don't mean to say writing must not include
sophisticated words, cool and catchy phrases or general trivia. All that I intend to say point out is
that, not writing, just because you are not good at any of these or some of the other “central
themes” for pieces is absurd. And, writing merely to showcase any of these skills is no less
absurd. So write, not for anyone else but for yourself. Because, even though producing pieces
might give you fame, money, appreciation, recognition, and everything desirable, writing gives
you quality time for reflection.

The Utopian Fantasy......There's only tears of laughter in my dreamland for two
a land where problems are small , life is large
and all the dreams come true
I go to this place hidden deep in my mind,
where flowers never wilt and all of love is kind
Where lost souls find themselves again
Where Sweet memories forever reign…..
While little children laugh and sing
As they keep running
Where ecstasy is in the air,
Minds are fair,
And Hearts are clear
passions reside in all… there
Oh I'm going back someday ,
Take my hand I'll show you the way
Where lovers love and dreamers dream
And hope is not as hopeless as it may seem

The Wait…...On this lovely evening, I wait for youBy the cliff, the same place we had metThe day has arrived, the day we promised to meetYou had assured me, told me you'd be hereI have kept mine, won't you keep yours dear?
Long years back, I had held your hand andYou had clasped your arms around mineWith a soft kiss, you had asked,“I will be here, will you make me feel safe?”Yet, it is I, who is waiting for you herePlease tell me, why didn't you come dear?
I long for you and the warmth of your tender embraceI crave for your lips and the heat of their touchYet I am alone, waiting for you hereWhy didn't you come, why didn't you dear?
I promise I'll help you forget yourself, on this dayI'll wash away all your yesterdays, all your fearsAnd give you hope, hope in the promise of an embraceBut where are you, why didn't you come dear?
I want to be lost, lost in the depths of your eyesI want to die, die today in your arms, amidst quiet and peace hereI need you to be my angelAnd carry me to heaven with youCan you promise me, can you dear?
I want you to come and let me hold your handAnd help you crossover into the world we belongI promise to be your shield tonightAnd protect you from yourself, your thoughts, sorrows and tearsI want you, I need you hereWon't you come and let me help you dear?

I want your breath to caress my skinI want to hold you, hold you all nightStroke your hair, take you away and make you feel safeJust take my hand and I'll help you escapeI'll have all your pain and disappointments hereYou will come with me tonight, won't you dear?
The vast sea summons, ready to drink us upThe vast land beckons, ready to eat us upThey promise to embrace and erase us from the earthBut I wait for you hereI still have hope that you will come and I'll save you dear.
Now, as the future looks bleakAnd hope starts to dimMy eyes still search for you, my hands stretch out,Stretch out to reach for yours, to take you with meBut my soul rips apart, knowing that tonightI am the only one hereWhy didn't you keep your promise? Tell me, why didn't you dear?

A Ride to rememberYou look back in time trying to recall how it all began. The picture seems a blur but yet
the idea remains distinctly clear. The department of electrical engineering has developed its reputation as one of the most exhaustive departments of the institutes with the laboratory courses holding a special mention. On a completely unrelated note in the parallel universe of extra academic activities going on in the institute the name “Core Team” or The Organising Team (as it is now being made famous thanks to the multitude of Activities in the campus) holds a similar reputation. However you try to combine the two and you have just bought yourself a ticket to the roller-coaster ride of a lifetime. The mix is rare as well as potent but it does come with a “CAUTION” tag attached to it. But despite the flashy tag, there still exist few who try to tread the road less taken.
The sleepless nights, early morning classes and never ending lab reports do put you on the edge to begin with. Suddenly the courses become difficult to cope and the circuits remain unsolved. The diodes turn into transistors and transistors into sophisticated IC's before you even realize what a p-n junction is. Meanwhile you become an expert in using Microsoft products. You start spending a lot of time with word and excel (PT sheets also, they never go) and soon you become a master of it but sadly you don't get grades for it. However, as everything else, you adapt. You figure out a way of fitting in your classes in between your calling sessions (or rather the other way round). The overwhelming feeling vanishes and things seem to come back on track only when again the devil strikes and exams approach. You put your essential contacts to play for notes and a new calling session begins but this time it's the Dep mates and not companies and participants. You give your best shot and get back to your Festival commitments just as the exam concludes. After a couple of blows you get a hold of things and from there it's no looking back.
Time passes and every lab experiment where you aren't thrown out for being unprepared feels like an achievement! The moment of truth or rather the weekend of truth comes in the latter end of January. The months long preparation bends down to those 4 days when you are evaluated. Those are your true exam days. You handle the immense number of activities going around you simultaneously without even realizing that you are doing it. The beats that you have been working on since ages, come together to form a beautiful song. It all starts making sense and before you know it, it's over. It's only then you are left with a bitter sweet aftertaste. Life comes back to normal only when the hangover of the event recedes and in the newly earned “free time” you look back upon your experience. You are amazed how you pulled it off. You never knew you had it in you, the feat seemed unachievable. But then that's why I said that the mixture is potent it puts you face to face with your true abilities. It shows you what you are made of and as the dust settles you accept that the roller coaster ride did have its ups and downs.
The initial falls were scary but when the cart comes to a halt at the end of the ride you get off with a broad smile on your face wishing you could do it all over again.

I Feel YouI feel you around everywhere
with the pleasant breeze and fresh air
I see you in sky and in clouds
your charming face always touts.
I feel you around in the freezing water
with your gaze not letting me smother
I want to be together like we are apiece
like in a necklace tied are beads.
I feel happy I feel game
I sense paradise in your name
You are abject you are peace
your presence adorns and feels like aegis.
You are my poem you are my song
your sweet voice I wanna hear for long
You are generous you are kind
your idyllic disposition keeps us bind.
And I feel that we are one..
One in the way that there is no one
who can debar us from being together
That's what I feel forever and ever…
And I feel you around everywhere……….

Potency of Synergy
The other day when I was going through an article, the word „synergy‟ came across and
I thought about it for some time. Everybody have energy, not a big deal. But synergy… Think
about it. How many of us have really got to be the part of a great synergy??
It's really astonishing if you think about the extra plus it has over mere individual
energies.
Yes, I'm talking about teamwork.
If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon
the shoulders of others
And these words came from a prodigy named Isaac Newton. Even Newton understood
the significance of team work in life. They say that exponential gains are possible when team
and spirit are intersected and we realize it. The potency of this synergy of team and spirit is of
unexplainable magnitude, and the collection of emotion that gets derived in the process,
indescribable.
The lack of this spirit makes the team just a bunch of individuals and such a bunch of
people can never do as good as a team, how much ever skilful each of them are. “Strength lies in
differences, not in similarities”, says Stephen Covey, the author of best-seller, „The seven habits
of highly effective people‟. Every team is in fact an organism and it evolves not by suppressing
the dissonances, but by understanding and embracing them. The spirit of the team lies in here.
At various points of life, Together Everyone Achieves More.

All I want is ace of spades
♫ ♫ I know that the spades are the swords of a soldierI know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this artBut that's not the shape of my heart ♫ ♫
sings Sting in his album, 'The shape of my heart'. (Leon The professional |Film-freaks would know better)
Numerous similes have been made using playing cards. Cards have been compared to a lot of things in the course of time. And interestingly almost all of them look alright too! That's the thing with cards. It's a container, a transparent one for that matter; most things put inside will take the shape of it. It's such a thing that says it all, something which absorbs each and every emotion and endures each and every mood.
Let's try one; Putting on the Forrest Gump accent, 'Life is like a deck of cards. You never know what you're gonna get'. (Again, film-freaks would identify easier.) The comparison is very simple. Beautiful as well. In the game of cards, you never know what hand you are gonna get. But even then, whatever hand you get, winning mostly lies in the way you interpret your hand. Sometimes we like to hide our cards. We put on our poker faces and x-ray the deck of our opponent, while ignoring the hand we've been dealt. Think that's called cheating in the game of cards. But, not so in the game of life... or is it?
The basic question in life is this: 'Do you have the Ace of Spades? Or are you stuck with meaningless cards that won't earn you any points or help you take the lead? But the point here, missed by many, is that sometimes the cards may seem unnecessary, but all the while they'll be like filling our hand and keeping us in the game. Always do remember this in life, it's not about what you've been dealt, but what cards you choose to put down. Take off the poker face and smile in life.
You can just talk stuff about cards and feel them about life. See how it came out. Life is just like a deck of cards, don't you think? Now go on start thinking some other comparison. Here's a lead.
Men are like a deck of cards, you need a heart to love 'em, a diamond to marry 'em,
a club to beat 'em and a spade to bury 'em.
(No sexism intended, of course men can be replaced with women too.) Go on. Think.
Some say wheel is man's greatest invention; I say the deck of cards is!

Society at a Glance….
The Society got a new symbol, new Facebook Page and in a way it had been re-
christened this year. The Society will also be launching a dedicated website for better
communication with the Student community. That
way, Electrical Engineering Society had been
proactive right from beginning of the Autumn
Semester to perform and to deliver.
FRESHERS' INTRO
It all started with Freshers' Introduction
Program at Maitri Auditorium. It was the program
where all First years tasted the Department's flavour
for the first time.
The event kicked off with a welcome note by
Prof. Jayanta Pal, Head of the Department. He
accentuated the importance of strong academics
along with extra curricular activities necessary for
personal development. Dr. Karabi Biswas, Advisor,
Electrical Engineering Society then introduced about
the Society and its activities. Besides, there were
other Professors who apprized the freshers with the various facets of Electrical Engineering.
The Program endedwith a vote of Thanks from Saransh Sharma.
INDUSTRIAL TRIP
The next event to roll on was Industrial trip for 2nd years, 3rd years, M.Tech's and
Research Scholars to BRBNMPL (Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Printing Limited),
Salboni and Railway Wagon Workshop, Kharagpur on 5th November.
1. Visit to Railway Workshop
30 students, Accompanied by Dr. Tanmoy Bhattacharya reached Railway Wagon Work

received and modulated to
power various Departments of
the Work Shop. Transformers,
Circuit breakers, Isolators and
UCB (Unit Control Board) were
identified in the Sub-Station.
They were also shown Safety
Equipment Readings like Power
Current and Power Factor in
UCB. All the students were then
taken to Repairing Workshop
where repairing of Motor
Windings was demonstrated in
live. Afterwards, there was a
small presentation by Deputy
Chief Engineer on Railway System and its working. Doubts regarding Braking systems and
Power source etc. were clarified by Deputy Chief Engineer himself. The presentation was
followed by a live session where Deputy Chief Engineer demonstrated how Electricity is
transmitted from Overhead wires to Traction Motor and subsequently to other components of
the Railway System. Then all the Students visited Railway Workshop where the 2 kinds of AC
bogies were shown and their working was discussed. Finally, The entire group reached back to
the campus by 1:30 pm.
2. Visit to BRBNMPL
Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Printing Limited, abbreviated as BRBNMPL is a
wholly owned subsidiary of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) established for augmenting the
production of bank notes and to enable RBI to bridge the gap between supply and demand for
Currency notes in the country. 62 students, accompanied by Dr. Dheeman Chatterjee and Dr.
Anirban Mukherjee reached BRBNMPL, Salboni at 10:00 am. The entire group was given a
small preparatory talk about various security features present in Currency notes and those
security features are realised. Afterwards, they were taken to the Visitors' Gallery of the
Machinery unit from where all the machinery for processes involved in making of a currency
note like pouring of ink, cutting of notes, embossing of various security features etc. were
clearly shown. Afterwards, there was an informal chat session where people posed questions
regarding Currency and the role of BRBNMPL. Many oooooh!s , aaaah!s and other
exclamations were heard from the crowd when people came to know that All Currency Notes
contain a serial number which has a Letter that indicates the place where it is printed and that
BRBNMPL is responsible only for printing of currency notes but not for their circulation.

ALUMNI VISIT
The Society's calendar in
the Spring semester kicked off
with Alumni vis it to the
Department on 6th of January.
The spirit displayed by Mr Hari
Om Shrivastava, a 1962 pass-
out from the Department is
worth mentioning and inspiring
for all those who witnessed his
Sojourn @Electrical Engineering
Department. After a guided tour
of the Department, He talked about his experiences at Tata Motors where he retired as Head,
Engineering and talked about Living a Successful Life to the 50-odd crowd of Students who
gathered while he was interacting. This 70+ year old veteran remarked “Kgp ka tempo high hai”
at the end as an icing on the cake.
INTERACTIVE SESSION
The event that followed on was an
Interactive Session between Sophomores and
seniors on 17th of January'2012 where doubts
regarding Internships, Department, Foreign
Traineeships and Placements etc. were clarified for
the Audience. The Interactive Session was
envisioned to provide a platform where the
experiences of Final year students and Pre-Final
year students who secured projects in Foreign
Universities are shared. Interactive Session also
served as a platform where seniors reminded the
audience the importance of CGPA and Extra-
Academic Activities for any of their future
endeavours. Also The Speakers have discussed
various aspects of Making Curriculum Vitae,
Application for Foreign Traineeship and various
ways of mailing for the same, and various other

aspects and importance of securing an Internship. In addition, all the doubts and concerns
about various aspects of Student-hood in the Department of Electrical Engineering were
answered. Nikunj Bajaj, Digvijay, Anruaag Gutgutia, Rachit Kothari, Kunal Kishor and Abhinav
Gupta were the Final-year and Pre-Final year students who had contributed to the programme
by sharing their valuable experiences to the audience.
T-SHIRT DESIGNING
As like every year this year also T-Shirt designing competition was held. This year there
were a lot of Designs to select from, Thanks to Prize money. And at last, The honours were
shared by 2 Second years, Sushil Patro and Anirban Chatterjee. Thanks to Contributions from
Sushil Patro and Anirban Chatterjee, We had got a sizzling design for the Department T-shirt for
which there was an amazing response.
DISCHARGE
The Society also organised a fun session called
“Discharge” for all freshers, both UG and PG on 4th February
at F-232. The session included Puzzles, Word games and a
Quiz. The event provided an opportunity for everyone to get
quizzed from many conventional and unconventional
genres of quizzing. The event was conducted in an informal,
fun filled manner with the answers being written, shout-out
or in the infinite bounce format. The Event included
puzzles, logic questions, etc.

The Event saw a turnout of about 30-40 freshers.
Interactive Session and Discharge were organised for the first time through the
Department Society and both the events received a predominantly Positive feedback from all
participants thus encouraging the society to include many more new events in its calendar.
RESEARCH SCHOLARS' DAY & DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
This year Department hosted its
Diamond Jubilee Celebrations along with
its Research Scholars' Day on the 24th of
March, 2012. The day long programme
consisted of two different sessions - the
m o r n i n g s e s s i o n c o m p r i s e d o f
presentations from Research Scholars and
MS students of the Department and in the
second session of the programme, a panel
discussion was held which received the
participation of students, professors and
alumni of the Department along with Prof.
Souvik Bhattacharyya, Dean of Students' Affairs. The Panel Discussion kicked off with a special
mention of the Achievements of the Department. The panellists discussed on the issues like
possible improvements in Department infrastructure, importance of BTPs (Bachelor Term
Project) , changes that could be incorporated in the present curriculum to increase students'
interests and to provide industrial exposure.
GROUP PHOTOGRAPH
This year's Group Photograph witnessed an overwhelming participation from
professors and also the turnout of students had developed from previous years. It became a
tedious session not only because of the wrath of summer heat but also because of the sheer
numbers of people present. Photographer tried hard to get all the faces fit into the frame. All
the graduating Students dared the scorching sun and took their turns to get photographed
along with their batches.
FAREWELL CEREMONY
Farewell was marked by some mind-blowing performances by the graduating students

and also some Cultural performances from Students of the Department; some highly
interesting facts of the students were disclosed by their friends; pep-talks by the passing out
'Engineers' and the studs and of course, distribution of mementos to the students. The
Program also saw the lighter side of some Professors when they spoke. This 2 hour
extravaganza was followed by the buffet dinner (again a very popular event awaited by all the
students of the department throughout the year).
The year left us with some very special moments, sweet memories and of course gave
us many friends, juniors as well as seniors, to be with us all our lives. We wish everyone huge
success in their lives. God bless you all.
