transmission network, to which major power plants,

factories and regional distribution networks are mainly

linked.

Also connects Finland to international electricity

markets.

There are

525,600 minutes

in a year. *The average duration of transmission disturbances for

Fingrid main grid customers is 3 minutes per year.

ELVIS main goalsIncreasing operative efficiency, lowering risk and improving decision making

Process Digitization

Big Data

Master Data

• Next generation streamlining of asset management processes

• 2nd generation performance dashboards

• Integrating all business data• Combining asset mgmt data with IoT

generated data• Enabling industry wide data analytics

• Single source for power system information → One version of the truth

• Data entered only ONCE into ONE system, other systems uses this data

ELVIS is part of Asset Mgmt strategy, not part of IT

Asset Management and Grid Optimization

A high data quality is the foundation for any qualified decision making.

Fingrid has established a coherent setup establishing / guaranteeing the data needed in asset management, in grid optimization, as well as in many other business processes.

Two Fundamental Architectural Strategies

Data should be entered once and distributed as needed

Standard software products should be used with a minimum of customization required.

4. CIM based electrical grid model generated from GIS model

Let’s Focus on Central Parts of Elvis

GIS holds the crucial grid documentation

The PowerGrid Data Model in GIS

The objectives / requirements behind the PowerGrid data model are:

Holds complete and topologically correct documentation of the grid

Supports asset management in cooperation with 3rd party EAM solution

Supports extract to CIM for subsequent complex analyses

Supports life cycles from planning till decommissioning

Requires a minimum of customization

GIS data supporting business processes

Through integrations GIS data is made available to:

• The Maximo asset management solution

• The PSS®ODMS / PSS®E power system planning and analysis solution

Reversely relevant data from Maximo and the PSS solutions is made available in GIS.

Data is entered once and distributed as needed

Integrated with the Asset Management System

In Maximo assets are related to locations originating from GIS.

This allows not only benefitting from the ‘hierarchical’ / relational information from GIS.

As locations are geometric the asset manager may also search and visualize intuitively /

efficiently using maps.

The Asset Management System

The Maximo solution handles tasks related to:

Asset life cycle tracking

Maintenance planning and documenting

Work management

Inventory management

Procurement management

Business value as of now – asset management-wise

• Previous Elnet Grid Information System, which has been in use for more than 20 years, has been replaced by ELVIS

• With better business process support and lots of flexibility it is now• Easier to calculate the value of the grid• Possible to make more accurate calculating and assessment of life-cycle costs.• Easier and quicker to access relevant and updated information for Fingrid personnel –

centrally as well as in the field using mobile devices.

• The consolidated data strategy ensures the high data quality that is the foundation for any qualified decision making.

Right of Way Management – work order management

Another great example of GIS and Maximo co-existence is with respect to the

Right of Way management.

• Right of Way aims at protecting property (overhead lines)

• Tree trimming has been out-sourced

• The solution eases

– Tendering

– Contract management

– Access to data for external parties

– Tracking the progress of work

Grid Documentation from GIS used in grid planning

The same GIS data is used for advanced network analyses and grid planning using

PSS®ODMS / PSS®E.

This is enabled using an integration based on the IEC CIM standard as

recommended by ENTSO-E.

Results Visualized in The Map

Visualizing results in a map

reveals patterns / contexts

that often are hard to

deduct from spreadsheets /

KPI’s etc.

These examples of GIS

visualizing results from

network analyses speak for

themselves. GIS heat maps using PSS analysis results

Business value as of now – network analysis-wise

• Grid planning and grid optimization in electric transmission always means big expenditures / big potential savings.

• The consolidated data strategy and corresponding standard-based integration between GIS and analysis tools ensures the data required for planning / analysis

• By providing the very high quality of data that is required for analyses, power engineers may focus their time on actually analyzing rather than providing data.

• By subsequently applying the analysis data in GIS • Patterns become clear• Assets exposed to heavy loading may be pinpointed and offered extra attention.

Ensuring a High Data Quality

With GIS responsible for these crucial data,

ensuring high data quality becomes a central concern.

The recent data migration from various sources led to impressive results.

The chosen Esri ArcGIS solution holds inherent functionality streamlining the

ongoing processes maintaining the required data quality at the source.

Keeping in mind that

A high data quality is the foundation for any qualified decision making

this is pivotal.

Concluding so far…

With the ELVIS project

Fingrid has established a setup

streamlining crucial business processes related to

asset management and to grid analysis

The success is to a large extent based on a coherent use of data from GIS.

Concluding so far…

At Fingrid spatial information now constitutes key

corporate data that is used by all business functions,

i.e. planning, operation, construction, maintenance,

accounting, etc.

By bringing real time - and historical data originating from SCADA into ELVIS Fingrid plan on further

streamlining:

• Outage switching planning and execution

• Asset management and fault predicting

• More widespread access to and use of

this essential set of data
