WelcomeReviewing superb chalets and hotels around
the world’s best ski resorts for this second
edition of Powder Retreats, it struck me that
while all offer an exceptionally high standard of
accommodation and service, what I valued the
most was the peace, and the escape from the
realities of everyday life.
As we battle to master the ever-greater array of
communication devices, or to understand the
fee structures of airlines, the chance to just say
“Enough!” and escape to a wonderful place in a
beautiful mountain resort becomes ever stronger.
In some ways it’s a blessing that technology
has made such an impact in the mountain, with
the latest apps capable of bringing us live snow
reports, locating friends on the mountain we
didn’t know were holidaying at the same time
as ourselves, or in the worst case scenario,
geolocating us and calling mountain rescue
with our co-ordinates.
Conversely, emerging from the airport baggage
scrum to be collected by a smiling and efficient
chauffeur, who will whisk you to a luxurious
mountain retreat for a superb meal before
retiring to a private suite, and just turning off all
those electronic gizmos seems to become an
evermore appealing prospect. So appealing, in
fact, that once ensconced in that peaceful luxury
it’s sometimes hard to motivate yourself in the
morning to even get out and hit the slopes!
It has, of course, been a pleasure to review
the superb hotels and chalets that fill the
following pages, and good to know that
despite what seems to be an endless tide of
worldwide economic gloom, entrepreneurs
and enthusiasts are still managing to create
fresh perfect Alpine escapes to add to the
established list of the world’s best.
Indeed, the growing choice continues to
drive standards ever higher, and make
establishments more innovative in what they
offer as they battle to stand out. You will find
some imaginative ideas in the provision of
luxury services within these pages.
Of course, a little pampering is always nice
to make the experience extra special, and
while the grand hotels offer spectacular spas
covering hundreds, sometimes thousands
of m2 of floor space, even the most intimate
properties offer a Jacuzzi, usually with a
wonderful view and a well-trained masseur.
Wherever you end up, I hope you enjoy your
Powder Retreat.

FranceSkiing in France has it all – classic ski areas,
modern ski in/out areas, high-altitude snow-
sure terrain, and more than two-thirds of the
world’s biggest ski regions.
Add to the mix the famous French ambience,
a love of good food, and the proximity to the
UK – direct from London by rail, Eurotunnel
and fast French motorways, or by air – and
it’s no surprise that nearly half of all ski
holidays by British visitors are in French
resorts. About twice as many as to the
country’s nearest rival, Austria.
It hasn’t always been that way, French skiing
has only really come into its own over the past
few decades, as the purpose-built resorts
of the 1960s and 70s matured, expanded
and interlinked. But, in many ways, that later
development has been to the advantage of
French skiing, with resort planners enjoying
a blank canvas on which to develop state-of-

the art lift systems and ski runs. Today you
can even ski over the border into Andorra,
Switzerland or Italy from French ski slopes.
With notable exceptions, such as pioneering
Chamonix, megève, Val d’Isère, and more
recently Courchevel, luxury accommodation
was harder to find than in other skiing
nations in the Alps until recently too. But the
introduction of a 5 category a few years
ago has changed all that, combined with a
recognition that ever more people wanted
to stay in chalets and hotels that lived up to
the grandeur of the French Alps and their
spectacular ski areas.
Although the new breed of luxury properties
and 5 hotels remain concentrated in a
handful of famous French resorts, other
villages like méribel, morzine and Sainte
Foy are increasingly home to luxury chalets
too, often British-owned and run. Beautifully
converting traditional old farm buildings
is most popular, rather than the modern
apartments for which French skiing is
infamous, however, most still employ French
staff, particularly for the catering!

Chalet de la Cloche is situated in the heart of
Les Brévières, one of the seven villages that
make up what is often considered to be one of
the greatest ski areas in the world, Espace Killy.
The region combines two of the best resorts
in France, Val d’Isère and Tignes, and offers
an amazingly diverse range of skiing. There
is something for everyone with over 300km
of marked pistes. Ski lessons or guiding can
be prearranged with the top instructors in the
Espace Killy area.
The Ski-Base team have created a wonderful
chalet described by Harpers Bazaar as
a “haven of sensual indulgence”. It is one of
Condé Nast Traveller’s top 10 chalets in the
Alps, and was shortlisted for the Design Et
Al International hotel and Property Awards
2011. Specifically designed and built to the
most exacting standards, the attention to
detail is obvious, even down to the elegant
and contemporary interior where all the
furniture has been designed and made
uniquely for the chalet. All bedrooms have a
balcony, a plasma TV, a luxury bathroom with
hermes amenities, and a super king bed with
a memory foam mattress.

Purple Ski has been organising luxury chalet
holidays in méribel for 20 years, building up
unrivalled experience in the resort that sits at
the heart of the world’s largest ski area, Les
3 Vallées.
The company’s portfolio of chalets has been
constantly fine-tuned and now extends to five
of Méribel's finest chalets.
Each choice is unique in style and design, but
all offer Purple Ski’s signature assets including
hot tubs, saunas, sunny balconies, superb
views, cosy log fires and, of course, en-suite
bedrooms. What really sets the chalets apart is
Purple Ski’s warm and welcoming atmosphere,
exceptional cuisine and impeccable service.
Lapin Blanc sleeps 14 (all on super king sized
beds in rooms with superb en-suite facilities),
and is arguably méribel's ultimate chalet. Totally
redesigned and refurbished it is in one of the
most enviable positions in the resort, at the
bottom of the Georges mauduit piste and boasts
wonderful views towards the Tougnette side of
the mountain. The vast sitting/dining room at the
heart of the chalet has a central open log fire with
access to the mezzanine above, and through the
large picture windows, which open on to the sun
terrace, there are south-facing views.’

Another great choice is Chalet Foinsbois.
With its spacious bedrooms, able to sleep
up to 15 guests, it is beautifully furnished
and offers a very secluded location at the
end of a private drive in the ultra-discreet
méribel village. Yet it is wonderfully located
too, in arguably the most sought-after
position in the resort. The nearest high
speed lift is a 2-minute walk away and it’s
possible to ski right back to the chalet.
The luxuriously furnished chalet’s living area is
focused on the central fireplace, and facilities
include a sauna, games room, gym, cinema
room and an outdoor hot tub, which is formed
out of beautiful old stone.

Chamonix may be one of the world’s top
resorts but it sits in a narrow, shady valley, and
finding accommodation that maximises the
view, stretching up more than 3000m above,
can be a challenge.
Step forward Chalet Cerisier, which is situated
in the perfect spot to take full advantage
of some of the most dramatic views in the
Alps. It’s located just outside the famous ski
town in a wide and sunny part of the valley.
To the south, the twin peaks of the Drus and
the Aiguille Vert rise to over 4000m, to the
west mont Blanc itself dominates the skyline.
Completed in 2006, Le Cerisier is one of the last
chalets built by Pierre Trappier, the pre-eminent
chalet builder in the region. It successfully
combines a massive wooden construction in
the alpine tradition with modern aesthetic and
ecological considerations.
Sleeping ten guests in five bedrooms, each
with its own individually designed bathroom,
guests are spoilt for choice. The chalet is a
haven of tranquillity, full of space and light, and
the large open log fire adds a cosy ambience,
whilst underfloor heating throughout is provided
by a geothermal system. The magnificent views through the huge
picture windows and from the equally
large balcony.
You choose between the large master
bedroom, airy light upper rooms, self-
contained studio room or ground floor
bedroom with wet room.

The Experts in Luxury Ski hol iday Advice
It’s the conundrum of the modern era –
travel agents seem outdated in our hi-tech
world of websites and direct booking,
and yet we often find ourselves spending
valuable hours trawling the internet trying
to find the right ski accommodation and
travel package, and often ending up with
something that’s not quite right, or with a
crucial part of the holiday missing. In the
worst case we don’t realise our mistake until
we arrive in the resort.
Step forward The Oxford Ski Company, the
luxury ski travel specialist. Definitely don’t think
here of a high Street travel agency where the
poor girl behind the desk knows less than you
do. Think instead of the ski holiday equivalent
of a long-established private financial advisor, a
trusted family friend whose two key assets are
that they know exactly what you are personally
looking for from your ski holiday, and they have
an encyclopaedic knowledge of every luxury
ski property, and reliable, comfortable and
convenient ways to reach them.
Better still their service is free of charge to you,

Swi tzer landThis is where it all began, in 1864, when a
clever hotelier challenged some British ”grand
tourists” visiting in the summer that if they
spent the winter in Switzerland they’d find it
brighter and sunnier than London, and despite
being up at about 1829m it wouldn’t be as cold
as in the British capital, and on top of that they
might even have fun in the snow. The bet was
placed by the manager of the Kulm hotel, one
of the very few people who stayed the winter
up in the little hamlet of St moritz, and the bet
was a free stay all winter. Within a few decades
St moritz was the leading winter sports
destination in the Alps, the first electric lights

Alpine nations really got started. Famous
names like Gstaad, mürren, Grindelwald,
Villars, Davos and Klosters emerged as
top ski destinations, and new resorts were
created in stunning locations such as
Wengen, with its views of the Eiger and
Jungfrau – now a UnESCO World natural
heritage Site.
This was all really before downhill skiing took
off, but take off it did, driven by British pioneers
such as the Downhill Only Ski Club, established
in 1925, who made use of Switzerland’s
mountain railway network to get a lift up in
order to ski down.
And now, nearly 150 years on, Switzerland
remains the country that most people
name as their favourite ski destination. The
combination of magnificent scenery, often
spectacular skiing, atmospheric alpine
villages, and typically excellent food and
service is very difficult to beat. It may also be
Europe’s most expensive ski destination by
some distance, but most of its devotees feel
that it’s well worth it.

Zermatt is a very special resort, with Europe’s
highest lifts, one of the world’s biggest lift-
served verticals, and the iconic backdrop of the
matterhorn making it hard to beat.
The resort is full of top class accommodation
too, so to stand out is a challenge, and the
answer from the matterhorn Focus team was to
design the hotel like a work of art.
This “Design and Lifestyle hotel Garni” was
created by heinz Julen, world famous for
his eye-catching creations. With its distinct
lines, the architectural style follows that of the
mountain railways, creating a building that
is elegant, without being obtrusive, blending
perfectly into the mountain environment.
The hotel is not big, with just 30 spacious
double, superior double family rooms and
suites, some with freestanding bath tubs
specially created for the hotel, placed to
provide a view of the matterhorn, others
looking on to the resort’s car-free, but often
bustling streets.
heinz Julen was responsible for the interior
design and all the rooms are furnished with
furniture and works of art created by him.

There are many very special cool features to

success of the matterhorn Focus, behind the
great design and the excellent facilities, is the
high standard of discreet but attentive service

“Staying at Chesetta is not like a break in a five-
star hotel, it’s like staying with wealthy relatives
who can’t do enough to make you happy.”
Financial News
But how does Chesetta go that extra mile to
take it beyond regular 5 service?
Well Chesetta is not a property built for
rental, it is the owner’s home, and the doors
are opened to guests when they are not using
it themselves.
Chesetta’s owners grew up locally and carefully
selected their staff from the area to ensure
in-depth local knowledge, and to provide a
luxurious and discrete alternative to the typical
St moritz holiday.
The staff are employed year-round to look
after the property and, as a result, they not
only know the area exceptionally well, but they
also work very hard to make “their home” your
home during your stay.
In summertime, they’re sent to widen their
experience in some of the world’s great hotels

skills to perfection.
Located 5 minutes from the centre of St moritz,

Waldhaus Sils – a family affair since 1908, is

As rich in history as it is in service quality and

over a century ago entirely from materials
arriving on horsecarts from the train stations
of St moritz and Chiavenna. The romantic,
castle-like exterior designed by Karl Koller
(1873-1946), one of the foremost Swiss hotel
architects of the time, hid amazingly modern
concepts and ideas.
It’s a philosophy which continues to this day,
because although the Waldhaus Sils is proud to
have stayed within its original physical dimensions
in order to maintain high personal service
standards, it has continually evolved from within,
adding its wonderful swimming pool and spa,
underground parking, and nearly quadrupling the
number of guest bathrooms from 40 on opening
to 150 today! But increasingly the Waldhaus Sils’
priorities have shifted from merely modernising
the hotel, to restoring its vintage charms and
character to their 1908 glory. no expense has
been spared in a careful restoration of the bar, the
Arvenstube restaurant and the reading room.

Austr iaAustria is the home of alpine skiing. The sport
began in 1905 in the village of Lilienfeld, not far
from Vienna, when pioneer mathias Zdarsky
(1856–1940) organised the first slalom race on
the slopes of the local muckenkogel mountain.
Around the same time the Arlberg region,
and the resorts of Lech and St Anton, was
establishing itself as one of the pioneering
downhill ski areas, thanks to the Arlberg Ski
Club and hannes Schneider’s world-famous
Arlberg Ski School, which offered expertise
in the new technique, thus superseding the
norwegian telemark model.
Soon after, some of the world’s best-known
ski areas developed, including St Johann,
Kitzbühel, Seefeld, Saalbach-hinterglemm
(the country’s second most popular tourism
destination after Vienna), and Zell am See.
Today, Austria has over 600 skiing areas,

more than any other country. They are not the
biggest or the highest in the Alps, but for many
people they are the best, and before the rise of
France in the 1980s, more Brits visited Austrian
ski areas than those of any other country.
And many still do. Austria’s intimate ski areas
are some of the easiest to reach – many within
90 minutes, often less, of Innsbruck or Salzburg
airports. There are almost no soulless purpose-
built resorts here, and in contrast, strict planning
laws mean that almost all resorts are comprised
of traditional wooden chalet-style buildings, with
none of the concrete blocks that blight some of
the best-known French, Italian and Swiss resorts.
Despite having lower peaks than its
neighbours, Austria also has the most glacier
skiing in the world, with 10 resorts to choose
from opening at various points between June
and September, including year-round hintertux.
The country also boasts Europe’s only true
ski city, in the shape of beautiful Innsbruck,
three-times an Olympic centre, with its own
area ski pass, which includes a ski bus from
your hotel to one of eight ski areas; these
include the extensive year-round skiing on
the Stubai glacier and day trips to other big-
name resorts.

I ta lyItaly is home to more than 300 ski areas
spreading from east to west along its
northern border, down through Tuscany and
the Apennines to ski centres around Rome,
and even on mount Etna in Sicily. In short it
is one of the biggest and most diverse skiing
nations in Europe.
Italian skiing has a long history; classic resorts
such as Cortina d’Ampezzo, madonna di
Campiglio, and Selva in Val Gardena were
famous in the 1930s, after the first resort
had been established at Claviere on the
French border. The Italians also pioneered
purpose-built ski centres with the aid of large
corporations such as Fiat, and famous centres
such as Sestière were created long before the
French had thought of them.
There is also a diverse choice of mountain
scenery, from skiing beneath mont Blanc
(monte Bianco) or the matterhorn (monte

Cervino) from Courmayeur or Cervinia in the
west of the country, to the stunningly beautiful
pink granite cliffs of the Dolomites in the east, a
UnESCO World natural heritage Site.
Today, the country is home to some of the
world’s largest ski areas, the most famous
being the Dolomiti Superski, which for
more than 30 years has connected a dozen
neighbouring valleys, offering 1200km of piste
and about 450 ski lifts all on one ticket. They
include the Sella Ronda circuit, which connects
about 500km of piste around a central
mountain, probably the world’s second largest
lift-linked ski area.
But do people visit Italy for the skiing and the
scenery? Well perhaps, but Italians are also
famous for their love of good things and their
relaxed attitude to life. Italy’s an excellent choice
if you’re looking for friendly people, where eating
the best cuisine and providing the best service is
second nature, and not something planned out
by corporate management.

Can you stay in a classic ski resort, within one of
the world’s most beautiful ski areas, in a luxurious
hotel and still be kind to the environment?
Domenico and miriam Schiavon, owners of
the beautiful hotel Chalet del Sogno, located
in woodland at the edge of madonna di
Campiglio, believe so.
Despite its ageless appearance, the hotel
Chalet del Sogno was built to bioarchitectural
standards, and is eco-certified for its reduced
environmental impact. The well-insulated
building is heated with geothermal energy,
and built using only natural materials including
wood, wool, lime and local stone. The hotel has
a number of wonderful suites in junior, family
and king sizes. The 48m² “del Sogno” King
Suite is one of the best. Along with a combined
wool carpeted and larch wood floor, the golden-
yellow draperies give brightness to the room,
which is further warmed by an antique stove.
The large bathroom is equipped with a double
Teuco hydro-shower.
Gourmet cuisine prepared by expert chefs is
the norm too. Enjoy meals made with local
valley Alpine cheese, fish and meats, along with
the famed Surgiva mineral water.
There’s also a wonderful spa complete with
pool, gym, hammam, biosauna, treatment
rooms and much, much more.

canadaCanada has ski areas stretching right across
the country from coast to coast, but their
development has varied depending on location.
The country has about 300 ski areas, but two-
thirds of these are relatively small resorts in the
east of the country, in provinces such as Quebec
and Ontario, close to major population centres like
montreal and Toronto.
The remainder are much bigger ski areas on
much bigger ski hills. For the most part, the
resorts of Alberta and British Columbia, which
are perhaps the most well known in the country
today, have only made it big in the last few
decades, and that’s because of destination
travel rather than local populations.
And wow, have they made it big. Whistler
Blackcomb expanded through the 1990s to
become one of the biggest destinations on the
planet, hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, and
thanks to its glacier skiing it offers the longest

season of any major north American resort. And
resorts like Fernie and Big White offer some of the
deepest average annual snowfalls on the planet,
then there’s Kicking horse, only 10-years-old, with
a reputation for its steep terrain.
A lot of this modern development can be
credited to hosting the 1988 Calgary Olympics,
which helped to publicise the region and
open up air routes; but some Western resorts
like Banff and Lake Louise had been famous
long before, as they were created when the
Canadian Pacific railway passed through over
a century ago to help attract tourism onto the
new rail routes. mt norquay at Banff celebrated
80 years of operating in 2011 – one of the
world’s oldest downhill ski areas.
Western Canada has also developed a
reputation as the world’s top heli-skiing
destination, with increasing numbers of
operations offering 2600km² territories of
untouched powder snow on huge verticals, and
promoting them as an ultimate ski experience.
But those original east coast resorts shouldn’t be
forgotten, particularly Tremblant, still under the
same ownership as Whistler, which despite being
smaller in stature, attracts the biggest numbers in
the country thanks to its high-quality experience.

LebanonDescribed, as “the Switzerland of the middle
East” by many, skiing in Lebanon is far more
popular than most expect it to be, and is home
to six ski resorts with a total of 46 ski lifts.
Skiing isn’t a new pastime in the country and
has been exploited in the mountains since the
1950’s when the first lifts were installed at the
Cedars resort.
Ever popular with cross-country skiers, the
best of Lebanon’s snow does, in places, lie
beyond the marked pistes, and whatever
your preferred ski discipline, hiring a local
guide allows you to discover real treats.
Adrenaline junkies can also get their snow
fix in many of the countries resorts, where
snowmobiling is yet another way to explore
the snow-capped peaks.
Lebanon is highly unique in the fact that
you can ski until lunchtime and swim in the
warm waters of the mediterranean Sea in
100
the afternoon. The Lebanese mountains rise
up very quickly above the narrow coastline,
making the resorts in very close proximity to
the sea.
The two major resorts of the country, Faraya
mzaar and Cedars remain the most popular
with tourists, in particular Faraya mzaar with
its world-class infrastructure. The resort
now boasts 42 pistes, covering over 80km
of ground and is located just one hour from
Beirut. The queues at the resorts 18 lifts are
refreshingly short compared to those in many
European resorts, and the extensive lift system
allows for varied skiing.
Situated at 1850 metres the resort offers skiing
to 2465 metres, the height of mzaar mountain,
where breathtaking views of the mountains and
the sea can be found on a clear day.
The popularity of winter sports in Lebanon
continues to flourish and for those looking to
experience snow off the beaten track, then
heading to the country this season is a must.
The season in Lebanon is very similar to that of
the Alps, with resorts opening in December and
closing in April.
