thReport of 4 APMA Board Meeting thAPMA Board meeting was held on 17 Oct 2012, during PM2012

Powder Metallurgy World Congress at Yokohama, Japan.

Mr. Isamu Kikuchi, President APMA called the meeting to order and all members introduced themselves. Mr. Takashi Saito translated the chair's remarks from Japanese to English and Mr. Yu Yang translated the Chinese delegation remarks from Chinese to English.

Mr. Kazuyoshi Tsunoda, President Japan Powder Metallurgy Association made a report on the on-going PM2012 PM World Congress the highlights of which were that the targets were mostly met (370 papers out of 400 targeted, 664 delegates out of 700 targeted, sold out exhibition- 147 booths taken by 90 Co.s and 3400 exhibition visitors in the 2 days elapsed at the time of the meeting against 3000 expected) but unfortunately JPMA expected to suffer a financial loss due to the high cost of facilities. Mr. Yoo Dong Hahn, President Korean Powder Metallurgy Institute made a report on the 1st APMA International Conference held in Jeju Islands, Korea (organized by the Korean Powder Metallurgy Institute) from Oct 30th to Nov 2, 2011. He reported that there were 156 presentations (2 from India), 215 participants (4 from India) and a surplus of USD approx. 2,500/-. He presented the APMA income and expenditure statement.

Mr. Isamu Kikuchi said the membership fee of APMA was to remain unchanged (at USD 1000/- per year) till the next Board meeting.

The term of Mr. Isamu Kikuchi as President APMA expired and he was re-elected without opposition for an additional term of 2 years till 2014. Prof. Hideshi Miura, presently the Secretary APMA was similarly re-elected.

Ms. Han Wei who spoke on behalf of SATI-PM, China proposed that the next (2nd) APMA international Conference should be held in Xiamen, China. She said that the conference could be scheduled from 4th to 6th Nov, 2013 and concurrent with their local conference to be held from 3rd to 4th and that SATI-PM, a federation of Chinese PM associations would organize the event. Prof. Miura, President Japan Society for Powder Metallurgy pointed out there existed at the present time a feeling of hatred in China towards the Japanese on account of a dispute over an archipelago (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senkaku_Islands). There were violent attacks on Japanese establishments in China and he said that if this continues it may become difficult for the Japanese to attend.

Ms. Wei responded that all present were PM professionals and gathered to promote the science and practice of Powder Metallurgy. They were not in a position to influence the political scenario. She said what they could do was to promote scientific and industrial exchange and their organization (SATI-PM) would do to the best of their ability and hope that the tensions would ease in a short time.

Her reply was well received and the motion to allow SATI-PM to organize (and pay for) the next APMA Conference at Xiamen, China was passed unanimously with APMA secretariat contributing USD 5000/- as 'assistance' funds. Three applications for membership to APMA from those who attended the meeting were received and approved. These were from;

The members were informed that the next World Congress was to return to Asia in 2018 and a venue was to be selected. Members from the SATI-PM delegation asked for China to be announced as the venue, city to be chosen later. Immediate acceptance was not forthcoming and it was decided that the announcement would be made at the conclusion of the next APMA conference at Xiamen, China provided that the conference quality was acceptable.

It was decided that the next APMA Board meeting would be held during the APMA Conference at Xiamen.

Sundry discussions were held on website interlinking, communication between members, translation of Japanese and Korean technical papers into English but the response from different members were mixed and no resolutions were passed.
