Article abstractThe objective of this theoretical essay is to discuss a conceptual definition ofalienation and its application to a socio-psychological approach. Referring toseveral previous studies, the author describes various dimensions ofalienation. He also shows how the other concept of self-actualization may beuseful to re-define alienation in the context of personality theory and socialpsychology. The author finally suggests some modifications to Carl Roger'stheory of self-actualization (particularly the introduction of the concepts ofpower and action) that would allow the social psychologist to make use of thistheory to study personal experience in a social context.
