It Might Preach!

In the aftermath of the May 19th and 20th tornados, I have been amazed at the Pastors and lay-leaders of the churches who have stepped up so quickly to help those in need. New Hope, Blackburn Chapel, Emmanuel McLoud, all of which had no damage to their church buildings, have acti-vated many, many volunteers to distribute food, water, personal items and gift cards to families affected by the “Bethel Acres-Dale-Shawnee Storm.” First Baptist Chandler, First Baptist Carney and numerous others have served families affected by the “Carney Storm.” I could not be more proud of our Disaster Relief volunteers who have come to the aide of our churches and the citizens of Pottawatomie and Lin-coln Counties and even some in Cleveland County. There is no way that words could express our gratitude for your immediate and phenomenal re-sponse. We have received endless calls from individuals, churches and associations from Texas to Baltimore, MD wanting to know how they can help. Our sister churches in the North Texas Baptist Area Association has sent us $5000.00 for local use. Many others have channeled money to the BGCO Disaster Relief Fund at the Baptist Building in OKC. We are ex-tremely grateful for all the support of every kind. We are especially thankful for the ongoing prayers for the families in our area who have lost so much. It is a wonderful joy to let those in need know that help and hope is on the way. To God be the glory!

Encouragingly Yours, Russell R. Cook

“When We Stand Before God” II Corinthians 5:10

With reference to fruitless Christians who find themselves at the Judgment Seat of Christ, Dr. Charles Stanley says, “Imagine standing before God and seeing all you have lived for reduced to ashes.” When we, as Christians, stand before God, what kind of place is this JUDGMENT SEAT? It is not a “mercy seat,” it is a “judgment seat.”

I. It is a place of REQUIREMENT (v.10a “We must all appear…”) A. This judgment is required OF ALL BELIEVERS (“We…”) B. This judgment is required WITHOUT ANY EXCEPTIONS (“We must all…”)

II. It is a place of REVELATION (v.10b “We must all appear…”) This is a personal appearance in bodily form (“we will all stand”)

Jesus was judged for our sin...but we will be judged for our service.

A. The TOTALITY OF OUR SERVICE will be revealed (i.e. all our service) cf. Luke 12:2-3 B. The QUALITY OF OUR SERVICE will be revealed (i.e. kind of service) cf. I Corinthians 3:13 C. The MOTIVE OF OUR SERVICE will be revealed (i.e. the why of service) cf. I Corinthians 4:5

III. It is a place of RECOMPENSE (v.10c “...so that each one may be recompensed…”) “Recompense” - “to receive, to receive back, recover, metaphorically of

requited.” Has a POSITIVE (reward) dimension and a NEGATIVE (reproof) dimension.

A. We may receive REWARD for our GOOD DEEDS (v. 10d “...for deeds in the body, whether good...”) -cf. I Corinthians 3:14; 4:5

B. We may receive REPROOF for our BAD DEEDS (v.10e “...whether...bad.”) -cf. I Corinthians 3:15; Colossians 3:25 We will all stand before God. We will be judged by God as to the QUALITY and MOTIVATION of our service. May we be able to say, at that crucial place, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith;... there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award me on that day...” (II Timothy 4:7-8).

OBU International Students

Every year the Lord is gracious enough to allow the community at Okla-homa Baptist University to minister to about 100 international students from over 25 different countries around the world. When an international student is picked up from the airport they only have what they can fit in the two pieces of luggage allowed by the airlines. This means many important items have to be purchased once they arrived on campus. In order to bless these students and ease their transition into the OBU community we are collecting items to place baskets in each of their rooms, including necessities, to get themselves through the first week on campus. Last year several local churches participated and over 40 students were blessed by receiving these gifts. They also heard the reason they received them is because local churches love them, they are not here by accident, and the Lord has a plan for them at OBU! This has made a big difference in the lives of these stu-dents each year. This year we hope to bless even more international stu-dents and missionary children with these gifts! If you would like to participate or would just like more information; please contact me. I would love to tell you more about our vision for reaching the nations on our campus. I hope to stay in contact as we join together for the great harvest the Lord has ready for us during the 2013-2014 school year. Please let us know through email by June 28th if you plan to participate. Bas-

ket items will be collected on or before August 9th.

A NUGGET FROM MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY…

As Russell and I recently spent a few days caring for three of our precious grandchil-dren (ages 5, 4, and 6 weeks) I had time to consider, as a Nana, the preciousness of generations and the remarkable thing called human history. As I held my newest grandson, Judah, I suddenly was more aware than ever of how significant each and every decision we make really is in the eternal scope of things. We have all learned in biology/health classes that there is only a split second in eternity for each of us to be conceived as uniquely “us.” It occurred to me suddenly how my “own” past decisions had played a part in the existence of this precisely unique tiny child in my arms. Obeying God’s leading in marrying his PaPa…getting married at the exact day/hour “we” chose over 41 years ago…having each of our own children at the exact moment “we” did…his mommy (our 3rd child) marrying his daddy on the exact day and hour “they” chose for their wedding…and for “them” to have his two sisters 4 & 5 years earlier and then to have him when “they” did! Even Judah’s birth date was “chosen” by the hospital calendar this year! NOT! How important are each of our daily decisions? Ones we may or may not often afford a lot of thought? How important is it that we consult God, no matter whether large or small decisions are at hand? We tend to give more credence to what we see as major, in-your-face, decisions! We tend to overlook what we are more likely to consider as mundane, everyday deci-sions. Case in point: Since my major surgeries 2 years ago, I have been medically consigned to a 20# limit for lifting, pushing, pulling. Thereby, I generally shop Wal-Mart in one of their motorized carts. Last week, I made a “random” decision to pull into the shortest check-out line…mundane, huh? Not so. Suddenly the lady in front of me leaned over her cart, head in hand. Then she knelt between her cart and mine. I inquired if she was “okay???” No, she wasn’t. She has breast cancer and Lupus and her husband was at home as a disabled Vietnam Vet and she was suddenly over-whelmed by her attempt at shopping by herself and was on the verge of total col-lapse! Wow! I understood the weakness that can hit in a store like that. I stood up…helped her unload her light things from her cart while she sat in mine…hugged her neck…rubbed her back…gave her my extra pack of Kleenex for her sudden, apolo-getic meltdown…and helped get her carry-out assistance. Eventually I learned only her first name as we talked briefly. When I mentioned God, she said, “Oh, I have prayed that He would help me but I feel like my need is so small, He surely has more important things to do.” As the line continued to lengthen behind us, I reassured her that nothing is too big or too small for God to care about and to take care of because He loves us! As she checked out, she thanked me more than once, and left with a smile coming through the tears and went on her way. What if “I” had chosen a differ-ent line at that moment at Wal-Mart??? I pray that “my” decision to go into that particular checkout line will somehow have an eternal effect upon the lives of that lady and her family! As for those in line behind us…who knows??? Yes, Who, indeed???

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,

plans to prosper you and not to harm you,

plans to give you a hope and a future.”

tornado victims. By 1:00 p.m. Monday, following the

Sunday night storm, the City of Shawnee announced

they had received everything they needed at the current

time for the Disaster Relief Command Post (Expo

Center). The BGCO Disaster Relief Team will need

many, many more chainsaw crews to help with cleanup.

Hundreds of trees still cover

houses and cars. If you are a

trained BGCO Disaster Relief

Volunteer contact the “Blue Cap”

in your area. More information is

available at plba.org.
