With Rob List [USA/NL] One of the major challenges for the performing artist, regard-

less of form or style of performance, is of actually »being in the moment« when perfor-

ming. How does one avoid getting ahead of oneself, or acting only from memory? How

does one avoid becoming overly self-conscious or analytical when moving or acting

onstage? : To help overcome these difficulties, and to re-explore basic principles

and techniques of performance, Rob List has developed a special workshop method,

combining techniques from drawing, movement and performance. : Rob List has

been internationally active since beginning his work in the American avant-garde in

the 1980s. He has collaborated and worked with Meredith Monk, La Mama, and at the

Kitchen in New York, among others. Additionally, he was artistic director of the Mime

Opleiding in Amsterdam and founder and co-director of the Institute for New Drama-

turgy. Since 2002, he has been working with young dancers, mimes, visual artists and

filmmakers in an ever-changing ensemble called OZU. »In my work I want to create an

elementary theater removed of all psychological elements, a performance space which

evokes a more basic moment in human communication – one without text, characters,

or socially coded gestures – and which affects the audience in an emotional way wi-

thout their quite being able to identify what is going on.« (R.L.)

With Julyen Hamilton [GB] For many years, Julyen Hamilton has been exploring the

principles and techniques of Instant Composition – creating and choreographing in

the moment. For him, improvisation is not simply an unstructured and random stream

of raw material, but rather a moment-by-moment composition. The performer finds

herself in a state of a complete physical and mental alertness and instant decision-

making – situated in time and space, but also present in a cultural, political, social

and emotional context. A particular emphasis is given to presence and stance. Julyen’s

comprehensive approach makes his work interesting and valuable for both dancers

and creators from other performing fields. Julyen Hamilton has worked as a dancer,

choreographer, poet and teacher for over 30 years, and is one of the most experienced

and inspirational teachers of performance improvisation currently active. He started

his career in London’s experimental dance scene of the 1970s, subsequently living

and working in Amsterdam. Since 1990 he has created more than 100 solo pieces, and

lives at present in Barcelona.

> The class will be in English >> Open to artists of all fields with an interest in performance >>> Open studio on Sunday, 3rd

June at 7pm >>>> For more, see www.julyenhamilton.com ___ Price: € 140 / red. € 110 / till 19 year old € 90

The master classes are intended particularly for dancers and other performers from dif-

ferent performing fields with a special interest in improvisation and performance. The

workshops will give a thematic view of the working and teaching methods of prominent

dancers, teachers and performers. As such, they will offer the possibility to explore and

research different movement techniques and performance methods over an extended

period, and to share and exchange knowledge. The series is scheduled to continue

throughout the year. Further workshops of the festival: www.fabrikpotsdam.de
