LIVING OUT THE GOSPEL ...

In a former parish, I was attending the music rehearsal for the Easter Vigil mass. In the midst of a piece that had an organ, trumpets, bass guitar, percussion, three acoustic guitars, and vocals, the director stopped the piece because one of the guitarists had played a B flat, not the B that the composer wrote. I remember being incredulous that he heard such a slight difference with all that music going on. Another time I was hunt-ing partridge in northern Maine. The driver, who was supposed to scan his side of the road and keep us safely upon the road, three times point-

ed out birds in the woods on my side that I missed. In each case, the individual had trained themselves focus their attention. The conductor

could hear slight differences, the driver noticed silhouettes or movement that did not belong. I was caught up in the big picture, the total sound, the absence of a bird on the road, the beautiful tangle of branches and leaves. When Jesus asks us to enter through the “narrow door” to the Kingdom, he is challenging us to narrow our focus. Are we so caught up with taking in all the distractions in our lives that we do not notice the presence of sin, the temptation to take a short cut in the moral life? In essence, Christ is asking us to narrow our vision so that only he appears in it. When we see a person, we see the presence of Christ in him or her. When we face a task or responsibility, we see the opportunity to build the kingdom of God. When we see adversity or hurt, we see the chance to unite our lives to the sacrifice of Jesus. Obviously, all of this takes practice, and the presence of guides to help us refine our skills. As we live out the Gospel this week, may we resist the urge to just go along with the crowd, to separate our lives into the sacred and the ordinary. Let us actively seek out the Lord, and see him in all things and all people. - Fr.Phi

POTHE ANNUAL PICNIC: KUDOS TO THE TEAM

I would like like to thank all POTHE parishoners and Knights of Co-lumbus who generously donated their time to organize and facilitate another successful and delicious PARISH PICNIC at St. Gregory’s on August 17th!! As I join the POTHE team this week it is that wonderful sense of teamwork and committment to God and our Parish ministries that truly excites me about taking on this position. -- Kim Palli

VACATION BIBLE CAMP was a fun, faith-filled and wonderful July week, with 22 young campers, 10 teen leaders and a strong adult leadership team, led by Coordinator Kelli Antonson of our parish. Our theme was Parachuting with the Angels featuring French Saint Catherine Labouré, who, on 19 July 1830, woke up after hearing the voice of a child calling her to the chapel, where she heard the Virgin Mary say to her, “God wishes to charge you with a mission.

On 27 November 1830 Catherine reported that the Blessed Mother returned during evening meditations. Around the margin of the frame appeared the French words “Ô Marie, conçue sans péché, priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous (“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee”). The Miraculous Medal design was executed by Adrien Vachette based on Saint Catherine Labouré’s visions.

THIS WEEK’S THEME: ‘Am I able to accept correction?’

SCRIPTURE BACKGROUND: [Gospel of Luke 13:22-30]

In his letter, St. Paul explains to the Hebrews why we should be happy when someone who loves us corrects us (and this includes God). It means that we are loved and that we will be a better person if we accept to be corrected and learn from it. God loves a humble heart which is necessary to accept correction. Humble people know that they are not more important than others; they are not perfect and can always learn to be more virtuous; they accept help from God and others; they always seek ways to be a more faithful person to God and others.

WE PRAY: “God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I will accept righteous correction from you and those who love me. I understand that I will be a better person for it. Thy will be done. Our Father, who art in heaven…”

WE TALK: Discuss the virtue of humility. Does humility mean that we do not have self-dignity and acceptance? What does it mean to me? Have I practiced humility before? Who is a humble person in my life? How do I grow the virtue of HUMILITY? Is receiving the sacrament of Confession a way to become more humble?

WE ACT: Each of us will find a way to exercise or practice the virtue of humility this week.Go to pothe.formed.org to register for a FREE digital subscription.

CATHOLIC APPEALI want to thank the parishioners who have made their gift or pledge to the Catholic Appeal. Your support helps the Diocese to continue the work of Jesus in our state. The Parish of the Holy Eucharist benefits directly from this support. As of August 15th, only 320 families have participated in the Appeal, about 9% of our parish. If we can receive another 230 gifts, we will achieve our goal of 25% participation and should easily raise the $63,000 to go over our parish responsibility. Please take some time to prayerfully discern what your family can do to show leadership to the Diocese and to help the Church’s beacon to burn brightly in our diocese. Pledge envelopes are available at the entrances of each church. If you have any questions, please talk with Fr. Phil.

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTERAllow Jesus to transform your marriage and show you how to truly love your spouse by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Weekends are Sep 14-15, 2019 in Medway, MA and Oct 18-20, 2019 in LACONIA, NH. For more information, call Ste-phen & Michelle O’Leary at 800-710-9963 or visit them at https://wwmema.org

JOIN LECTIO DIVINA PRAYER GROUPThursdays at Holy Martys, 6:30-8pm Lectio Divina, pronounced LEK-tsea-ho di-VEEN-ah, is a latin term meaning “divine reading” and is a Catholic meditative form of prayer. The process is a slow, reflective praying of the Scriptures which enables the Word of God, to unify us with God... to be a fruitful source for growing our relationship with Him.

IGNATIAN PRAYER SERIES“Lord, Teach Me To Pray” (LTMTP) is a three-part prayer series, rooted in Ignatian spirituality and designed to help women and men learn how to pray. Fall sessions for women begin the first week of September. Contact Elizabeth at 207-577-4285 for more information and to register.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAULFor the past seven years we have asked for help to supply those less fortunate with a backpack for school. The project began as I was behind a school bus that was unloading children. As I watched, we saw those with backpacks gathering to walk together and those without backpacks went off alone! WOW!! Historically, we have distributed your generous donations through the Falmouth and Cumberland food pantries as they have lists of those in need. You have been very generous over the years, whether donating one or many backpacks. They add up!! Please leave them in the narthex at Holy Martyrs, we will do the rest! Thank you and God Bless! - Jack Mullin
