It’s about fun.

Urban Adventure took a walk on the wild side in 2013. By expanding our partnership with the National Sports Center for the Disabled we were able to add new activities for Urban Adventure. Our campers who use wheelchairs were able to climb a mountain, sail a sea (okay, a reservoir) and raft some serious whitewater. That’s adventure! That’s fun!

It’s about progress.

Families of young children with special needs came to Adam’s Camp so that their child could experience intensive therapy provided by a multidisciplinary team, in addition to great family support. This year, Early Start added a new tune-up weekend. Held at Snow Mountain Ranch months after the original camp week, this addition to the program brought the teams back together so that progress could be measured, goals revised and new strategies developed.

It’s about independence.

Adventure Camp participants enjoyed swimming, rafting, dancing and more activities while experiencing what for many, was their first time away from home and family. This year we added a 6th week, held in the fall, giving campers the opportunity to reconnect over new activities. And we held a meet-up weekend in the spring in partnership with Saddle Up! Foundation. These youth and young adults tried new things, built friendships and demonstrated courage, all leading to growth in independence.

It’s about hope.

Pathfinder and Trailblazer Therapy Camps continued to feature our signature of 5-5-5 therapy model of 5 pediatric therapists working with 5 children over 5 consecutive days, while providing a wonderful sibling program as well as education, support and respite for parents over 5 weeks this year. Hope was abundant during our new Down syndrome week of therapy camp, held in conjunction with the National Down Syndrome Congress’ annual convention, where 27 families found community, progress and hopes fulfilled during this special week.

It’s not too soon to start planning for 2014! Applications opened on November 5. Visit adamscamp.org to check it out and apply today. Scholarships are available and early application discounts may apply.

Adam’s Camp couldn’t do all we do without the support of our volunteers. While we are fortunate to have volunteer help year-round, it’s those who donate a full week or more at camp who truly make our programs possible. Thank you to our 2013 program volunteers:

Adam’s Camp New Hampshire 2014!

ALASKA

Part of the Adam’s Camp vision is “Sharing our approach as a model for others throughout the community of people with special needs.” We are doing this by helping people in different parts of the country establish an Adam’s Camp program in their area.

This summer Adam’s Camp Alaska was launched thanks to the incredible work of three Adam’s Camp families who live in Anchorage. The program was a wonderful success serving 10 Alaska families from all over the state.

This coming summer we will be launching a new Adam’s Camp in Lincoln, New Hampshire.

Lincoln is located in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire just two hours north of Boston and is home to the Loon Mountain ski area and also New England Disabled Sports. The New Hampshire program will complement Adam’s Camp Nantucket now it its 6th year and provide a convenient location for families anywhere in the New England area. Our thanks to the wonderful Board of Adam’s Camp New England who will oversee both the Nantucket and New Hampshire programs.

Dates for the New Hampshire program will be set in the next few weeks. As with all Adam’s Camp programs, registration will be online through the Adam’s Camp website, www.adamscamp.org.

Adam’s Camp launched Adam’s Camp Advocates in January of this year with a kick-off party and the energy is still flowing! This group was formed so that anybody who would like to lend their skills and hands to support the children, youth and families of Adam’s Camp has a way to do so. This group of individuals and families leads and participates in projects that provide awareness, program support, and fundraising for Adam’s Camp, exemplifying the motto, “Your Strength for Our Campers.”

Your Strength for Our Campers - Adam’s Camp Advocates

* Mary Beth Daubenspeck and Jeff and Dani McGregor organized an anniversary celebration at Big Choice Brewing Company as a fundraiser for Adam’s Camp and raised over $2100!

* Craig, Nancy and Tasha Jorgensen hosted a party for Adam’s Camp at their home and raised over $500 while telling more people all about Adam’s Camp.

* Jennifer and Alex Roitz hosted a pre-camp party for families attending the same week of camp at Great Play of Highlands Ranch in June. What a great way to build a team atmosphere before camp - thanks Alex and Jennifer! Thank you Great Play for donating the party and making sure everybody had a great time!

* Spreading the Word - so many advocates have helped to spread the word about the great programs and volunteer opportunities we offer.

After winning the Senior British Open and the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship, Mark Wiebe brought his winning ways to the eighth annual Adam’s Camp Classic tournament on September 30th. Colorado Golf Club, home to this year’s Solheim Cup, was again the venue for this successful outing to benefit our programs. The weather created a perfect weekend for our top level sponsors including Paintbrush Title Sponsor -Retirement Plan and Investment Providers (Fidelity Investments, Oppenheimer Funds, Nuveen Investments, Great West Financial, Janus and Victory Capital Management) and Ponderosa Pine Sponsors (Accuvant and Trend Micro) to enjoy a round of golf on Sunday, a night in one of the lovely Colorado Golf Club cottages, and participation in the tournament on Monday. Dining Hall sponsors Buckley Powder, FirstBank and UMB Bank joined us on tournament

Champion Mark Wiebe Hosts Successful Tournament #8!day to enjoy lunch donated by Noodles & Company, 18 holes of glorious golf, and a dinner worthy of 132 tired golfer’s efforts on the course. Mark and Gunnar Wiebe cruised the course and took shots for our golfers, boosting the scores for some of the foursomes. Thank you to Jim and Veronica Brennan who took pictures throughout the day. We were thrilled to once again welcome WB2’s Tom Green as our MC as he and Mark distributed prizes and led the silent auction, assisted by camp namesake Adam Horney. We are so grateful to Jeff DePasse for chairing this event for the second year, Bill Harmon for securing our Title Sponsors, and our great golf committee including Jane Buckley, Dean Flora, Sharon Link, Paige Schuster and Clay Waller for making this our most successful tournament to date. Thanks to their hard work and the support of our loyal players, this tournament raised over $160,000 for Adam’s Camp!

Each year, we carefully review the evaluations completed by our families which are supported by their comments. Here are the stories AND the statistics that encourage us each day!

“Adam’s Camp changed our lives, the ideas presented and the skills Ethan learned catapulted us into a year of phenomenal growth” –Therapy Family

“We were so impressed by the program at Adam’s Camp! Our daughter …..was crawling about 98% of the time. By the end of the week at Adam’s Camp… she was walking everywhere! She was walking about 98% of the time and with such confidence in her steps too! The therapists were so adept at quickly figuring out her personality and what worked for her in just five days of intensive therapy! … She also quickly learned new signs to help her with non-verbal communication! Thank you, Adam’s Camp! We would recommend this program to anyone with a child with developmental delays.” – Early Start Family

“We share the strategies and ideas with our child’s school and therapy teams and it’s critical to her care! “ – Therapy Family

97% of the siblings enjoyed the sibling program

“The siblings get to be with other siblings and have their own ‘bond’. They get to develop a better sense as to why their sibling with special needs is special; yet, they also realize and learn that they too are special.” – Therapy Family

93% of our families reported enjoying the respite during camp

“Camp has something for the entire family; Parents get what they need (respite), siblings get what they need (summer camp activities) and camper gets what she needs (therapy and camp activities). It is an entire family experience and is our ONLY vacation opportunity as a family per year, so we need everyone to have fun.” – Therapy Family

73% of Adventure Campers reported gaining skills to develop greater independence

“For us Adam’s Camp has paved a road to independence that is not available through other routes. By going through the levels of camp scenarios, the kids get comfortable with the facility, the activities, the group situations, and then they build toward greater independence in accessing the camp experience. It is amazing to watch the kids grow, learn, socialize, and to bask in acceptance and self-reliance. Jake comes home every year with new skills, new ideas, new sayings, and a great positive outlook.” – Adventure Camp Family

95% of the Adventure Camp participants reported having as much or more fun than they expected

“Camp is very fun. Lots of activities and lots of friends. Everyone is very welcoming and make you feel safe.” “The best week of the year for my daughter!.” – Adventure Camper and Parent

“Go to Adam’s Camp!! Do not pass go, do not collect $200!!!!!!! I could not recommend this program more

highly to anyone who has a special needs child.”

Donor: Chris ChapmanAs soon as Chris and Dawn Chapman brought their daughter Chloe to Adam’s Camp, they began to look for ways to give back! Chris really stepped up in support of our golf tournament both last year and this year by becoming a Camper Sponsor, purchasing a foursome, donating a generous credit for a garage door through his company, One Clear Choice Garage Doors, and by sponsoring our hole in one prize! Thanks for your support and encouragement, Chris!

Staff: Colleen MuellerColleen has been an enthusiastic Music Therapist for Adam’s Camp for the past 3 years and has proven to be a great team leader and innovative program planner for our newly created Early Start follow up program. Thanks, Colleen, for making

Adam’s Camp better through your work with our kids!

Volunteer: Nicole BustamanteNicole is one of those very special volunteers who calls to ask US what she can do! She not only volunteers for camp herself, but offered to put together a group of students from Metro to volunteer for our Spring Early Start session. Nicole provided volunteers, and food as well! Thanks, Nicole, for being a model volunteer for Adam’s Camp.

The Olsen Family

Family: The Olsen FamilyJulia and Adam Olsen have their hands full with 4 young children, including spunky Brooklyn who has Down syndrome. In spite of their busy schedules, Julia has always taken time to help us out by willingly representing Adam’s Camp in the community. This family is a great example of folks who give as much as they get from Adam’s Camp. Thanks, Adam and Julia!

We are honored to be recognizing a family who has contributed in many ways to Adam’s Camp at our annual recognition dinner on November 3rd. Bill, Jodi, camper Will, Layton and Amaya have been members of the Adam’s Camp family for over 10 years. After Will participated in our Early Start program, the Harmons never looked back! They have been “Adam’s Campers” every year since, and have gone over and above in supporting Adam’s Camp and spreading the word about our programs. Bill has

served on our Board for 7 years, and as Board President for 4 years. Jodi is a tireless advocate for Adam’s Camp in the community. Super siblings Layton and Amaya join special camper Will in rounding out this fun, generous, dynamic family. We love you all!

To the family of Rebecca Snyder, our enthu-siastic and well loved Adventure Camper who left this life this past summer. We will miss Rebecca and her great camper spirit and friendship.

Our Hearts Go Out...

We are so very sorry for the loss of these very special Adam’s Campers.

To the family of sweet Early Start camper Kerry Kavanagh. Kerry lost her battle with meningitis at 3 years of age.

Lace up those high-tops and get ready for our annual family fundraiser, Hoops for Hope on April 13, 2014! This year’s event was such a hit that we are joining Partners in Pediatrics to create an even better event next year. New for 2014 is the creation of BOTH teams by our able staff of volunteers and supporters.

Doors at Cherry Creek High School will open at 12, in time for you to grab lunch at the snack bar. The event, MC’d by KBCO’s Bret Saunders, will be filled with fun play and many antics as well as a special halftime show. Once again, one of our team coaches will be Bill Hanzlik.

If you know of a local celebrity who might be interested in playing, please contact Sarah at 303-563-8290, ext 13 or [email protected]. We expect to have 2 star-studded teams for you to enjoy! Partners in Pediatrics physician and Adam’s Camp board member Nancy Lataitis, MD and Adam’s Camp volunteer Jamie Bailey are chairing this event.
