When the Delhi rapevictim and her malefriend were lying onthe road in a pool of

blood, no passersby stopped andhelped them, it was reported.How would anybody help in asystem where Good Samaritansbecome victims themselves?

Here is a glaring case thatshows what a do-gooder gets forintervening on behalf of a woman.A youth who objected to the teas-ing of a young woman by two ruf-fians was clubbed to death inAugust last. The girl escapedunhurt. Her family never both-ered to at least empathise with theboy’s family. The MLA ducked thescene, the corporator turned hisface away, and finally, it was onlythe local police inspector who

gave financial support when theyouth was in hospital and laterarranged for his funeral.

The story of Imran Ali Khan,26, will make every citizen bow hishead in shame. Imran and hisfriend, Asif, were riding homefrom Golconda Qila after work. AtLanger House, Imran, a conscien-tious youth, was outraged at see-ing a hapless girl being harassed inpublic by three men on a scooter.Imran asked the trio to stop it andgo their way. The three turned theirire on the youth and closed in onhim. Seeing the scene turning vio-lent, locals gathered and separatedthe two. Imran and his friendresumed their journey. But the triofollowed the youths, overtookthem and killed Imran. His friendescaped with minor injuries.

The forlorn family — an agedfather and mother, a young sisterand 12-year-old brother — are

left to fend for themselves. “TheOwaisis who talk hatred havenot raised a finger for the poorfamily of their own community,”pointed out a provision storeowner, referring to the incident.

When Postnoon revisited thefamily at Karvan in Towli Masjid

area on Tuesday, the mother,Bismilla Begum, was still dazedby the tragedy. “Nahi,” saidBegum, “Koi nahi aaya. Ek ladki kiabroo bachane mein mera ladla maaragaya. Koi nahi poocha.”

Imran’s father is sick andelderly and the children are too

young to bear the burden of thefamily. “They (MLA, Muslimleaders, local MIM leaders, rela-tives) all came for a few days andmade statements.” But they alldisappeared, leaving the familyto fend for themselves. The onlykindness they received was fromthe inspector of Kulsumpura sta-tion, Karan Kumar Singh, whohelped the family in their hour ofneed. “He was so kind,” said themother. A social worker, MohdAbdul Razzak, was another whohelped them get records of theyouth’s death and submittedthem for the chief minister’srelief fund. All others, includingthe MIM MLA Muqtada Khan,disappeared. “What can we do inthis matter?” was the query ofthe MLA when asked for help.Postnoon’s efforts to talk to theMLA proved futile as he pleadedhe was not in the City.

The town planning (TP)department, which,until now, has been run-ning with only 86

employees, will be getting 240new employees. But the ques-tion many raise is: Will it everhappen?

There is little doubt that thedepartment needs more hands.While the corporation sought atleast 400 employees for variousjobs as against the estimatedrequirement of 540, it sanc-tioned 240. The new employeeswould be for head office as wellas zonal offices. “It is half therequired strength, but will dofor now,” said a senior official.

Currently, each assistant cityplanner (ACP), who should betaking care of one circle is han-dling at least three to four cir-cles. It is believed that some ofthe officials who are holdingparticular positions would bepromoted. For instance, sectionofficers may be promoted toACP and serve at zonal level.

But many sceptics believe

that the appointments will notcome through because thoughthe department bemoans lack ofhands outwardly, they secretlydo not want manpower becausethat would mean difficult man-agement.

“I do not think the appoint-ment would come through.

There are various provisionswherein the corporation couldhave brought in employees ondeputation from other depart-ments to GHMC. The depart-ment could also outsource cer-tain work. They will not do thisbecause it would mean end oftheir ‘privileges’,” said a critic.

the legislators, are meeting inHyderabad at an emergencyconference to discuss the pointsthey have to make to thePresident. Since the YSRC dele-gation, consisting of party legis-lators and other senior leader,has secured an appointmentwith the President todayevening, the emergency meetingwas being held to finalise theirstrategy. Is history going to repeat itself? Itseems like it. One of the plans ofCongress leaders opposed to thebifurcation of the State is to resort

to the same strategy they adopted inDecember 2009 when the then UnionHome Minister P Chidambaram offi-cially announced the creation of a sepa-rate T-state. The MLAs from these tworegions cutting across party lines ten-dered their resignations en masse andsucceeded in forcing the Centre toretract its statement on creation of theseparate state.

Taking the heat to another level, asection of Congress leaders fromAndhra region (ministers and MLAs)have already said that they will resignfrom their posts if the Centre wentahead with the decision of creating aseparate Telangana state.

“We will not allow the governmentto divide the State at any cost. We havebeen demanding that the UPA govern-ment keep the State united. If it wentahead with the decision of dividing theState, I will immediately resign frommy MLA post,” Congress MLA Jogi

Ramesh told Postnoon. A couple of days ago, erstwhile PRP

leader and present State cabinet minis-ter Srinivasa Rao made a similar state-ment and warned the Congress highcommand that he would resign fromhis post if the Telangana state was creat-ed. YSR derived publicityout of Arogyasri without rendering any ben-efit to the poor, he charged reiterating thathis party was committed to implementing ahealth insurance scheme for the poor.

The henchmen of the people at the helmof affairs misappropriated the Indirammahousing bills, Naidu alleged. Stating that theDSC Teachers Recruitment Tests will be con-ducted every year once his party takes over,he assured that he would give top priority toeducation and employment. “NTR SrujalaSravanthi scheme will be implemented toprovide drinking water to every village tofind a lasting solution to the drinking waterwoes of the people across the State, afterreturning to power,” he said.

steps to bring the people ofTelangana jailed in the Gulf coun-tries illegally, back to India. Theyalso demanded that these peopleshould be provided job security.

Party MLAs Jupalli Krishna Raoand Pocharam Srinivas Reddy led agroup of MLAs, who met the chiefminister in the Secretariat onTuesday and submitted a memoran-dum on the issue.

They said they requested thegovernment to provide interest freeloans of `2 to 3 lakh to those withtechnical skills and ensure employ-ment. They said about 47,000 peoplewere jailed in the Gulf countries andparticularly in Emirates as theirvisas had expired. Of these, theysaid, around 22,000 were from theTelangana region. These unfortu-nate people had gone to the Gulfcountries for livelihood, borrowinglakhs of rupees and knew that theywere cheated by agents after land-ing there. NSS

Following the governor-authorised amendment tothe RTI Act of 2005, RTIactivists from the City

and other parts of the State havecome together and decided torepresent to the governmentseeking an explanation for theamendment.

The amendment dispenseswith the need for the PIO to bepresent in case of a hearing of anRTI. “An applicant takes all thetrouble to get information on anurgent matter because it is notforthcoming through normalchannels. Removing the manda-tory presence of the PIO makes amockery of the Act,” said anactivist.

decision. A senior RTI activistsays, “Even Commissioner JannatHussain was not happy with thedevelopment and they conveneda meeting on January 13 to discuss

this issue. I think they too are rep-resenting a memorandum seekingclarification.”

Other RTI activists allege thatit is but only the beginning of theState government’s silent sup-pression of the RTI Act.

“The fact that this move wasdone in the dark and the chiefsecretary is playing hard to get isjust the beginning. The State gov-ernment is least bothered aboutRTI despite dozens of activistsbeing killed or assaulted in thelast two years. They are trying tosubdue the Act so much so thatthe information commissionerwill be left to do nothing,” saysRaoji Brahmanand, a senior RTIactivist from Guntur.

Whether the chief secretarywill take forward the appeal orwhether the City and State willwitness a full scale RTI activistdharna is yet to be seen. Asusual, Commissioner JannatHussain was unavailable forcomment.

Even as the mayor is bent upon con-ducting the General Body Meetingin February, the Opposition is not

ready to relent to its demand to conductit in this month.

In December, when the meeting wascancelled at the eleventh hour by themayor, all the political parties includingCongress reacted swiftly, while TDP andBJP held separate dharnas. SingireddySrinivas Reddy, TDP floor leader gavenotice to the GHMC commissioner toconduct the meeting, without specificdate. Later, the party submitted a letter

demanding the meeting should be con-ducted on January 10.

Despite this, when there was noresponse from the mayor and the com-missioner, the TDP recently handed overa notice demanding the metting be con-ducted on January 23, signed by almostall the corporators. With the notice onthe mayor’s table, who has decided toconduct the meeting in February, is notready to give in to the opposition’sdemands. “We must take into considera-tion everyone. Discussions are on toconvince TDP leaders,” he says.

According to the sources, Mayor MdMajid Hussain is trying his best to con-vince the Opposition, particularly theTDP leadership, that it would better ifthe GHMC conducts its General BodyMeeting on February 6 or 7.

But the TDP is not willing to listen.The seriousness of its notice can bepointed out by the fact that it involvedmost of its corporators for this. “I am notready to take back the notice. It shouldbe conducted on that date only,” main-tains Singi Reddy.

However, it appears that Congressparty is also supporting the decision ofthe mayor. According to Deputy MayorG Raj Kumar, the mayor had alreadydiscussed this with him. “It is most like-ly that the general body will be conduct-ed in February. He has already dis-cussed this with me,” he said.

Over half of the corporateworkforce is likely to makeyearly pledges for the NewYear, and interestingly, job andfinance rule the list of resolu-tions this year, unlike the last,when health-related resolutionssuch as weight loss and quittingthe habits of smoking or drink-ing, reigned on their priorities,highlights a month-long surveyconducted by the AssochamSocial Development Found-ation (ASDF) between Novem-ber and December, to gauge theplans and goals set by corpo-rates as they look forward tousher in the New Year.

“Making a resolution onNew Year eve is a universal actreflecting upon the variouschanges people want to make inthe forthcoming year,” said DSRawat, secretary general ofAssocham, while releasing thechamber survey.

“The whole idea is to reducestress and frustrations in life,

thereby focusing on improvingrelationships, health, career andother things,” said Rawat.“Considering that globally theeconomy has been in the dol-drums for some time now, peo-ple are retooling their yearlypledges, thereby making morefinancial resolutions to fit thecurrent times.”

Assocham representativesinteracted with about 750 peo-ple (almost equal number ofmales and females) includingchairmen, chief executive offi-cers (CEOs), directors and man-aging directors (MDs) of vari-ous organisations in thedomains of pharma, banking,financial services and insurance(BFSI), auto, hospitality, fastmoving consumer goods(FMCG), manufacturing, ener-gy and infrastructure sectors inabout 15 cities (50 in each city) –

Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chan-digarh, Chennai, Dehradun,Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad,Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata,Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpurand Pune.

About 600 of the total 750respondents, ie about 80 percent of the respondents, togeth-er in all the cities, said they haveplans to set New Year resolutions.

About 110 of the rest saidthey are not going to make anyresolutions as they have notbeen able to achieve the onesthey had set previously, and theremaining said they are toobusy with their lives and arecontent as they have nothingmore to achieve.

Interestingly, women areahead of their counterparts inmaking different resolutions aswomen constituted about 55

per cent of those who acknowl-edged setting up of goals for theNew Year.

Of those who were likely tomake a resolution, about 65 percent, ie 390 of the 600, plannedto make finance related resolu-tions for the New Year, whichincluded reduced spending,paying off the dues, expandingthe investment portfolio andbuilding an emergency fund,owing to a slump in the jobmarket.

While about 60 of theremaining said they would liketo make a shift in their career bypursuing higher studies orchanging their job for bettergrowth in the next year, about150 of the remaining said theywould be making health relatedNew Year resolutions to becomemore physically fit, according tothe Assocham survey.

About 90 per cent of therespondents who had plannedto make a resolution for 2013said they make New Year resolutions each year. Majorityof them said though they takeyearly pledges, they don’t evensee it through for a month. Justabout two per cent of therespondents said they stickwith all the resolutions theymake each year.

French forces interveningin Mali are facing a deter-mined, experienced andwell-armed foe and will

not be able to quickly count onthe backing of an organisedAfrican ground force, analystssaid.

France launched airstrikeson Friday to back the Malianarmy in an operation againstIslamist rebels who had seizedthe north of the country andwere threatening to advance onthe capital Bamako.

President Francois Hollandesaid the move was necessary toprotect France's 6,000 citizens inthe former colony and preventMali's vast desert north frombecoming a haven from whichextremists could strike atEurope.

French troops were arrivingin Mali, with newspaper LeMonde reporting that the initialdeployment of 550 soldierswould be boosted to 2,500.

France announced quickgains in eastern Mali in theoffensive, driving the Islamistsfrom key positions, but therebels launched a counter-offen-sive and seized control of atown in the government-heldsouth.

Sources in the French presi-dency admitted to being sur-prised at how well-equipped,

armed and co-ordinated therebels proved. "These are notnovices, they have a good tacti-cal sense, enjoy very strongmobility with 4x4s and havesurface-to-air weapons sys-tems," French defence expertPascal Le Pautremat said.

French Rafale fighter jetsstruck bases used by Al-Qaeda-linked fighters in Gao andKidal, two of the main towns innorthern Mali, and rebel stock-piles of munitions and fuel nearKidal, a stronghold of rebelgroup Ansar Dine (Defenders ofthe Faith).

"Rear bases and logisticalpoints must be hit," LePautremat said. "But we can'tbelieve that victory is a given bysticking to the destruction ofmilitary targets. It will be neces-sary to occupy the ground in thelong run, so to deploy men andresources."

Analysts said France'sinvolvement could be over fair-ly quickly if the only objective isto stop the Islamists' advanceinto the south.

But if the goal is to com-pletely retake control of thenorth, France could be lookingat a "long-term operation" inMali, said Bruno Tertrais of theParis-based Foundation forStrategic Research. Tertrais saidofficials had already indicatedthat French forces could be infor the long haul.

"When you say from the out-set that it will last 'as long as ittakes', that means you are readyfor a long-term commitment ifnecessary," he said.

France will be hoping tolimit the involvement of itstroops by putting the bulk of theon-the-ground burden on aplanned west African interven-tion force. The force, authorisedby the UN Security Council, hasstarted to take shape, withNigeria leading the interventionand providing around 600 sol-diers. Burkina Faso, Niger,Senegal and Togo have allpledged about 500 troops. Beninand Ghana have also promisedto contribute soldiers.

Still, experts said that if thesituation on the ground pro-gresses rapidly, it may alreadybe too late for an African forceto play an effective role. "It willbe difficult for these battalionsto be operational before at leastthree months," said GeneralJean-Paul Thonier, who com-manded the EU's Artemis mis-sion in the Democratic Republicof Congo in 2003. And in March last year,an officer who had attend-ed several training courseswith the US military,Captain Amadou Sanago,

led a coup against theMalian government,prompting the US to sus-pend its security assistance.

TOKYO: Japan’s two biggestairlines on Wednesdaygrounded all theirDreamliners in the most seri-ous blow yet to Boeing’s trou-bled next-generation modelafter an ANA flight wasforced into an emergencylanding.

The 787 Dreamliner hassuffered more than a week ofbad news that has promptedinvestigations by avia-tion regulators inJapan and the UnitedStates, although Boeinginsists the plane is safe.

All Nippon Airwayssaid a battery problemtriggered a cockpit errormessage that forced the

pilots to land the plane insouthwestern Japan.

Both ANA and its rivalJapan Airlines —whichtogether are among biggestcustomers for the Dreamliner—said they would groundtheir entire 787 fleets pendingsafety checks, according tomultiple media reports. ANAhas 17 Dreamliners in opera-tion and JAL has seven.

“We recognise it is a seri-ous incident that could leadto a serious accident,” saidTransport Minister AkihiroOta said, according to nation-al broadcaster NHK. Ota saidhe was launching an investi-gation and had dispatchedaviation bureau officials.

ANA said 129 passengersand eight crew were on boardthe flight, which was headedfrom Ube in the far west toTokyo when it diverted mid-flight to an airport inTakamatsu, on Japan’s fourthlargest island of Shikoku.

Police reported several“slight injuries” such asscratches after those aboardevacuated the plane via emer-gency chutes at Takamatsu,as several airport fire trucksdeployed on the ground.

ANA would not confirmJapanese media reports that

smoke was seen inside thecockpit, but one passen-

ger was quoted bybroadcaster NHK as

saying he “smelled some-thing strange” after take-offand feared the plane wasgoing to crash.

Last week, there was abattery fire and smoke on anempty Dreamliner flightoperated by JAL on theground in the US city ofBoston. JAL said the smoke

on that flight was traced to afire from the battery used forthe Dreamliner’s auxiliarypower unit, located at therear of the plane.

Boeing said it was awareof the incident in Takamatsu.“We will be working with ourcustomers and the appropri-ate regulatory agencies,” thecompany said in a statement.

The high-profile incidentsover the past week are the lat-est issues to dog the aircraft,after production glitches

delayed delivery of the firstplane to ANA by three yearsto 2011. ANA and JAL have acombined 100-plus planeseither already delivered or onorder, in deals worth billionsof dollars for Boeing.

Problems bloomed lastweek with the fire on the JALflight after it had landed inBoston from Tokyo. That inci-dent was followed by a fuelleak on another JALDreamliner, also in Boston.

A cracked cockpit win-dow then forced the cancella-tion of a Dreamliner flight inJapan before a JAL-operatedplane suffered a fuel spill onSunday at Tokyo’s NaritaAirport.

On Friday US regulatorsannounced an in-depth safetyreview of the 787, which wasfollowed on Monday by theannouncement of a probe inJapan. But Boeing insists thatit has “complete confidence”in the plane.

Boeing, which outsourcedmuch of the production toJapanese and other contrac-tors, says the plane’s impres-sive fuel efficiency representsa revolution in aircraftdesign. NEW YORK: PakistanForeign Minister HinaRabbani Khar accusedIndia of engaging in"war-mongering" inthe aftermath of clash-es and killing of twoIndian soldiers at theLine of Control (LoC).

Khar also saidPakistan is "deeply dis-appointed" to hearstatements from Indiathat are "upping the ante" andclaimed her government is creat-ing a "precedence" of not followingwar-mongering.

India, Pakistan and the SouthAsian region cannot afford a con-flict between the two countriesand the doors of dialogue have toremain open, she said, adding hergovernment wants the dialogueprocess to be "uninterrupted anduninterruptible."

WASHINGTON: After asharp slowdown pushingdown its projected growth to5.4 percent in the fiscal yearending March 2013, the WorldBank expects India to grow at6.4 percent this year, rising to7.3 percent by 2015.

The slowdown in India,South Asia's largest economy,also weakened growth in theregion to an estimated 5.4 percent, said the World Bank's lat-est Global Economic Prospects.

Regional GDP is projectedto grow by 5.7 percent in the2013 calendar year, and by 6.4percent and 6.7 percent in 2014and 2015, respectively, drivenby policy reforms in India,

stronger investment activity,normal agricultural produc-tion, and improvement inexport demand.

Citing “people familiarwith the situation,” theJournal said that orders foriPhone 5 screens have beenhalved, while the the ordersfor other parts were alsoreduced.

The Journal pointed toincreased competition fromSamsung and other Androiddevice manufacturers asSamsung emerged as thebiggest phone maker of 2012,surpassing Nokia for the firsttime in more than 14 years.

The sharp decline in thedemand for iPhone screencould have something to dowith lacklusture demand forthe new iPod Touch, that ispriced higher than previousgenerations. The new Touchhas the same screen size andthe hike in its price had putoff a lot of people from buy-ing the device. full. He showed he can whip up the fervour of divisionbased on religion, trying to crush that feeling of oneness

that is one of the prime pillars upon which this nation wasenvisaged, though which over the years has

taken a severe beating and looks very shaky, and the recentrant of our leader seems to have helped in shaking it fur-ther. His claims were very tall and insulting to this nationthat comprises not just him and his ilk, but many an Indianfrom a different religion, caste and economic background.The voices in response from the hundreds he addressed tothe poison he spewed were of faith and belief, but now heclaims the image of the man in the incriminating video ishis, but the voice isn’t. Now to those hundreds who werethere and to the thousands who were not, what has he tosay? That he did not mean them? 14HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTSDisgraced cyclist has talked openly over his use of performance-enhanc-ing drugs, according to Oprah Winfrey. How does that make him clean?What’s the point of it now? This comes too late; and that your miraculousstory won’t keep you in good stead.

There is much tensionin the air since thePakistani cross-borderraid at the Line ofControl (LoC) killed

two Indian soldiers. Media isfull of emotionally-chargedstatements. A bunch of newsanchors have literally declaredwar on Pakistan and calls fromthe likes of Sushma Swaraj tobring “10 Pakistani heads” onlyadd to the existing tensions.

Calls by a section of mediafor surgical strikes and warmake it sound like a cakewalk.Pakistan military is no pushoverand is competent enough to giveus a bloody nose if any hastily-planned cross-border adventureis initiated.

Their forces are well-entrenched and are trained tostave off attacks from its easternneighbour. American militaryaid in return for support role inthe ‘war on terror’ has addedsome lethal firepower toPakistan’s forces — not to men-tion the massive supply of mili-tary hardware it keeps receivingfrom China.

There is no doubt thatIndian armed forces enjoynumerical superiority and pos-sess better equipment.

However, there is no guaranteeof keeping the battles theatre-specific and short of the thresh-old that would provoke use ofnuclear weapons.

More than anyone else (evenmore that news anchors whodeliver what ‘THE NATIONWANTS TO KNOW’ at top deci-bel) it is the generals of Indiaand Pakistan who desperatelyneed a war.

The image of Pakistan’s mil-itary has taken a serious beatingin the last few years. AnAmerican SEAL team sneakedinto their territory and bumpedof Osama bin Laden andwaltzed out before GHQ bossesin Rawalpindi could bat an eye-lid. CIA drones operate inPakistani airspace with impuni-ty. Death of civilians whendrone strikes go wrong has cre-ated a strong public resentmentagainst the government and the‘incompetent’ military.

Several incidents of militarybases being targeted with easeby militants have caused thesecurity establishment to losetheir face. The military is alsolosing hundreds of soldiers inbattles with Islamic militants —a situation into which it wasarm-twisted by Uncle Sam.They are desperate for a diver-sion; something that wouldrepose the faith of public inthem as defenders of Pakistan;and nothing like a war to getthis done.

Their Indian counterpartsare much better off in terms ofinternal security. However, theuniform has lost much sheenafter the Kargil conflict —thanks to scams involving high-ranking officials. From corrup-tion in supply of rations to ille-gal sale of military land, a seriesof scams have seen generalsbeing indicted and cashiered.

The birth certificate contro-versy involving the previousarmy chief saw some seriouslows in civilian-military rela-tions. General VK Singh’s out-bursts about the shabby state ofIndia’s military preparedness,quality of ammunition (and lackof it) and offer of bribes havecaused the military’s image tohit a nadir. Therefore, the toughtalk and pressure for cross-bor-der strikes are only natural.

The LoC ceasefire that hasbeen in place from 2003 has sur-vived relatively unscatheddespite several attempts byhawks among state and non-state actors on both sides of theborder.

This has helped us divertresources for development andallowed us to stand tall whenthe rest of the world faced reces-sion. It also allowed securityforces to deploy more effectivelyand combat militancy in dis-turbed areas. A war wouldchange all of this.

The sanctity of our bordersmust be safeguarded throughappropriate mechanisms at eachlevel. A local incident shouldnot be allowed to hijack ournational agenda and push thecountries into a war that theycan’t afford to fight.

LONDON: A milkshake said tocontain "memory boosting"nutrients that reduce symptomsof early Alzheimer's went on salein Britain Monday.

The drink contains nutrientslike those found in breast milk,the Daily Mail reported.

The milkshake came after adecade of research into a formulasaid to improve the brain func-tion of people in the early stagesof the disease.

Taken 125 ml once a day, thedrink "Souvenaid" has ingredi-ents that work together to boost brain cells important formemory.

PARIS: Children who frequent-ly eat fast food are far likelier tohave severe asthma comparedto counterparts who tuck intofruit, a large international studypublished on Monday said.

Researchers asked nearlyhalf a million teenagers aged 13-14 and children aged six andseven about their eating habitsand whether in the previousyear they had experiencedwheezing, eczema or an itchy,blocked nose when they did nothave cold or flu.

The questionnaires were dis-tributed in scores of countries.

It marks the latest phase in along-running collaborative pro-

gramme, the InternationalStudy of Asthma and Allergiesin Childhood (ISAAC), whichwas launched in 1991.

The investigators filtered outfactors that could skew results,such as maternal smoking dur-ing pregnancy, sedentary

lifestyle and body-mass index,in order to focus purely on diet.

They found that fast foodwas the only food type thatcould be clearly linked to asth-ma severity.

Three or more weekly serv-ings of fast food were associatedwith a 39-per cent increase inthe risk of severe asthma amongteens and a 27-per cent increaseamong younger children.

It also added to the risk ofeczema and severe rhinitis.

In contrast, eating three ormore weekly portions of fruitled to a reduction in symptomseverity of between 11 and 14per cent, respectively.

The study, which appears inthe British Medical Associationjournal Thorax, noted that toprove an association is not toprove a cause — but argued thata further inquiry was clearlyneeded.

"If the associations (are)causal, then the findings havemajor public health significance,owing to the rising consump-tion of fast foods globally," theauthors said.

Previous research has foundthat the saturated and "trans"fatty acids trigger an inflamma-tory response from the immunesystem, the paper noted.

LONDON: Breastfeeding wal-lops ovarian cancer into submis-

sion, slashing the mother's risk ofthe disease by nearly two-thirds,

says a finding.Ovarian cancer is known as the

'silent killer' because symptoms formany sufferers, such as feeling

bloated, are non-specific andremains undiagnosed until the fair-

ly advanced stages.

Australian researchers conduct-ed a study involving 493 women

diagnosed with ovarian cancer andcompared them with 472 healthy

volunteers of similar age. Each wasasked how many children they had

and for how long they breastfedeach one, the American Journal of

Clinical Nutrition reports.The results showed those whobreastfed a child for at least 13

months were 63 per cent less likelyto develop a tumour than those

who did so for less than sevenmonths.

Mothers who had three childrenand breastfed for a total of 31

months or more were found to cuttheir chances of ovarian tumours by

91 per cent. This was compared tothose feeding naturally for a total of

under 10 months.

More than 6,000 patients in theUK are diagnosed with ovarian can-

cer annually, and the illnessaccounts for about five per cent of

cancer deaths in women.Breastfeeding is thought to

help as it delays ovulation, wheneggs are released and the ovaries

are exposed to high levels ofoestrogen-rich fluid.

PCB writes to ICC for increased security KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board has sought renewedsecurity measures for its women’s team when it participatesin the ICC World Cup in Mumbai from January 25.

The PCB today wrote a letter to the ICC asking it to shiftmatches of the Pakistan team to some other venue if thecricket’s governing body feels that the step is necessary inview of security issues. “Naturally, we are concerned with thesecurity of our players after the unfortunate incident involv-ing our hockey players in Mumbai,” PCB official NadeemSarwar told PTI. “We have written to the ICC and requestedthem to review all the security arrangements for our playersfor the World Cup. We just want to be sure about the safetyof our players when they play in the World Cup. This (relocatematches of the Pakistan team) is entirely up to the ICC andorganisers but we have given them this option,” Sarwaradded. PTI
