ModernismModernism was a transformation in the Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Modernism consists of a series of reforming movements in art, architecture, literature, music and applied arts. Modernism was characterized by a dramatic change of thought to improve the environment.
There was a trend of improving every aspect of life by involving science and technology into it.
Modernism brought about change in all aspects of life including philosophy, art and literature, with the aid of technology and experimentation. It led to progress in all the aspects of life by changing the approach mankind had of them.
Post-modernism
Postmodernism means 'after the modern'.
Post-modernism: we are constantly immersed in media, meaning the distinction between reality and media representation becomes invisible to us. Therefore the media reality becomes the new reality to us.
Example of Post-modernism
The Matrix- Heavily commercialized- Media-driven society- Hyper reality: reality is altered and detached from anything real- Self reflexivity: self awareness points to
how the text is constructed- Intertextuality: shaping of the texts
meaning from other texts- Simulations
Post-modernism vs Modernism Modernism was based on using rational, logical means to gain knowledge while postmodernism denied the application of logical thinking.
Modernism is about new ideas whereas post-modernism is judged and defined by the media.
