It is a pleasure to welcome all new students to Massey University Albany for an exciting academic life on the campus leading innovation in New Zealand’s largest city – Auckland.

Getting started with your postgraduate study can be an exciting, yet challenging time. While you’re already an experienced student, you may still be new to Massey, new to Albany, or returning to study after a break away. Please have a look through the sessions offered in this Welcome booklet and feel free to attend those that seem relevant to you. There is the opportunity to meet other students, fi nd out what facilities, services and support are available and get to know your way around campus.

You will fi nd a personal planner page at the back of this booklet so you can schedule your Orientation sessions. In particular, please note the Postgraduate Students’ Orientation session on Friday 13 July (see page 6).

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Please note that ALL International, Study Abroad, Student Exchange and StudyAid students MUST attend the International Orientation on Thursday 12 July(information on page 6). This is in addition to any other sessions you attend.

LIBRARY

As a postgraduate student, it is essential that you know how to use the Library and how to access all of the print and electronic resources available to you. The Library has subject-specialist librarians who can help you fi nd what you need, teach you how to use research databases, and manage your references. You can book 1:1 research consultations with your librarian throughout your course of study.

Stream is Massey University's online learning environment and your learningcommunity. Many courses are supported or enhanced by Stream, which includes features such as discussion forums, quizzes, electronic dropboxes, virtual classrooms and more.

INFORMATION ABOUT WEEK 1 SESSIONS

ACCOMMODATION ORIENTATION

This is a compulsory session for all students living in Massey Accommodation. Meet the accommodation team to fi nd out what support is available; we will explain our expectation and key rules, and outline upcoming events.

FLYING START

These sessions are aimed at undergraduate level students, but are still useful if you need to brush up on your basic academic skills, or are returning to study after a long break. There are two sessions, each three hours long. Please attend both sessions. The sessions cover key learning, writing and study skills to help you to succeed in academic studies. Cost $50 which includes a Starter Pack ofresources.

INTERNATIONAL ORIENTATION

All new International, Study Abroad, student exchange and NZ Aid students MUST attend this Orientation session in order to meet enrolment requirements.

UNIVERSITY WELCOME/COLLEGE WELCOME AND INFORMATION SESSION/CAMPUS ORIENTATION AND TOUR

These sessions are primarily designed for undergraduate students, but you are welcome to attend if you wish, particularly if you are new to Massey and the Albany campus. There will be a brief welcome to the University, followed by a presentation by staff from your College and then a session with a Uni-guide from your College who will also take you on a tour of the campus so you will know where services, cafés and your classes are located.

COMPUTER ACCESS

For students who are unfamiliar with Massey’s computer systems. This sessionprovides an introduction to Massey’s computer systems/computer labs and toStream – Massey’s online learning environment.

TIMETABLE DROP-IN

Not sure about fi nding or reading your timetable? At this session you can getpersonal assistance to help you locate and understand your lecture timetable.

MÄORI STUDENTS’ ORIENTATION

Maori Orientation – Nau mai haere mai ki Te Kunenga ki Pürehuroa. Come and join us and meet other Maori students and staff. Start building those networks that will help you along your study pathways. A light kai will be provided.

POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS’ ORIENTATION

This session provides an opportunity to meet the key service providers forpostgraduates on the Albany campus and to mingle with other postgraduatesover tea.

WORKSHOP FOR STUDENTS MANAGING A DISABILITY

The workshop is for students managing a health or disability condition who would like to know more about strategies and support options to enable their study success. INFORMATION ABOUT WEEK 2 SESSIONS

CUPPA WITH THE CHAPLAINS

If you feel the need to relax with a cuppa, some home baking, and a chance for a chat then join us in the lower Foyer of the Study Centre any time from 10am to11.30am. Everyone is welcome.

MATURE STUDENTS’ SESSION

This session is suitable for students who have had a break between school anduniversity study. The session assists students in balancing competing life/studycommitments and acquiring strategies for effective academic outcomes.

PASIFIKA SESSION

A session to welcome all Pasifi ka students, their friends and families on to cam-pus as well as a chance to meet returning students and staff. The Welcome alsoincludes a Scholarship presentation.

WIRELESS SET UP

Have a laptop or IPad you want to use on campus? Drop by the Service desk atthe Library and get it set up correctly to use the hot spots around campus.

LIBRARY TOUR

Take the opportunity for a tour with one of the campus librarians. Get to know your way around, discover the great study spaces and the awesome resources the library has to offer.

POSTGRADUATE COMPUTER SESSION

For students who are unfamiliar with Massey’s computer systems. This session is an introduction to Massey’s computer systems and the postgraduate computer labs.

ACADEMIC WRITING FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

This session is suitable for postgraduate students who are returning to univer-sity study after a long absence and those who are entering university study in New Zealand for the fi rst time. The session provides an overview of key skills required for postgraduate study in New Zealand.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where do I get my computer PIN number?When you enrolled online, you will have been sent your Student ID and PINnumbers by email.

If you cannot fi nd your PIN, simply call 0800 MASSEY and speak to one of theenrolment staff. They can talk you through logging in and how to reset your PIN.You may need to answer some security questions to confi rm your identity.

Alternatively go to Massey Contact in Quad A on campus and they will adviseyou of your PIN. You will need to produce photo identifi cation such as yourdriver’s licence or passport.

How do I get my Student ID cardIf you have not yet applied for an ID card you can get an application form fromeither MyMassey (www.massey.ac.nz) or from Massey Contact in Quad A oncampus. Once you’ve completed the form, drop it in at drop in at MasseyContact. They will be able to tell you if your card will be sent directly to youor if you will need to collect it from them. ID cards can take up to two weeksto arrive.

Where do I fi nd my timetable?Personal timetables are not sent out to students. You can access your timetable through the website portal MyMassey (www.massey.ac.nz) as part of yourMyEnrolment. Here you will see a planner that includes all the compulsoryclasses you must attend plus the labs, clinics and tutorials that you need to signup for. You generally sign up for these via ‘Stream’ which is Massey University’sonline learning environment. If you are having diffi culty fi nding or understanding your timetable, attend the drop-in session during Orientation (see page 5).

How do I change a paper?You are able to change papers using the MyEnrolment portal on the Massey website. Please note it is important to seek advice before adding or droppingpapers. Some papers are full before semester begins, you may have missed too much content or StudyLink funding could be affected. Please contact the staff inMassey Contact to discuss your plans.

Is there student car parking?Yes, students can park at Massey University in the free student car parks. There is no need to for a parking sticker. However car parking spaces are limited and you are advised to consider alternative forms of transport or carpooling.

You will fi nd information on bus routes and timetables at the Albany Student Association offi ce in the Student Amenities Centre, and online at maxx.co.nz. Information about how carpooling works is also available at the Albany Student Association.

My question isn’t here – where do I fi nd an answer?If you’re on campus, then Massey Contact in Quad A on campus is the best place to start to get general questions answered. If they can’t answer your question themselves, they’ll know who to refer you to. If you’re not on campus, call 0800 MASSEY, or visit www.massey.ac.nz, go to MyMassey and then click on the Massey Chat box, you will be able to chat online with a Student Relations Consultant.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH ‘COLLEGE’ IS MINE?

Every qualifi cation (eg: degree, certifi cate, diploma) is associated with a particular College, or occasionally, two Colleges. The list below includes a number of popularqualifi cations and their respective Colleges. If you are unable to fi nd your qualifi cation on the list, and you are unsure of your College, please call 0800 MASSEY, tell them which qualifi cation you are enrolled in and ask them for your College. If you are on campus you can also drop into Massey Contact in Quad A and they will be able to tell you.
