MY EXPERIENCE:RHONA MccALLUMMA Jewellery and Silversmithing
The Universitys Careers Service helped jewellerydesigner Rhona, from Scotland, UK, win a placeon the shortlist for the Deutsche Bank Awardfor Creative Enterprises.
I know that I want to have my ownjewellery business, but I think thatprofessional experience is also veryimportant, so its a long-term plan.
Im still doing exhibitions and sellingwork alongside the masters. The College[Edinburgh College of Art] really encouragespeople to enter competitions andexhibitions as part of the professionalpractice side of the programme, whichis basically about running your work asthough youre already running a business.
Ive been quite worried about what Imgoing to do after graduating, so I wentto see Maureen McIntyre in the CareersService who has worked with arts careers
for a few years. It was nice to have someoneto run through ideas and tell me its notcompletely stupid.
With support from the Careers Service,I applied for the Deutsche Bank Award, which is a 10,000 business start-upgrant and I got shortlisted. I appliedto set up my own workshop, whereI can run my own business.
Im really glad I did it because Ive neverhad to do a full budget before. I do myown admin but Ive never had to calculateor forecast prot or loss. It was challengingbut I now have a business plan I can useto formalise what I really want to achievewith my idea.

MY EXPERIENCE:HARSH VAIDYAPhD Stem Cell Biology,Centre for Regenerative Medicine
Business skills training offered by the UniversitysInstitute for Academic Development is helpingHarsh, from India, prepare for a career in business.
When I nish my PhD I plan to get a job inindustry, maybe a pharmaceutical companyor a biotechnology company not i n R&Dbut more in business development.
Theres a lot of help available at Edinburghif someone wants to pursue a career in
industry or start their own business. The Institute for Academic Development(IAD) runs workshops throughout the year, giving you basic knowledge of businessnance, business plans and team building.
Last year I attended the InstitutesLEADER Summer School in Denmark. It was really helpful because there weresessions on entrepreneurship and business, personality development, leadership and
communication, and intellectual propertyand copyright. We also learned how tocommunicate our research to the public.
I think its always important to haveadditional skills because when you gofor a job its not only your theoretical
knowledge or how you work in the labthat counts, but how you communicatewith others, or how you work in a team,so all this training really helps.
I think Id be pretty competitive whenapplying for jobs because employersalso look for what you do alongside yourqualication, and I can demonstrate skillsfrom these workshops and the otherthings Ive done here.
