John Kerry

Boston College

Law School

Lieutenant Gov.

of Mass.

Pres. Candidate

2004

US Secretary

of State

John Kerry’s Remarks“I can’t tell you how many world leaders I meet who tell

me how fondly they remember studying at an American

university – and the connection they’ve felt to the United

States ever since. International education creates lifelong

friendships between students and strengthens the bonds

between nations.”

+Your Assignment

Listen to John Kerry’s speech again. Create a poster on a specific topic related to International Education, such as:

The top reason(s) you’re here in the U.S. – what did you have to do to get here? What do you hope to gain?

Major thing(s) you’ve learned about global leadership in your classes

How to make connections with other students at a U.S. college – how is that the same or different than making connections in your own country?

Something you’ve noticed about US culture or life in Boston that is different from your own culture or city

Something you’ve noticed about relationships (egstudent-faculty; friend-friend; diner-server)

+1. Your Topic

Think about something that surprised you about your

experience in the U.S.

Think about relationships. What is the same? What is

different?

Think about communication. What is easy about

communicating with people from other cultures? What is

difficult?

Think about your educational experience so far. What do you

like? What is hard?

+2. Your Stories or Interviews

Stories:

Write a little story of something from your country.

Write a little story about something that’s happened here.

E.g. If your topic is “teacher-student relationships,” tell a specific story about an interaction you had with a teacher in your own country. Then tell a story about an interaction you had with a teacher here to show similarities and differences.

Interviews:

Interview someone from your country.

Interview someone from the US.

E.g. If your topic is “being a leader,” interview some friends from back home about their ideas on leadership, then interview some new friends here for a global perspective.

+3. Your Photos or Illustrations

Photos

Find some photos from your own country.

Take some photos here in the U.S.

It’s best to use your own photos!

If you are using photos taken by someone else, be sure you have

permission to use the photo, and be sure to list the source.

Illustrations

If a photo isn’t best, maybe you could draw a graphic or cartoon!

+4. Your Thesis

What’s your conclusion?

Visitors to the OCB International Poster Fair will have an

opportunity to agree, disagree, ask questions, and engage in

discussion.
