The Project:Understanding how we perceive and interact with others is a core challenge for social cognition research, and understanding how those processes change across developmental time poses an even greater challenge. The Becoming Social project will span 5+ years and be a dedicated research effort to systematically investigate how we process, learn from, and understand social interactions across both typical and atypical development. Using developmental, behavioural and brain-imaging methods across ages and in a clinical population characterized by deficits in social interaction, this project hopes to bring a novel, integrative and rigorous approach to these investigations.

The Job:A full time post-doctoral researcher post as part of a European Research Council funded Starting Grant focused on Developmental Social Neuroscience. The project, ‘Becoming Social’, is led by Dr. Kami Koldewyn, within the Developmental Social Vision Lab. The post is part of a new team working in the area of developmental social neuroscience. Ultimately, the team will consist of two postdoctoral associates, two PhD students, the PI and a research support officer focused on participant recruitment and community engagement. This post will be the first post in the team to be appointed (other than the PI) and, as such, will have considerable influence on the progression of the project.

THE DEPARTMENT

We are one of the UK’s oldest (est. 1963), largest (>1000

undergrads, >200 postgrads, ~60 PhD students) and most

successful Psychology departments, with a well established

track record of excellence in research: 89% of our total

research activity was judged to be internationally excellent

or world-leading in REF 2014; overall, the School ranked

17th out of 82 universities.

Bangor Psychology is one of only two UK Psychology

departments that ranked in the top 10 for student

satisfaction (NSS) and in the top 20 for research (REF)

when these were last done at the same time. The department

also ranked 4th in the UK (of 117) in the 2016 NSS. This

clearly demonstrates our rare combination of both teaching

and research excellence.

Bangor Psychology is supported by a state-of-the-art research

environment. This includes an in-house research-dedicated

Phillips 3T MRI which supports fMRI, MRS and DTI;

multiple eye-tracking labs; highdensity EEG systems; and

MRI-guided stimulation techniques including TMS and tDCS.

The Bangor Imaging Unit user group provides a strong,

experienced and supportive environment for research, and

strong links to clinical services (e.g. neurology) at the Betsi

Cadwaladr University Health Board.

The combination of state-of-the-art facilities, a friendly and

colleagial working environment and a world-class list of

potential collaborators makes the School of Psychology at

Bangor University an ideal place to pursue cutting-edge

research.

SITUATED BETWEEN THE MOUNTAINS AND THE SEANorth Wales has been named the 4th best region in the world to visit by the Lonely Planet guide due to its stunning location and “shiny new adventure sports facilities”. Some of the adrenalin fuelled activities in the area include riding the waves at Surf Snowdonia, experiencing the fastest zip line in the world at Zip World and bouncing on giant underground trampolines at Bounce Below! The region also features several castles, stunning gardens and neverending chances to enjoy both mountain and ocean sports.

Bangor: Bangor is a historic city exploding with character and boasts the longest high street in Wales. Bangor is a small city, but has a cathedral, museum, art gallery, lovingly restored victorian pier, botanical gardens and an array of shopping and restaurants.

The Island of Anglesey: Anglesey is one of the most popular destinations in North Wales and because it’s an island there’s the added bonus of never being too far from the sea. There are plenty of sand-kissed beaches to chose from when you cross the bridge. Anglesey is also your gateway to Ireland. The high speed ferry means that Dublin is less than 3 hours away.

Snowdonia National Park: Snowdonia National Park’s 2,132 square kilometers of mountains, lakes and rivers offer plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy the great outdoors. The village of Llanberis is at the heart of the park with stunning lakes and scenery. If you fancy a challenge, bring your walking boots and climb to the summit of Snowdon - the highest peak in England and Wales. Walking, climbing, kayaking and canoeing are just some of the sports that can be enjoyed in the park, and it is also home to Europe’s longest zip-wire.

Housing and schools: Whether you choose to live close to the city, in one of the surrounding villages, or further afield, you will find a wide range of housing within a comfortable distance of Bangor and the University. For families, the area has a range of excellent schools both in the state and independent sector.

Travelling and Connections: Despite it’s location on the far-west coast of north Wales, Bangor is a well connected city. By train you can reach London Euston in three hours and Dublin in two hours away by Ferry. Manchester Airport is two hours away by car and flights from nearby Liverpool (1.5 hours by car) provide easy access to mainland Europe. By Eurostar from London St Pancras, Paris is just over six hours away.

“...a friendly cathedral city set in a stunning location. It lies betweenSnowdonia and the Menai Strait, which divides mainland Wales from the island of Anglesey... Bangor is a safe, cleanand affordable place to live, and comes highly recommended.”

The Guardian University Guide

“...Even amongst the UK’s treasured national parks, Snowdonia is unique. No other park has such a magical mix of craggy mountains and sandy beaches around it. In a single day you can hike a peak, sunbathe on a beach, and lose yourself in quiet country lanes between the two.”
