Brisbane Street nears completion

Council workers took to the water last week to repair a leaking joint in a sewer rising main beneath Boyds Bay Bridge at Tweed Heads.

The bracket securing the main to the bottom of the bridge gave way last Thursday, allowing the pipe to sag and the joint seal to break. Almost immediately, Council diverted the flow from the Tweed Heads to Banora Point main via an alternate route.

The broken joint was repaired early last week by crew working from both beneath and above the bridge deck.

Above the bridge deck, workers lowered a crane hook through an access point in the centre median strip so it could be attached to a chain fitted around the sagging pipe below deck by men working from a floating platform.

The pipe was then lifted slowly back into position and the broken bracket resecured.

Additional safety cables were fitted on the main at the high points beneath the bridge to guard against further breaks.

Phil Pritchard and Matt Matulovich secure a chain around the sagging pipe while working from a floating platform beneath the bridge.

Stitches and Craft group member Noni Sutton, Acting Murwillumbah Library Branch Supervisor Michelle Harper, group members Mary Noble, Carolynn Poll, Ambassador for the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital Frances Petrou and library group member Elsbeth Gartly.

A library group has been stitching a special link between Murwillumbah and India, creating homemade gifts for disadvantaged children who have undergone heart surgery.

Murwillumbah Library’s Stitches and Craft group has been hard at work knitting and crocheting items to donate to the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital in India, an organisation that provides child heart care and surgeries free of cost.

Acting Murwillumbah Library Branch Supervisor Michelle Harper said the library was extremely pleased to have the group involved in such a worthwhile and supportive project.

Stitches and Craft member Carolynn Poll said locals donated the wool the group used to knit beanies, scarfs, booties, cardigans and blankets.

“We are happy to do the knitting and crocheting for a good cause. It makes it even better that it is also a social group, so we all get a lot of enjoyment out of it,” Ms Poll said.

Tweed resident Frances Petrou became an ambassador for the hospital after visiting India in May and has since liaised with a Stitches and Craft member. She will be delivering the items when she visits again in December.

“As soon as you walk into this hospital there is an atmosphere of total care. The child and parents are treated as royalty and everything is provided free of charge,” Ms Petrou said.

“Carers are also looked after with food and board for the entire duration of the treatment. Some of the parents I met had been waiting for eight or nine years for their child to have treatment, so you can imagine the atmosphere of gratitude and love that fills the hospital.

“The idea of the knitting project happened in September when Mr Sreenivas (from the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital) was in Murwillumbah. We came up with the idea of giving a ‘gift of love’ with each certificate that was handed to the child when they were leaving called ‘gift of life’, which has a picture and the date of their operation,” she said.

“It is a wonderful project as we get a monthly newsletter from the hospital and you get a real sense of being part of something real, vital and energetic which gives such joy to both the children and the knitters.”

Everyone is welcome to come along to Stitches and Craft, which meets every Tuesday from 10am at Murwillumbah Library and also creates items for the Murwillumbah Community Centre and other organisations.

Retrofit has sewer system humming Council’s after hours team to sewer breakdowns is sleeping easier after the completion of a three-month project to refurbish Tumbulgum’s vacuum sewer system.

Council put bigger pumps into the village’s pump stations and duplicated a vacuum main to give the system more grunt. It also added telemetry to half the sewer pots (every four properties shares a pot) so that staff can now dial in remotely to investigate and fix breakdowns.

All up, Council invested $158,000 in the upgrade but expects to get that investment back within 18 months as the costs of maintenance, water and electricity will halve now that the system is ‘humming’.

Tumbulgum has the only vacuum sewer system in the shire and while it was installed in the 1990s, it was cheaper to refurbish it than replace it with typical gravity sewer or other technology.

“Vacuum systems are more complex than gravity sewer systems and Tumbulgum, in particular, was harder to manage,” Senior Water and Wastewater Engineer Peter Haywood explained. “They operate by sucking wastewater through in vapour form from a series of pots fitted with valves that open when the pot fills. The valves remain open after emptying to introduce a set amount of air into the system.”

Prior to the refurbishment, the Tumbulgum system vacuum would not handle wet weather.

“Every time it started to rain we would send our crews to Tumbulgum to open extra air inlets to give the system the best chance of surviving. We’d also have suck trucks there at the ready to empty the system.

“The system has had its first taste of wet weather in the past fortnight and it has passed with flying colours.”

The original pumps required water continuously circulating through them. The new pumps don’t require any water and Council already has noticed a large saving in that area.

While residents will notice no difference in the sewer service they receive, they may note the absence of Council workers checking pots in backyards.

The project required engineering, mechanical, electrical, technical and civil teams to work together on the complete retrofit. The majority of the work was completed in-house, with only the duplication of the main undertaken by contract pipe layers.
