Background Information

At the request of the Minooka Community High School District #111Board of Education, MCHS officials set out to explore generalimpressions from school communitys stakeholders in regard to the

current MCHS grading scale, which is as listed below:

100% - 93% = A92% - 85% = B84% - 78% = C

77% - 70% = D69% and below = F

This grading scale has been in place for at least 25 years(according to previous MCHS Curriculum Guides).

For analysis purposes, school officials researched the grading scalesof the 31 public high schools that reside within a thirty mile radius ofMCHS. The research yielded the following results:

28 (90%) use a10-point scale

: :100% - 90% = A89% - 80% = B79% - 70% = C69% - 60% = D

59% and below = F

1 uses a9-point scale

: :100% - 91% = A90% - 82% = B81% - 73% = C72% - 64% = D

63% and below = F

1 uses an8-point scale

: :100% - 92% = A91% - 84% = B83% - 76% = C75% - 68% = D

67% and below = F

1 school uses a non-traditional model that enables each academic department to

determine its own grading scale.

Also for analysis purposes, school officials researched the gradingscales of Minooka Community High Schools three sender districts. Theresearch yielded the following results:

Minooka CCSD #201100%-94% = A93%-86% = B85%-76% = C

75% - 70% = D69% and below = F

Channahon SD #17100%-93% = A92%-85% = B84%-76% = C

75% - 68% = D67% and below = F

Troy CCSD #30-C100%-93% = A92%-85% = B84%-77% = C

76% - 70% = D69% and below = F

The survey was offered to three general school community stakeholdergroups:

Preferred Grading Scale by Survey Group

All survey participants were provided with a listing of the current MCHS grading scale and threeother sample scales (traditional ten-point, traditional nine-point, traditional eight-point), and were

asked to indicate which scale they preferred most.

The traditional ten-point scale received the most votes from each group as the

preferred scale, followed by the current MCHS scale.

Follow-Up Questions/Topics

Based on responses by survey respondents, it will be useful to research answers tothe following questions:

1. How do colleges and universities assess applicants (class rank, GPA, ACT/SAT,

etc.)? Does the current MCHS scale actually hurt MCHS students chances in theareas of: a.) college acceptance, b.) earning scholarships, and c.) earningfinancial aid when compared to students from schools with more commonly usedscales? Does the MCHS grading scale negatively impact any/all of thoseareas?

2. What impact does the current MCHS grading scale actually have on our

students? Does the scale hinder the possibility of grade recovery if a studentfalls behind?

3. To what enhanced degree does the existing scale challenge students to workharder to earn grades and prepare them for life after high school? Is there afear that lowering the scale will inadvertently allow students to not try ashard for their grades?

Follow-Up Questions/Topics

Survey findings will be shared the discussion groups scheduled for Thursday,February 28, from 6 p.m. 7:30 p.m. in the South Campus cafeteria, and for

Wednesday, March 6, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the MCHS Central Campus

Career Center.

MCHS officials will also continue to research topics that have resulted from surveydata analysis and from respondents comments.

A follow-up report on the survey results will be shared with the MCHS District #111

Board of Education on Thursday, March 7, followed by a report to the schoolcommunity. Future steps will be identified as needed and according to

administrative recommendations and Board of Education approval.
