3D printed prototypes are mostly used as a physicaltest product or as a mould. The prototype needs to bethe exact same size as the final product but the lookand feel can be different. Some customers prefer tohave the 3D printed prototype look just as the finalproduct. This can be done by post-processing the 3Dprinted object.

A good example of a post processed prototype is the19-inch Lamborghini wheel which was 3D printed onthe Builder Extreme 1500 and post-processed byDream 3D. The aim was to made this 3D printed wheelto look like an actual wheel of a Lamborghini. After thePLA 3D print was finished, the post-processing began.

Firstly, the wheel was sanded and after that Dream 3Dused a car body filler to fill up the gap between the 2prints. To smoothen this up, they gave the wheelanother sanding and applied XTC-3D which is aprotective coating for smoothing and finishing 3Dprinted parts. After the XTC-3D was dried, anothersanding session was done and the wheel was ready tobe primed. After three coats of prime, the wheel wasready for its colour, matte black. The bolts were paintedseparately in metallic silver.

As you can see in the video, post-processing can takea while but doing so to a 3D printed prototype is stillcheaper than outsourcing the prototyping elsewhere. If you need to have a 3D printed prototype whichlooks like the final product, this is definitely the wayto achieve good results with minimum material costs.
