Similar to Impressionism in that...

• Artists still used bright colors that were often applied crudely.

• Obvious brush strokes and thick application of paint.

• Real-life subject matter.

Page 3: Post Impressionism

Post Impressionism is different from Impressionism because...

• Not as cohesive as Impressionism, in that there were a few smaller "movements" and ideologies within P.I.

• More focus on feelings and emotions through artworks.

• Distorted forms instead of realistic forms in order to show emotion and expression.

• Use of unnatural or arbitrary (random) colors.

Styles within P.I. (some I made up :-)

• Pointilism: The use of tiny dots of color. Artists include: Georges Seurat, Georges Lemmen.

• Purer-Impressionism: Sort of a continuation of Impressionism but with more intention and thought (or so they said...)

• Feelings- and Emotions-based: a way of painting that conveyed a state of mind and showed emotion through the application of paint. Artists include: Van Gogh.

What we will be doing...How to Collage with Vik Muniz

Vik Muniz website

You will choose one Post Impressionist painting to recreate using collage with a partner. Once you have decided on the painting, I will print you a color version of it for reference.

Included in this assignment will be some research about the painting and the artist.
