Cover:Our cover reflects the mateship legend born when the ANZACs stormed ashore at Gallipoli 100 years ago.

In this bumper edition we honour our ANZACs by listing the names of every West Australian killed during the eight and a half month campaign at Gallipoli.

We also list more than 100 Commemorative Services which are being held throughout the State by members of The Returned & Services League of WA.

These Centennial Services will attract tens of thousands of people, while in Perth special arrangements have been made to encourage people to use public transport.

At the Supreme Court Gardens, songstress Kelly Newton-Wordsworth will set minds thinking and eyes watering when she sings her composition ‘Lest we Forget’ at the ANZAC Day Commemorative Service.

Kelly’s story is on Page 4.

• GIANT MOMENT: The Giants came and went, but this moment had an untold impact on 13-year-old Leisa Russell, the St Hilda’s student who lifted a torch into the eternal flame at Kings Park on 16 February. Leisa was only days old when her Dad, Sergeant Andrew Russell, serving with Special Air Service Regiment, died in Afghanistan on 16 February 2002. Leisa proudly lit the torch and passed it on to a military cadet to light another, smaller, Camp Gallipoli torch for transfer to a memorial flame ceremony at Langley Park, where The Giants said goodbye to Perth.

We gave our best at GallipoliWest Australians contributed more than their share at Gallipoli 100 years ago and we proudly remember them.

Our passion to remember is demonstrated by the more than 100 ANZAC Day services being held in WA this month. Details of the services, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the landing at ANZAC Cove, are included in this special Centennial edition.

“Western Australia sent many of its best to Gallipoli,” says James Hurst, author of ‘Game to the Last, the 11th Australian Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli’. “Many of them are still there.”

In just eight and a half months, Gallipoli claimed the lives of more than 8,700 Australians – and 1,023 West Australians. We have honoured them by publishing all their names.

More than 44,000 British Empire soldiers were either killed, died of wounds or died of disease during the Gallipoli campaign– including 21,200 British, 2,700 New Zealanders, 1,300 Indians (which includes Gurkhas), and 49 Newfoundlanders. The French, who fought exclusively in the Helles area, suffered an estimated 10,000 dead. In the defence of their homeland at least 86,000 Turks gave their lives. More than 261,000 on all sides were wounded.

Only four battalions landed at ANZAC before dawn on 25 April 1915, and the West Australian 11th Battalion was one of them. Yet even in this select group of battalions West Australians were over-represented – a quarter of the 12th Battalion had also enlisted in WA, so nearly a third of the ‘covering force’, the first force ashore, came from Western Australia.

The 11th Battalion went on to fight five more engagements in the next three months - surely a unique performance. These included the ‘first raid’ by the AIF, commanded by Captain Ray Leane, who would become ‘the head of the most famous family of soldiers in Australian history’. Leane also led the assault that captured a Turkish position nearly a week before the epic battle at Lone Pine – possibly the first time since the landing that either side had taken and held an enemy trench. The post was named ‘Leane’s Trench’ in his honour.

The 10th Light Horse Regiment was also raised in WA. They garrisoned one of the deadliest positions at ANZAC, the notorious Quinn’s Post, and left some of WA’s best-known names lying lifeless at the Nek in the battle portrayed in Peter Weir’s film, Gallipoli. Hugo Throssell survived the Nek to fight at Hill 60, Gallipoli, where he earned the only Victoria Cross to be awarded to the light horse during the war.

Many other units or parts thereof were raised in WA and served at Gallipoli – infantry, artillery, medical and others.

The 16th Battalion fought at the Landing and produced many great soldiers, including Harry Murray and Percy Black. Black would survive Gallipoli but die breaching the Hindenburg Line at Bullecourt. Ellis Silas, an Englishman

more familiar with polite company than shearing sheds, served as bravely as any, but his constitution only survived a few weeks at Gallipoli. Fortunately for us, he was an artist, and returned to paint and draw his memories of the Landing, the experiences of the common soldier, and the disastrous charge at Dead Man’s Ridge, which littered the scrub of Gallipoli’s ‘grim shore’ with the bodies of more West Australians.

James Hurst recently received his doctorate for his thesis on the landing at ANZAC, Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He says one of the aims of his book ‘Game to the Last, the 11th Australian Infantry Battalion at Gallipoli’ was to create direct links between Gallipoli and WA. He will be giving a free talk on the landing at ANZAC House at 10am on 15 April. To register call 9287 3706.

Tears to song – Lest we forgetSongstress Kelly Newton-Wordsworth will set minds thinking and eyes watering when she sings her own composition of ‘Lest we Forget’ at Perth’s Commemorative Service on ANZAC Day.

Her song is simple and poignant and for this internationally-performed singer it means a great deal.

“I wrote ‘Lest we forget’ when it was coming up to ANZAC Day in 1993 and I was sitting in my studio and imagining what it would be like to be a soldier on the way to fight in a war,” she told The Listening Post.

“My mind wandered to my grandfather and his brother who were fighting in World War 1, and how they grew up in Ireland in a family of 11 children, who made up their own small orchestra. I wondered what it would be like to go from playing Mozart, Bach and Brahms to hear only the sound of machine guns and bombs.

“I started to contemplate the value of any person’s life. I began to feel very emotional and picked up my guitar and started to write the opening words, ‘Do you know how it feels to be a soldier’ and the song flowed out amongst many tears and an awakening to the huge gratefulness I feel about the life we all have in Australia.”

Kelly, the wife of a South-West bio-dynamic farmer and mother of three, will perform her song at the 11am service in the Supreme Court Gardens.

“Singing ‘Lest we forget’ for all of the people who gave their all for us, is for me one of the greatest honours I have ever been given in my life,” she says.

“In this song I ask every listener to imagine what it would be like to go to war, to be a mother, parent, sibling, relation or friend of someone who is marching on their way to fight.

“Being truly grateful to all of the people who have gone before us, who

have made such huge sacrifices for all of us to be able to live the life we have today, flows from that.”

Kelly comes from an artistic family. Her grandfather, Percy Newton, co-founded the WA Symphony Orchestra with his brother John Nugent Haywood. Both fought in the World War 1.

“My husband’s grandfather General Wordsworth fought as a member of the Light Horse at Gallipoli and then went on to serve in World War 2. My other grandfather Leslie Cowan also served in World War 2.”

Kelly initially studied to be a lawyer, but ‘retired’ the day after being admitted to the Bar and switched to working full time as an actress and singer until marrying William and moving to a farm south-west of Perth.

She has recorded songs since 1987, making seven albums, video clips and performing all over the world since 1997. She sang for the King of Thailand at his 80th birthday celebration to around half a million people at his palace in Bangkok.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S PEN

The Listening Post APRIL 2015 5

It’s not over for the livingBy State President Graham Edwards, AM

Charles Bean, military historian, in 1916, wrote:Many a man lying out there at Pozieres or in the low scrub at Gallipoli, with his poor tired senses barely working through the fever of his brain, has thought in his last moments: “Well - well - it’s over; but in Australia they will be proud of this”.

The challenge, indeed duty, of the RSL in this the year of the Centenary of ANZAC is to do the memory of these men justice and to ensure we make them proud. And I know we are doing that in many ways right across the State as we prepare for ANZAC Day. Phil Orchard and myself have recently returned from visiting various sub-branches in the bush and whole communities are working with the local RSL to commemorate their local fallen. What is happening in our state is inspiring to us all.Just as these young men came from the suburbs, the farming communities,

the mining towns and places in the bush so to do our sub-branches now commemorate our fallen in those same places.New memorials have been opened and old ones refurbished. Wherever we have visited there is a tangible enthusiasm and determination to do our diggers proud. Many of our sub-branches are experiencing a strong sense of renewed connection within their communities as people recognise the something special about this year.Students of all ages, older members, local government, State government, community groups all seem to see this Centenary of ANZAC as a commemoration they want to be a part of. And it is not just ANZAC Day. As you are aware some profits from last year’s Bankwest Gallipoli Run have been used to purchase 20 bugles which will be presented to various high schools with musical programs to encourage students to learn the instrument and its history. The first of these bugles has been presented to Kalamunda Senior High School student Aiden

Law-Davis. Aiden will form part of the Perth Hills and Wheatbelt Band, which will tour Europe from 24 June for five weeks.

Our ultimate aim is to develop a fully accredited RSL course to learn the bugle and its ceremonial protocol and history. This will help young people learn the history, heritage and sacrifice of over 102,000 young men and women who have given their lives in the service of this nation.

Other projects include school students writing messages on small crosses that will find their way to War Cemeteries in various overseas battlefields where Australians have fallen.

We Will Remember Them

As we approach the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli a figure familiar and dear to many taking part in the ANZAC Day march through Perth is planning to be there once again. She too is 100 years old. Each ANZAC Day Anne Leach dons her old nurse’s uniform with its white veil and red cape, grey dress and brown shoes (with stockings) , and a chest full of medals, to join the march. These days she no longer steps out but, in a concession to age, takes pride of place in one of the veteran open air jeeps which lead the parade. Anne enlisted as an Army nurse in Perth in 1940 and served for two years in the Middle East in Egypt and Palestine. There she made friendships and gathered memories to last a lifetime. On return home she married a young officer from the 2/16th Battalion,

Vernon Leach, whom she had met on a blind date in Gaza. As a married woman she was no longer eligible for overseas service and so transferred to what later became known as Hollywood Hospital.

Post-war, Anne’s sense of service and commitment to her community remained undiminished. For more than half a century she devoted her care and her qualities to an extraordinary range of voluntary groups including the Red Cross, the Girl Guides, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Returned Sisters sub-branch of the RSL of which she is an honorary life member.

Time might march on. And so does a remarkable ‘centurion’. Look for her on ANZAC Day. The one in the historic nurse’s uniform. Marching on.

Dear Editor,

I refer to your recent report of the commemoration at Kings Park this year of the loss of HMAS ‘Voyager’ on 10 February 1964. Lt Commander Godfrey (Gus) Garstin of RANR spoke movingly of the tragedy and I thought you might be interested in my journey over the last years.

In November 2014 I wrote to the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, referring to my campaign for more than three years for a memorial in the nation’s capital for the men of HMAS

‘Voyager.’ Some of those men served in World War II and/or the Korean War. One such man was Chief Petty Officer Jonathan Rogers GC DSM. This sailor had a fine service record in the Royal Navy having been awarded the DSM for the ‘coolness and leadership’ he showed while serving as coxswain in May 1944.

He emigrated to Australia after the war and joined the Royal Australian Navy and served in the Korean War. He was serving on board HMAS ‘Voyager’ on the night of 10 February 1964 when the ship sunk after a collision with

HMAS ‘Melbourne.’ He was awarded the George Cross posthumously for his gallant efforts in helping the men. Eighty-two men died that night.

Over the last three years, my correspondence has been with politicians, Ministers of the Crown, Canberra National Memorials Committee, National Capital Authority, Navy Strategic Command, RSL LifeCare, individuals concerned with the loss of HMAS ‘Voyager’ as well as the Australian War Memorial and others.

‘Voyager’ dead deserve a Memorial

ANZAC Day on Big Pigeon IslandI recently retired after 30 years’ service as a Magistrate sitting in all areas of the State but principally in Armadale and Mandurah. In September, 1966, I was initially conscripted into the Army and served in Malaysia and Vietnam.

My writing is not about those long past events but about ANZAC Day each year at Big Pigeon Island in the Wallabi group of the Abrolhos Islands.

The Abrolhos Islands comprise 122 islands and they are populated usually between March and June/July of each year by fishermen and their families associated with the rock lobster industry.

The islands are a wind-swept outpost only accessible by sea or air and most of the residents have been involved in the industry for years.

I have had the privilege of attending quite a number of ANZAC services at the school on Big Pigeon and each one is not only a tribute to the fallen but a tribute to this small community which takes so much pride in involving all, locals and visitors alike, in a moving and unique service conducted on a small island 70 km off the coast of Western Australia.

The word goes out to first-time visitors that the service is on and in the pre-dawn darkness you can hear the hum

of outboard motors and see the flash of torches as people make their way to the school via stony paths which weave their way between the camps, huddled together as though to shelter each other from the prevailing winds.

The school is built at the outer edge of the island directly above the sea and as you gather waiting for the service, the sound of the waves breaking below is an eerie reminder of what confronted our first ANZACs as they approached the hostile shores of Gallipoli. The service is moving in its simplicity and more so because of the contribution made by everyone on the island.

On most occasions the children of the community play an important part by readings and song and often a visiting boatie will contribute something which makes this such a unique occasion.

One year a skipper sailing by with wife and two children on board was able to play The Last Post on his bugle and, in another, a singer/guitarist contributed a haunting rendition of The Band Played Waltzing Matilda which, for me, combined with the occasional moaning of the wind and the sighing of the sea evoked memories best shared only with those who understand them.Nothing is requested of any guest and all community members contribute freely of their time and resources in an act of selfless generosity.I am sure that in this era of an increasing recognition of the contribution of our service personnel there are many other services staged by small communities but to me none could match the genuine sense of togetherness which binds everyone who has the good fortune to be on Big Pigeon on ANZAC Day.Thank you again to all on the island for allowing me, at last, to feel a real sense of pride in what I and my battalion brothers were able to contribute to our military history and for acknowledging, as you do each year, the sacrifice of those who gave their lives or suffered ill health in the service of our wonderful country.Lest we Forget

Space is limited in this bumper ANZAC Day edition so my Bits n Pieces column will purely highlight what other items are happening in the background of ANZAC Day with a very short explanation:

• Aged membership – my thanks to Peter Farrell and the Highgate branch for their suggestion to establish a ‘Retired Member’ category. Please see the State Presidents letter to all sub-branches.

• Defence Force Medal applications - sub-branches continue to supply outdated applications resulting in the correct information not being supplied and slowing down the process. Please remove any old copies and refer to www.defence.gov.au/medals - The site has a new online form as well as a printer friendly version of the form.

• ANZAC House – Many of you are aware that ANZAC House was to undertake refurbishment

during the Christmas period of a number of systems including the air conditioning and electrical switchboard. Space does not allow me the opportunity to explain in depth, however, renovation remains on the backburner at present due to further discussions with various government agencies.

• ANZAC House will be restricted to members only (and one registered, signed in guest) on ANZAC Day. The only other persons being permitted unfettered access are uniformed ADF members – or ADF Members on presentation of ID. General public attending on the day will be directed to the Marquee in Irwin St.

• New committees are being established that define use of the Amelioration Fund and revamp the Congress Awards system. These committees will involve sub-branch opinion.

• Legislation – we have contributed to the Minister for Veterans’ review to examine two Acts relevant to the RSL. These are ANZAC Day Act

1960 and the Western Australia Aged Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen’s Relief Fund Act 1932. Sub-branches were requested to forward input as this was RSLWA’s opportunity to ensure our Minister is aware of the relevant needs of the veteran community through renewed legislation. Sadly only a few responses were received.

Apologies for the briefness of this article but keep your eye on the website (www.rslwahq.org.au) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/rslwahq) for updates.

What is happening for the Centenary?By Centenary Program Manager Sharon Harford

With the Centenary of ANZAC fast approaching, it’s all systems go here at the RSL head office.

I’m sure you are all aware that we started out the year with a big bang in that we had The Giants open the Perth International Arts Festival. We worked with the artists to ensure that the story of the ANZACs was a strong feature of the program and as such we had a special moment outside ANZAC House which involved school students from Carine SHS and a piper from Presbyterian Ladies College, as well as some of our Board members.

We also had a significant moment in the finale which featured the giant wreaths made by our poppy ladies and our State President, Graham Edwards,

reading the Ode at Langley Park in front of an enormous crowd.

We are working with the Department of Culture and the Arts and the City of Perth on an amazing ANZAC Cultural precinct long weekend over 25 to 27 April (see photo page 12).

100 Years of ANZAC – a Community Event is a three day, day-time community event that is focused on free family activities and entertainment that includes a range of live music, interactive children’s activities, exhibitions, displays, dance, storytelling, circus, poetry, installations, stalls, screen activation and food that are based on the overarching WW1 theme with a focus on reflection, gratitude and education.

If you don’t get a chance to get to go to Albany, come to the Cultural precinct and see what is happening in Perth.

School students across the State are producing commemorative crosses which will feature in the Bankwest Gallipoli Run, the Honour Avenues and then the Australian War Memorial will distribute the crosses to the gravesites of Australians who are buried overseas.

There are a series of amazing musical programs being performed for the Centenary including an ANZAC Commemorative Concert on 23 April with WASO, and an ANZAC Requiem on 24 and 25 April by the Collegium Symphonic Chorus.

Special thanks to McDonald’s Community Cinemas who have this year shown six films at the Burswood as fund raisers for the RSL.

Don’t forget that we will also be holding a series of Sunset Services this

• WREATH LAID: One of the highlights of The Giant’s visit to Perth was the presentation of beautiful poppy-laden wreaths. Carine Senior High School students gave one to the Little Girl Giant when she stopped outside ANZAC House. From left, Graham Edwards (State President), Year 12 students Kate Fisher (Head Girl) Asher Rasmussen (Head Boy), Josiah Roberts, Megan Aspinall and the RSLWA’s Centenary Program Manager Sharon Harford.

year which will run from 19-24 April at the State War Memorial.

The Sunset Services are held at the State War Memorial and start at 5pm.

At these services we take the opportunity to recognise some individual Western Australians.

This year the services will have a different theme each night.

19 April – 7 Young men under the age of 18 who died in WW1

20 April – The Facey Brothers

21 April – Father John Fahey and Chaplain Walter Dexter

22 April – The Farmer Brothers and James Dickerson

23 April – Sister May Ashton

24 April – An Australian, New Zealand and Turkish Soldier

The service on 19 April will be particularly special as we honour the seven young men all under the age of 18 who died in WW1. This service

will be completely run by young people, also all under the age of 18.

One of the first things that strikes you when you look at the histories of these young men is that there are many inaccuracies in their records. This is due to the fact that in order to enlist in the AIF they had to lie about

their age and as a result some of their gravestones indicate they were older than they really were.

If you are interested in laying a wreath at any of these Sunset Services please contact Sharon Harford on 9287 3799 – there are limited opportunities so please register early.

WA’s Gallipoli dead – ‘we ate an elephant’By Shannon Lovelady

I started the Gallipoli Dead from Western Australia project in June 2013 because someone asked the question: How many West Australians were killed at Gallipoli? We didn’t know. I thought we should know.

Everyone I spoke to said it was an impossible task, but I have a background in database administration, am good at handling mass data and have years of family history, including military, research experience.

I broached the idea with the WA Genealogical Society’s WA Interest Group (of which I am a member) and the idea was well received. Within a day or two I had about a dozen research volunteers, my first lot, from there.

After about a fortnight I had a total of 30 brilliant volunteers. I work three days a week so on those days I only worked on the project from about

6-11pm. On the days I was not at work, I worked at least 12-14 hours a day on the project.

Just adding that up now, it’s roughly 1,625 hours in those first 25 weeks. My husband, always hugely supportive, picked up the slack for shopping, cooking, cleaning, and driving our kids around.

On Christmas Eve 2013, after 25 weeks, all the men’s names had been completely researched and the list was almost finished. I consciously put the project aside for a few weeks.

When I picked it up again a short time later, it was to play with the data, find inconsistencies, weed out the soft-hearted volunteers’ returns who’d said someone was eligible but really wasn’t.

To pick up inconsistencies, to challenge the findings. And vitally important, to convene an international medical forensic panel (of friends and friends of friends) to debate the probable cause of death of certain

cases, and determine whether it had its roots at Gallipoli. The data held.

I then wrote a database to hold the data so the information was at my fingertips, followed by more sifting, more testing, more investigations by everyone involved. A brilliant, collaborative project with an outcome everyone said wasn’t possible. It was. We ate an elephant, one bite at a time.

What it means now is that Western Australia is the only State with an accurate list of their Gallipoli dead. I am immensely proud of that.

Because of the database, I can also search on specifics, like ‘How many 11th Battalion men were killed in the taking of Leane’s Trench the night of 31 July/1 August 1915?’ The answer is 36, with all the names easily extracted into a neat list. What could be better?

ANZAC Day CommemorativeMarch PROTOCOLS

The Dawn Service, Gunfire Breakfast, ANZAC Day Parade, and ANZAC Day Commemorative Service are the prime opportunities to remember those who gave so much for our country – especially those who are no longer with us.

In respect of participating in the ANZAC Day Commemorative March, participants should be aware that the consensus of the returned servicemen and women, who form the body of this March, is that they be allowed to retain the integrity of their individual units for as long as possible.

While they recognise the importance of, and respect the participation of next of kin (NOK), they request the following guidelines be observed by all participants:

• All marchers should conform to forming up and marching 4 abreast.

• Veterans should march directly behind their unit banner, accompanied by one carer if needed. That carer should be

of an age where they directly assist the veteran.

• Veterans having difficulty completing the March are encouraged to use the transport provided, but must remain in the vehicle until the March is complete.

• If a veteran must fall out of the March, he/she should be directed to a Marshall for assistance. Unit Associations should continue so as not to disrupt the movement of the March.

• NOK should march behind the veterans and be old enough to march the full distance without assistance. Please note baby prams are not permitted.

• NOK representation should be restricted to 1 per veteran. Attire should be neat and tidy out of respect to the fallen (torn denim, sporting attire, dirty joggers etc are not acceptable standards).

• Carrying pictures of relatives is not supported.

• NOK are to wear medals on the right breast (left breast is reserved for the original owners).

• Media services have been advised not to conduct interviews ‘on the move’ during the march.

• Veterans are requested not to join or leave the march other then at the Assembly or Dispersal points.

• Only recognised National Flags are to be carried in the Parade

• Please note that this is not a cultural parade but a March for ADF, and Ex-Service personnel, and National Dress and NOK not wearing medals is not supported.

We would be grateful if you adopted these guidelines and by doing so you will not only honour your fallen comrades and forebears, but you will also help maintain the ANZAC tradition we are all so proud of.

Anzac Voices is the story of Gallipoli, told by those who lived through it: regular troops, senior commanders,

stretcher-bearers, signal operators, a nurse and a Turkish general, as well as Australia’s

official war correspondent.

Recorded between 1953 and 1990, the compelling and deeply emotional first-hand accounts drawn from the ABC Archives recall in graphic detail the circumstances and events of the Gallipoli campaign, from the innocence of enlistment to the horror of the landing and – for those who lived to tell their story – the bitter relief of homecoming.

The transcendent voice of music interweaves these accounts, providing a poignant musical reflection on this nation-defining event from composers including Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edward Elgar, Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards and Frederick Septimus Kelly, whose Elegy was sketched behind the lines at Gallipoli.

2-CD album available now from ABC Shops, ABC Centres and ABC Shop online, all good music retailers, and for download from iTunes.

ANZAC Club – arrangements for membersFollowing extensive member feedback regarding access to ANZAC Club on ANZAC day, we have reviewed eligible attendance for this special day.

For the benefit of members access to ANZAC House and ANZAC Club on 25 April will be strictly limited to the following:

• Members - by display of either badge or membership card

• A guest of a member – Limit of one (1) guest who must be co-signed into the visitors’ register.

• ADF members – either wearing ADF uniform or producing an ADF ID Card

This has been introduced so that members receive the benefit of their club on this one special day of the year. Even with this restriction on entry, there may still be times when the club holds the maximum allowable number of people and a queue may still form at peak times until access can be granted.

As in previous years, the club will operate a marquee in Irwin street for overflow – this is where non-members will be directed on the day and members who wish to use the facility are of course most welcome to do so. The same maximum numbers restrictions apply to this area and, there may be times when the limit is reached and a queue may form for this also.

The very popular set menu lunch for ESO groups held in the Gallipoli room is filling up fast – if your ex-service or unit association has not secured a booking for this please contact the club on 9287 3799 to avoid disappointment as space is strictly limited and allocated on a first come first serve basis. Those booked and attending this lunch will also be provided with a special priority access card.

A light lunch and snack menu will also be available in the club dining room on the day and as with everything else, space is limited and bookings are allocated on a first come first serve basis.

A Gunfire Breakfast will also be available in the Club on the day costing only $12 and members are most welcome to attend.

So please don’t forget – wear your RSL Member’s badge on the day – or keep your membership card handy as these will be the only way access may be gained to the club on the day.

Gallipoli Dead from Western Australia Project – the ListThe Gallipoli Dead from Western Australia project was a collaborative one proposed and led by PLC Archivist Shannon Lovelady. The project was achieved by volunteers, completely unsubsidised, and involved data contributions from the private and government sectors, research volunteers and an international forensic medical assessment panel.

We now know 1023* West Australian soldiers died as a result of their service at Gallipoli, a campaign that began with the Anzac Landing of 25 April 1915 and ended with the final evacuation on 20 December 1915, after the campaign’s futility was realised.

Making Sense of the ResultsThe parameters of the project were that each one of these men must

have: been born or enlisted in WA; or lived in WA for some time; and died from wounds received or illness contracted at Gallipoli between 25 April 1915 and 31 August 1921 (the official Commonwealth War Graves Commission end date for consideration as war dead).

Casualties by Battalion /RegimentThe largest casualties were suffered by the 11th Battalion, followed by the 16th Battalion, the 10th Light Horse Regiment, 12th and 28th Battalions, all those raised wholly or partly in WA.

But the soldiers in the Gallipoli Dead from Western Australia project came from a wide range of units raised all over Australia. The State(s) in which

each unit was raised is in brackets. Casualties per unit correspond.

Message from Richard Goyder AO

Managing Director Wesfarmers

Much has rightly been written and said about the significance of Gallipoli and World War I in shaping the character of the Australia we live in today. As those events recede further in time, it is even more important we preserve the memory of those who were prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice on unfamiliar battlegrounds far from home. In doing so, they helped to forge a young nation committed to freedom, equality and mateship.

Wesfarmers has been honoured to support a number of projects which encourage enduring reflection on the Anzac spirit and legacy. They include the Anzac Convoy Walk and Lookout at Albany, part of

the National Anzac Centre which opened last November on the centenary of the departure of the troops destined for Gallipoli.

On the eve of the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli, we are pleased

to again partner with the State branch of the RSL to support the publication of the full list of more than 1000 individuals from Western Australia who died during that terrible campaign.

A disproportionately high number of young Western Australians, many from farming and rural regions, eagerly signed up for a journey that would see them join the invasion in 1915 of what is now known as Anzac Cove. Their displays of selfless bravery amid the carnage which followed have been described as astounding.

Wesfarmers salutes these and the tens of thousands of other Australian soldiers who died at Gallipoli and in World War I. We also thank the many other Australian men and women who have served in subsequent military conflicts over the past century to continue to defend our, and others’, freedom.

1915 Deaths per MonthAfter the landing on 25 April, an official tally was not taken until 2 May, so many who actually died at the landing have an official date of

death of 2 May. Bloody Angle, which decimated the 16th Battalion, was also on 2 May.

Most deaths occurred in August during battles of the Second Offensive, including the taking of Leane’s Trench on the night of 31 July/1 August and the suicidal dawn charge of the 10th Light Horse Regiment at the Nek on 7 August.

But it wasn’t just battles in which these West Australians died. Shelling, machine gun and rifle fire was almost continual and lethal Turkish snipers took a heavy toll. Nowhere was safe, not even in your dugout, having a break, or while using the latrine.

Age breakdown (age on enlistment)Going on the age given on enlistment, the youngest soldier was 17 and the oldest, 47. The average age of eligible Gallipoli Dead from Western Australia soldiers is 26. A lot of lying was going on in the upper and lower ranges, however. Many in the younger and older ranges were even younger or older than they admitted.*The project is complete but will not be closed, as those who fought for other Forces are still accepted for examination by submission. Similarly, for those deemed ineligible due to lack of any ties to WA, I am happy to be presented with proof and if necessary, re-examine their eligibility.
