It is a condition where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly

This means a person’s blood sugar levels are higher than normal

•It is linked with high cholesterol which significantly increases the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), more than 371 million people across the globe have diabetes and this figure is predicted to rise to over 550 million by 2030.

According to NHS choices, in the year 2010 in England, there were approximately 3.1 million people aged 16 and over with diabetes.

By 2030, this figure is expected to rise to 4.6 million, with 90% of those affected having type 2 diabetes.

There are 2 types of diabetes

TYPE 1This type of diabetes is normally common in children and sometimes during pregnancy.

TYPE 2It normally affects people over 40 but has recently started affecting children, teens and young adults.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that permanently destroys beta cells in the pancreas, meaning that the body can no longer produce insulin.

Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes

•Increased thirst

•Fatigue

•Frequent urination

•Loss of weight

•Skin infections

Type 2 is the common form of diabetes with over 2.6 million people in the UK.

There is not enough insulin in the blood and as a result the cells are only partially unlocked and glucose builds up in the blood.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes

•Obesity

•Headaches

•Frequent urination

•Increased thirst

•Dry mouth

•Blurred vision

As of now there is no known cure for diabetes.

There are treatments that contain synthetic versions of insulin in the form of pills or injections.

The exact cause for diabetes is unknown.

Until researchers and scientist can find the root of this condition, there is little chance of finding a cure.

Breakthrough in the near futureA Harvard scientist has defied most odds and is a step closer to creating a cure for type 1 diabetes.

After 23 years of research Doug Melton, a Harvard professor with his team of scientist had a breakthrough.

After his son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a baby, Doug Melton has been trying to find a cure.

The research resulted in a method for generating functional insulin producing cells in large numbers.
