A Message from Lynne Sampson from Gambler’s Help Southern
My name is Lynne Sampson and I’m employed as a therapeutic counsellor in Frankston by Gambler’s Help
Southern. As this newsletter is focussed around positive ageing, I thought to introduce to you a potential aspect of
ageing - the notion of loss and loneliness. As a younger person, we didn’t imagine becoming older - we generally
moved in and out of friendships, we may have had family members or other people in our lives – or we may have
enjoyed just spending time with ourselves. We were potentially employed, involved in daily activities, had a reason
to get up in the morning, possibly played sport, helped out at the local school, or been busy with all sorts of other
pursuits.
Reaching our ‘senior’ (wisdom) years, into our 60’s and beyond, we may have experienced children leaving home,
we may have lost parents, lost friendships, for reasons to do with death, moving house or otherwise. We may no
longer be employed, could potentially experience chronic illness and/or disability that doesn’t permit us to be as
active as once we were; or on the other hand, we could be quite active and attending our local gym! Importantly
we try to fill the void by enjoying numerous activities or hobbies and connecting with other people; on the other
hand, we simply may struggle with finding ourselves on our own, experience difficulty in making new connections,
and subsequently experience loneliness. Waking in the morning with only yourself as a company – with no
significant people around may cause loneliness. Important to remember though, some people relish living on their
own – we all deal with loss and being alone in different ways.
Sometimes as we age, some people feel sad, depressed, miss having a loved one and some people may also feel
some anxiety. Often we are grieving – over people, the life we had, over countless things. Most of us don’t like to
feel these sorts of feelings and we can do pretty much anything to try to push them away. Some of the things we
may do could be drinking too much alcohol, staying in bed, or gambling. Working with Gambler’s Help Southern it
is not unusual for people to speak with me about such things, telling me how gambling and/or drinking can be an
escape from the feelings of loneliness, anxiety or isolation– not having to spend time in an empty home on your
own. There are many ways to manage the feelings of anxiety, depression and loneliness and one way is to speak
with a counsellor – a confidential service, where you can be encouraged to learn strategies you can weave into your
everyday life. Gambling, playing at the pokies can be so expensive, the machines can ‘eat’ your money, and this, in
turn, can create further feelings of anxiety and isolation. Bearing this in mind our service also employs a Financial
Counsellor and I hope to expand upon this in a further segment. If you would like to speak with one of our
counsellors – in Frankston or Rosebud, please phone one of our friendly Intake people on 9575.5353. Gambler’s
Help is free, confidential and supportive and we also offer Skype sessions.
During the months of May and June, Lynne is available on Wednesdays between 1 and 2 pm to take your call
if you contact 9575 5353 you can leave a name and contact number ask to speak with Lynne – who will return your
call – if you wish to remain anonymous, leave a pseudonym.

Volunteer of the Year Awards
Do you know a dedicated volunteer in the Frankston community who deserves to be recognised for their
contribution? Then you should nominate them in this year’s Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Established by Impact Volunteering in partnership with Frankston City Council in 2017, the awards aim to celebrate
and recognise the valuable contributions that volunteers make to the local community, with the overall winner
collecting a $1,000 prize for their volunteer organisation.
When you nominate a worthy candidate, you’ll be highlighting the great work they do as a volunteer as well as
creating awareness for the work of their volunteer organisation in the community.
Winners will be presented with their awards at the Mayor’s Family Picnic in September.
