Postdoc Positions

The Staudt laboratory of the Metabolism Branch, Center for Cancer Research,

National Cancer Institute seeks applications for post-doctoral fellowships focusing

on the pathogenesis and therapeutic targeting of lymphoidmalignancies. Arecurrent

theme is that transcription factors and signaling proteins that regulate normal lympho-

cyte differentiation and function are co-opted by the lymphoid malignancies (Staudt

et al.,Adv Immunol 2005 87:163). The laboratory uses a variety of high-throughput

techniques to uncover and elucidate key genetic events in the development of lym-

phomas and multiple myeloma, including gene expression profiling, array-based

comparative genomic hybridization, genome-wide chromatin immunopreciptation

analysis, and next-generation gene resequencingwith Solexa technology (e.g. Lenz et

al. Science 2008). In a complementary approach, the laboratory uses RNA interfer-

ence libraries to conduct “Achilles heel” screen for genes that are required for the

proliferation and survival of cancer cells (Ngo et al. Nature 2006 441:106; Shaffer

et al. Nature 2008, in press). The highly collaborative group of 16 researchers in the

Staudt laboratory additionally benefit from participation in an international research

consortium known as the Lymphoma/Leukemia Molecular Profiling Project. The

successful candidate will have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree with a strong publica-

tion record in molecular biology, immunology or oncology and less than 5 years of

post-doctoral experience. United States citizenship is not required but proficiency

in English is essential. Please submit curriculum vitae and 3 letters of reference to:

Louis M. Staudt, M. D., Ph.D., Deputy Chief, Metabolism Branch, CCR,NCI,

Bldg. 10, Rm. 4N114, NIH, 9000 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20892.

POSTDOCTORALPOSITIONS IN STRUCTURALBIOLOGY

Several postdoctoral positions are available in the Macromolecular Crystallography Laboratory, National Cancer Institute (NCI),

Frederick,MD,USA(http://mcl1.ncifcrf.gov). The Protein Structure Section (PSS, headed byA.Wlodawer) has an extensive program

investigating structure-function relationships in proteolytic enzymes such as HIV and HTLV proteases, Lon, sedolisin, and VirA.

It also investigates crystal structures of antiviral lectins, proteins of immunological interest, as well as proteins involved in tumor

suppression and translation regulation. The Macromolecular Assembly Structure and Cell Signaling Section (MASCSS, headed by

J. Lubkowski) is involved in structural and functional studies of such immunologically-important proteins as ligands of chemokine

receptors (chemokines, defensins, etc.), members of the TREM family, and enzymes from the Arf-GAP family. It also participates

in structure-based design of new inhibitors of human glutamate carboxypeptidases II and III. Postdoctoral fellows in the PSS and

MASCSS require a strong background in protein crystallography, as well as in protein expression and characterization. The Protein

Engineering Section (headed by D. Waugh) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to spearhead the development of advanced technology

for the production of recombinant proteins in eukaryotic expression systems, including yeast, insect, and mammalian cells. She/he

will engage in basic research geared towardmaking fundamental improvements in these systems for applications in structural biology.

The ideal candidate will have a sound background in eukaryotic molecular biology/genetics and expression of recombinant proteins

in one or more eukaryotic systems. Familiarity with protein purification techniques would be an advantage.

These positions are open to recent Ph.D. recipients with fewer than 5 years of postdoctoral experience. The minimum annual starting

stipend at NCI is $46,200 for new graduates, with additional increases based on previous postdoctoral experience. NCI provides full

health insurance, as well as relocation benefits. Interested candidates should apply to: Dr.AlexanderWlodawer, Dr. Jacek Lubkowski,
