Bismarck-Mandan is economically diverse, fast growing and dynamic. Centrally located in North America and just south of North Dakota’s “Energy Corridor,” this area is in the midst of economic growth, giving residents amazing opportunities.

Rich in the history of exploration and adventure, the true birth of these sister cities was in the late 1800s as the Transcontinental Railroad was being built. More than an area of iron and steam, Bismarck-Mandan was a resting place for Lewis & Clark, as well as the final residence of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Cavalry before the Battle of Little Bighorn.

If the idea of living in an economical-ly flourishing and active community piques your interest, Bismarck-Man-dan may be the place for you to plant your roots. With continued growth and development occurring, there is certainly no lack of prospects, no matter your interests or specialties. From nationally known shopping establishments to locally owned niches, there are not just possibilities, but probabilities.

The MSA surpasses 125,000 people. Bismarck-Mandan is transitioning from a big town to a mid-sized city, and we have the jobs, retail and residential growth to prove it. In livability.com’s Best Places to Live 2016, Bismarck not only ranked in the top 100 — it was rated #7 out of 2,100 cities. The business climate is thriving in Bismarck-Mandan. The Milken Institute ranks Bismarck- Mandan as #4 Best Small City in the United States. The community consistently ranks in the top 5 for economic growth:#3 in 5-year job growth#3 in 5-year wages/salaries growth

The Bismarck-Mandan region embodies authentic opportunity. There is no place more authen-tic and real than our region - we are hard-working and embrace our no nonsense Midwestern values. The opportunities available in Bismarck-Mandan is why people are flocking here from across the nation. Our region has become a bastian of those seeking the American Dream. With innovation and inspiration embedded into the soil, the residents of Bismarck-Mandan seem to work with those same ideals. We support avibrant energy industry, two major medical facili-ties, a host of technical service companies and many other innovative businesses both large and small. There is more to our community than work, however. Bismarck-Mandan offers excellent opportunities to participate in outdoor activities, a variety of sporting events and cultural events. Whether you prefer music, dancing, hunting, hik-ing, theater, art or bull riding, Bismarck-Mandan has it all.

Holding fast to a strong work ethic, Bismarck-Mandan workers thrive on the values of hardwork, honesty and respect. Bismarck-Mandan has been making national headlines for its low unem-ployment rate. To offer a snapshot, the unemploy-ment rate for Bismarck-Mandan was 2.9% in July 2015 compared to 5.3% for the United States. The community has among the lowest unemploy-ment rates in the nation.

Bismarck-Mandan is recognized as the region’s business and financial center, as well as aprinciple area for development. There are dozens of financial institutions in the community with continued construction of new facilities. In ad-dition to private institutions, Bismarck is home to the only state-owned bank in the nation, the Bank of North Dakota. Beyond banking, there are numerous investment, accounting and other financial institutions, all stable and continuing to see growth.

The energy industry is paramount to the suc-cess of Bismarck-Mandan and North Dakota as a whole. The large reserves of lignite coal, natural gas and oil make North Dakota a net exporter of natural gas and electricity. The energy industry employs more than 10,000 people locally. North Dakota has been in the national spotlight for the development of the Bakken shale play, but energy in North Dakota isn’t just all about oil. Western North Dakota is part of a region containing more than 800-years worth of economically recoverable

lignite coal. North and northwest of Bismarck-Mandan, four lignite coal mines are in full opera-tion. Combined, these four mines produce about 30 million tons of coal annually. More than 2 mil-lion homes, farms and businesses in the upper Midwest use the coal-based electricity produced in North Dakota.

The history of North Dakota is rich in agriculture. Nearly 24% of North Dakota’s people are em-ployed directly by production agriculture or in agriculture-related industries.

A community that sprang up along the rails, Bismarck-Mandan has always been on track with transportation. Throughout the years, transportation interests have expanded from the rails to include boats, airplanes, cars, buses and trucks.

Bismarck and Mandan have seen an influx of growth in recent years as families have movedfrom all over the country to put down roots in North Dakota’s thriving economy.

The quality of life is unparalleled with top notch schools, acres of greenspace and a welcoming community feel. Safety is high and crime is low. From Bismarck’s Cathedral Historic District to newly developed Downtown Mandan apartments, Bismarck and Mandan offer a wide variety of housing options. Currently in development is the proposed FiveSouth development in Downtown Bismarck. This proposed mixed-use development will incorporate housing, shopping, foodand entertainment options - popular with the growing young professional crowd.

When it comes to education, Bismarck-Mandan takes no chances. We demand quality education from pre-school through post-graduate degrees. Whether public or private, education is a top priority for the community.
