Portuguese Government in the East

1505- Francisco De Almeida was appointed first Viceroy of Portuguese India which established the Portuguese government in the east.

Goa became the headquarters of the Portuguese state in India in 1510

Colonization of Brazil In 1534 John III organized the colonization of Brazil. In order to ensure

that the Portuguese stay in brazil, he divided up the land and appointed 15 noblemen to be the captains. They were to build settlements and administer justice. They were responsible for the costs and development. Only two of these captains succeeded

He then created the first general government and appointed Tome de Sousa as the governor. Sousa built Salvador, which is the capital of Brazil.

Many colonies were lost and Spain & Portugal parted unions.

A French colony was destroyed at Guanabara Bay and Rio de Janeiro was then founded.

Present Day Brazil Government

1822- Pedro de Alcantara who was the son of the Portuguese king, proclaimed Brazil’s independence from Portugal.

Is now governed by president Lula ( head of state and head of government)
