Our Region

Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro is a

mountainous region with concave valleys and not very high plateaus, included in the Douro River watershed. In this region the main activities are agriculture, ( olives, almond, grapes ) rearing cattle and local tourism.

Page 31: Portugal

The Douro river majestuously meanders its waters around the huge granitical hills, flowing from its source in Spain near Las Arribas del Duero, across northern central Spain and Portugal to its outlet at Porto. Its total length is 897km, of which only sections of the Portuguese reaches of the river are navigable.

Page 32: Portugal

In the north part of the country, the Douro is undoubtedly unique, offering us a scenery of surpassing natural beauty, a real “excess of Nature”.

Page 33: Portugal

So beautiful is this region that a particular view of a bend in the Douro River from a hilltop above is considered a breathtaking sight. Endless miles of terraced vineyards in what was actually the world´s first officially demarcated wine growing region.

olive oil production.

As well as the famous Port Wine, regular red and white wines are produced on the valley. They are a good accompaniment to the local cuisine.

The scenery of the Douro Valley is spectacular with the variations of colour in accordance with the seasons, and it is particularly beautiful in autumn when the vines take a reddish and golden colour.

Almond is widely planted in Trás-os- Montes. Almond trees are frequently grown side by side with olives and vines. It is wonderful to visit the region in the springtime when almond trees are in full blossom.

Page 37: Portugal

Honey production is also an important activity of the region.
