About The Wichita Center for the Arts
The Wichita Center for the Arts Board of Trustees
The Wichita Center for the Arts is pleased to sponsor the Pastel National 2014 Exhibition. This event is made possible thanks to underwriting from the Fred C. and Mary R. Koch Foundation.
The Pastel National Exhibition features one of the art disciplines we teach and support at the Center, and allows our members, students and community at large to view the direction of pastel media nationally. The next Pastel National Exhibition will be presented March 2016.

First of all I want to thank each and every artist who submitted work to be juried. This is a brave thing. Entering your works for public scrutiny and viewing can be very difficult and stressful, but it is ultimately a lovely gift that your give to yourself, art admirers and those who support your work. You are sharing both the work and a piece of yourself.
There is nothing I’d rather do than paint. It is simply my happy place. When I approach my own work I’m hoping for a little magic; that special place where my skills meet my ideas and a painting simply flows through me, it paints itself and is effortless. It doesn’t happen very often. I’m hoping for that place where the science, craft and the poetry (expression of the human experience), meet and dance together, a place where the conflicts of painting mesh...nuance and bold authoritative expression.
When I approach and access another artist’s work, and I do so very humbly, I’m looking for that foundation of science and craft and hoping for that extra something; the poetry. The medium of pastel particularly affords these chance moments of magic; it’s immediacy, it’s glittering particles sitting up on the paper surface, it’s fragility and it’s fleeting and ethereal quality. To all of the award winners who caught a little magic, congratulations. May it happen very frequently for you!
A quick word about the awards. I chose the top awards, then the merit awards which I gave in no particular order. A quick mention regarding framing; I realize it can be a huge expense, however it can make a huge difference in your work. It is a worthy investment in work that deserves to be presented in the best possible light.
