IN THIS MONTH’S ISSUE…
The year seems to be moving forward at an alarming rate doesn’t it? I can’t believe Easter is already creeping up on us… We have had another great month at Portmore the most notable part being the launch of our new practice video.
The main message we want to convey to everyone is that we pride ourselves
in providing a great experience for all our patients, old and new, irrespective of
the type of treatment they are having at the Practice. The Portmore team are
a family and we genuinely care for all our patients from the very moment they
walk in the door. We hope you enjoy the video.
The team are really looking forward to our trip to The Dentistry Show next
month at the Birmingham NEC. The 2-day conference has some fantastic
seminars and workshops led by internationally renowned speakers, it will be
a chance for us all to learn new techniques and hear new ideas in order to
continually improve our patient experience and stay ahead of the game. Of
course, we are also very excited for our team night out in Birmingham.
Welcome

TEAM Q&A
Q1:
What is your role at
Portmore, what do you
do on a day to day basis?
I am Head dental nurse
at Portmore. On a daily
basis, my job involves
assisting Eben with dental
procedures, making
patients feel comfortable
and relaxed during
treatments. I am also
involved in record keeping,
such as medical emergency
drugs and surgery
checklists, ensuring these
are all checked and up to
date daily is an important
part of my job!

TEAM Q&AQ2:
What is your favourite
aspect of your role?
I particularly enjoy
assisting with smile
makeovers; seeing the
transformation from start
to finish is great- you get
to see something new
everyday with dental
nursing! I also enjoy
helping the rest of the
nursing team out if they
need anything and
working as a part of a
team with them. Q3:
If I wasn’t working at
Portmore I would be…?
I would be spending
most days shopping for
shoes and clothes and the
rest of the time lying on
a white sand beach
drinking cocktails!
Q4:
My guilty pleasure is…
I definitely have a few!!
The first would have to be
shoes and clothes – I am
forever shopping and could
do it everyday if my bank
balance allowed! My other
guilty pleasure would have
to be chocolate, although
I do try to resist as much
as possible!
Q5:
Outside of work I love…
Going for long walks. I
really want a puppy to take
with me! I enjoy keeping
fit by running but enjoy
this more in the spring/
summer. I also enjoy going
out to nice restaurants
with my boyfriend or
friends and having a
few cocktails.
Q6: What I will be
doing in 2015…
I will be continuing my
role as head nurse as well
as going on some exciting
courses to gain new skills.
Outside of work I am
also very much looking
forward to the summer
and booking a holiday to
get some sun!

What are white fillings
made from?
White fillings, or Tooth
Coloured Restorations
(TCR’s) as I like to call them,
are made of a composite
resin or porcelain.
Why have white fillings
become so popular ?
TCR’s have boomed mainly
because of the improved
aesthetics or appearance
compared to traditional
metal fillings. Patients are
also more aware
of the potential risks
involved in placing amalgam
fillings that contain
potentially toxic mercury,
so for patients that are very
health conscious, white
fillings are a natural choice.
How long do they last?
Will I need to have
then replaced?
Porcelain inlays are the
preferred treatment for
replacing big metal fillings
when they fail. These
restorations can last a very
long time if well cared for. I
have seen porcelain inlays
well over thirty years old.
Composite resin fillings
can also last for a long time
if used in the correct way
with a lifespan of around
8-10 years.
Can I have all my
silver fillings replaced
straight away?
We usually replace metal
fillings when they break or
fail, but we assess every
situation individually
and there are instances
where we replace all metal
fillings in one visit, upon
the patient’s request. We
find nowadays that many

patients who have had silver
amalgam fillings for some
time are very keen to simply
replace them all in one go to
achieve to healthier, more
natural appearance.
My previous dentist
advised that white fillings
are not as strong as metal
fillings, is this true?
No. When chosen wisely
and placed correctly,
TCR’s will have the same
integral strength as a
metal restoration. This is
due to the fact that they
are bonded to the tooth
enamel rather than simply
‘plugged’ into place like old-
fashioned silver fillings. The
bond on tooth/enamel is
extremely strong.
How long does it take to
replace my existing fillings?
Small white fillings can be
placed in around 30 minutes
and it can take a bit longer
for bigger ones. The key
here is to ensure that we
keep any moisture at bay
to ensure a strong bond.
Essentially, we take as long
as it takes, but as a guide
we could replace 3-4 metal
fillings with composite
fillings in a couple of hours.
Great for those patients
who are time poor and want
instant results.
Will people be able to tell
if I have white fillings?
We choose the shade of
your restorations very
carefully and it should be
almost impossible to tell
where they are placed. The
final result is very natural,
almost like having your own
teeth back again.
Are all my teeth suitable
for white fillings? What are
the alternatives?
Most teeth can be restored
with TCR’s. However if the
fillings are too big, we also
have the option of restoring
a tooth with a crown, which
would be more suitable.
A crown can be made to
mimic nature and should
also blend in with all your
other teeth.
Can you put white fillings
in my front teeth?
Yes. TCR’s are usually
perfect for restoring front
teeth and we routinely
achieve excellent results
where it is impossible to see
where the teeth begin and
the filling material ends.

At Portmore we believe that the cornerstone
and foundation of exceptional dental health
is oral hygiene. We have a very preventative
and holistic approach to dental hygiene and
therapy at the practice which we believe
promotes long term oral health and a healthy,
beautiful smile for life.
Our Hygienists and therapists provide a range
of treatments to promote long term health
and have extensive training and education
designed to ensure that they are at the very
front of modern prevention techniques.
Optimal gum health is absolutely crucial to
ensure healthy teeth for life. Your gums act as
a foundation, if they become infected or you
develop periodontal disease your jaw bone
will become damaged and start to shrink
away. This means that almost certainly your
teeth and dentistry will be affected as well. A
good analogy is thinking about renovating an
old house, if you paper over cracks in a wall no
matter how fancy the wallpaper is, the cracks
will eventually come through. The same with
oral health, no matter how beautiful the
dentistry we provide, if your gums are not
healthy, the dentistry will almost certainly fail.
Traditionally, patients have visited the dental
hygienist for a ‘scale and polish’, in reality the
treatment itself is so much more than that.
Our hygienists do so much more than simply
‘clean’ the teeth, we have the instruments
and techniques available to ensure that we
clean areas below the gum that you cannot
reach yourself with traditional home-care
techniques. This is essential for long-term
gum health as bacteria and toxins will tend to
cluster and grow in these hard to reach areas,
if they are not regularly removed a simple
case of minor gum disease can very rapidly
turn into Periodontitis, which requires 3
monthly maintenance for the rest of your life.
Whether you are seeking dental implants,
orthodontics or cosmetic dentistry, it is
very likely that your treatment programme
will begin with your dental hygienist or
therapist. Some of the services they may
provide are as follows:
PORTMORE HYGIENE SPA NOT “JUST A CLEAN”…We have a preventative and holistic approach to hygiene at Portmore.

• Assessment of current condition – which
will include measurement of gum health,
pocket depth (the area below the gum).
• Assessment of dietary health.
• Assessment of medical health
• We may provide a bespoke treatment
plan – which will include a series of
appointments in our Hygiene Spa to
include professional deep cleaning to
remove plaque and tarter.
• Home care education – we will advise and
recommend bespoke home care products
to suit your lifestyle – these can include
electric toothbrushes, specific toothpastes
& mouthwashes and a range of Tee-Pee
brushes, floss picks and dental tape.
• We can show you the areas you may be
missing when cleaning by using disclosing
fluid. This is a real eye opener and makes
you realise how little time you spend
cleaning your teeth and how much more
thorough you need to be in order to remove
all the plaque that collects on a daily basis.
• We can apply a range of topical fluorides
and enamel sealants to help prevent caries
(decay) – an ideal treatment for children.
In terms of cost, a visit to our Hygiene Spa is
very best investment that you can make in
your overall health as it can help prevent so
many future problems and also enhance the
longevity of any dental treatment that you may
have had. Like any
other kind of major
investment such as
a car or a kitchen, a
Smile Design for example
needs routine maintenance
and care to ensure optimal performance.
Certainly for those patients who are
undergoing comprehensive surgical treatment
such as Implants, visits to the Hygienist are
an integral part of the treatment plan and we
would recommend ongoing 3 monthly visits to
ensure your new teeth last a lifetime.
As well as gum maintenance and treating
Periodontal Disease our Therapists can
provide many other treatments such as
luxury diamond polishing, home tooth
whitening and VIP laser tooth whitening. Our
Diamond Shine treatment in particular is in
high demand and gives amazing results. This
luxury treatment removes ingrained staining
by releasing micro-crystals onto the enamel
at high pressure, this is followed by a diamond
gloss polish to deliver a smile that is brighter,
whiter and stain free all in 30 mins! Whatever
your needs, please don’t put off your visit to
the Hygienist, they can help you to enjoy a
healthy smile and live life with confidence.

Airflow
If it is stain removal you are after our
Diamond Shine or Refresh and Shine
package is very popular. This uses Airflow,
which is a mix of bicarbonate of soda, water
and air that effectively removes tough stains
even from in between the teeth. It delivers
fine micro-crystals under high pressure to
gently but effectively remove stains, even
those tough intrinsic stains that you can’t
remove with a normal ‘polish’.
If it is the actual shade of your tooth that
would like to make whiter then tooth
whitening is for you.
Home Whitening
Home whitening involves having
impressions taken and whitening trays
made, the tooth whitening is then carried
out at home with the whitening gel that we
provide. Home whitening is great because it
allows the patient to whiten their teeth at a
time that suits them so it’s very convenient.
It also allows you to be very precise with the
result, you simply stop when you feel your
teeth are white enough. Home whitening is
also fantastic value for money as once you
have had the trays made, you simply need
to purchase the whitening gel in order to
‘top-up’ a few times a year. We continue to
see great results at the practice with home
whitening and find for most patients, this is
their treatment of choice.
Zoom Whitening
Zoom whitening is an in house treatment; it
uses state of the art UV light technology and
has the option to provide a ‘boost’ to the
final shade that is achieved. The treatment
is carried out by your dental Therapist and
takes around 2 hours to complete while you

lie back and relax in the chair. Zoom is great
for those patients who are time poor, or who
want an instant result for that important
party, wedding or holiday. Impressions and
whitening trays are also made so that tops
ups can be carried out at home.
Tooth whitening is very popular and very
effective at revitalising that lovely smile for
the summer sun.
Sensitive teeth?
Sensitivity is a very common problem
amongst patients and many suffer in silence.
CAUSES
• Side effect of tooth whitening
• Erosion- loss of tooth structure due to chemical dissolution by acid
• Abrasion- loss of tooth structure by mechanical forces
• Gum Recession
TREATMENT
Sensitivity caused from tooth whitening
usually only lasts for a short period after the
whitening treatment. Zoom whitening can
also help reduce the risk of sensitivity as the
whitening process can be well controlled
within the surgery.
Restorative treatments are available to help
with sensitivity caused by erosion or from
gum recession, from simple white fillings to
veneers, there are so many options available.
Those of us who are clenchers or grinders
can find sensitivity a problem. A mouth guard
is an effective way of helping with this.
THERE ARE SO MANY OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO ACHIEVE THAT PERFECT SMILE HERE AT PORTMORE.
