Happy New Year! Lynne and I would like to start by thanking Commodore

Dave Simonson and First Lady Donna for a fantastic 2017. From the New Year’s Gala to the Santa Brunch, Dave and Donna have put their stamp on 2017, and the result has been outstanding events, great cruises, continued improvement of member services and projects completed, including the Bob and Kathy Eaton Bar, the replacement of J row, the modification of A row and the installation of the new Breakwater (BW). 2017 was truly a banner year for PYC.

Of course, all those projects were not finished by them-selves. We owe so much to all the volunteers that con-stantly step up to do everything from replacing docks, building the new bar, keeping up the club’s website, decorating the club for all the events and cookouts, and then put them on. That’s not to mention the Portlight, the Roster, the Calendar, the Library, the Cruises, the finance committee, the membership committee (who brought in 30 new members!), and of course the board of trustees. I could go on and on. My point is that PYC is literally built on the shoulders of our volunteers. They are PYC’s most valuable asset and will continue to be in 2018.

By the time you read this we will have celebrated the New Year and will be looking forward to the Commo-dores Ball, as well as thinking about the Crab Feed and Valentine’s Dinner. This year also marks PYC’s 110th anniversary: we will celebrate our history by a combina-tion of Portlight articles, cookout presentations, photo displays and a “dinghy cruise” in August to our property on Tomahawk Island for an old fashioned hot dog BBQ like the club used to do in those old black and white photos you can find in the history room.

We would also like to replicate 2008 on Opening Day. That year PYC was represented by more than 110 boats, so get your flags ready. There will be no shortage of fun things going on at PYC in 2018.

There will be plenty of cruising action this year, with the usual list of cruises, starting with the casual New Year’s cruise and closely followed by the St. Patrick’s Cruise. Watch for a couple of no-host cruises to Government Island and St. Helens.

COMMODORE’S COMMENTSBy Frank Bocarde

Perhaps most exciting, we are planning to have a Ren-dezvous in Port Ludlow the first weekend in August. This event will allow members to spend a few days in a gorgeous bay with resort-level amenities. Port Ludlow has a wonderful Inn for members who would like to arrive by land, as well as a full-service marina with a tent that will accommodate 100 people, a restaurant to cater events and the Port Ludlow Yacht Club where we have reciprocal privileges. Watch for developing plans and a sign-up list in the coming months.

We also honor our history through our sailing pro-gram. The regattas we hold, the scholarship program for young sailors, the amazing accomplishments of our sailors, from circumnavigating, to cruising for three years with three young children, to winning many of the major sailing events in the northwest, PYC has much to be proud of. All members should plan to attend The Sailor’s Dinner in April when we will celebrate several of these accomplishments.

With all the recent changes to the moorage, 2018 will be relatively quiet for the Moorage Upgrade Committee as we focus our efforts on renewing permits and paying our bills.

House and Grounds is planning to install the doors between the ballroom, dining room and Kelly Bar and Eaton Bar, and segment the sound system to divide the club by area to allow multiple events at the same time. With this upgrade, except for major events, such as large weddings, club members will have more access to their club. And of course, with the expanded food and bar service schedule developed over the past year we will have even more opportunities to sample Chef Paco’s wonderful cuisine.

As your Commodore, I want this year to continue to bond our membership together. Along those lines, Lynne and I have chosen “We are Family” as our 2018 theme. Yes, that’s the Sister Sledge Song, but it also represents our commonality of purpose at PYC, whether we are “sail” or “power,” young or old, new member or Bob Eaton, we are all here because we love being on the water and we love sharing those experiences with our fellow members. I would also include our incredible staff in that sentiment, from Daniel, Paco, Paul, Sam and the rest of the food and beverage staff, to Fonda, Ashley, Kristine and of course Nick and Jaron: we have a staff

CLUB MANAGER REPORTBy Daniel Wilkins

The Portlight page 3 January 2018

December at PYC is such a joyous time of the year. The club was beautifully dec-

orated by the Entertainment Com-mittee and other volunteers, and all of our club holiday events were extremely well attended. Thank you all for making the holidays a huge success at PYC, it truly capped 2017 as a banner year at the club.

Not only was December a great month at PYC, it was also a great month for me personally. My wife, Chris-tina, and I welcomed our second child to our family on December 5th, a baby boy named Henry. I was fortunate enough to take some time off to acclimate my family to the new child and I would like to thank all of the members and staff who supported me during my absence. Thank you!

I would also like to thank Commodore David Simonson and First Lady Donna Simonson for all of their con-tributions to the club in 2017. It was an honor and a privilege to work with these two great people and I can assure you that the club is in a better place than it was before they took the helm. Also, I would like to thank the 2017 Board of Trustees for all of their support last year; it was tremendous. Thank you!

I look forward to another milestone year in 2018 with an excellent group of members leading the club to further success, especially Commodore Frank Bocarde. I have had the privilege of working closely with the Commo-dore since I was hired, both on the Board and through the Board of Trustees, or through the Moorage Upgrade Project, and his vision for the club is one that will secure many more years of success at Portland’s premier yacht club. We are in the best of hands in 2018 with Com-modore Bocarde and I look forward to another year of growth and improvement of PYC as she celebrates her 110th anniversary.

We welcome the new Commodore and the First Lady with our Annual Commodore’s Ball on Saturday, Jan-uary 20th. The ball will feature a delicious dinner along with all of the traditional pageantry and some great music featuring our own Mike Horsfall and friends. Seating will be limited for this great event so I recom-mend early reservations to guarantee inclusion.

The Portland Boat Show takes place this month and we hope to replicate the strong performance that we had at

last year’s show where we recruited about fifteen new members. If you are not volunteering and are interested in doing so please see the link on our weekly electronic newsletter to sign up. We are once again offering dis-counted initiation fees for all applications received before February 15th so tell a friend and have them visit the office for a club tour today!

The bar and galley will operate Wednesday through Sunday in January (barring special events). Please check the weekly news or online calendar for updated hours of operation and specials. We will continue with our worldwide wine tour in which we feature wines from one of the many excellent wine regions in both the Old and New Worlds.

Lastly, we continue to work on the new BW and remod-eled A Rows and expect to make further headway during January. As soon as the slips are available we will offer them up per the direction of the Open Moorage chairperson and the Moorage Rules. We do expect that there will be immediate moorage for a few new members once the two rows are completed. The marina will remain winterized until the threat of a freeze subsides.

Thank you for your support and membership. Cheers to a great 2018 boating season!

that is the envy of every other club on the river. They are very much a part of our family.

Sometimes we join a club to have a moorage for our boat, but once we are here we begin to realize we have gained so much more, in our shared experiences, our new friendships, our sense of pride that only comes with membership in a great institution.

So, here is to 2018: prepare to have some fun and con-tinue to build on our history.

PYC Booth Duty: Volunteers Needed!

PYC’s biggest membership drive is in January during the Portland Boat Show where we will have a booth staffed by charming PYC members like you! We need volunteers to set up the booth on Tuesday, January 9th, from 9am to 12pm, and regular shifts beginning the morning of Wednesday, January 10th. There are several shifts available and we need to staff all five days of the show. This year, the PYC booth will be inside the exhi-bition hall in booth #204, not far from the Freshwater News booth. Additionally, we will need volunteers to help take down the booth and return materials to PYC on Monday January 15th. Volunteers’ names will be left in the Will Call area to gain access to the show. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early.

The Portland Boat Show is great fun and an extremely visible way to showcase PYC. Our booth will have plenty of “goodies” to attract show attendees.

Sign-up and a volunteer schedule will be on www.SignUp.com at this link http://signup.com/go/czzHgkA. SignUp.com is the leading online Sign-Up and reminder tool to organize a booth schedule, such as the PYC booth at the upcoming Portland Boat Show.

Year End Holiday EntertainmentBy Ruth Parr

The year ended with a flurry of holiday events that kept your 2017 entertainment committee happily engaged. We got the clubhouse decorated from

front to back, including the new Bob Eaton bar, using gold and cream colors, with black accents for contrast.

The ladies’ holiday dinner on December 6th was well attended, with the ladies being ably served by our very dapper waiters (PYC men). In spite of the power going off for two hours that afternoon during high winds, Paco was able to turn out a delicious three-course dinner. Entertainment was provided by Bridge Town Sound, an ensemble of eight barbershop singers who performed holiday songs.

The entire income from ticket sales – $1,762 – for the fifteen raffle baskets is being donated to the Red Cross for domestic disaster relief in Houston, Texas.

The children’s Brunch with Santa was December 10th. Its activities included hula-hoop“trick” instruction, ice cream custom-made to order (how about eggnog or mint?), a video lounge in the Kelly bar for older kids, a crafts table, and of course Santa, who arrived around noon to meet with and hand out a gift to each child.

Ship’s Store Gets New Products and New Look

By Sam Dubay

New items are here: we are re-stocking with boating coats, some new spring colors and new looks.

Come on over and find a great gift for your friends and family. Also watch for PYC’s own “Clothes Fashion Looksee’s” at cookouts. Our own members will be the models.

I remember when Bob and I first joined the club. We could hardly wait to proudly wear the PYC colors and clothes. I encourage all new members to visit the store and talk to me or Lynne about what they would like. The more we sell, the larger the variety of items we can offer in the store. Please members help support your ship’s store.

Moorage Upgrade ReportBy Frank Bocarde

As I write this (Dec. 11) we are in full breakwater installation mode. Bellingham Marine and Berg-erson Marine are on site and hope to finish their

first phase of the work (fingers come after Christmas) by the 15th of December. This means you will already be walking on the Breakwater before this issue reaches you. Things happen fast at PYC.

Of course, a very large part of this story is what came before this. On Monday, November 27, we were informed by the City of Portland that they were pro-cessing our permit for the installation of the Breakwater and movement/modification of A row.

John Colby immediately went into action assigning new temporary spots for all the members who had vessels on A row (thank you members for your flexibility!). A week prior to this Don Etter, Bob Morgan and I had met with BMI, Mark Marine, Marina Services, and of course Nick, Jaron and Daniel to lay out a plan to move the new 500,000 pound breakwater from its temporary home between A and B rows to the staging dock across the channel, break A row loose from the batter piles, shorten the fingers and then move it into its new home about 100 feet downstream.

With some luck with the weather and a great combi-nation of Jesse Fox and his team, Nick and Jaron, Craig Mark and his group and of course our volunteers, were able to cut through the logs in front of A row and drift A row downstream to its new home. Once piles were secured over the next couple of days, Bellingham Marine and Bergerson arrived on site and began to pull the steel batter piles that had held A row for the last 20 years. And now, after a very long wait, we have a new breakwater in place to protect the entire moorage.

If that wasn’t enough good news, we also found out from committee member John Fettig that the acquisition of the strip of land under the north end of our rows from C to M is in its last stages and should be completed shortly. This will place all of PYC’s moorage on PYC property.

Happy New Year!

Just another reminder that all of us will keep up the good work to make new members feel welcome by making introdu-

tions and inviting them to join your group during events.

Again remember, if you sponsored a new member, please make sure to reach out and show our “PYC hospitality” during some of their first events. All of us, but especially sponsors should remember to stay close to our new members, particu-larly throughout their first year as a member.

Have a Happy New Year of SailingBy Mary StainsbyPYC Sailing Fleet Co-Captain, S/V Kermit

Boat Show Deal

The holidays are over: was Santa good to you this year? If not entirely satisfied, the Portland Boat Show is January 10-14. If you go to the 2018 Portland Boat Show website (https://www.expocenter.org/events/2018-portland-boat-show), you can get a 2-for-1 admission coupon to help defray the cost, and if you go after 5 pm Wednesday through Friday, you can also park for free! Then you can use the money you save with these deals to buy new sail/foul weather gear/Spinlock suspenders or whatever that didn’t quite make it under the tree this year.

Regattas

PYC is the host club for a few regattas each year. The schedule for 2018 is: Opening Day Regatta on April 7th and 8thRose Festival Regatta on June 3rdMauni Elliott series every Wednesday evening in June (PYC sailboats only)Fall Regatta on Sept. 22nd and 23rdRobert A. Smith Regatta on October 6th and 7th

For each of these events, we need people who will provide a committee boat, help check in boats, raise flags, call out finish times, record finish times and myriad other tasks, many of which do not require any experience other than a desire to be out on the water. To help us identify those of you who would like to go out for a day or for an event, we will have a table set up in the ballroom at PYC before dinner at the first cookout this year – the Boat Show Cookout, January 12. If you would like to get your name on the committee crew list(s) or just find out more about what kinds of help we need, or if you would like to help with the Sailors’ Dinner, please stop by and talk to one of the Sailing Fleet committee people. Even if you aren’t sure you want to do this, please come by and say hello – we would love to talk to you.

Sailors’ Dinner and Opening Day Regatta

Sailors’ Dinner and Opening Day are coming up soon, so be sure to mark your calendar for April 6th (the dinner), 7th and 8th (the regatta). I will have more information regarding the program for the dinner, along with registration particulars for both the dinner and the regatta in the February Portlight.

SOS

Sailing on Sundays is going well this year, with over 60 boats entered! Though there haven’t been any real gear-busters or ice storms this year, there also haven’t been any canceled races, so that’s a good thing! The standings through eight races as of Dec. 10th are:

Level Class:Misty, Pam Sesar – first placeLeanalot, Thomas MacMenemy – third placeBluefin, Frank Bocarde – thirteenth place

Sailing on Sunday is a fun race each Sunday and not all boats race each week, which is often reflected in the standings.

110 years at PYC

As we celebrate our 110th year, let us remember the history of Portland Yacht Club.

Legend has it that during the winter of 1908, fifteen men were in a steam room and decided that, since the intro-duction of the gas engine to small boats, a boat-racing club was needed. They incorporated the Willamette Motor Boat Club for a cost of $1,000 and spent $125 to purchase a nine by twelve foot float. This was placed at the foot of SE Ellsworth Street. George J. Kelly was elected our first Commodore. It is interesting to note that his boat, Judge, was powered by a 4½ horsepower naphtha-fueled engine

The Club’s first race was won by Otto Ranft who drove his boat, Happy Heine, from Ross Island to the lower harbor at the speed of sixteen mph. Boats were improved and in 1910, sixteen year old Wilber Smith became the first to drive over fifty mph. His boat, Oregon Kid, was 20 feet long with a 125 horsepower engine. The Club quickly became known for daring and winning drivers.

Motorboat racing became very popular and it became part of the Rose Festival during which thousands lined the banks of the Willamette to watch the races. Not all of our racing was around the buoys as we pioneered the run down the Columbia to Astoria. George W. Kendall’s Sylph set the record of 3 hours and 51 minutes. Note: his wife drove and he kept the engine running. That time is great even today!

In 1909, we welcomed Mrs. S.J. Larson, our first female member. Not all of our members wanted to race and in

1913 the woman’s auxiliary was formed. After that the Club would also go on cruises.

In 1910, we changed our name to Portland Motor Boat Club and floated a $10,000 bond to build a new club-house. In 1911, at a cost of $2000, the building was con-structed on the Willamette. Its dimensions were 26 feet by 55 feet long, including a porch. It stood upon timbers 28 feet above low water.

1926 was a very eventful year as we changed our name to the Portland Yacht Club. We were notified that we had to move our clubhouse as it was in the location were the Ross Island bridge was to be built. Our founder George J. Kelly arranged for the Club to purchase six acres on Hardtack Island. He then put that up for bid between two sand companies. It was sold for $9,000, giving the Club more then a 100 percent profit.

With this money, Kelly purchased 1,500 feet of Columbia River frontage and the clubhouse was floated to our present moorage. In 1931, it was moved on to the bank at its present location. A small lighthouse was placed on the roof where it remains today.

Please note that we own the land under our moorage, across the slough and the tip of Tomahawk Island. Owning the bottom saves the club from having to pay property tax to the State of Oregon. When the slough was dredged in 1990 we were paid $12,000 for removal of our bottom soil.

With the move to the Columbia, our membership changed to more cruising and less racing, and sailboats were introduced to the Club.

Julia Max Transmission ProblemBy George and Sue Stonecliffe

Back in July, Julia Max, our sailboat, left Port-land for points south including the Baja Ha-Ha Rally in October. After weathering a gale around

Cape Blanco, we pulled into Crescent City, and decided that George needed to go forward with his left hip replacement before continuing on. Arrangements were made to return to Portland for surgery, September 19.

By October 12 we returned to the boat with PYC member, Peter Rose, as crew. We continued on a fast track spending two nights in San Francisco, four nights in Monterey and two nights in Avalon, before making our way to San Diego for the BHH Rally on the 30th.

While at Avalon, we got into 70 degree 70 degree Fahr-enheit water and noticed our zincs were GONE! We determined that the three months in a marina in Cres-cent City allowed stray currents to eat the zincs. While in San Diego (Chula Vista), we replaced them.

During the BHH Rally, we ended up having a major problem with our transmission. We were on the third of three legs, in light wind, running our engine, when we noticed an oil slick in our wake. The Yanmar engine seemed fine. But suddenly we started slowing in the water, coming to a dead stop. We put out a plea to the Baja fleet for assistance. One of the larger boats came over, rafted up to us, and the trouble shooting began. The prop was still intact and unfouled. The shaft freely turned. There was no leak of oil in the pan or the bilge, but we only had one quart of oil out of four in the tranny. Everyone was trying to figure out where the three quarts had gone.

The answer went back to Crescent City. After the zincs were gone, the stray current was working on the tranny cooler. During this third leg, a pinhole had developed, sucking out ATF oil from the tranny, and putting it into our exhaust.

What to do? ‘Bypass.’ With Peter Rose’s assistance and the creative thinking of a couple dozen BHH boats, we disconnected the hoses from the tranny cooler and joined them together. We plugged the two cooler con-nections with plugs. Adding Del 400 15-40 engine oil into the tranny was necessary to be able to run the transmission. And then we limped forward at 1000 rpm for the next 20 hours to Cabo San Lucas, checking oper-ating temperatures as we went.

Once at the dock in Cabo, we dumped the tranny fluid, added a full tranny of ATF, dumped it after running it, and repeated that process again. Then we put in our final ATF fill for going from Cabo to Puerto Vallarta. In order to help keep the tranny cool, we went to Auto-Zone in Cabo and bought hose and a small car radiator which we connected and immersed in a five gallon pail of water to help disperse the tranny heat. The first day we had our best day of sailing since Portland. The second day we ran the engine at 1600 rpm with tolerable tranny temperatures.

After arriving in Puerto Vallarta, we flew home to Port-land for Thanksgiving week and a well-planned visit with Cook Engine for replacement tranny cooler parts to take back to the boat. The hard question to ask is: what else was affected by the stray current in Crescent City? So we’re also taking a spare raw water pump back with us.

Wish us luck!

House and GroundsBy Frank Bocarde

You may have noticed that large metal box next to Marine Drive by our gate. That is the club’s

new backflow valve which is designed to protect the city’s water supply in case of a flood

coming over the dike.

Thank you to Jay Densem for seeing this project through from beginning to end. Interestingly this

was a key factor in getting the permits for the breakwater, the Eaton Bar, and the ramps to the Open

Moorage. The Portland Water Bureau would not allow any of those permits until PYC had a plan in

place to install the valve. Thanks Jay!

It’s Almost Time for the Annual Crab FeedBy Mary Stainsby

Crab Feed 2018 is Saturday, February 3rd and we’re already working hard to put the committee together for this year. For those of you who are

new to Portland Yacht Club, this is the largest single event of the year. It is an all-you-can-eat dinner, with lots of crab, oyster shooters, garlic bread, coleslaw and cake.

Some of you have family members or guests who can’t or don’t eat crab, so for those people we offer an alter-native of Smoked Salmon Fettucine at the same price as the crab dinner.

Happy Hour begins at 5:30, with dinner beginning at 6:30. As usual, the price of crab won’t be set by our sup-plier until after the first of January, so we aren’t able to set the price for the dinner at this time. About all we can say is that it will likely be in the $29 - $35 range per adult, with kids ages 6-12 being half price. As soon as we know the price, we will announce it in the weekly e-Portlight, and will also have posters up at the club showing the price.

The link for making reservations should be showing up in the weekly e-Portlight any day now, or you can call the club to make reservations. We have maxed out on the number of reservations in recent years, so if you plan to attend, be sure to get your reservations in early! Unlike most PYC events, if you come to the dinner without an advance reservation, you may not be allowed to eat or even be seated – it will depend on how many reserva-tions we have (we are limited by the Fire Marshall as to how many people can attend).

If you have been on the committee before, you should be receiving an email from Mike and me around in the next few days (if you don’t receive one and want to help again this year, please call or email us!). If you have never been on the Crab Feed committee – or haven’t been on it in several years – and would like to help, please contact us at [email protected] or (503) 310-2478. We will also have a volunteers table in the ballroom at the 1st cookout in January for those who would like to sign up to help or would just like more information.

This is lots of fun for everyone and we look forward to seeing all of you there!
