Portland State has a decidedly different football schedule in 2012 as the Big Sky Confer-ence expands to 13 teams. The Vikings will have five home games and six road games in the coming season. Although the Big Sky has grown to 13 football programs, teams will only play eight conference games, missing four opponents each season, but playing all schools eventually as schedules rotate each year. Of Portland State’s eight-game Big Sky schedule, three of the contests are against new conference opponents. And, in a scheduling quirk, the fourth new Big Sky school will also be a non-conference opponent. New to the Portland State schedule in 2012 from a conference competition standpoint will be Southern Utah, Cal Poly and UC Davis. The Vikings will also face new Big Sky member North Dakota in a non-conference game. All four schools are former members of the now-defunct Great West Football Conference. Portland State will open 2012 against NAIA National runner-up Carroll College at JELD-WEN Field (Sept. 1), followed by a meeting with North Dakota (the first in 31 years) on Sept. 8. Portland State’s game at Washington at Se-attle’s CenturyLink Field continues the recent trend of facing Pac-12 schools. The Huskies will be the

eighth Pac-12 opponent for PSU since 2005. The Vikings open conference play against new Big Sky member Southern Utah on Sept. 22 at JELD-WEN Field. PSU has not played the Thunder-birds since 1994, but leads the all-time series, 8-1. The two schools were Western Football Conference opponents on the Division II level in the 1980s. PSU travels to Northern Arizona on Sept. 29, then returns home for an Oct. 6 date with Idaho State. The Vikings defeated both of those schools in 2011. After an open weekend, the Vikings make back-to-back trips to California to take on new Big Sky opponents Cal Poly (Oct. 20) and UC Davis (Oct. 27). PSU plays Cal Poly for the first time since 1999. Those two were also Western Football Conference opponents in the 1980s. PSU has a 10-8 advantage in the all-time series. Former Portland State Head Coach Tim Walsh (1993-2006) will be starting his fourth season as the head coach at Cal Poly and facing the Vikings again for the first time since be-ing Head Coach at Sonoma State in the early 1990s. Walsh’s Mustang team won the 2011 GWFC title (3-1). UC Davis has been a consistent non-confer-ence opponent over the years, but now becomes a conference rival. PSU’s 41-33 win over the Aggies in 2010 was Viking Coach Nigel Burton’s first at Port-

land State. The Vikings lead the series, 7-4, all-time. On Nov. 3, Portland State will host Northern Colorado, a team the Vikings defeated in 2011. PSU then travels to defending Big Sky Champion Mon-tana State on Nov. 10. PSU was a 38-36 loser to the Bobcats in an “instant classic” game at JELD-WEN Field last year. The regular season finale is a home “rivalry” game with Eastern Washington on Nov. 17. PSU beat the Eagles in Cheney in 2011, 43-26. Because of the eight-game schedule in the 13-team conference, PSU matchups with Montana, Sacramento State and Weber State will not occur in 2012. The Vikings had played Montana and Weber State 16 straight seasons since joining the Big Sky in 1996. PSU and Sacramento State have played 28 of the last 29 years. Since the Big Sky Conference is now home to virtually every NCAA I FCS program in the west region, there will be regular occasions in which Big Sky schools meet one another outside of the conference schedule - like the Viking game at North Dakota on Sept. 8.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PORTLAND STATE AND VIKING FOOTBALL Portland State University, located in Portland, OR, is the largest school in the state of Oregon with 29,703 students. It was founded in 1946 as Vanport Col-lege - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior college in 1946-47, but com-peted in the Oregon Collegiate Conference at the NAIA level from 1950 to 1964, winning three OCC football titles (1962, 1963, 1964). PSU became a four-year institution in 1955. Portland State joined the NCAA in 1965 and competed at the College Divi-sion level (the fore-runner of NCAA II). PSU was an NCAA 1-AA member from 1978-80, then moved back to Division II in 1981, where it competed through the 1995 season. The Vikings were members of the Western Football Conference from 1982 to 1992, winning six conference championships. PSU made eight NCAA II playoff appearances from 1987 to 1995. In 1996, Portland State moved to the Big Sky Conference and up to the NCAA 1-AA (now FCS) level. The Vikings made their first playoff appearance at their current level in 2000. Portland State’s football program has produced such legendary figures as Coach Mouse Davis, quarterbacks Neil Lomax and June Jones (now head coach at SMU), Tom Oberg (the first Viking to play in the NFL), Coach Pokey Allen (who led the Vikings to two NCAA II National Championship appearances), and more than 25 players who have appeared in the NFL.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW The challenge of the 2012 season for Portland State Head Coach Nigel Burton and his Viking team is to maintain the progression that has occurred the past two years and finally break through at the top of the Big Sky Conference and into the NCAA play-offs. The Vikings climbed to third place in the Big Sky in 2011, teased with a late-season appearance in the top 25 poll, and got into the conversation for a post-season berth before losing the season finale. Still, at 7-4 overall, 5-3 in the Big Sky Conference, Portland State has inspired further optimism and enthusiasm for itself and fans alike in 2012. “We talk to our guys about continuing to set the culture here and taking the next step,” said Bur-ton, who will begin his third season as Head Coach in the fall. “We feel like we are a good football team right now, but we want to be a great football team. So, we need to continue to develop habits that help us go from good to great.” Portland State has become renowned for its run-based Pistol Offense the past two years, leading the Big Sky Conference in rushing both times. How-ever, the Vikings’ backfield is making a significant transition as record-setting quarterback Connor Kavanaugh and dynamic running back Cory McCaf-frey are gone. Meanwhile, most of a very talented group of receivers return… hmmmm. On defense, the Vikings lost seven starters, in particular three key defensive linemen and the three top safeties. On the other hand, the lineback-ing corps may be the deepest, most talented position on the field coming into 2012. The Vikings come off a season of dramatic improvement on defense, cutting opponent production by 113 yards and 12 points per game from 2010 to 2011. PSU had brilliant special teams performances in 2011 with the nation’s top kicker, the Big Sky’s best kick return game, and an attacking approach that resulted in nine blocked kicks for the season. With all that in mind, Burton’s move from “good to great” will entail some refinements during the spring: OFFENSE: “We have to improve on third- and fourth-and-short. So, we are going to have a lot of team periods that are designed to improve in those areas. The biggest thing that has to improve is the passing game. We felt like we recruited to that and all of our receivers are back, so their experience will help. DEFENSE: “Really, the two big things we have to do are to continue to reduce the number of big plays - which we were better at last year, but nowhere near satisfactory - and create more turn-overs.” SPECIAL TEAMS: “We need to continue to de-velop on the momentum we started in terms of big plays, blocking kicks. I think in particular we have to improve on punt return.”

OFFENSE Quarterback is always the key in football, which means there will be an intriguing transition made at the position for Portland State in 2012. The Vikings graduated three senior quarterbacks, including the aforementioned Kavanaugh, and do not return a signal caller that has taken a game snap at Portland State. But the Vikings have some interesting young players at the position, includ-ing sophomore Josh Milhollin (6-4, 190), redshirt freshmen Thomas Carter (5-10, 185), and a pair of highly touted freshman signees in Paris Penn (6-0, 205) and Keiran McDonagh (6-2, 230). Also new is

much-publicized signee Collin Ramirez (6-2, 200), from Butte Junior College, and - don’t look now - the return of senior Nick Green (6-2, 200) to the quarterback spot after two years at safety and on special teams. To say the competition for playing time is crowded is no understatement. Third-year Head Coach Nigel Burton has said in the past that he does not recruit junior college players unless he feels they can make a serious run at a starting role, and that is where Ramirez comes in. The junior from Red Bluff, CA became renowned for breaking the touchdown pass record of Aaron Rodgers at Butte (30 in 2011). He has good size, athleticism and a very accurate arm. But, he still has to perform. One thinks if he has a good spring, he will be the man. Among the returners, Milhollin would be the likely challenger to start. His game is a little differ-ent from Ramirez in that he is not as accomplished a passer, but is a tremendous athlete and brilliant runner. Green would figure to be somewhere between the two in terms of running and passing skills. If those three rise and battle it out for playing time, the younger players, including the two sign-ees would have ample time to develop their games. What makes the quarterback choice all the more interesting is that, although PSU appears to be a run-first team (in 2011, it was a 66/34 ratio of run/pass), it will have one of the best and deepest groups of receivers in the league in 2012. And with offensive coordinator Bruce Barnum building strong passing attacks at previous stops, the pass-ing game may become more prominent in 2012.

Senior wide receiver Justin Monahan (52-707-6 in 2011) was simply one of Portland State’s top performers on the team in 2011. He had one-third of the Vikings receptions, more than a third of the yards and half of the touchdown receptions. Thought of as more of a possession receiver, Monahan has proven to have the ability to get downfield and make big plays. He is joined at wideout by one of Portland State’s top all-around players, Nevin Lewis (22-337-2). Also a senior, Lewis blossomed into a go-to deep threat for the Vikings while being the team’s top special teams player as a kick returner and punt blocker. Those two, at 6-2, 195 pounds each, have the size that Burton likes from his outside receivers. Other veterans that figure to play big roles are another senior in Keitrell Anderson (5-9, 170, 6-108-1 in five games), junior AJ Powell (5-8, 165, 9-104-0) and sophomores Roston Tatum (6-2, 205, 4-98-0) and Alex Toureen (6-0, 180, 2-6-0 in three games). Anderson has 25 catches in 22 career games. Tatum is another big receiver who has only scratched the surface of his abilities. A key signee in 2011, Tou-reen was on his way to being a contributing pos-session receiver before injuries short-circuited his season. Powell has played sporadically at receiver and also offers a role as a return man. Redshirt freshman David Jones’ (6-1, 205) exceptional athleticism will have him breaking into the mix in the coming season, while 2012 signee Jamarr Graves (6-3, 195) may have something to say about it as well. Burton loves the athleticism and talent of his returning receivers, and is just as excited with his young players. “You throw a healthy Alex Toureen in

2012VIKINGFOOTBALLthe mix and that makes a difference,” he said. “And David Jones can really stretch the field. He’s pretty good, and the thing that really impresses me is his work ethic. As physically gifted as he is, his work ethic is phenomenal.” The tight end position is also manned by a pair of talented and complementary seniors with Kalua Noa (6-1, 230, 17-217-2) and Gage Loftin (6-4, 245, 5-86-0). Noa, a converted wide receiver, is more of a receiving tight end, while the bigger Loftin is more of a blocking tight end. Another returner, Greylin James (6-1, 220), also offers a key blocker for the running game. The Vikings added Adam Futter (6-4, 235) in its 2012 signing class, and also return redshirts Taylor Meyrick (6-5, 275) and Cameron Thompson (6-5, 240), as well as Taylor Martinek (6-3, 220). Like the quarterback position, at running back the Vikings will have a number of options from

which to choose - and even more likely share - the role in 2012. Sophomore Shaquille Richard (5-8, 175) is the most experienced returnee to fill the absence created by McCaffrey’s graduation. He had some good moments, including two starts, 384 rushing yards and a 90-yard performance against TCU as a freshman. Despite his relatively small stature, Richard also proved to be a tough runner. A few late season injuries cut down his effectiveness, but he should be good to go in the coming year. Newcomers DJ Adams (5-10, 220) and Steven Long (5-7, 175) are key additions for 2012. Those two should combine with Richard to give Portland State its deepest running attack since Burton brought the Pistol Offense to the Park Blocks. Why? Because right behind them are Denzel Davis (a converted cornerback, 5-9, 170), who passed a one-game tryout at running back at the end of 2011, Justin Lilley (5-11, 205) who has shown running, but more significantly, blocking abilities over the past two seasons. Another guy with experience, senior Ben Bowen (5-10, 200), and two redshirts, Jordan Lewis (5-8, 175) and Julian Cruell (5-8, 190), give the Vikings a long list of backs. Adams, a transfer from Maryland, fits in the Ramirez mold in that he is expected to be a primary candidate to start. He has the size to take the punishment at running back. Two years ago, as a freshman, Adams rushed for 239 yards and a team-

high 11 touchdowns for the Terps. Long is small but extremely dynamic as proven by his 2,205 yards and 37 touchdowns as a senior at Lake Oswego High School. He led the team to a 14-0 record and the 6A state champion-ship, and was named the state Player of the Year while saving his best games for the strongest op-ponents. Whether he will be ready to contribute as a freshman is yet to be seen, but he should have a good future. “We have a system that ensures that the best guy plays,” said Burton. “We don’t necessarily have a question of who, but a question of when is some-one going to establish themselves as the guy.” “Shaq has some qualities that Cory McCaffrey had. What is scary for our opponents is, he is faster than Cory. But now we have a guy who is a more physical back in DJ and we didn’t necessarily have that (last year). I’m going to be really excited to

see what Denzel Davis can do, in addition to Julian Cruell and having some young guys who are going to come up.” Run-Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Brad Davis, now starting his fourth season at Portland State, has molded his unit into one of the team’s most consistent and productive over the years. Davis’ group has blocked for the Big Sky’s top rushing attack in the past two seasons, setting records along the way. And though Dustin Waldron may be gone to an NFL career, four starters return from the 2011 line. Honorable mention perform-ers Kyle Ritt (6-2, 290) and Mitch Gaulke (6-2, 265) return, as do Mitchell Van Dyk (6-9, 290) and Joey Esposito (6-4, 300, and a remarkable story himself as a cancer survivor). Other experienced returnees are sophomore Cornelius Edison (6-3, 285), seniors Dalton Jasso (6-2, 280) and Anthony Moxley (6-6, 315), and juniors Thomas Robertson (6-4, 275) and John Wall (6-2, 275). There are redshirt freshmen John Wolfe (6-3, 290) and Angelo Tupper (6-3, 270) as well. The signing class of 2012 was extremely pros-perous on the offensive line, with the addition of JC Matt Hollen (6-3, 300), and freshmen Josh Hanson (6-7, 255), Kyle Smith (6-5, 295) and Dalton Milburn (6-6, 280). What it all adds up to is heated competition again for playing time on the offensive line - a

major factor in what has made it a top perform-ing group under Davis. Edison and Moxley are top candidates to break through for playing time at a deep position. Hollen is likely to gray shirt in 2012, but should compete for a starting job when he gets on the playing field in 2013.

DEFENSE Talk about a much-improved defense has to begin with Portland State’s linebackers. “The linebacking corps is the strength of the defense, the heart and soul,” said Defensive Coordi-nator Eric Jackson. “We have some savvy veterans. “To continue to get better we need to be more devoted as a team to doing everything the right way. We’ve have got goals everyday. Account-ability, making plays, running to the football and attacking non-stop.” The 2011 Vikings allowed 113 yards less and 12 points fewer per game than in 2010. The central figure in that effort was middle linebacker Ryan Rau, PSU’s leading tackler. His eligibility has expired, but the Vikings return a host of talented LBs, led by second team All-Conference performer Ian Sluss (6-0, 225). Big play guy and a starter for nearly three seasons, Joel Sisler (6-2, 210), also returns giving the Vikings two excellent outside linebackers. The talent does not stop there, though. Senior Khalil Bass (6-2, 230), who was fourth in tackles for the Vikings, should contend for the middle linebacker spot. Also returning with quality experience are senior Dionte Brooks (6-2, 220) and junior Jaycob Shoemaker (6-0, 230), who comes back from an injury redshirt season. The Vikings have some young linebackers ready to have an impact as well. Sophomore Corey Crowder (6-1, 205) got on the field in 2011, though mainly on special teams. Redshirt freshmen Dennis Taylor (6-0, 230) and Kawika Stant (5-11, 220) are also ready to get into the mix. However, the prize of Burton’s 2012 signing class may be his three freshman linebackers, Daniel Halverson (6-1, 240), Zach Walen (6-3, 200) and Brandon Brody-Heim (5-11, 220). He expects all three to have a chance to play, and perhaps a lot, in their first year. On the defensive line, the Vikings are look-ing to fill some holes after the losses of defensive tackles Myles Wade and Alika Vaiese and defensive ends Jack Forbes and Carl Sommer. Defensive ends Julious Moore (6-0, 290) and Bryant Long (6-3, 245), both juniors, are the most experienced returners, along with tackle Dereck Jester (6-4, 250). Those three have a combined 22 career starts, but they need some help. First on the list to provide that help is junior college signee Tomasi Molesi (6-1, 280) from Arizona Western Junior College. Originally a signee at Oregon State, Molesi is a fearsome defensive tackle who is likely to start for the Vikings. Another transfer, Zack Ka’ahanui (6-1, 265), brings depth to the offensive line and should contribute as well. Brandon Tobias (6-2, 220), James Seuma’ala (6-3, 240), and Vincent Johnson (6-2, 265) are sophomores with limited experience. The coach-ing staff is looking for that group to step up and provide quality downs for the defense. Redshirts Jeremy Boone (6-4, 260) and Mike Davis (6-4, 235) are back looking for a role. The Vikings also have grayshirt Sadat Sulleyman (6-2, 240), who was part of the 2011 signing class in that group. Freshman signees Cam Sommer (6-3, 220) and Jacob Nall (6-4, 230) round out the defensive line corps. Cam, brother of Carl, is a versatile player who

may get a chance at tight end as well. Safety is perhaps the biggest question mark for the Vikings in 2012. All-Conference star De-Shawn Shead, an anchor in the defensive backfield the last four seasons, is gone. So too are Donte Almond and Manoa Latu, who got most of the plays at the position the last two years. The Vikings return junior Nathan Snow (5-11 190), who has 11 career starts but sat out 2011 with an injury. He and Dean Faddis (5-11, 205) - one game played in 2011 before being injured - have the bulk of the experience at the position for the Vi-kings. So, Burton picked up two players he expects to be key to the role in 2012 in his signing class, junior David Edgerson (5-11, 205) from Grossmont Junior College, and freshman Nick Rothstein (5-11, 205) from Jesuit (OR) High School. PSU has redshirt freshmen Tyler Turituri (6-2, 220) and Walter Santiago (5-11, 185), part of the 2011 signing class, also looking to step into playing time. Andrew Godinet (5-8, 170), Michael Plummer (6-2, 210) and Henry Organ (5-10, 180) all have experience, but mainly on special teams. Mike Williams (5-9, 165) is the most experi-enced of three veteran cornerbacks for the Vikings. Williams is a senior whose game has evolved over the years. He has played in 32 games, including 22 starts. Aaron Kincy (6-1, 190) and Jones (6-2, 175) saw a fair amount of playing time as backups in 2011 and will vie to start in 2012. Redshirt freshman Demetrius Jackson (5-10, 180) comes off an injury in 2011, but is ready to play and contribute. Dennis Fite (6-5, 190) may be the tallest cornerback ever at Portland State. The JC transfer was a key signing for Burton in the off-season. He should compete to start as well, while freshmen Chevy Walker (6-0, 180) and Aaron Sibley, both 2012 signees, are talented athletes. Walker will get a look as a kick returner and maybe even at running back.

Leading receiver Justin Monahan

SPECIAL TEAMS What more can be said about the Vikings 2011 special teams performance? The Vikings had the na-tion’s top kicker in consensus first team All-Ameri-can Zach Brown (6-1, 200), two of the Big Sky’s top three kick returners, a veteran punter skilled in both directional and pro punting, and a special teams unit that blocked a total of nine kicks (7 punt, 2 FG) to rank second in the nation. You want more? The Vikings also recovered four kickoffs, both onside and pooch, snuffed out two fake punt attempts, and converted two fake punts of their own. PSU won four Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week honors and had the Big Sky’s first team kicker (Brown) and special teams performer (Nevin Lewis). Brown returns for his senior season after making 24-27 field goals in 2011. He should be a key part of the Viking offense as well as a top NFL prospect. Punter Thomas Duyndam (6-4, 215) also returns for his senior year, as does Lewis. The Vikings have added a new long snapper in freshman Kameron Canaday (6-5, 240), who ranked fifth in the nation among all long snappers recruits. New special teams coordinator Ikaika Malloe will be charged with continuing the vital role that PSU’s “third unit” has played in its program turn-around.

QUICK NOTES FOR 2012

IMPROVED? YUP: Portland State improved by five wins from 2010 to 2011 (2-9 to 7-4), making it one of the most improved teams in the country. PSU also appeared in the national rankings for the first time since early in the 2007 season, earning a number 25 rank on Nov. 14… Head Coach Nigel Burton was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award for engineering the turnaround. He finished 14th in the balloting.

THE RUSH: The Vikings have led the Big Sky Conference in rushing each of the last two seasons. In 2011, the Vikings averaged a school record 247.8 yards rushing per game to lead the Big Sky and rank eighth in the nation. This, despite losing the nation’s leading rusher (Cory McCaffrey) and scorer after week six. SR QB Connor Kavanaugh finished third in the league in rushing (1,060 yards). McCaffrey would have finished fourth (731) despite playing just five games... PSU also set a school record for rushing in a single game (436 vs. Idaho State, Oct. 1).

NATION’S BEST: Any way you slice it, Viking Zach Brown was the nation’s top kicker in 2012. He was a consensus first team All-American, earning honors from Associated Press, The Sports Network, the AFCA, and Walter Camp, while being named the nation’s top kicker by the College Football Perfor-mance Awards and College Sporting News… Brown was also a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award, recognizing kickers for excellence on the field and community service… in addition, Brown led the nation in field goals made with 24-27. He broke his own Portland State record for field goals made (18), and now owns 10 school records… he is a six-time Big Sky Conference Player of the Week.

VETERANS: SR OL Kyle Ritt is one of 12 fourth-year seniors on the roster for 2012, but he is the only offensive player to compete in all 33 games over the past three years. He has the most starts of all offensive players with 32… third-year SR WR Justin Monahan has started every game the past two years… SR K Zach Brown has also played in all 33 games, earning the start in every game. SR P Thomas Duyndam has played in 32 career games, with his only miss due to the Vikings not punting in a win at UC Davis in 2010. Duyndam has 31 starts… on defense, Mike Williams has played in the most games with 32 appearances. SR LB Joel Sisler (31) and SR DT Dereck Jester (30) follow close behind. Sisler has the most starts on defense (27), followed by Williams (22).

NEW STAFF: Portland State had three staff changes in the off-season. Former Special Teams Coordina-tor Stacy Collins was named the new head coach at South Dakota School of Mines. He was replaced by Ikaika Malloe, a collegiate coaching veteran and former teammate of Nigel Burton’s at Washington. Malloe has specialized in coaching defense and special teams over the years. Most recently, he was the defensive coordinator at Yale... Lester Towns took over as the new linebackers coach and recruit-ing coordinator, replacing Ahmed Zarrugh, who left to enter private business. Towns came to PSU after working four seasons at Alabama and being part of two national championship teams... defensive line coach Malik Roberson left to take the defensive coordinator job at Central Washington. PSU is cur-rently in the process of replacing him.

SMARTER THAN THE AVERAGE CENTER: JR C Mitch Gaulke was named Academic All-District 8 for Division I football for his performance on the field and high academic standing in 2011. He also won the team’s Mike Schrunk Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Gaulke maintains a 3.76 GPA in Business Administration: Accounting…. Gaulke led a group of eight Vikings named to the Academic All-Big Sky Conference team for maintaining a GPA of 3.20 or higher while competing in at least half of the games.

RECRUITING BONANZA: Portland State’s 2012 signing class was perhaps the most locally-based since Portland State joined the Big Sky Confer-ence in 1996, and likely since Mouse Davis trod the sidelines for the Vikings in the late 1970s. Of the 24 signees in 2012, 16 are high schoolers from the Pacific Northwest, 13 are from Oregon, 10 from the metro area. Portland State got lots of help in the offensive and defensive backfield as well as on both lines, and Burton feels they came up with remark-able young talent at the linebacker position. Better yet, from The Sports Network’s columnist Craig Haley: ”With their high number of two- and three-star commits, it can be argued that James Madison and Portland State are putting together the best recruiting classes in the FCS.”

WINS AND LOSSES: Portland State finished the 2011 season 7-4, its best record since going 7-4 in 2006. PSU went 3-2 on the road - its first winning road record since going 4-3 in 2006... PSU’s 3-1 Big Sky road record matched its best ever (also 2000 and 2006)... with seven wins, PSU had more than the previous two years combined (4-18)... the Vikings were 4-2 at home... at 7-4, the Vikings have eight winning records in 16 years as a member of the Big Sky Conference... PSU is 55-31 in home games since moving to the NCAA I level, 28-62 on the road... PSU is 55-68 all-time in Big Sky Confer-ence games in its’ 16th season as a member. The Vikings are 34-28 at home, 21-40 on the road in BSC games.

HE CAN DO IT ALL: JR WR Nevin Lewis has made his name as a do-it-all Viking and earned first team All-Big Sky Conference at the special teams posi-tion. He was brilliant on special teams, blocking three punts, snuffing out a fake punt with a tackle for loss and making three tackles in all. He also had 29 kick returns for an average of 23.7 per return... as a receiver, Lewis had 22 catches for 337 yards and two touchdowns. He had one rush for seven yards and, at Eastern Washington, completed a 14-yard touchdown pass on a reverse play... Lewis ranks fourth all-time in career kickoff return yards (1,117) and fourth in season kickoff return yards (686) at PSU... He did all this despite sitting out two games with injury.

NEW ATTITUDE AT HOME: Portland State brought a new attitude to JELD-WEN Field. After going 35-9 at home over Tim Walsh’s final eight seasons, 1999-2006 (including two 5-0 marks), the Vikings were just 7-13 at home from 2007-10 (which included 1-3 at Hillsboro Stadium in 2010). The Vikings were 4-2 in their return to JELD-WEN in 2011... Head Coach Nigel Burton now has a 5-5 home record.

PORTLAND STATE AND THE BIG SKY CONFER-ENCE: Portland State completed its 16th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference and Division I football. The Vikings are 55-68 all-time in Big Sky games, 34-28 at home and 21-40 on the road. Former coach Tim Walsh (42-41 in Big Sky games) led the Vikings through the first 11 years, and Jerry Glanville (7-17) was the head coach for three seasons. Nigel Burton is 6-10 in Big Sky play in two seasons as head coach. The Vikings have never won a Big Sky title, but tied for second four times, tied for third two times, and tied for fourth twice under Walsh. The Vikings finished sixth, sixth and eighth under Glanville. Burton has placed in a tie for eighth and third.

PSU has made one NCAA I playoff appearance (2000) after placing second in the Big Sky.

THE GREAT UNKNOWN: The Big Sky Conference expands to 13 teams in 2012, giving Portland State’s schedule a decidedly different look from past seasons. Southern Utah (6-5 in 2011), Cal Poly (6-5), UC Davis (4-7) and North Dakota (8-3) all join the league (though CP and UCD are football-only members) and the Vikings will face all four schools in the coming season - three as conference op-ponents and one as a non-conference opponent. All four schools are former members of the now-defunct Great West Football Conference. The Thunderbirds, Aggies and Mustangs all appear on the Vikings’ schedule, replacing Mon-tana, Weber State and Sacramento State (whom the Vikings had played in conference games each of the last 16 years). PSU will play all 12 schools in an annual rotating schedule, however just eight of 12 each year. The Vikings will also play North Dakota in a non-conference game in 2012. Since the Big Sky Conference is now home to virtually every NCAA I FCS program in the west region, there will be regu-lar occasions in which Big Sky schools meet one another outside of the conference schedule - like the Vikings and Fighting Sioux on Sept. 8.

MORE EYES ON THE VIKINGS: DIRECTV Sports Networks and the Big Sky Conference have entered into a five-year agreement making DIRECTV Sports Networks and its ROOT SPORTS branded regional sports networks the league’s official TV partner and the home of Big Sky football and basketball. The three ROOT SPORTS networks reach more than 8.7 million viewers across 18 states, including Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, North Dakota,Utah and Colorado in the Big Sky Conference footprint. Big Sky Conference games will be distributed primarily to the Northwest and Rocky Mountain ROOT SPORTS networks, which are carried by all major distributors in those territo-ries, including Comcast, DIRECTV, DISH Network, Cablevision and many others. In addition, as the national television rights holder for Big Sky athlet-ics, DIRECTV Sports Networks will have the ability

to distribute Big Sky games both regionally and nationally. All events will be produced and distributed in High Definition with new state-of-the-art graphics elements customized for the Big Sky Conference and its teams. Game times and television schedules are yet to be announced. The Big Sky Conference will have a minimum of 18 games airing on Root Sports in 2012. Viking football will continue to air on Freedom 970 AM in the Portland area.

A VICTORY OF A DIFFERENT SORT: When JR OL Joey Esposito trotted onto the field for the opening snap on offense against Southern Oregon to begin the 2011 season, few Viking fans noticed. Such is the anonymity of the offensive lineman. However, those familiar with Joey’s story know it was the best one in a day filled with good Viking anecdotes. Esposito was playing in his first game since signing a national letter of intent with Portland State in 2010. Shortly after competing in spring football that year, Esposito was diagnosed with cancer for the SECOND TIME in his life. Having pre-viously battled testicular cancer, Esposito this time was told he had a spot on his lung. The 6-4, 300-pound Esposito had previously overcome the insidious disease while in junior college. This time, he underwent chemotherapy throughout the summer of 2010 and eventually surgery to remove a piece of his lung. Not surprisingly, Esposito was unable to do anything football-related for the rest of the year. He returned for spring football this year, and despite being weak, showed promise. He was lauded for his resiliency in features by the Oregonian newspaper and KGW TV Sports during spring ball. “I pretty much had to start all over again,” Esposito told Ian Ruder of the Oregonian. “I wanted to come back and play football but I had to go through every day like it was my first day. I had to take my time getting into it and not rush. It took a while to get back into but this is what I do, this is who I am.” Esposito has maintained a clean bill of health since returning to the field one year ago.

2011 REVIEW

Viking quarterback Connor Kavanaugh led Portland State back to a winning program in 2011 with a 7-4 record. Kavanaugh set QB rushing records and engineered one of the most potent offenses in the Big Sky Conference on his way to being named team MVP.

The Portland State Vikings wrapped up their best season in five years with a 7-4 record in 2011. PSU went 5-3 in the Big Sky Conference and came within one game of serious consideration for the NCAA Playoffs. The Vikings entered the national rankings at 25th on Nov. 14, their first appearance in more than four years. PSU improved from 2-9 in 2010 to 7-4 in 2011. The five-game improvement made it one of the most improved teams in the nation. The Vikings were a consensus number seven pick in preseason Big Sky Conference polling, but ended up in third place.

BROWN NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN Portland State junior kicker Zach Brown made it a clean sweep of All-Amer-ican awards. Brown was a consensus first team All-American after being named to the Associated Press, the American Football Coaches Association, The Sports Network and the Walter Camp All-America teams. Brown, who prepped Keizer’s McNary High School, led the nation at the FCS level in field goals, making 24 of 27 this season (2.18 per game). He also broke his own school record for field goals made (18) and has established 10 school records. During the course of the 2011 season, Brown was named Big Sky Confer-ence Special Teams Player of the Week twice, and now has won the award six times in three seasons. Brown was named first team All-Big Sky Conference. The 6-1, 200-pounder was also one of 10 national finalists for the Fred Mitchell Award, recognizing kickers for excellence on the field and community service. Brown hit on 89% of his field goals in 2011, extending a consecutive made streak to 16 (dating from the 2010 season) before finally missing from 53 yards at Montana on Oct. 15. Of his three misses in 2011, all were from 46 yards or longer. Brown ended the season on a streak of eight consecutive made. Brown is Portland State’s first All-American since linebacker Andy Schantz was named AP 3rd team All-American and Sports Network 2nd team All-Amer-ican in 2008. PSU’s last first team All-American was center Brennan Carvalho in 2007 - a consensus choice.

BROWN, SHEAD, McCAFFREY, LEWIS LEADALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE CHOICES Portland State kicker Zach Brown, strong safety DeShawn Shead, running back Cory McCaffrey and special teams star Nevin Lewis were selected as first team All-Big Sky Conference players in post-season balloting done by league coaches. PSU also had three players make second team All-Conference and nine earn honorable mention All-Big Sky. Brown, a junior from Keizer’s McNary (OR) High School, had to be an easy choice as he led the nation in field goals made. Brown hit 24-27 on the season, an average of 2.18 made per game. Brown broke his own school record of 18 made. The 6-1, 200-pound kicker did not miss a field goal inside of 46 yards, made two from more than 50 yards and ended the season with eight consecutive field goals made. Brown was a two-time Big Sky Conference Player of the Week. Shead, a senior from Palmdale, CA, was an anchor on defense and ranked second on the team with a career-high 64 tackles. He had five tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions (one for touchdown), eight pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery during the season. Shead, a 6-2, 220-pounder, also was named Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 14. He was a second team selection in 2010. Shead, who led the conference with a 26.1 kick return average, was also named an honorable mention kick returner. Despite playing in only five games, McCaffrey certainly had the respect of Big Sky Conference coaches. The 5-9, 185-pound senior from Sisters (OR) HS, was the nation’s leader in rushing and scoring when he went down with an achilles injury on Oct. 15. Still, McCaffrey finished with 731 rushing yards and 13 touch-downs on the season. In fact, he had the fourth most rushing yards in the Big Sky for the season in those five games. McCaffrey was also a first-team All-Big Sky

running back in 2010. Lewis, also a star from central Oregon, was named first team All-Conference at the special teams position. A 6-2, 195-pound junior from Culver (OR) HS, Lewis was an all-around star, blocking three punts, averaging 24 yards per kick return, making a tackle for loss on a fake punt and three special teams tackles for the season. At wide receiver, he also had 22 catches for 337 yards and two touch-downs. Lewis was named Big Sky Player of the Week for Special Teams on Sept. 5. Named to the Big Sky’s second team were offensive tackle Dustin Waldron, defensive tackle Myles Wade, and outside linebacker Ian Sluss. Waldron, a 6-6, 280-pound senior from Marist (OR) High School, has been a mainstay on the Vikings’ line for four years. He blocked for the nation’s lead-ing pass offense (2008) and two-time Big Sky leading rushing offense (2010 and 2011). Despite going down with injury during the season’s eighth game, he is considered an NFL prospect. Wade, a 6-1, 300-pound graduate student who attended Central Catholic (OR) HS, was a primary factor in the Vikings’ improved defense in 2011. PSU al-lowed 110 yards less and 12 points less per game to opponents. Wade had 30 tackles, four for losses, two sacks, a pass breakup and two blocked kicks on the season. Wade also earned a Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week honor after blocking a potential winning field goal by Northern Arizona on Sept. 17. Sluss, a 6-foot, 225-pound junior from Vista, CA, was also a big addition in 2011. He was third on the team with 55 tackles, a team-leading 13.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. The Vikings honorable mention All-Big Sky choices were: SR QB Connor Kavanaugh (1,060 rushing yards, 7 TDs, 1,628 passing yards, 9 TDs), JR WR Jus-tin Monahan (52 catches, 707 yards, 6 TDs), JR OL Kyle Ritt, SO C Mitch Gaulke, SR DE Jack Forbes (38 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, three sacks, two pass breakups, fumble recovery), JR LB Joel Sisler (35 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, four pass breakups), SR LB Ryan Rau (90 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, four sacks, two pass breakups, fumble recovery, forced fumble), and JR P Thomas Duyndam (39.0 average).

BURTON NAMED FINALIST FOR NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR Portland State Head Football Coach Nigel Burton was one of 20 coaches nationwide that was named as a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, the highest coaching honor in NCAA I FCS football. Burton finished 14th in the balloting, released in early January. Rob Ambrose of Towson was named the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year. Burton was named a finalist after getting the Vikings within one game of serious playoff consideration this season. PSU was 7-4 overall, a five-game im-provement over 2010. Burton was one of two Big Sky Conference Coaches on the ballot for the FCS Coach of the Year award. Also listed was Montana’s Robin Pflugrad who placed 15th in voting. This marks the second time that a Viking coach has been a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award. Tim Walsh was a finalist in 1999 after leading the Vikings to an 8-3 record - their first winning mark after moving to the Division I level. Walsh finished fifth in the balloting that year.

KAVANAUGH NAMED TEAM MVP Viking quarterback Connor Kavanaugh was named the 2011 team Most Valuable Player at the Vikings’ post-season banquet. Kavanaugh, a senior from Lincoln (OR) High School, rushed for 1,060 yards and seven touchdowns, while completing 127 of 219 passes for 1,628 yards, nine touchdowns and six intercep-tions. Senior Dustin Waldron was named the Vikings’ Most Valuable Offensive Lineman. Waldron, from Marist (OR) High School, missed the last few games of the season with injury but is an NFL prospect. Cory McCaffrey was selected as the team’s top offensive back despite hav-ing his season shortened by injury. McCaffrey, from Sisters (OR) HS, played in just five games, but totaled 731 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in that time. He was the nation’s leader in scoring and rushing when he went down with a left achilles injury. Defensive end Jack Forbes was named as the Vikings’ best defensive line-man. Forbes, from Pacifica, CA, had 38 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a fumble recovery while starting every game. DeShawn Shead was named the team’s Outstanding Defensive Back as a strong safety. Shead, from Palmdale, CA, was a mainstay for the Vikings for four seasons, starting all 44 games of his career. This season, he had 64 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions, eight pass breakups, a fumble recovery and three forced fumbles. Shead also averaged more than 26 yards per kickoff return.

Nevin Lewis was selected as the Vikings’ Special Teams Player of the Year for his all-around performance on all teams. Lewis, a junior from Culver (OR) HS, blocked three punts, made a tackle for loss on another fake punt, had three spe-cial teams tackles and averaged 23.7 yards per kickoff return. As a wide receiver, Lewis had 22 catches for 337 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Aaron Kincy was selected as the team’s Most inspirational Player. Kincy, a cornerback, is from St. Petersburg, FL. The Most Improved Player on the team this season was Donte Almond. A senior safety from Milpitas, CA, Almond took over as a starter for the majority of the season, making 39 tackles and an interception. The Scout Team Player of the Year was redshirt Zach Zelecki. A freshman defensive end, Zelecki is from Central Point’s Crater (OR) HS. Mitch Gaulke was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year this season. A sophomore from West Linn (OR) HS, Gaulke started every game at center. He majors in Business Administration: Accounting at PSU and earned Academic All-District honors. He is on the national ballot for Division I Academic All-American. John Stewart was given the Charles Withers Award, given annually to someone outside the program, for overall contributions to the success of Viking football.

BROWN LEADS NATION IN FIELD GOALS MADE JR K Zach Brown became the first Viking to lead the nation in a statistical category in 13 years by making 24 of 27 field goals in 2011. Brown’s average of 2.18 field goals per game is the nation’s best and a Portland State record. The last Viking to be a statistical leader was former quarterback Jimmy Blanchard with a 167.6 quarterback rating (1998). Brown made his last eight field goals on the season and broke his own school record of 18 (set in both 2009 and 2010). Brown was a two-time Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and has won six honors in his ca-reer. He earned first team All-American and All-Big Sky Conference honors. A junior from McNary (OR) High School, Brown made 24-27 kicks, with his only misses from 46 yards or longer. Brown also finished tied for sixth in the na-tion in scoring with an average of 9.18 points per game. With 60 career field goals, Brown also holds that Portland State record. He has made six career field goals from 50 yards or longer, also a school record; and his .769 conversion percentage (60-78) is a school record. With 101 points on the season, Brown ranks ninth in PSU history. His 255 career points now ranks fifth all-time at PSU.

Kavanaugh’s new marks were for rush-ing in a season (1,060) and a career (1,964) by a quarterback. Kavanaugh also became the tenth player in Portland State history to reach 1,000 yards in a season. It marks the 17th time there has been a 1,000-yard rush-ing season at PSU. Kavanaugh ranks 11th on PSU’s career rushing list and 14th on the season rushing list (see page 20 of this release for more). Kavanaugh was 127-219 passing for 1,628 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. He had 2,688 yards of total offense and accounted for 16 touch-downs. Kavanaugh was named the Vikings’ team MVP.

FACTS, FIGURES AND CURIOSITIESWINS AND LOSSES: Portland State finished the season 7-4, its best record since going 7-4 in 2006. PSU went 3-2 on the road - its first winning road record since going 4-3 in 2006... PSU’s 3-1 Big Sky road record matches its best ever (also 2000 and 2006)... with seven wins, PSU had more than the previous two years com-bined (4-18)... the Vikings were 4-2 at home... at 7-4, the Vikings have eight win-ning records in 16 years as a member of the Big Sky Conference... PSU is 55-31 in home games since moving to the NCAA I level, 28-62 on the road... PSU is 55-68 all-time in Big Sky Conference games in its’ 16th season as a member. The Vikings are 34-28 at home, 21-40 on the road in BSC games.

WHAT’S THE SCORE?: Portland State scored 29 or more points in eight of 11 games, and 40 or more three times. It is the first time PSU has scored at least 40 points three times since 2005... the only times the Vikings failed to reach 29 was in a 55-13 loss at TCU, 30-24 loss at Montana and 23-17 win over Northern Colorado.

RECORD RUNS: Portland State’s Pistol offense was conducive to big rushing numbers and a handful of new rushing records in 2011. The Vikings finished eighth in the nation in rushing (247.8 per game). To wit:• Portland State has set a new season rushing record with 2,726 yards. The old mark was 2,248 yards (204.4 ypg), set in 2004. • The Vikings established a single game rushing record with 436 yards at Idaho State on 58 carries (6 TDs). The old mark was 431 yards.• SR QB Connor Kavanaugh set new PSU and Big Sky Conference records for rush-ing yards by a quarterback in a season (1,060) and a career (1,964).• The Vikings had the first-ever 200-200 rushing game in school history when Cory McCaffrey (218) and Connor Kavanaugh (212) each reached that total in the win over Idaho State.• The Vikings survived the injury to star running back Cory McCaffrey, totaling 1,062 rushing yards in the five games after he went down (210.4 per game).

SOME VERY SPECIAL TEAMS: New Special Teams Coordinator Stacy Collins may have been the Viking coaching staff’s “Coach of the Year.” His special teams were terrific throughout the season. Here are some season highlights:• With nine total blocks (seven punt, two FG), PSU ranked second in the nation at the FCS level.• The Vikings had gone five years without a punt block, but had six this season. JR WR Nevin Lewis had three blocked punts, JR LB Dionte Brooks had two, FR TE Taylor Martinek and SO RB Justin Lilley each had one.• PSU snuffed out two fake punt attempts by opponents. Meanwhile, the Vikings converted two fake punts.• The Vikings hadn’t blocked a field goal in two years, but had two in 2011, both by GR DT Myles Wade. Wade’s block in the closing moments against Northern Arizona allowed the Vikings to hang on for the win. He also had one against Montana State.

• The Vikings’ JR K Zach Brown had a school-record string of 16 straight field goals made, including his first 10 this season. Brown was 24-27 this year extending his career field goal record to 60 and setting a new single-season record. His only misses were from 46 yards or longer. He led the nation in field goals made. • The Vikings benefitted from a high snap on a punt attempt in the fourth period at Idaho State. FR WR Ronnie Simmons ran down the ISU punter for a 23-yard loss. The Vikings took over and two plays later SR RB Cory McCaffrey scored the game-winning touchdown.• The Vikings converted both fake punt attempts during the season - one by JR P Thomas Duyndam at Montana, and one by JR P Ian Sluss at Eastern Washington.• PSU’s kick return team averages 22.4 per return this season. Lewis (23.7) and SR FS DeShawn Shead (26.1) lead the way in that department. Shead was the Big Sky leader in kick return average.• Lewis, Wade and Brown (twice) all earned Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors this season.• Lewis was named first team All-Big Sky Conference for Special Teams. Brown was a first team All-Big Sky kicker, and Shead and JR P Thomas Duyndam made honorable mention All-Big Sky for special teams.

LED BY SHEAD: SR SS DeShawn Shead started 44 straight games and was the only Viking to start and play in every game over the last four seasons. He won a Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor and was named first team All-Big Sky Conference at the end of the year. Shead had a career-high 64 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions (one returned for a touch-down), eight pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery... for his career, Shead had 211 tackles, 11 interceptions, 29 pass breakups, five fumble recoveries and five forced fumbles.

RELYIN’ ON RYAN: SR LB Ryan Rau made a career-high 17 tackles, including two tackles for loss, at Montana. His 17 stops tied for the eighth most in PSU history for a game... for the season, Rau had a career-high 90 tackles to lead the team. He also had 7.5 tackles for loss, a team-high four sacks, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery... Rau ended his career with 268 tackles and was the team-leader for three straight years (72 in 2009, 83 in 2010, 90 in 2011).

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: Portland State was last in the Big Sky Conference in 2010 in rushing defense, allowing 232.9 yards per game on the ground. Included were 391 rushing yards by Northern Arizona in the 2010 sea-son finale. On Sept 17 this year, PSU held NAU - playing the same two feature backs as last season - to just 79 rushing yards. That set the tone for a much-im-proved defense in 2011... this year, PSU allowed a respectable 136.7 yards on the ground (and 214.5 through the air). The 351 yards allowed per game was down 113 yards from 464 last year. The Vikings also gave up 12 fewer points per game in 2011.

PLAYING LIKE SAMSON: The long flowing locks on JR WR Justin Monahan are reminiscent of the mighty Samson (although most on the team call him “Twi-light” for his resemblance to a certain vampire in a famous movie/book series). Monahan played like Samson at TCU, totaling career-highs of nine receptions for 109 yards. His fourth-and-two catch at the TCU one-yard line in the fourth period kept a drive alive and led to a FR RB Shaquille Richard touchdown run... he had a big game with eight receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns at Eastern Washington. His first TD catch was on a tipped pass intended for Kalua Noa in the endzone. After Noa touched it, three Eagles players also touched it. Monahan was the fifth player to touch the ball when he secured the grab on a 14-yard touchdown... Monahan totaled a career-high 154 yards on six catches against Sacramento State... at Northern Colorado, Monahan made nine more catches for 71 yards and a touchdown... for the season, Monahan had a team-leading 52 catches for 707 yards and six touchdowns. He had 33% of PSU’s receptions and 35% of PSU’s receiving yards.

HE CAN DO IT ALL: JR WR Nevin Lewis has made his name as a do-it-all Viking and earned first team All-Big Sky Conference at the special teams position.

GAULKE EARNS ACADEMIC HONORS: SO C Mitch Gaulke was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 team for his achievement in the

classroom and on the field. Gaulke, from West Linn High School, started all 11 games at center, leading the Big Sky Conference’s top rushing offense. He also maintains a 3.76 GPA in Business Administration: Accounting. He is the first Vi-king to win Academic All-District honors since 2007 (Jordan Senn, Cole Smith, Micheal Dorsey). District 8 includes all Division I football schools in the western region. Gaulke will now be eligible for the national ballot which will be voted on later this month.

FLAGS, RAGS AND OTHER FLYING YELLOW OBJECTS: Portland State had problems with penalties this season, totaling 118 flags for 1,072 yards (10.8-97.5 per game)... PSU had to overcome itself as much as anything to pick up a 42-35 win at Idaho State. The Vikings commited 21 penalties for 209 yards in the game. The 21 flags was a new Big Sky Conference record and two shy of the NCAA I FCS record.

NEW ATTITUDE AT HOME: Portland State brought a new attitude to JELD-WEN Field. After going 35-9 at home over Tim Walsh’s final eight seasons, 1999-2006 (including two 5-0 marks), the Vikings were just 7-13 at home the last four years (which includes 1-3 at Hillsboro Stadium in 2010). The Vikings were 4-2 in their return home... Head Coach Nigel Burton now has a 5-5 home record.

THE VIKINGS RECORD ON TV: Since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996, Portland State has appeared on television locally in Portland 40 times. PSU is 17-24 in those games, 10-8 at home, 7-16 on the road... the Vikings broke an 11-game TV losing streak with the win over Southern Oregon. PSU is 3-2 on TV this season.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: Portland State’s win over Willamette (36-10) made it 2-0 against lower Division opponents this year. The aggregate score in those games was 88-10. Since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996, Portland State is 10-0 against lower division programs (Division II, III and NAIA).

THE DYNAMIC DUO: Before the injury to SR RB Cory McCaffrey, the dynamic duo of McCaffrey and SR QB Connor Kavanaugh were shredding Big Sky Confer-ence defenses when they played together... they combined for an impressive 200 yards against Montana, although they came up short of another 100-100 game against a Big Sky opponent... in five of the nine Big Sky Conference games that Kavanaugh and McCaffrey have started together over the last two years, each has run for at least 100 yards. In one of the other three games (vs. Eastern Washington last year), Kavanaugh went out with a broken hand in the first pe-riod. If you throw out the EWU game, in the other eight that both have been healthy, they have combined for 2,226 yards and 25 touchdowns. That is an aver-age of 278.3 yards and 3.1 touchdowns per game. Apparently, the Pistol offense works... McCaffrey is just the fourth Viking in history with at least three 200-yard rushing games (there have been 27 200-yard games)... with 2,018 rushing yards the past two seasons, McCaffrey ranks 10th on PSU’s all-time list for career rush-ing. He ranks eighth all-time with 23 career rushing touchdowns... the only time McCaffrey failed to rush for 100 yards in a Big Sky game was last year at NAU when he went out with injury in the first period... with 1,711 career rushing yards, Kavanaugh is PSU’s all-time quarterback rusher. His 506 yards last season were a school record for a quarterback. He broke that mark this year and now has a Big Sky record 807 yards this season.

THE HUBEL TELESCOPE: With SR QB Drew Hubel (that’s HUE-bull, not hubble) having completed his career, it is worth taking a closer look at his Portland State career passing statistics. Hubel moved into fourth place in all-time passing yards at PSU with 6,678, passing Terry Summerfield (1982-85)... Hubel also has 44 ca-reer touchdown passes to rank sixth all-time... his pass completion total of 506 now ranks fifth all-time at PSU.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT REELOPENING WITH A BANG: Portland State re-opened newly-remodeled JELD-WEN Field for football with a big bang, beating Southern Oregon, 52-0 (9/3). The Vikings rolled up 597 yards of offense, including 335 on the ground and forced three SOU turnovers. PSU scored 31 points in the first 14 minutes of the game and never looked back.

SPECIAL TEAMS PERFORMER: JR WR Nevin Lewis, who was the Vikings’ top kick returner last year, showed he is a versatile special teams performer. Lewis did not have an opportunity for a return as PSU shut out Southern Oregon in the opener (9/3), but he had an impact elsewhere. Lewis blocked a punt and recorded a tackle on a fake punt attempt leading to a pair of Portland State touchdowns. In the first quarter, Southern Oregon tried a fake punt from its own 33-yard line. Lewis made the stop at the 27-yard line. Three plays later, Portland State scored to take a 17-0 lead. On Southern Oregon’s next punt, Lewis broke through for the block. PSU took over at the Southern Oregon 8-yard line, and scored soon after to take a 24-0 lead.

THE OPENING GAME’S BEST STORY OF ALL: When JR OL Joey Esposito trot-ted onto the field for the opening snap on offense against Southern Oregon, few Viking fans noticed. Such is the anonymity of the offensive lineman. However, those familiar with Joey’s story know it was the best one in a day filled with good Viking anecdotes. Esposito was playing in his first game since signing a national letter of in-tent with Portland State in 2010. Shortly after competing in spring football that year, Esposito was diagnosed with cancer for the SECOND TIME in his life. Having previously battled testicular cancer, Esposito this time was told he had a spot on his lung. The 6-4, 300-pound Esposito had previously overcome the insidious dis-ease while in junior college. This time, he underwent chemotherapy throughout the summer of 2010 and eventually surgery to remove a piece of his lung. Not surprisingly, Esposito was unable to do anything football-related for the rest of the year. He returned for spring football this year, and despite being weak, showed promise. He was lauded for his resiliency in features by the Orego-nian newspaper and KGW TV Sports during spring ball. “I pretty much had to start all over again,” Esposito told Ian Ruder of the Or-egonian. “I wanted to come back and play football but I had to go through every day like it was my first day. I had to take my time getting into it and not rush. It took a while to get back into but this is what I do, this is who I am.” Now with a clean bill of health, and after six months of preparation, Es-posito, a native of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, is writing a new story in his life all over again.

RUNNING WILD: SR RB Cory McCaffrey and SR QB Connor Kavanaugh com-bined for 356 rushing yards in a 31-29 win over Northern Arizona in the Big Sky Conference opener (9/17). McCaffrey scored four touchdowns while Kavanaugh set a new career rushing high. It marked the fourth time in six Big Sky games to-gether in the backfield that the two have had at least 100 yards each. McCaffrey was named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week.

BLOCK PARTY: When GR DT Myles Wade blocked a late Northern Arizona field goal to secure a 31-29 Viking win (9/17), it marked the third block by a Viking in two games. Wade was named Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week. PSU also had a blocked punt in the game by FR TE Taylor Martinek. In the opener, JR WR Nevin Lewis also blocked a punt. Prior to that, PSU had not blocked a punt in five years, or a field goal in two years.

A RECORD RUN: SR QB Connor Kavanaugh and SR RB Cory McCaffrey became the first Viking teammates in history to rush for over 200 yards in the same game in a 42-35 win at Idaho State. McCaffrey rushed 33 times for 218 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner from 34 yards out with 1:52 to play. Kavanaugh rushed 12 times for career-highs of 212 yards and four touchdowns (as well as completing 6-11 passes for 102 yards). PSU’s 436 rushing yards were a new PSU record for a single game. Kavanaugh was named Big Sky Conference and National Player of the Week for his performance.

NO KICK ZONE: Portland State blocked two punts (Nevin Lewis, Dionte Brooks) and one field goal (Myles Wade) in a 38-36 loss to Montana State (10/8). That increased PSU’s blocked kick total to six on the season (including two each by Lewis and Wade).

2K CORY: SR RB Cory McCaffrey became the 10th Viking in history to pass 2,000 career rushing yards with a 25-carry, 103-yard, one touchdown effort at Montana (10/15). McCaffrey has 2,018 career rushing yards in just 16 games as the Vikings’

feature back.

DOUBLING UP: Portland State increased its win total to four with a 36-10 vic-tory over Willamette (10/22). That matches the program’s win total for the last two years combined (4-18). PSU outgained Willamette, 485-212, in the victory.

KAVANAUGH ENGINEERS BIG WIN: SR QB Connor Kavanaugh ran 24 times for 154 yards and completed 16 of 23 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown in leading the Vikings to a 43-26 win over defending national champion Eastern Washington (10/29). PSU trailed 14-3 in the second period, but Kavanaugh led the Vikings on 10-, 11- and 12-play scoring drives later in the game to take com-mand. PSU totaled 499 yards of offense.

BROWN, SISLER BURN UP INFERNO TURF: JR LB Joel Sisler and JR K Zach Brown burned up the red inferno turf in the Vikings’ 43-26 win over Eastern Washington (10/29) Both were named Big Sky Conference Players of the Week. Sisler earned Defensive Player of the Week after returning an interception 23 yards for a touchdown, making five tackles and a sack in the victory. He inter-cepted Bo Levi Mitchell and returned it for a touchdown with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter to give the Vikings an insurmountable 36-20 lead. Brown was Special Teams Player of the Week after making three field goals (38, 38, 41) and three extra points. He also executed a pooch kick that was recovered by the Vikings in the third quarter. It was Brown’s fifth career Player of the Week honor.

SHEAD SWATS THE HORNETS: Portland State’s defense turned in another solid performance, holding Sacramento State to 307 yards of total offense. The “D” es-sentially gave up only six points in the 29-20 win (11/5). One Sacramento State score came on an interception return for touchdown, and a second came after the Hornets recovered a PSU fumble on the one-yard line. SR SS DeShawn Shead sealed the win with a late interception to go with eight tackles, a sack and pass breakup. He was named Big Sky Conference co-Defensive Player of the Week for his performance.

ANOTHER BIG PLAY: SR SS DeShawn Shead returned an interception 74 yards for the decisive score in a 23-17 victory over Northern Colorado (11/12). The play came with 3:54 to play and gave the Vikings a 23-14 lead. Shead also tied a career-high with nine tackles.

MORE RECORDS FALL: JR K Zach Brown set another record when he reached 20 field goals for the season at Northern Colorado (11/12). That broke his own school record of 18 field goals set twice. Brown was named Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance. He finished he season with records of 24 (season) and 60 (career). Meanwhile, SR QB Connor Kavanaugh broke the Big Sky career rushing record for quarterbacks by climbing to 1,932 yards. He finished the season with records of 1,060 (season) and 1,964 (career).

BACK WHERE THEY BELONG: For the first time since the first week of the 2007 season, the Portland State football team appeared in the Sports Network’s Top 25 poll (25th on Nov. 14).

POST-SEASON RECOGNITION: The Vikings had four players earn first team All-Big Sky Conference, three earn second team All-Big Sky and nine others named honorable mention All-Big Sky for 2011. In addition, Head Coach Nigel Burton was one of 20 finalists for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award.

KICKING IT AROUND WITH ZACH BROWN: JR K Zach Brown reaped numer-ous post-season awards for his kicking prowess. In addition to being named first team All-Big Sky Conference, Brown was named a consensus first team All-Amer-ican by AP, the AFCA and The Sports Network. He was also selected as one of ten national finalists for the Fred Mitchell Award, combining on-field excellence with community service.
