Adidas Fun Run:
A HUGE thank you to all of the parents who helped out on Cross Country
day. An event like this cannot run without the support of our parents. I
would also like to thank everyone who came along on the day to support
the children. It was a fantastic atmosphere and everyone enjoyed the
day. A special thank you must go to MR Keem who organised the event –
it is a big job and he did a magnificent job! Most importantly well done to
all of the students who participated on the day, you all did yourselves and
the school proud.
Next Wednesday is the interschool cross country at Yarraman Park. Mr Keem will send home
information with those children who have qualified.
Don’t forget that all of the fundraising money is due back NO LATER THAN TOMORROW…
NAPLAN:
This week is the 2014 NAPLAN testing. This will involve all grade 3, 5, 7 & 9 students from across the
country. This is compulsory for all schools to take part in and the results are used as important data
for schools. Students have already completed the Language Conventions, Writing and Reading
tests. Numeracy will be the final test tomorrow.
Education Week:
Next week is Education Week. At Portland Primary School we believe that every week is Education
Week, but none the less, there will be some special things happening. We will have a range of
activities on throughout the week. The senior grades will start swimming, the Grade 6’s will have
their Open Day at PSC, those children not swimming will be going to a performance at the Arts
Centre on Tuesday, and then on Friday we will be having a shared breakfast as a part of National
Walk Safely to School Day. When you also add in school photos and the district cross country, it
certainly makes for a busy week!
School Photos:
Next MONDAY are our school photos. Please ensure that your child comes to school in FULL
SCHOOL UNIFORM, with their hair done nicely and that they are at school on time. Children who
are not at school on time run the risk of missing their class photo.
National Walk Safely to School Day:
Next Friday May 23rd is National Walk Safely to School Day. On this day we will
be having a ‘Walking School Bus’ from the Big O milk bar, as well as a school
breakfast. We are encouraging all families to make the effort to walk to school
on this day, even if it means getting dropped off a few blocks from school and
walking the rest of the way. Any family who walks, will get a free breakfast. We
are also inviting parents to walk with their children and to stay for breakfast. We
will be discussing with children how to be safe when walking to school in the days leading up to it.
WE WILL MEET AT THE BIG O AT 8:30am SHARP FOR UR WALKING SCHOOL BUS. It would be great to
see as many families joining us as possible!!!

AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2014
WULAMANAYUWI AND THE SEVEN PAMANUI By Jason De Santis | Directed by Eamon Flack
Goosebumps-raising, joyful and emotional, Wulamanayuwi and the Seven Pamanui mixes the enchanting tradition of
European fairytales with the Creation characters and stories of the Tiwi Islands.
Following critically acclaimed seasons at the COME OUT Festival and the Darwin Festival (2011) the delightful
Wulamanayuwi embarks on a comprehensive national tour taking in WA, Qld, Vic, SA and NSW from March through to
June in 2014.
Using the language and rhyme, culture and stories of the Tiwi Islands, playwright and performer Jason De Santis brings to
life this classic tale of good, evil and magical redemption. Wulamanayuwi and the Seven Pamanui is a visually layered
production using puppets, song, dance and projections to bring to life a modern adventure story, inspired by Snow White
and the Seven Dwarfs.
Playright Jason De Santis explains his inspiration for the work. “Growing up I had always loved hearing stories! Especially
from my Nanna Martha and my Poppy Vince in Darwin. Then in the school holidays, I would go home to Tiwi Islands, and
hear stories about "little men" like the Pamanui in this story and "mapurtiti" spirits, bush people and creation beings. In
Melbourne In 2008, feeling homesick but incredibly inspired seeing other blackfella’s creating, directing and acting in
theatre, I couldn't help but think about the islands and suddenly all the stories I had been told came flooding back to me
and all I wanted to do was write. I wanted to write a story that had elements of white and black culture, funny, sad, scary
and exciting, like the stories I had been told!”
Five actors play a host of characters, operate puppets and perform live music. The narrator Jarparra, the Moon Man, introduces us to
Wulamanayuwi, the daughter of a Tiwi Warrior, who has run away from her evil stepmother. Guided by a white cockatoo, Wulamanayuwi
encounters creatures of magical significance – the seven Pamanui – who lead her on a joyful and surprising journey.
Director Eamon Flack is delighted to be involved in the project.”I love to demands of the work itself - to identify all the streams of
tradition going on in the work, from old fashioned panto to Tiwi tradition to the particular idioms of a kind of contemporary
Indigenous stock of humorous characters and behaviours - a sort of semi-defined blackfella commedia dell'arte - I loved
drawing all these traditions into a whole. The play is actually enormous, they're so so so much going on in there, but we've
found a way of arranging all that chaos into this quite contained little living puppet show. ”

In the main foyer at the
office we have placed a
board and some sticky
notes – we are asking our
school community to tell
us all of the things that
Portland Primary School
does really well… 2014 is our year of review and we
are getting ready to write our new
strategic plan for the next 3 years.
Over the next few weeks we will be
asking for parent input into a few
different aspects of our school. We
would really appreciate parents and
the school community taking the
time to assist us in this process.
Thank you!
