New Urbanism Social Core Re-DesignHaile Plantation in Gainesville, FLGroup ProjectMedia-AutoCAD, 3Ds Max, Photoshop

This project took an existing new urbanist neighborhood and re-invented the social core in order to satisfy the needs of the community and its residents. In order to re-design the social core evidence-based design was implemented for the design of the two buildings and their connecting green space. This evidence is a result of literature research, benchmarking similar new urbanist communities, benchmarking site visits, and a focus group at a local retirement community.

Design CONCEPT & INSPIRATIONCRAFFT is a modern pub and paint studio designed to appeal to a wide range of people, giving the residents a third place to enjoy within walking distance. The CookNook is a learning kitchen and living room space for residents to learn new skills and relax. Research showed that elderly residents preferred spaces that give them purpose and is within walking distance. CRAFFT and the CookNook accomplish these goals while introducing a layered design that blends handcrafted elements for a raw-polished look. This design intent was achieved through layering and overlapping the boundaries and boarders of different areas.

GREen space

Design researchAccording to Seaman, Jones and Ellaway (2010), green spaces should increase the community’s connectedness and cohesiveness. To bring people together the green space offers beautiful gardens planted by kanapaha botanical gardens where residents can enjoy a scenic stroll.(Peters, Elands and Buijs, 2010)

This design seeks to create a harmonious flow between different sources of activity and rest throughout the building. Harmony is created between the private and public spaces through the use of partial and full views, encouraging interaction between the two. Nature views denote the sources of rest and also help reinforce the circulation path. Points of interest such as the plant wall and cafe attract activity and serve as sources of social interaction.

NEXT Cafe serves as an active engagement opportunity for students and faculty. The incorporation of trees provides a rejuvenating and restorative environment for the visitors to enjoy.

NEXT Distance Learning Classroom offers different seating options which allows students to have choice and control over their environment. This makes students want to visit and feel comfortable.

NEXT Large Classroom

NEXT Large classroomThe large classroom provides an opportunity for students to choose where and how they wish to sit. A place feels more comfortable if a choice is presented and views are available from the location. The tables in the large classroom are arranged to allow every student to have the same view with ease. The moveable whiteboard wall presents the students with the opportunity to interact with their environment (Kaya, 2007), (Cotner, Loper, Brooks, 2013)
