Mask and life drawing...

These 2 small exercises were considered as an introduction to the bachelor course. The task of hand-making a mask helped me to develop a sense of beauty. On the other hand, the task of life drawing require me to draw the static moments of a person by free-hand. In order to become an architect, it is important to learn how to draw, by good coordination between eye and hand.

Space and Matter...

This whole design project was divided into 6 stages, each contributes to the next stage and the final product. This project helped me to understand the relationship between space and matter, thinking from 2D to 3D.

Performative Structure...In this project, I am required to design a stair for a client, which is Nuttin but Stringz. This is a team formed by a pair of siblings, which are great violinists, they perform very well. My aim is to design a stair which combines with a platform as a stage for them to perform.

Elemental sheltering...In this project, I needed to design a shelter in a location that I chose. I chose Hong Kong Wetland Park as the site location. It was the first time I have to design a building, it is important and difficult to keep it functional and aesthetically appeal at the same time. I had to consider many different aspects/elements when designing the shelter, for example, to develop an universal design which allow all kinds of people including disadvantaged people to access the shelter, to allow adequate sunlight into the shelter, etc.

Written description of my proposal

Hong Kong Wetland Park is the site of my shelter.It

is a park where lots of birds stop there and take

rest.My shelter will be a place for bird-viewing,studying

as well as sleeping.I tried to maintain a balance

between human comfort and the harmony of nature by

designing a simple shelter shape and matching its color

with nature.

ARCH-IvAL Investigation: Balkrishna Doshi...This was a group research project with 3 members, studying one of the famous works of a well-known Indian architect, Balkrishna Doshi. We chose his work- Sangath(1979-81) in Ahmedabad, India. We analyzed the details of the design of this building and get inspired by it in our future designs.

The design of this project was based on the last project-ARCHIvAL investigation. The aim was to develop a design of a gallery according to the design characteristics of Balkrishna Doshi. The location of the site (Site 6) is inside a carpark next to the university campus, the site has an elongated shape. Designing a gallery is different from designing a shelter, due to the variations in use. Different aspects needed to be considered when designing a gallery.

The 10-Second experience...This project was very innovative and new to me, it was about manipulating parametric modeling (grasshopper + Rhino) to design a public sculpture on a busy highway in the city of Melbourne. Parametric modeling is very different from the traditional way of designing, different components were combined and used in grasshopper to produce the design, different inputs can create completely different results. This project was extremely inspiring.

It was a group project with 3 members. The 3 main concepts of our project were lighting (cut/diffused technique), cellular skin(voronoi and layering) and ecology (rooting system). We combined the 3 themes to produce the final design- a tunnel sculpture with 2 layers of voronoi pattern. Cut and diffused lighting techniques were applied in the holes of the voronoi patterns. Using an interval of every 50m, an attractor point is applied while constructing the voronoi pattern. This results in a big contrast between the cell sizes.

The lighting techniques (cut/diffused) are used to indicate the distance travelled by car drivers (an interval of every 50m). In the voronoi patterns, smaller cells are not extruded between the 2 layers to provide ventilation and act as cut light technique (light penetrate through the pattern at sharp angles), they are located in every 50m. Colored semi-transparent glasses are applied to larger cells to diffuse the light penetrating through the pattern and create aesthetic effects. The speed of cars on the highway is 100km/hr, for a 300m long tunnel, the tunnel now is a 10-second experience.

Barlow Motors...This project was mainly about designing a carshowroom at the corner of Melbourne CBD area, the client of the building is the Barlows. The building has multifunctional uses: carparking spaces, carshowroom, coffee shop, miniature golf course, apartment, etc. The building is a high-rise building with 12 floors: carparking spaces at the bottom; intermediate open spaces; top carshow-room. Circular ramps connect carparking levels; the intermediate open spaces provide an excellent view of the victoria street; glass curtain walls are applied in the carshowroom levels to provide an open view for people inside and outside; apartment and a rooftop garden are on the top level.
