Route to RevivalProject by Elena Chochanova

The Gleisdreieck, as it is called, is located in the midst of a dense railway network in the North part of the city of Kassel, Germany. Due to its geograph-ical and infrastructural secluded-ness there is no possibility for reintegration within the city fabric. On one hand that is precisely what contributes to its spe-cial character; it is virtually invisible due to the large amounts of vegetation in and around it. Yet, on the other hand the current access does not offer a pleasant, recreational welcome for neither pedestrians, nor bicyclists.

In order to revive the Gleisdreieck area one needs to create some virtual connection with the city and more importantly a program that would trigger the inhabitants and tourists of Kassel to venture inside and explore the site. An engaging and interesting program combined with an inviting route is the formula that would be most suited in this case.

Therefore, introducing a recreational biking route to the site in addition to new and flexible functions for the existing buildings is in the core of the design. That task requires the creative integration of new elements within the old con-text, which is achieved through adaptive reuse.

    Redesigning documenta cityPeriod: Spring/Fall 2012

Graduation Committee:dr.ir. Jos Bosmanir. Wouter Hilhorstir. Bas Driessen

    Location:Kassel, Germany

Assignment: To redesign parts of the city of Kassel in a way that relates both to its historical past as well as enhancing its present reputation as a European capital of art and culture.

Design:The Gleisdreieck, as it is called, is locat-ed in the midst of a dense railway network in the North part of the city of Kassel, Germany. Due to its geographical and infrastructural secluded-ness there is no possibility for reintegration within the city fabric. Currently abandoned the site holds an enormous potential for redevelopment. In order to revive the Gleisdreieck I have created a physical and a virtual connection with the city.

Recreational RouteThe atmosphere along that rail line is that of peace and tranquility as in the over-grown derelict wye. The creation of a rec-reational path across Northern Kassel will directly affect the perception of the Gleis-dreieck, rendering it more a park, rather than a dividing and unused strip of infra-structure.

Industrial HeritageThe character of the abandoned train shed on site is especially strong thanks to its enormous dimensions. The intervention will be part of the shed but it will be a kind of independent organism, forming a sym-biotic relationship, which would benefit both industrial heritage and new addition.

An original pre-war faade of the abandoned train shed. It reflects on the architectural style of its time and the craftsmanship applied in its construction. Its a wonder how this building is not yet a listed monument of indus-trial heritage.

The loation of the train shed within the railway wye and the two added volumes within. Both volumes are detached from the historical structure, leaving an intact empty shell. In addition, the volumes are self-contained and acclimatized, since they house all the necessary functions for the transformation of the old train shed into an event hall.

The derelict state of the site has rendered it very pictur-esque. That is a quality that is worth preserving.

The existing faade of the train shed where the inter-vention will be applied. For the purpose no part of the existing fabric will need to be demolished. The new structure will protrude through the large doors.

An abandoned rail line leading from the Gleisdreieck to an old cargo station, alternates between tunnels and bridges. A recreational bike path will be built on top of the old infrastructure connecting the site to the sur-rounding districts and in particular the various sites of past or present industrial activity.

    Project name:

    Industrial WaterfrontsPeriod: Fall 2010

    Supervisor:dr.ir. Irene Curulli

    Location:Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Assignment: This project was part of the Master design studio Industrial Waterfronts led by dr.ir. Irene Curulli. The aim of the studio was to

address the industrial heritage of the area around the Eindhovensche Kanaal. We were guided to use a sensitive approach to the historical value of the canal, both tangible and intangible.

Design:After a thorough analysis a design propos-al was put forth, which addressed the ca-nal as a whole new leading thread in and out of the city. The design shown here is one of the leading spots of creative activi-ties along that thread.

The design is of a new mixed-use residen-tial block on a former industrial lot. The new structures define the block, which currently dissolves towards the existing

residential district behind, carrying only ghostly fragments of the former textile factory that used to occupy that space.

The binding element of this design is the square that connects old and new fabric. It is a main junction point between the dif-ferent routes that lead to and away from the canal zone.

The open space acts like a buffer bub-ble between all the activities. Facing the square are two main elements: studio housings for artists and designers on one side, and the office of the former textile factory, which is to be used as an caf-res-taurant with a path through that would connect the square to the canal.

The DAF museum should become more present in the canalscape. A new and grander entrance should be con-structed in the historical part of the building.

Remnant DAF trucks would decorate the open space around it and point directly at the historical significance of the area.

Activating the canal means allowing more direct inter-action with the water. Pedestrian bridges, cafs and res-taurants on the waterside and facilities for ice-skating would be introduced.

An impression sketch of the square within the residential block.

Harvesting the picturesque qualities of Eindhovens in-dustrial heritage serves as the main inspiration for this masterplan.

    ROUTES

The central square is a main junction point between the different routes that lead to and away from the canal zone. As such it has the power to guide the pedes-trian towards their next des-tination. The square has a very open and serene character, even though it borders many dif-ferent functions. In fact that open space acts like a buffer bubble between all the ac-tivities. It is a place to take a deep breath and reflect on the traces of past that remain in the surroundings.

    Project name:

    Culture ShockPeriod: Spring 2010

Supervisors:dr. Jacob Voorthuisir. Sjef van Hoof

    Location:Xochimilco, Mexico City, Mexico

Assignment: To design a contemporary colonizers in-tervention in the heart of Xochimilco, a traditional neighbourhood built within the Spanish colonizers grid.

Concept Manifesto:Mexico City is bi-polar. This is expressed through the stark contrast between the night-time and the day-time situation. While lively and vivid during the day, the city shuts itself in at night in such an aggressive manner that it renders itself almost uninhabitable. This agorapho-bia is rooted in the Mexican culture and expressed through its architecture. New architectural interventions should blend in with the city and its habits while exag-

gerating the most valued parts of its tra-ditions. The Mexican people want to be heard; their passion screams through their art, dance and music, all of which make up that colorful versatile culture. With the new development plan at the center of the Xochimilco district, they will be provided with that opportunity. It will be a space that enriches and supplements the exist-ing social structure; a cultural center that would house art, dance and film.

When the opening hour comes, this unsuspecting wall opens up by means of four hinged tall doors. Once in-side the entrance patio, one could chose to either enter the gallery or go into the open-air sculpture museum.

At the bottom of the stair one reaches a ticket-sales counter, from which one could chose to enter the open-air cinema or go inside a tunnel under the raised seats with a stair leading to the rear of the building.

Comfortably situated in a block in central Xochimilco, the cultural center faces the street with a flat Barra-gan-pink faade.

The open-air museum runs along a stair. Its depth is em-phasized by the adjacent seven-storey building and the high black lava stone walls. The sculptures are housed into square niches inside walls on both sides.

The cinema space has a direct connection to the dancing halls, also at subterranean level, through a bright-green perforated wall.

Sketch of the dancing halls exit towards the open-air cinema

At night the open-air cinema would project not only to its immediate audience but also to the rooftops of the neighboring buildings. By allowing a voyeur view of the movie, the complex could communicate and give back to the whole block. Those who live there will profit directly from the popularity of the cinema among more remote residents of the district.

Walking towards the rear of the building, one reaches a small patio with benches and then a small kitchen space. A narrow passage leads back to the tunnel under the auditorium seats.

Above & opposite page: aerial view of Xochimilco Cultural Center (note: roofs have been removed for the sake of clarity).Through a series of peek holes throughout the route, one is triggered to explore the building further. The resulting mixture of color and space sensations would reflect and emphasize the Mexican experience, which makes a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to encounter it.

    Project name:

    BetonballonPeriod: Spring 2009

    Supervisor:ir. Arno Pronk

    Location:TU/e, Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Assignment:The purpose of this project was to design a sustainable solution for the enclosure of an experimental concrete structure real-

ized as a part of an ongoing research at the university terrain in Eindhoven. The Betonballon prototype was built using a technique developed using the proper-ties of membranes. In order to create the greatest stretches of concrete using the least material a pneumatic membrane was used instead of the traditional molds.

Design:The design exercise here was to create a suitable faade for this extraordinary structure. The design uses sustainable materials in such a way as to maximize insulation of the structure. In addition to the double glass panels in the faade, ad-ditional thermal shutters have been fitted to add a flexible insolative bubble. The

design incorporates a traditional thatched roofing system covering the concrete membrane. Besides from being an ide-al roofing method for curved surfaces, it provides a high level of insulation. Spe-cial attention is paid to the joints of the structure. Sustainability here is not only addressed during the construction phase but also throughout the buildings life through its material propertoes.

    Project name:

    InternationalVelux Award 2012Period: Spring 2012

    Sponsor: Velux

    Co-designer: Jan Hang Lo

    Supervisor: ir. Jan Schevers

Assignment:Light of Tomorrow is the overall theme of the International VELUX Award. The award seeks to challenge the future of daylight in the built environment with an open-minded and experimental approach. Therefore, the award seeks to widen the boundaries of daylight in architecture, in-cluding aesthetics, functionality, sustaina-bility, and the interaction between build-ings and environment.

Problem: In the 20th century the exponential world population growth concentrated in urban areas called for high-density, high-rise, highly efficient dwellings, built at low-cost and in a minimum amount of time. Nu-

The Faade Transplant is executed in four simple steps

We believe that the strengthening of the sense of community in a large building like this will not only improve on the in-habitants relationships amongst each other but it will, above all, improve on the inhabitants relationship with the building

    itself.

Opposite page: Together with the Faade Transplant a new space is introduced into the apartment block. Instead of the claustrophobic former space that was used only entirely for vertical transportation, we propose a new spatial design that will provide a good new atmosphere and function. It will be a communal space that will provide a place for social interac-tion to the buildings inhabitants. Together with the faade metamorphosis and the increase of ceiling height, a wooden element is introduced that acts both as furniture and a faade facing South. The organic design allows for multiple functions and social arrangements, creating a unique ambience in the communal space.

  • 40 41Portfolio Elena Chochanova | Architecture, Art, Photography

ment block is characterized by its repeti-tive and painfully obtuse, albeit functional and efficient design. The case study that is subject to this particular design is a twelve-storey apartment block with a sin-gle central transportation unit. The Unit contains the main stair and elevator and it leads to each of the hundred and twenty identical dwellings on the block. The lack of visual and aesthetic experience in the building is further accentuated by the low ceilings of merely 2.4 meters.

Although the individual dwelling units re-ceive optimal illumination and despite the fact that access decks have been designed to be as efficient as possible, the quality of light inside the building is lacking, es-

pecially in the transportation areas, such as the one around the elevator and main stair. That fact, combined with the low aesthetic essence of the buildings exteri-or creates an overall inadequate image for a building that should be called a home by its inhabitants.

The design proposes a solution to this problem.

We believe that the strongest characteris-tic of this rehabilitation design is the fact that, not unlike the building it is destined for, it is universal and it could be applied anywhere where high-density dwellings have been placed as stamps over the ur-ban fabric.

merous buildings have been erected in ac-cordance with those principles in order to meet the demand. Today these structures are dismissed as inappropriate or of poor aesthetic quality.

As advocates of the architectural profes-sion we believe that the best way to ad-dress the challenges of the future is to look at what is offered by the present. There is an incredible potential to be found in these largely underestimated buildings.

Design:For the purpose of this design we have chosen for a deck access flat, typical of the 1970s in Europe. This kind of apart-

    Period: Spring 2009

Design: This logo design appropriately addresses the two words that have been so cleverly fused to make up the name of the new Ar-chitecture Student Association.

AnarchyAn antonym of the word anarchy is au-thority, which is organized governance with hierarchy as its main instrument. The notion of anarchy eliminates any hierarchy that might have been established by au-thority and governance. In the design one may notice a hierarchi-cal organization in the decrease in total height as one reads the word (from left to right). However, the seemingly strict or-ganization has been disrupted by subtle disorderly shifts, such as the slight over-hang of the mirrored N, the fallen dot of the i and its pushed-out shaft. It is as if a natural degradation has taken its course, slowly leading to the anarchical paradise.

ArchitectureArchitecture is as old as the first few stones stacked on top of each other that gave birth to it. The texture used on the letters is that of black marble, a magnifi-cent and imposing natural stone. It is only fitting for marble to denote a discipline of such firm grounds.
